Charity Researcher Jobs
ABOUT US
We’re a small, creative and fast-growing charity that was established from inside The Economist in 2012. We support children, aged 10 to 16, from under-served backgrounds to develop essential skills for the modern world. We do this by enabling them to join inspiring discussions about the news, which teach them to think critically, communicate effectively and understand global issues.
Our activities
Our programme, Topical Talk, brings about these discussions in four ways:
- We create world-class teaching resources for classroom discussions about global news stories
- We run Topical Talk Festival: the only news festival for young people. Children from countries all over the world join discussions with each other and global experts; and they work towards publishing their opinions in written, audio and film format for the chance to win awards
- We offer Topical Talk Prizes: collections of resources for a series in-depth discussions about a big global issue or theme, following which students submit their work for the chance to win prizes
- We train and support teachers to bring high-quality news discussions into their classrooms; including through intensive, in-person community partnerships in the UK, US and Nigeria
Our impact
Children who take part in Topical Talk can make seven times more progress compared to their peers in creativity, problem-solving, open-minded listening and confident speaking. These skills are linked with better outcomes at school, in employment and as citizens. Our programme has received international recognition, including by HundrED as one of the top 100 educational initiatives of 2020 and 2021, and as first-prize winner of the UNESCO Global Media and Information Literacy Awards 2022.
Our ambitions
We are at an exciting point in our trajectory. We have demonstrated huge growth potential, going from a small UK pilot in 2013 to working with thousands of teachers globally today, including on-the-ground work in the UK and US. There is still an enormous unmet need, so we have bold plans to reach one million children in 2026, with 100,000 engaging on a weekly basis.
THE ROLE
We’re looking for a qualified teacher or ex-teacher who is excited to play a hands-on role in our team, training and building relationships with Topical Talk teachers in the UK and internationally.
You’ll be responsible, alongside our Teacher Engagement and Development Lead, for supporting teachers to get the most from Topical Talk programmes. You’ll do this by building strong relationships with a range of individual teachers, school groups (for example multi-academy trusts) and organisations. You'll be confident communicating with and motivating teachers, and delivering inspiring teacher training in a range of settings in the UK and internationally. You’ll also work directly with 10- to 16-year-old students on a regular basis, to model lessons to teachers, deliver workshops and facilitate online discussions.
From time to time you will work with our content team to give input into the creation of interactive lessons on news topics. You’ll share ideas for class activities or topics, join idea-generation and feedback sessions, and occasionally draft lessons yourself.
OPPORTUNITIES WE CAN OFFER YOU
- Real impact: you’ll work directly with teachers and students to make a real difference to children’s ability to think critically, listen well, express themselves and understand the big issues of our time
- Growth and development: you’ll join a fast-growing charity with opportunities to grow your skills and responsibility as the organisation takes on bigger challenges. We invest in training and development and will support you to build the skills and experience as you need, for example, working with you to find expert mentors within The Economist Group
- A friendly, driven and highly-effective team: we are deeply committed to being an inspiring, happy place to work, where we learn and achieve things that matter together. We work collaboratively and supportively, with the freedom to use our own judgement and be creative
- Flexible working: our core hours are from 10am to 4pm with a minimum of two days spent in the office each week (Wednesdays and Thursdays)
- Other benefits: Economist Group benefits include a great central-London office (The Adelphi Building near Charing Cross), private medical insurance, a cycle to work scheme and more

Surviving Economic Abuse (SEA) is the only UK charity dedicated to raising awareness of economic abuse and transforming responses to it. Our vision is a world in which all women and girls are economically equal and live their lives free of abuse and exploitation.
Economic abuse is a form of coercive and controlling behaviour: 95% of women who experience domestic abuse will experience economic abuse. It limits their choices and ability to access safety.
We work in partnership to ensure women have access to and control over their own economic resources. We focus on four strategic priorities: public education and awareness-raising; transforming professional responses; ensuring systems do not inadvertently facilitate economic abuse; and influencing policy.
Our work is led by victim-survivors of economic abuse (Experts by Experience). Their lived experience and knowledge shapes everything we do. We are always learning, and we share our expertise via a national working group and an international network of practitioners, researchers and policymakers.
Founded in 2017, we are purposeful and agile in approach. We led the successful call to recognise and define economic abuse within the UK Parliament’s Domestic Abuse Bill. This has created a framework and momentum for change. Our aim now is to ensure that policy and practice recognises economic abuse so that victim-survivors are supported to achieve economic justice and abusers are held accountable for their behaviour.
About the Compass Project
The Compass Project Coordinator will work as part of an exciting new partnership between Surviving Economic Abuse (SEA), Living Without Abuse (LWA) and RISE (Refuge, Information, Support & Education). 1. Collaborate with Compass Project Partners to:

- Develop and maintain key working relationships and partnerships with various stakeholders and partners across the two local sites including the facilitation of links with money and debt advice services, and local financial services.
- Support the collection of qualitative and quantitative data from the network for the purpose of project and external evaluation.

Key responsibilities
It is a hugely exciting time to be working in the online safety field. New regulation created by the Online Safety Act is set to significantly increase companies’ duties to keep users safe, especially children. At the same time, the online issues which families are contending with continue to evolve at pace: from mis- and dis-information in the age of generative AI, to increasing volumes of misogynistic online abuse, and data and privacy risks to name just a few.
There is cross-party consensus on the importance of tackling these issues, and a real appetite for practical, evidence-led solutions.
Against this backdrop, and ahead of a new government, Internet Matters is recruiting a Policy Manager to help ensure that our voice is heard in these conversations, advocating for the interests of children and families to be put first. This wide-ranging role will include:
-
Delivering policy projects on particular issues or themes (e.g. reports, briefings, roundtable events) – and supporting projects from other teams which have policy components. The successful candidate will author external-facing outputs, with support from the wider team.
-
Stakeholder engagement, public affairs and influencing – maintaining and developing a network of contacts across Government, Parliament, regulators, the third sector and industry. Identifying opportunities to push forward our agenda with key decision-makers, including through active participation in meetings and events.
-
Reactive policy work – e.g. monitoring the policy landscape, writing blogs, producing briefings, responding to consultations.
-
Supporting the successful running of our Expert Advisory Panel and Vulnerable Users Working Group, e.g. though producing minutes of discussions, diarising meetings, sourcing speakers, compiling agendas, etc.
-
Contributing your ideas to team discussions about the overarching strategy for our policy and research work.
About you
The successful candidate will have professional experience of working in policy, public affairs, or a closely related field. Knowledge of online safety/tech policy would be beneficial, but is not a requirement.
You may have worked for another charity/not-for-profit, a trade association, in government or in Parliament. You are excited by the opportunities of working in a small organisation, where everyone lends a hand to deliver key priorities, and where you can contribute very actively to our wider thinking and strategy.
Sometimes your work may focus on one or two of the key responsibilities listed above more than the others, in line with organisational need and external developments. We are therefore looking for someone who is comfortable with embracing all aspects of the job, with support, even though you may well have a preference for (or greater experience in) certain aspects of it. We are particularly keen to hear from candidates who have experience of public affairs and influencing work, given that external outreach is likely to be a significant focus for us in the year ahead, but please do still apply if your experience lies more elsewhere (e.g. writing reports).
Skills, knowledge and experience
Essential
-
Professional experience of working in policy, public affairs, or a closely related field.
-
Knowledge of the policymaking process and how it can be influenced, e.g. through Parliament.
-
Excellent analytical skills – ability to read and dissect complex information.
-
Experience of producing high quality written outputs at speed, including reports, briefings and blogs.
-
Ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
-
Project management experience.
-
A flexible and proactive outlook.
Desirable
-
Experience of working in online safety and/or technology policy.
-
Experience presenting and sharing policy and research in a range of settings, including at external meetings and events, tailoring messages to different audiences.
Please note that the postholder may be required to attend occasional evening events or meetings.
All applicants must have legal authorisation to work in the UK.
What else you should know
We offer all employees:
-
28 days holiday per annum plus all UK Bank Holidays.
-
Extra holiday with length of service up to a maximum of 31 days.
-
Hybrid working – split between our office in Central London and home working
-
Option to take two volunteering days each year.
-
Quarterly team events.
-
Season ticket loan scheme.
The deadline for applications is 23.59 on Tuesday 9 July.
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.
