Evolve is a leading homelessness charity in London, providing housing and support to over 1,300 people each year. We believe in building on people’s strengths, aspirations and goals to help break the cycle of homelessness and help them move forward with their lives.

Background to the role

Evolve’s long-servicing Chair stepped down due to tenure served at the end of 2024, with our Vice Chair stepping up to Chair. We are now looking to bring support to the role of chairing the board with a Vice Chair who brings experience from the registered housing sector. Evolve is both a registered charity and a registered housing provider. Regulation is complex and ever-increasing for registered housing providers, and the voices of our customers need to take the right position in housing governance. 

Main Responsibilities

The Vice Chair is crucial to the successful running of the organisation. The Vice Chair, in partnership with the Chair, the Board and the Chief Executive, ensures that the organisation operates effectively, setting its strategic vision and delivering its Business Plan.  The Vice Chair assists the Chair in upholding and demonstrating excellence in governance and ensuring that the organisation works within the parameters laid down by its Articles of Association and all regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

• To assist the Chair in ensuring that the Board and the organisation operate effectively in accordance with the Articles of Association, demonstrating the highest standards of governance.
• To assist the Chair in ensuring that all the affairs of Evolve Housing + Support are carried out effectively and in compliance with the requirements of the Social Housing (Regulation) Act, Charities Act, the Companies Act and all regulatory bodies.
• To assist the Chair in ensuring effective internal controls are in place and to ensure compliance with internal financial regulations, standing orders and delegated authorities.

Person Specification

We are seeking to bring individuals to our board with senior level experience in one of these core areas: finance, housing management, maintenance, asset management, compliance, health & safety, development, and safeguarding in housing. It is not necessary to have held a board role previously, however, a knowledge of good governance principles is required.

Key requirements:

• Governance experience, member or Chair of a Board or similar, with knowledge of good governance practice.
• Experience at Executive level within a registered housing provider.
• Current working knowledge of regulatory requirements for social housing providers and key issues facing the sector.
• Strong commitment to equality and diversity; social justice and inclusion.
• Enabling and supportive management style that motivates the Chief Executive, other staff and the Board to deliver the best.

Play a key role in leading the Keats-Shelley Memorial Association as our next Chair of Trustees, to support the preservation and development of the Keats-Shelley House and Museum in Rome, and a range of programmes and events in both Rome and the UK.

About the Keats-Shelley Memorial Association

The Keats-Shelley Memorial Association (KSMA) was founded in 1903 to maintain and support the Keats-Shelley House, an 18th-century Palazzo, at 26 Piazza di Spagna, Rome, now a Museum devoted to the English Romantic poets – John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley and their circle, including Lord Bryon and Mary Shelley, especially those associated with Italy.

The Association is also responsible for maintaining the graves of Keats, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Joseph Severn and Edward Trelawny in the non-Catholic Cemetery at Testaccio.

The Keats-Shelley House is open to the public and performs an educational and cultural role in the life of Rome. The Museum houses one of the world’s most extensive collections of memorabilia, letters, manuscripts, and paintings related to Keats, Shelley, as well as Mary Shelley, Byron, Wordsworth, Robert Browning, Elizabeth Barrett Browing, Oscar Wilde and others. The Keats-Shelley House in Rome offers outreach programmes, lectures, and events and organises a poetry competition for Italian school students.

In the UK, the Association publishes a bi-annual journal, ‘The Keats-Shelley Review’ and periodic newsletters. It organises a range of events such as lectures, poetry readings and dramatic presentations. It also organises the annual Keats-Shelley Prize and Young Romantics Prize for poetry and essay writing. Annual awards ceremonies usually take place in London.

The Association plays an important role in Anglo-Italian cultural relations.

About the role

The Association is a UK-registered charity with a Board of Trustees and three Sub-Committees in the UK for The Keats-Shelley Prizes, Acquisitions and Investments.

The UK Board has 19 Trustees, including the Chair. The Rome Sub-Committee has 16 Members. The Chair of the Rome Sub-Committee is an ex-officio member of the UK Board and a Trustee.

Following a highly successful seven-year term, Sir Ivor Roberts, will be stepping down from being Chair in April 2025 and so the Board of Trustees now seeks a new Chair to succeed him.

As an ambassador and public face of the Association, you will lead the Board and work collectively for the benefit of the Association, for its long-term sustainability and to fulfil its charitable aims.

Who we are looking for

We are keen to encourage applications from a diverse range of candidates who can bring different skills and perspectives and come from a wide range of backgrounds.

In addition to having a strong interest, passion and commitment to the Association and its work, we seek someone with:

• Experience in chairing boards, high-level meetings or senior groups in a commercial or income-generating environment with sound independent judgement.
• An understanding of financial management and the financial and legal duties, responsibilities, risks and liabilities of a charity.
• An interest in Anglo-Italian relations.

We are also looking for someone who is comfortable in an ambassadorial role with the ability to bring added value to the charity through connections which could be in diplomatic, government or financial circles, and willingness to use networks to advance the Association.

Being able to devote the necessary time to meet the responsibilities of the role, including travel and attending events and meetings in the UK and Rome will be vital and whilst knowledge of Italian would be useful, it is not essential.

South West London Law Centres (SWLLC) is an independent registered charity providing specialised legal advice and assistance covering Wandsworth, Merton, Croydon, Kingston-upon-Thames, Richmond-upon-Thames and Sutton in South West London.

What will you be doing?

Our previous chair stood down after an extended term of 6 years. They helped oversee the law centre during the pandemic and its aftermath during which we have seen the law centre continue to flourish in a very challenging environment. We are looking for a new chair who believes in what we do and is prepared to lead and act as an ambassador for the charitable trust so that we can continue to do this work. We currently have a strong trustee board of varying skills and tenures and the day to day management of the law centre is delegated to a small team. This team is small for what the law centre is trying to achieve. We need you to bring your expertise, energy and networks to the law centre. The role isn't glamorous, it's unpaid, and it's sometimes unacknowledged, but it is rewarding. You will play a critical role in helping SWLLC to support over 6,000 people a year, who would not otherwise have access to legal advice. We are very proud of the impact that we have had over the last 50 years, and continue to have. SWLLC continues to operate in a challenging environment, the work of the law centre is regulated and audited by a number of external bodies, our finances continued to be challenged by static legal aid, grants and donations, despite this we have continued to flourish, but the need for our services is greater than we can provide. The main areas that our trustees board can support alongside the role of governance of the law centre are:

• Finance

• IT and facilities
• Community Engagement and Community Activism

Time commitment:

6 Board meetings per year. Take place through a mixture of in person and online meetings in the evenings (usually midweek between 6pm – 7:30pm). The Chair will also need to have regular meetings with the Chief Executive, and Senior Management Team outside of these regular board meetings. Such meetings will typically be brief, online and arranged at a mutually convenient time. The Chair will also need to represent the Charity at various events and meetings with key stakeholders. Our head office is based in Croydon with other offices in Clapham Junction and Morden. We expect the role to take around 1 -2 days per month.

Law Centres are community-led, not-for-profit organisations that help local people to understand and enforce their legal rights. Their services are free, and they attempt to target the people who most need them – people who are at risk of discrimination and ill-treatment and those who are least able to protect themselves, for example because they lack the money to hire someone with legal expertise to help them.  We are currently celebrating our 50th year. SWLLC s is one of the larger Law Centre in Great Britain covering six London boroughs – Croydon, Kingston, Merton, Richmond, Sutton and Wandsworth. Our catchment area covers 1.7 million people. We now operate from 3 branch offices. We help over 6,000 people each year with a face to face service covering 3 broad services.

Salary: The role of Co-Chair is not accompanied by any financial remuneration, although expenses for travel and childcare may be claimed

About us

Women for Refugee Women supports women who have fled persecution including rape, gender-based violence, domestic violence, forced marriage, female genital-cutting, torture, and trafficking to rebuild their lives on their own terms.

Through our programme of creative and educational activities, we support a network of over 650 refugee and asylum-seeking women to develop their confidence and skills. Every woman who joins our network will find a welcoming and supportive space in which she can meet other women and begin to rebuild her life, whether that be through speaking her first words of English or leading campaigns for change. 

Alongside refugee women, WRW campaigns for, and achieves, real change to the asylum system, to ensure that every woman seeking safety in the UK receives a fair hearing. Whether it’s speaking to the mainstream media, performing at arts events, or speaking at Parliament, we support women to campaign on the issues that are affecting them, and by doing so, change hearts and minds.

About the role

WRW is seeking to appoint a Co-Chair ofthe Board of Trustees, who has experience of the asylum system in the UK, or elsewhere, to work alongside the current Chair and ensure that the Board fulfils its responsibilities and that the organisation can realise its mission. 

The role will involve: 

• Working alongside the current Chair of the Board to ensure that all the governance duties of the board are discharged responsibly
• Working in partnership with the Interim Co-Directors and other staff, ensuring that they are supported to put into practice the mission of the organisation and achieve the strategic plan
• Optimising the relationship between the Board of Trustees and staff
• Facilitating the Board of Trustees in stimulating well-rounded discussions and considered decision-making
• Being a strong spokesperson for the charity both internally and externally 

The person

WRW is looking for a strategically-minded individual with a strong commitment to WRW’s values, an understanding of the governance of charities, and a collaborative leadership style.

Essential skills, knowledge and experience include: 

• Experience of the asylum system in the UK, or elsewhere
• A clear and demonstrable commitment to social justice, race equality and feminism
• Experience in senior roles in organisations, including experience of effective chairing and understanding of how to facilitate debate
• Sound knowledge of charity governance with a clear understanding of the duties and responsibilities of trustees and the legal environment in which charities operate

• The ability to understand perspectives of others, to act collaboratively and diplomatically, and to secure collective decision-making

We are looking for a dedicated and inspiring individual to serve as the Chair of Trustees at Kempton Great Engines Trust (KGET) as we embark on an ambitious expansion program.

KGET oversees the Kempton Steam Museum, home to the world's largest operational triple-expansion steam engine, which provided water to much of London until 1980. The Trust not only manages daily operations but also steers the museum's development as a thriving and sustainable visitor attraction.

We have exciting plans to enhance the museum with new facilities for both visitors and volunteers. The new Chair will play a crucial role in advancing these initiatives.

The museum is heavily reliant on our team of volunteers who carry out the technical, operational and front of house activities, several of them having been involved in the original restoration of the engine and the creation of the museum. Our only paid staff member is our bookkeeper. Trustees are actively involved in managing the charity, particularly in fundraising efforts.

We seek a candidate with strategic vision and experience in charity governance, as this background will be invaluable in guiding KGET through its next phase of growth.

Commitment

· Trustees serve for a fixed term of three years and can serve for three consecutive terms.

· Board meetings are normally held every six weeks on a Tuesday evening at the museum in South West London and there will be sub committees to chair and/or attend between main meetings. Trustees also take on specific tasks and activities, which may take 3-4 days a month on average.
