We are currently seeking to recruit two to three more volunteer Trustees.
Citizens Advice Cornwall is an independent charity and a member of the national Citizens Advice service. We offer free, independent, confidential and impartial advice to individuals across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly on issues such as debt, welfare benefits, employment, housing, and consumer problems. We also research and campaign on a range of social and consumer issues. Our services are delivered by a team of highly-skilled and motivated volunteers and paid staff. As an organisation, we value diversity, promote equality and challenge discrimination wherever we find it.
The successful candidates will join our Trustee Board, which provides strategic direction and oversight to the charity. We’re looking for ambitious and forward-thinking people to help us deliver on our dual mission of advice and advocacy.
This position would suit someone taking their first steps to develop wider board level experience, and for those who might be new to governance. We welcome applications from all ages and backgrounds, so no matter what experience you have, we will provide full induction, onboarding and regular training for your Trustee role.

Volunteer Opportunity: Home Library Drivers Wanted!
Location: Wolverhampton and/or Sandwell

Are you passionate about helping others and making a difference in your community? Citizens Advice Dudley and Wolverhampton are looking for dedicated volunteer home library drivers to help us deliver library books to individuals who are unable to access libraries due to disability, illness, frailty, or full-time caregiving responsibilities.
No experience necessary. Full training given.
This role requires an enhanced DBS check, as you will be delivering library resources to vulnerable people at home. We will pay for and apply for this on your behalf.
Purpose of the Role:
• At the beginning of the shift, pick up library materials from a designated library and drive these resources to a list of client’s homes ensuring the safe and timely transport of these resources.
• Follow a 4-6 weekly rota to drop off and pick up these resources (so the routes and clients are familiar to you)
• When you drop off the resources, if vulnerable clients look like they need support (we train you to identify this) you will inform our Coordinator who will undertake an assessment.
Minimum Commitment Required:
1 day per week (hours to be agreed) for a minimum 6 months (following an induction, where you shadow our existing drivers and get to know our organisation)
About You
You will have:
• Qualified driver status with a full, current UK driving license (maximum 6 penalty points) and access to own car. (we pay mileage expenses)

The Witness Service provides practical and emotional support and information to witnesses so that they feel valued, respected and informed and able to give their best evidence in court.
The role is court based and will involve providing support to witnesses, and their supporters, by explaining the court procedures and legal terminology, showing them around the courtroom before trial and sitting in the courtroom with them, when permitted.
What will you do?
- Give witnesses and their supporters emotional support, guidance and information at court (e.g. explain court procedures and legal terms, support them with completing expense forms).
- Show witnesses and others around the courtroom before a trial so they are familiar and at ease in the environment.
- Go into the courtroom with a witness on trial day if permitted.
- Identify additional support to which we can signpost or refer witnesses.
- Work as part of a team with other Witness Service volunteers and staff as well as liaising with court personnel.

Our trustee board meets four to eight times a year, both full meetings and sub-committees with specific functions.

The Integrated Community Support (ICS) service provides day service opportunities for people with low and medium Preventative Care Needs.
We are currently looking to offer volunteering placements with our Mental Health Recovery Pathway (MHRP) – a mental health provision based across three sites in Islington responding to the mental health needs of Islington residents.
You will be assisting service users who experience mental distress in group settings.
We ask for a commitment of at least 1 day a week 10:15am – 4:00pm for a full year (+ about 2-3 months for DBS check and induction), though there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer more than one day a week.

The Communications Volunteer will write and coordinate our external communications. This includes CAW’s regular newsletter, stories and general information on our website, and campaign and research pieces. You will work alongside both our Research and Campaigns volunteers and key staff members.
• Work closely with our advice, partnership and community outreach team members to identify stories, case studies, advice and volunteering opportunities to promote
• Have the opportunity to write a regular newsletter for community partners and stakeholders to promote the work of Citizens Advice Westminster
• Produce short copy to promote our services for a variety of sources including our website and social media
• Explore and pilot new ways to promote our services to Westminster residents who currently don’t use our services, including through digital media
• Work with the Social Policy, Fundraising and Digital Media team to create high quality written content for campaigns and promotional materials
• Contribute to fundraising efforts by producing copy for general appeals, individual and group emails and our website
• Proofread and edit copy produced by others when requested
Skills, experience and time commitment
• Enthusiasm and commitment to work alongside a motivated team providing advice and information for residents across Westminster
• Excellent writing, communication and “people” skills
• Experience in writing informative, persuasive or neutral content depending on the purpose of and audience for the communication
• Self-motivation and the ability to work independently
• IT skills necessary to support research across numerous existing Citizens Advice databases and platforms
• Knowledge and experience of marketing and communications which is transferrable to Citizens Advice
• Experience with digital media, layout/design, creating presentations and/or fundraising would be advantageous but are not essential for this role.
Ability to commit 1 or 2 days a week to the role on a regular basis; location is flexible but it is helpful to be able to come to CAW at least a couple of times each month and to participate in Advice Forums and other regular activities as these provide useful insights into our work and our clients’ experiences

Purpose of the role
To support the Business Development Manager in raising much-needed funds from trusts and foundations.
Duties include:
- Identifying funders we could approach, e.g. by searching funder databases.
- Researching funders to clarify whether or not we are eligible to apply, how much funding we could apply for and which project they’d be most likely to fund.

Befriender Role
We are looking for compassionate, friendly volunteers 18+ with good communication and organisational skills with the ability to maintain accurate records, reporting to our office in Newcastle-Under-Lyme. The role will involve helping to build social interaction and the confidence of the client, establishing and maintaining a friendly, sympathetic and professional relationship. Volunteers will be matched to clients with similar interests, introduced to ensure they are happy to work together and accompanied by a mentor on the first few visits. This could involve meeting the client at a café, going shopping or going to the gym as examples. Encouraging engagement with our and other organisation activities helping the service user to socialise, to gain confidence and improve their standard of life. We welcome people to make an appointment to discuss volunteering with us.
Commitment
The time required for the role varies from 1 to 4 hours a week dependent on how much time you can give. We are looking for a reasonable commitment (6 months+).
Suitability
Must be 18+. We are especially looking for mature volunteers (possibly ex NHS staff) as many of our clients interact well with such people. Those interested in tackling social isolation/exclusion. The role may be of interest to those interested in psychology or looking to go into counselling, social work or care roles.

Training & supervision is provided, travel and reasonable volunteer role related expenses are paid. You will be fully supported by the CEO and staff from our Newcastle-Under-Lyme office.

Will you share your counselling or psychotherapy skills as a counsellor or therapist to join an online counselling service for patients and families affected by a chronic pain condition (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome)?
We're looking for 2 qualified counsellors, psychotherapists or psychologists ideally with some experience of working with chronic pain patients or lived experience of chronic illness, who may want to volunteer their skills supporting our adult service users (aged 18 & over) and help us to continue developing a mental health support service.
As a Volunteer Counsellor/Therapist you’ll be providing remote counselling/therapy support services to adults aged 18 and over many of whom are isolated and in need of mental health services. You’ll be providing one-to-one counselling/therapy sessions online via Zoom or by phone. With your recognised counselling qualifications and experience you will be an asset to our small charity and to our services users.
Depending on your qualifications, skills and experience, our volunteer counsellors / therapists provide person centred counselling (general talking counselling) or integrative counselling, or specialist services such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), ACT, CFT and EMDR for CRPS patients, or their families & close relatives.
People will be referred both by health or legal professionals as well as having patients and carers themselves referring into to the service.
In this role you’ll be able to develop your counselling and therapy skills, organisation, communication and team working skills.
Most importantly you’ll be providing essential services that help make sure no one has to face CRPS alone. Be the hope for CRPS.
What the role involves
This role may vary depending on needs, but is likely to include:

Undertake a client assessments, followed by person-centred counselling (via Zoom or phone) to our clients, offering up to 20 sessions for each client plus 4 psychometric assessments

Providing one-to-one counselling sessions to clients aged 18 & over

Update our database with the client’s basic information and session attendance

Maintain succinct, relevant session notes and store these confidentially and securely in acccordahce with GDPR
- Attending and participating in peer supervision support

Attend CPD training to ensure your knowledge stays current
- Participating in volunteer meetings
- Maintaining client confidentiality, upholding data protection and equal opportunities principle

Attend monthly Supervision and peer support sessions to ensure safe working practices
We can support you to develop the skills you need for this role, including a full induction. You will have a chance to discuss your role and any additional needs with us. We can offer you a supervisor as well as expenses for annual insurance and an external supervisor if required.
What you need for this role
Essential
- Be a member (including student membership) of one of the recognised organisations (see below)
- Level 4 Diploma level qualifications as a minimum (unfortunately no students at this time), Degree or Masters in Counselling, Counselling/Clinical Psychology, Psychotherapy, Art Therapy, EMDR
- Minimum of 100 hours supervised
- Proof of professional indemnity insurance annually - we may consider paying this as an expense but commitment to the charity is required
- A valid DBS certificate (enhanced version), which is less than three years old and renewed every three years (the charity can provide where necessary)
- Able to keep people’s personal data safe

Willing and able to provide counselling via Zoom from a private location with a stable WiFi connection

Able to support a minimum of 3 clients a week, being three hours of your time for counselling sessions plus time for administration. We ideally hope you to offer the charity a minimum commitment of six months.

Making a difference
What impact will the opportunity have?
You will join the charity during a critical and challenging period where referrals are on the rise and your expert knowledge and experience will be invaluable to our success. You will have a key role in not only developing a counselling service for our clients but also ensure we provide counselling services and mental health support to our CRPS patients & their families who are in need of our support and inclusion on a regular basis. With your help we will expand our support and mental health services to ensure our service users receive mental health support that they may not have been offered.

You would be a part of our small, friendly, forward-thinking charity team, focused on reaching people affected by this rare, painful and debilitating chronic pain condition and to provide them with psychological support whether they are patients, their partner, relatives, friends or carers. As this service is rapidly expanding, you would have a key role in developing our counselling and psychotherapy programme and to complement our support services that we offer. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to make a real difference in our clients' life which is already isolated and painful, who may not have received any psychological support.
To drive change for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) & ensure people whose lives have been touched by this condition are not alone.
Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that Upbeat Communities achieves its core purpose. They oversee the overall management and administration of the charity, and they also ensure we have a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, they support and challenge the leadership team to enable Upbeat Communities to grow and thrive, and through this, empower refugees to thrive.
Through regular meetings, strategy days and written reports provided to the board, trustees are able to set the direction of the organisation, develop its strategic objectives and support and keep the staff team accountable in delivering on these
strategic goals.
Trustee meetings are currently held every 2 months either in person in Derby or online (hybrid). We have an annual strategy away day and trustees are also invited to be part of our sub-committees. Trustees are requested to be available to attend occasional ‘unscheduled’ meetings or engage in email communications which address urgent business as it arises, join working groups when needed and spend time preparing for meetings by reading and considering the papers circulated before meetings.

Duties
Any individual acting as a trustee for Upbeat Communities would be required to
carry out the following:
- Promote the vision, mission and values of the charity
- Ensure Upbeat Communities and its representatives function within all legal and
- regulatory requirements applicable, and in line with its constitution, continually
- striving for best practice in governance
- Determine the overall direction and development of Upbeat Communities
- through good governance and clear strategic planning
- Approve operational strategies and policies, and monitor and evaluate their
- implementation
- Oversee Upbeat Communities’ financial plans and budgets and monitor and
- evaluate progress
- Review and approve the charity’s financial statements
- Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively
- Provide support and challenge to Upbeat Communities’ Chief Executive in the
- exercise of their delegated authority and affairs
- Contribute to regular reviews of Upbeat Communities’ own governance.
- Attend Board meetings, and be adequately prepared to contribute to
- discussions.
- Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and
- protect the charity’s interests, avoiding any personal conflict of interests
- Take appropriate professional advice in all matters where there may be a
- material risk to the charity
- Maintain confidentiality about all aspects of the trustee’s business
Finance Specific Duties
- Lead on the strategic financial management of the charity at board level
- Liaise with our outsourced finance team (including our Finance Director)
- Chair the finance sub-committee (which meets 6 times per year ahead of every
- board meeting)
- Maintain a clear grasp of the charity’s financial position and ensure full and
- timely financial transparency and information disclosure to the board
- Support the board of trustees in financial decision making processes
- Review and approve annual budgets
- Advise on banking and investments
- Take an active role in the financial audit process
- Contribute to the financial management of our trading subsidiary (Upbeat
- Enterprises Limited)
