The Director of Operations will play a pivotal role in driving the operational efficiency, financial sustainability, and strategic growth of Well Grounded. This position will lead on programme delivery, financial management, human resources, risk and compliance, governance, and facilities management, ensuring that the organisation operates smoothly and sustainably. 

The post-holder will act as the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), embedding a strong safeguarding culture across the organisation. This is a senior leadership role, requiring a strong background in operations, safeguarding, and strategic management within a social enterprise or charity/education setting. The role will include regular travel to our academies currently based in London, Bristol and due to launch in Leeds this year. Travel will be covered.

Role Overview

The Communications and Community Engagement Specialist will play a pivotal role in shaping the Angelou Centre’s voice and presence across digital and community platforms. This is a creative and strategic position responsible for managing communications, enhancing the organisation’s visibility, and deepening engagement with local communities. About the role:

Birmingham Hippodrome has been entertaining audiences for over 125 years. The Finance Team is crucial to stewarding financial resources, meeting regulatory requirements, providing transactional services and delivering a range of reporting to enable the organisation in deliver its strategic aims.

The Head of Finance is responsible for leading the Finance Team to provide compliant and effective finance services including transactional processing, financial accounting, financial planning and control, initiatives to improve financial performance and delivery of management information which supports strategic and tactical decision making. The post holder will work particularly closely with the Financial Controller and Chief Operating Officer to plan and deliver co-ordinated activity which provides excellent support for the organisation.

The organisation has an ambitious strategy which means that it has grown its workforce and the range of activities it undertakes and has more to achieve. It is taking on more activity with different accounting implications than in the past, such as loans, commercial property management and producing its own work for the stage. Capital projects are underway or having feasibility tested and we are at a point of change in how we work with some partner organisations. This means that we plan to increase capacity for financial planning, balancing capital and revenue expenditure, planning for organisation-wide impacts of activity and supporting partnership working.

As the Head of Finance, you will be pivotal in leading and developing the department and its relationship with both internal and external stakeholders. You will lead on the provision of accounting and financial management services for three companies in the Hippodrome group and some partner organisations, supporting a growing range of activity which brings new technical and support requirements. You will be joining a team of skilled professionals working hard to ensure that Birmingham Hippodrome’s strategic plans are underpinned by effective financial services.

About you:

Ideally you'll have most of the following:

• Fully qualified accountant (ACA/CIMA/ACCA/CIPFA) - this is a must-have
• Technical knowledge of taxation and ability to research and implement new requirements.
• Knowledge and experience of accounting and tax technical considerations in a not for profit setting.
• Experience of reporting requirements of Charity Commission and Companies House.
• Practical experience of producing VAT returns.
• Experience of assessing employment or self-employment status.
• Proficient in implementation and use of accounting software.
• Able to assess and engineer systems of financial control to ensure an appropriate control environment.
• Ability to explain complex financial concepts to a range of stakeholders.

What You’ll Do

• Trusts & grants: Work with the Development & Communications Manager to write and submit compelling funding applications to trusts, foundations and grant-making bodies to secure new and repeat funding.

• Scout for, build and maintain relationships with existing and new funders, donors, and partners, ensuring ongoing engagement and support.

• Events: Plan, organise and manage fundraising events, including overseeing event logistics, participant engagement and post-event follow up.

Job Role: Volunteer and Training Coordinator

About Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone:

Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone is a 21st century youth hub located at the heart of Blackburn and a dedicated site in Darwen, open to young people aged 5 to 25 years old, aiming to change the prospects offered to young people in the area. Our vision is to be at the heart of the community, collaborating to create a more cohesive and prosperous Blackburn and Darwen.

We are one of the leading youth organisations in Blackburn, with a membership of over 2,500 young people. We are open 7 days a week, 52 weeks of the year and offer over 40 different activities and opportunities in our open access youth club.

Context of Role:

The Volunteer and Training Coordinator role will play a key role in supporting the Youth Zone’s mission by managing the recruitment, training, and retention of volunteers. This role is pivotal in ensuring volunteers are well-trained, supported, and empowered to deliver high-quality programs and activities to young people. The coordinator will also oversee the development and delivery of training programs that enhance the skills and knowledge of all volunteers and staff.

Main Responsibilities:

Promote volunteer opportunities through local networks, online platforms, and community organisations.

Meet with potential volunteers undertaking on boarding and other relevant screening procedures.

Ensure that all new volunteers are properly inducted, including the completion of necessary paperwork, safeguarding and health and safety training.

Maintain a volunteer database and track volunteer hours, roles, and training.

Provide ongoing support and guidance to volunteers, ensuring they feel valued and motivated.

Act as the primary point of contact for volunteers, addressing any concerns and resolving conflicts.

Organise regular volunteer catch ups and team-building activities to foster a supportive and cohesive volunteer community.

Coordinate the Youth Zone work placement programme, including the advertising of placements, development of the programme and evaluation of all placements.

Deliver both existing and new training to all Youth Zone staff as and when required

Person Specification:

Essential

Proven experience in volunteer or training coordination, ideally within a youth-focused or community-based organisation.

Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Knowledge of best practices in volunteer management, safeguarding, and youth development.

Remuneration package

Salary: £26,000 (depending on experience and prorated for part time)

Holidays: 33 days (pro rata for part time) days inclusive of 8 Bank Holidays

Pension: Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone operates a workplace pension scheme with Royal London for auto-enrolment purposes. You will contribute 5% of your gross earnings whilst the Youth Zone will contribute 3%. If you meet the criteria you will be auto-enrolled into the scheme within 3 months of commencement of your employment although you have the option to opt-out if you so wish.

This is a blended role, where your work will be dual located between your home and our London Office (NW1 7AW) .  There will be a requirement for flexible out of hours working to support evening and weekend activity. You will be compensated for this with time off in lieu.

At the BHF we believe in the power of being together, so our colleagues on blended contracts can expect to spend some time in their office, at least one day each week, on average.  The use of our office spaces is driven in part by your role and the activities you need to do.  Interview process 

The interview process is planned as one stage. First stage interviews will be held over MS Teams on 6th and 7th May 2025. 

You will be from come from a background involving the creation and management of  fundraising products, projects and/ or appeals, most likely within the charitable sector. You will have an outcome-focussed approach, with experience of managing multi-disciplinary fundraising teams. We would expect an understanding of preparing organisation- and project-level cases for support, and that you are comfortable with achieving financial and non-financial targets – and supporting team members to do the same. You will be a great communicator with a personable style who can work with many different people across the wonderful variety of geography, business development and activities of the Wildlife Trust. 

You will enjoy actively challenging the status quo to find new ways of doing things, looking for good practice and solving problems as they arise. This is a new role which will evolve following your appointment so you should be excited by the flexibility and opportunities to take an innovative approach.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a People Administrator to join our friendly small team on a 12 month fixed term contract. This is a hybrid role; 2-3 days per week in the office with the option of remaining days working from home/remote.  

You will be expected to assist the People Team in delivering a professional, efficient and timely HR service across all people functions in accordance with our values, people policies and HR best practice.

The successful candidate will ideally have:

• Previous administration experience gained in a medium to large sized organisation responsible for a variety of tasks.
• Excellent time management and the ability to effectively prioritise tasks to meet required deadlines
• Awareness of data protection and an understanding of how to manage confidential information.
• Excellent attention to detail and extremely organised.
• Good IT skills including Outlook, Excel, Word, HR database systems and creating reports.

Key aspects of the job will be:

• Assist the transactional People Team activities at all stages of the employee life cycle, including recruitment, onboarding, probations, reference & flexible working requests, changes to terms and conditions paperwork, etc.
• Management and maintenance of HR systems. 100% accuracy of data within all People Team systems (full training will be given).
• To take notes and provide support with formal investigations as required.
• Produce accurate and timely reports, including holiday, sickness absence reporting and HR metrics.
• Manage the People Team HR requests mailbox, supporting operational queries and escalate to the People Managers & Advisors as required.

The role involves providing essential guidance to u3as ensuring they operate smoothly and comply with best practice. The postholder will manage complex queries, lead information sessions and events and guide a dedicated team of staff and volunteers, significantly contributing to the effectiveness, growth and continued success of the u3a movement.
