About the team

This role sits in the newly created Communications and External Affairs Directorate. The directorate is responsible for all the charity’s external facing work including communications, brand, campaigns, public affairs and policy work.

About the role

The charity is going through significant change due to the ending of funding contracts and the implications of new legislation. We are therefore investing in internal communications with this critical role. The key responsibility will be to play a leading role in developing our internal communications strategy and delivering it, managing the Senior Internal Communications Officer and liaising effectively across the directorate and the wider organisation at all levels.

Main duties and responsibilities

• Lead the internal communications function. We are committed to the wellbeing of our people and also to open, transparent and innovative internal communications. The postholder will lead this work, working closely with closely with colleagues across the charity including the Senior Management Team. This will include being responsible for activity across a number of different communications channels.

• Lead change communications. The postholder will take responsibility for developing and delivering a change communications programme across internal and external communications to support transformation projects. This will include effective communication of organisational priorities, external pressures on our services and influencing work and new service models coming out of our services strategy.

Key Responsibilities:

Public Relations:
 

• Develop and execute a comprehensive PR, communications & partnerships strategy to increase awareness and visibility of Bookmark’s brand, mission and reputation. 
• Build and deliver Bookmarks external communications calendar, driving reach and depth to support the Marketing team’s KPIs and objectives.
• Help create and implement a plan for communicating Bookmark’s strategy, impact, and school programs.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with media outlets, journalists, and influencers to secure coverage in national and regional media.
• Write and distribute press releases, pitch stories, engaging content and manage media inquiries.
• Monitor and report on PR activities, measuring the impact on brand awareness and engagement.

Ambassador Programme:
 

• Create, manage and expand a network of ambassadors, including authors, celebrities, and influencers who advocate for the charity.
•  Develop and implement strategies to effectively engage ambassadors in PR activities, events, and campaigns.
• Coordinate ambassador appearances, endorsements, and social media collaborations to amplify our message.

Marketing Integration:
 

• Work closely with the Head of Marketing & Communications to align PR, partnership, and ambassador activities with the overall marketing strategy.
• Contribute to the development of content and messaging that resonates with target audiences across all communication channels.
• Support the achievement of marketing KPIs, including volunteer registrations, completed applications, and brand awareness metrics.
• Identify and lead projects to improve Bookmark’s external communications.
• Collaborate with support teams to supply communication support for various initiatives, including program launches, corporate announcements, and crisis management.

• Proven experience in a PR, communications, or similar role, ideally within the charity, education, or non-profit sectors.

• A degree in marketing, communications, media, or equivalent experience or qualification.
• Proven experience in external communications, either in a PR team, or at a PR agency, with some experience of managing contractors or an agency.

We are looking for strong, passionate candidates with a proven track record of responsible management of communications, stakeholder engagement and content dissemination for a research institution, think tank, philanthropic consultancy or similar organisation. 

Our mission: 

Power for Democracies is a new international pro-democracy research initiative with a mission to protect and strengthen liberal democracies around the world. Our goal is to identify the most relevant and effective pro-democracy projects by civil society organisations in the context of current and emerging threats to democracies. 

Power for Democracies identifies these projects by systematically synthesising and analysing existing research and, where necessary, conducting and commissioning new research. We aim to publish recommendations that private and institutional donors, as well as civil society actors, can use to decide how and where to allocate their limited resources to best serve democracies. 

Communication and outreach are critical to the success of our mission. We seek to combine evidence-based research with academic knowledge and practical, results-oriented civil society experience. Our communications, online publications and other public-facing interactions address complex and dynamic issues, but must be accessible, transparent and informative to a range of audiences. The successful, targeted dissemination of our recommendations to the international donor community, their advisors and institutional grant-makers is critical to our mission. The attention that the assessed and recommended projects receive, and ultimately the funding that goes to these highly effective civil society initiatives, is key to achieving the positive change we aim for. 

Your responsibilities as the Head of Communications:

• Help position Power for Democracies as the "go to" evidence-based research and evaluation entity in the pro-democracy field with relevant stakeholders, donor groups, networks, institutions, and civil society spaces. 
• Recruit and build the small communications team in charge of Power for Democracies’ communication and distribution formats, channels, and tools. 
• Develop Power for Democracies' outreach and dissemination strategies (in close collaboration with the Knowledge + Research team) to gain meaningful attention from experts, the pro-democracy space, and donors alike. 
• Develop effective media and communication formats that best address the needs of our target groups (websites, white papers, podcast/videocast features, talks etc.). 
• Oversee the successful translation and adaptation of our research outputs into concise, informative, and engaging content. 
• In collaboration with our research experts, develop and plan our publication formats and oversee the Power for Democracies publishing calendar. 
• Provide support and advice to management and research professionals on all aspects of communications and outreach. 

As head of our small communications team, you are part of the management team and have a decisive role for Power for Democracies' success. Given the startup nature of the organization, additional tasks may arise ad hoc, such as contributions to networking and fundraising of the organisation. You report to the Executive Director. 

What you bring: 

• At least 6-10 years' practical experience in communications, media, publishing/editing or fundraising, including substantive experience in or for a research institution, think tank, science editorial team or equivalent. 
• At least two years in a senior role and solid experience of working with teams of content producers and publishing content on time. 
• A solid and nuanced understanding of the relevant spaces and stakeholders. 
• Experience in developing media, communication and distribution strategies tailored to highly specific audiences to ensure we select and develop the most effective communication and distribution channels. 
• Familiarity with the current cutting-edge digital formats and channels and an ability to implement them in a targeted and professional manner with your small team and our service providers.

As fundraising and communications manager, you will be an important part of our Senior Management Team (SMT) and help us deliver our exciting new strategy. Key responsibilities will include:

This is a pivotal strategic role in our organisation which will focus on the growth and development of our engagement with our stakeholders, partners and supporters. Together with your counterpart, The Head of Fundraising and Communication (Public and Corporate), you will drive income growth and lead on developing our social capital and presence within the city.

We are currently undergoing a strategy refresh and are looking for someone with a proven record of securing and maintaining large, multi-year grants, strategic acumen, innovative thinking and a positive proactive outlook to support us on the next stage of our development.

Doctors of the World UK (DOTW UK) is part of the global Médecins du Monde (MDM) network, which delivers over 400 projects in more than 70 countries through 6,000 volunteers.

DOTW UK boasts of a dynamic fundraising team dedicated to inspiring individuals and partners with the compelling story of DOTW’s impact and change. Their efforts are focused on building the necessary income, driving transformative change, and amplifying influence to fulfil our mission both in the UK and globally.

You will successfully manage the fundraising and communications team of 2 staff compromising of the Database/Donor Manager and Communications/Engagement Manage  to develop a strategic approach that aligns with the charity's annually agreed income and expenditure budgets. This involves setting clear goals, providing ongoing mentorship, and implementing performance metrics to ensure that the team is equipped to generate the necessary income to support the charity’s initiatives. This includes management of Trusts and Foundations, Events and Community, Corporate, Statutory and Overseas funding streams and Individual Giving streams.

You will be responsible for all internal and external communications means ensuring that every message, whether it's a press release, social media update, or internal briefing, effectively conveys the charity's mission and values. This consistency helps to strengthen the brand, engage supporters, and raise awareness of our work, fostering a sense of community around our goals.

Your support to colleagues in the MdM Network involves leveraging relationships and sharing best practices to help secure funding from UK donors. This collaboration is crucial for expanding our reach and ensuring that our work is recognized and funded across various platforms.

Finally, you are an active member participating in the Senior Management Team contributing insights and strategies that align with the charity’s development goals. This collaborative effort is vital for shaping the direction of the organisation and ensuring that all initiatives are cohesively aimed at delivering our broader objectives. By engaging in this leadership role, the Head of Fundraising and Communications role will help to drive the charity's mission forward, ensuring long-term sustainability and impact.
