We are seeking a new Chair and Deputy Chair for the Ministries Committee to start 1 September 2025, initially for a term of three years, renewable for a further 3 years if appropriate.

The Ministries Committee reports to the Connexional Council, the trustee body of the Methodist Church in Great Britain. The Committee is charged with responsibility to keep in constant review the life of the Methodist Church as it relates to Ministries, ordained and lay, to reflect strategically and review ministries related work that will enable the ministry and mission of the Church to be more effective, and to review the formational and support needs of those who exercise lay and ordained ministry on behalf of the Church.  Working collaboratively with other committee members and with the Mission Committee and Resourcing Committee, you will be experienced in chairing committees and bring a range of circuit experiences and other experiences of the Methodist Church to the work of the Ministries Committee.

Vegetarian for Life (VfL) is the only UK charity specifically dedicated to supporting older vegans and vegetarians. Our trustees work with the CEO and operational team to ensure good governance and realise the strategic aims and development of this unique charity. VfL has experienced sustained growth and impact since it was formed in 2007 and is highly respected for the breadth and quality of its work across care, advocacy, and catering sectors.

To prepare for changes in our board membership during 2025 we are seeking new trustees. Experience of business development including income generation would be particularly welcome.

The role of trustee is a voluntary one although expenses are paid when incurred in connection with the role. The board meets quarterly, mainly via video conferencing but with at least one meeting a year in Manchester where VfL is based. Full board meetings are held on a Saturday. Some communications occur between meetings (usually by WhatsApp or email) and occasionally additional (short) meetings are required to make decisions timeously – these will always be scheduled by arrangement with members.

Role Description: Trustee
To be a Trustee of an organisation is an exciting and fulfilling role and the most effective Boards are ones which benefit from individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds, experiences and skill sets.

The role of a Trustee is to ensure that GFS fulfils its duty to its beneficiaries and delivers on our vision, mission and values.

Key Responsibilities
The statutory duties of a trustee are:
• To ensure the organisation complies with its governing document (articles of association).
• To ensure that the organisation pursues its objectives as defined in its governing document.
• To ensure the organisation applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objectives - the charity must not spend money on activities which are not included in its own objectives.
• To contribute actively to the Board of Trustees’ role in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets.
• To safeguard the good name and values of the organisation.
• To ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.
• To ensure the financial stability of the organisation.
• To protect and ensure the proper investment of the organisation’s funds.
• To appoint the Chief Executive and monitor their performance.
• In addition, with other trustees, to hold the charity “in trust” for current and future beneficiaries by:

The Board of Trustees are jointly and severally responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, its financial health, the impact of its activities and developing the organisation’s aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the governing document, legal and regulatory guidelines.

Beyond the statutory duties of GFS, we ask that our trustees take a supporting role within the organisation to help drive the delivery of the strategy and support the team. This could include activities such as chairing committees/working groups, mentoring members of the team or actively supporting meetings with potential funders for example.

The Role:
This is an exciting opportunity to lead a talented, collegiate and unified Board.
The Chair will hold the Board and Executive Team to account for Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity, mission and vision, providing inclusive leadership to the Board of Trustees, ensuring that each trustee fulfils their duties and responsibilities for the effective governance and advancement of the Charity’s purpose and values. 
The Chair will also support the Chief Executive and ensure that the Board functions as a unit and works closely with the entire Executive of the charity to achieve the agreed objectives. Person Specification:

• Successful track record of achievement through their career. 
• Experience of charity governance and working with or as part of a board of Trustees.

The Role

What will you be doing?

This is an exciting time for the Canaan Trust!

As the refurbishment works near completion on Aspire House to accommodate our new Female Project, we have started the process of appointing staff with the aim of accepting the first clients in January.

Our current Chair of Trustees, having been in post for ten years, has decided that now is the right time to step down from this role at our AGM in January.

We are therefore looking for the right person to lead the Trust into the future, to ensure that as we develop we are meeting the needs of both male and female residents while also supporting those in the community who call on our services.

What are we looking for?

The Trust is looking for someone experienced in organising policies able to lead the trustees in undertaking their duties as set out by the Charities Commission.

What difference will you make?

This is clearly a key role in the life of the charity. There are many challenges involved in helping our residents and those in the community. You will be supported by the current trustees who are totally committed to the work of the Trust.

There is in place a very experienced staff who often go above and beyond in their efforts to support those in need.

Time commitment

The time commitment is flexible given the nature of the role. The Trustees meet bi monthly for Board meetings with sub committee meetings in between.

The Trust has a policy in place for trustee recruitment and an application form. These can be sent to interested parties.

Citizens Advice Cornwall is currently seeking to recruit two to three more volunteer Trustees, including a new Chair of the Trustee Board.
 

The successful candidates will join our Trustee Board, which provides strategic direction and oversight to the charity. We’re looking for ambitious and forward-thinking people to help us deliver on our dual mission of advice and advocacy. 
 

This position would suit someone taking their first steps to develop wider board level experience, and for those who might be new to governance. We welcome applications from all ages and backgrounds, so no matter what experience you have, we will provide full induction, onboarding and regular training for your Trustee role.

We’re looking for people who understand the reasons why people turn to us for help and support, helping us to continually evolve our work with this in mind. We’re also looking for people who have strategic-level experience in one or more areas where we’re building our capability:

With our current Chair coming to the end of their term in September 2025, we’re looking forward to finding our next Chair to lead the Board and bring valuable skills and experience to the organisation.
