The Environmental Portfolio at The Pew Charitable Trusts
For more than 30 years, Pew has been a major force in engaging the public and policy makers about the causes, consequences, and solutions to some of the world's most pressing environmental challenges. Our environment work spans all seven continents with more than 250 professionals working at the local, national, and international levels to reduce the scope and severity of global environmental problems, such as the erosion of large natural ecosystems that contain a great part of the world's remaining biodiversity, and the destruction of the marine environment. Pew's global environmental program focuses on science-based, nonpartisan, and sustainable solutions to help protect the planet and people. We work in partnership with governments, Indigenous rights holders, intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, local stakeholders, scientists, and other researchers to advance public policy so that nature and communities can thrive.
Since 1990, Pew has worked in North America, South America and Australia to protect large and critically important terrestrial ecosystems, including rivers and other freshwater resources, coastal temperate rainforests, interior mountain ranges, the northern boreal forests, Australia's Outback, and Chilean Patagonia. We work to ensure these natural systems remain bountiful, functioning, and resilient, providing essential ecological services such as clean air and clean water, sustenance and food security for local communities and more broadly for the welfare of current and future generations. Our work relies on the sciences of conservation, sociology, biology, and economics to advocate for practical and durable solutions to the loss of biodiversity.
In the sea, reforms to how our oceans are managed are essential to address overfishing, pollution, and loss of habitat. Pew began its oceans program in the United States, focusing on ending overfishing and protecting fragile marine habitat. Starting in 2005, Pew's ocean conservation program expanded around the world and played a significant role in reforming marine fisheries management in the European Union and on the high seas and creating large scale marine reserves around the world. Our work is grounded in the best available science and pursues domestic and international conservation measures that are long-term and provide permanent, durable protections for marine ecosystems. We also work to address systemic threats to the ocean, including from plastics, over-and-illegal fishing, seabed mining, and climate change.

Pew's international fisheries work aims to protect marine biodiversity and provide food and livelihoods for a growing population by addressing in specific, targeted contexts one of the ocean's main threats-inadequate management and control of large-scale fishing activities. Organized into three projects, our main areas of work include: the advancement of precautionary harvest strategies and effective compliance regimes for international fisheries (RFMO Policy); improved policies and actions aimed at ending illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing (Ending Illegal Fishing); and the advancement of ecosystem considerations in the management of fisheries (Ecosystem Conservation).

You’ll be a champion of our supporters and come up with ideas and tactics – from digital tools like petitions, to media and working with external partners and allies – that will engage huge numbers of people, and allow us to make real change in the world. We need a campaigns expert who understands politics, the media, digital campaigning, partnership working and what it takes to win campaigns.
The Head of Core Campaigns leads the Campaigns team, overseeing and supporting the development of plans and supporting the team to run impactful, highly engaging campaigns, which aim to shape the country to be fair, respectful and sustainable; and the Public Affairs and Media team, to ensure that we’re taking every opportunity to show decision-makers our muscle and boost our brand and reputation.
Your background and experience
To succeed in this role, you’ll need excellent communication skills, sound political judgement, the ability to thrive when working at pace and to role model a collaborative approach. This is not a hands off role, and you’ll be expected to lead the team, and our ‘one team’ way of working culture, by example.
We are looking for someone who understands 38 Degrees, our model and our organisational culture already, and our fierce determination to change our country – campaigning to do so without fear or favour, whoever is in power.
With experience at working at, or with a similar organisation to us, you’ll be able to demonstrate the ways we can use our greatest strengths – our supporters and our rapid reactivity – to win campaigns by using campaigning, public affairs and media tactics and opportunities to greatest strategic effect.
You’ll have loads of experience in digital-first campaigning, especially knowing how to use a large email list to spark activism, but also will love using a range of digital tools and platforms to give people the power to influence decision-makers.
You understand how to translate complex issues into everyday, understandable language and you’re experienced in running digital and offline campaigns that create change in local, national, political and corporate issue areas.
As you’ll oversee our small Public Affairs and Media team, you’ll know what makes Westminster tick, and how to influence politicians and journalists in every part of the country.
You’ll have experience of working in productive and positive environments, and you’ll have insight into how teams can be set up for success in a campaigning space.
You’ll be adept and experienced at project management, understand the pressures the team face working in a fast paced reactive environment, and be able to get the best of people in this context to help deliver on longer term, strategic goals alongside making the most of quick reactive opportunities.
And most of all, you will be a positive, practical person who can work with others, bringing them with you, to solve problems in a collaborative way.

The Children's Society has been helping children and young people in this country for over 140 years. We run local services that support children when they are at their most vulnerable and in desperate need of help. We're there for children, every step of the way.
Our Research, Evidence and Impact Team is recruiting two new Research, Evidence and Impact Officers to support our work across an extensive portfolio of projects. As well as doing innovative and original research, we collaborate with colleagues to develop the evidence to drive policy and systems change, and with practitioners and managers in our services to support them with independently commissioned evaluation and learning from practice activities. We're also developing new ways to understand, demonstrate and increase the impact of everything The Children's Society does.
OUR TEAM
The Research, Evidence and Impact Team has a vital role in ensuring that The Children's Society retains a clear and authentic understanding of young people's lives, with a focus on what is most important to building or preserving wellbeing. Our charity has been at the forefront of research on children's wellbeing for 20 years, alongside conducting child-centred studies on adolescence, risk and vulnerability (e.g. on Child Exploitation), and child poverty, exploring the issues that jeopardise young people's safety, health and opportunities. We have a track record for innovation (e.g. developing a validated and widely used 'Good Childhood Index') and work with academic partners and other organisations who share our vision of a society built for all children.
Our collaborative culture at The Children's Society means that we often work with colleagues who lead lobbying and campaigning activities, bringing together compelling evidence to drive change - in public awareness and attitudes, and in policies and systems - that can improve young people's lives. We also work closely with colleagues in our services across the country - sometimes to study the issues they see in their frontline work with young people and families, and sometimes to support them when they commission independent evaluations or learning exercises.
The Research, Evidence and Impact Team's work is also pivotal to two flagship reports that The Children's Society publishes every year - 'The Good Childhood Report' and our Annual Impact report.
THE TYPE OF PERSON WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are currently looking for two early career researchers / evaluators who can make a key contribution to the delivery of research, evaluation and impact projects for The Children's Society. You will be joining a team of experienced researchers to work across a varied and exciting range of projects. You will be involved where your input is most needed - and there will be opportunities to develop fresh skills and knowledge.
If you already have strong research/ evaluation skills and the energy and motivation to learn and develop in a supportive, multidisciplinary team in a leading children's charity we would love you to join us.
To be successful in this role, you must have:
-Knowledge and understanding of research and/ or evaluation methodologies, including young person-centred approaches - and an interest in exploring and understanding impact.
-Experience of conducting research and/ or evaluation, from project design through to reporting, whether through a paid or unpaid role or academic studies (ideally both).
-Qualitative and quantitative analysis skills - and demonstrable experience of applying these to research/ evaluation projects.
-Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the confidence to work with a range of stakeholders including professionals in external organisations and, importantly, young people and parents/ carers.
-An understanding of ethics and safeguarding related to research with young people and families.
