The role of the Chair of Trustees

What is the commitment?

• Chairing full board meetings every two months in person. 6-8pm (usually Mondays) at Lewisham Music’s offices above The Fellowship Inn in Bellingham, SE6 3BT.
• SEL Music Education Ltd. Director meetings, 1-1.5 hours online once every 3-4 months.
• Regular email and phone contact with the CEO, as well as annual performance review meetings.
• Reading of agendas and papers sent out in advance of board meetings. Usually sent at least one week in
• advance.
• Additional reading of documents and emails in between board meetings and on a general basis to support the CEO.
• Attending some events, gigs, and concerts when you can.
• Potentially joining a committee which fits your interests/skills- they meet every 2-4 months for 1-1.5 hours, online.
• Attendance at an occasional board ‘away days’, maximum 1 per year.

Length of appointment

The chair and trustees are initially appointed for a 3-year term from the date of the first full board meeting they attend. Trustees can be re-appointed up to a maximum of 6 years.

As Chair, your commitment to Arts Network (AN) will include chairing Board of Trustee meetings (usually four a year), an annual Trustee strategy session and the Annual General Meeting. AN actively encourage all of our Trustees to visit our programmes and to meet members (our beneficiaries), volunteers and staff in order to build their understanding of their work and to increase their visibility within the organisation. In addition to your responsibilities as a Trustee, the Chair has a leadership role in ensuring that the Board of Trustees fulfils its responsibilities for the effective governance of the charity.

Principal responsibilities of the Chair

Strategic leadership

• Provide leadership to the charity through its Board of Trustees, ensuring that the charity has maximum impact for its members and other beneficiaries.
• Ensure the charity has a clear vision, mission and strategic direction, and is focused on achieving this.
• Ensure regular contact with the CEO of AN and maintain an overview of the Charity’s affairs, providing support as and when necessary. Governance
• Ensure that AN complies with charity law and with the requirements of the Charity Commission as regulator – in particular to ensure that the charity prepares appropriate reports on what it has achieved and Annual Returns and Accounts as required by law.
• Ensure that Arts Network remains true to its charitable purpose and objectives.
• Act with integrity and avoid any personal conflicts of interest or misuse of charity funds or assets.
• Ensure that AN has a governance structure that is appropriate to a charity of its size/complexity, stage of development and its charitable objects, and keep this under review.
• Ensure that any major risks to which AN is exposed have been reviewed and that systems have been established to mitigate these risks.
• Ensure the Board of Trustees is periodically refreshed through clear procedures of election and inclusive and diverse recruitment, to incorporate the right balance of skills, knowledge and experience, with adequate training and induction.
• Establish any appropriate sub-committee structures if needed.
• Sit on appointment and disciplinary panels if needed.
• Represent the charity at external functions, meetings and events.

Rochdale and District Mind is a mental health charity that supports people in the community who are facing mental health challenges. We are flexible in our approach and are open to a single Chair or Co-Chair arrangement. We are looking for strong governance experience and the ability to lead. This is an exciting time for the Society of Genealogists. With membership income rising and funds available for development, it now seeks to shape its future through a new strategic plan.

Job Description

Role: Chair

Term of Office: Up to 6 years, with renewals every 2 years.

Purpose: To chair the Board of Trustees of the Society of Genealogists, ensuring that the charity runs legally and is provided with firm strategic direction.

Responsibilities (specific to the role of chair):

• To represent the Society and act as its spokesperson at external and internal functions, meetings, conferences, exhibitions.
• To lead the Board of Trustees in setting and monitoring implementation of the Society’s Strategy.
• To monitor the performance of the Chief Executive Officer (“CEO”), including a formal annual review against objectives.
• To oversee, or directly manage, the selection of new trustees from time to time to maintain sufficient trustees with the appropriate mix of skills.
• To plan, in consultation with the CEO, the annual cycle and set agendas for the Board of Trustees meetings, the AGM and any extraordinary meetings.
• To chair and facilitate meetings of the Board of Trustees and associated special meetings/committees.

The Centre provides support groups and an excellent space for socialising which helps to prevent feelings of isolation. Introduction to the role: 

The Chair of Trustees will provide leadership and direction to the Board of Trustees and centre staff ensuring that the governance and strategic direction of the charity is being fulfilled. The Chair will support and sometimes challenge the team and ensure the Board functions as a unit and works closely with the wider team to achieve our aim to continue to be an exceptionally well run and sustainable organisation so that we can make the greatest practical impact for people managing their lives with MS.

Key Responsibilities: 

Leadership and Governance 

• Provide leadership to the charity and team ensuring the charity has the maximum impact for members and users and follows the vision/missions stated in the Strategic Plan. 

• Ensure the Board and Staff fulfil their obligations, duties and responsibilities for the effective governance of the charity. 

• Ensue the Board operates within the charities objectives as stipulated within the Articles of Association. 

• Lead the Board and ensure it operates as a team, engaging all Trustees and fostering a culture of open discussion and debate. 

• Ensure the operation of the centre is realised and systems are in place to manage and mitigate risks 

• Chair bi-monthly Board Meetings and other meetings such as Finance and Health and Safety where appropriate. 

• Act as the support mechanism and critical friend for the Centre Manager and team for operational and strategic queries. 

• Work with Trustees and the Centre Manager to recruit and appoint new Trustees and staff and ensure they receive induction, training and support. 

• Undertake an annual appraisal for the Centre Manager. 

• Perform annual remuneration reviews in consultation with the Board. 

External Duties 

• Act as an ambassador for and represent the charity at external meetings, events and functions. 

• Build strong relationships with other MS charities, local charitable organisations, funding partners and key stakeholders.

• Lead the Trustees in developing, agreeing and implementing the Strategic Plan. 

• Ensue the plan is robust and regularly reviewed and/or amended. 

• Work with the Centre Manager to agree priorities aligned with the Strategic Plan.

• Experience of working at a leadership level within a charity or organisation.

Additional Information: 

• The position requires between 10 - 15 hours per calendar month with regular duties including chairing board and sub-committee meetings, ad hoc visits to the Centre, supporting the Centre Manager and training. 

• Board meetings are preferably in person but can be via zoom if required. 

• The position is voluntary and as such not remunerated however reasonable expenses incurred in the course of duties will be reimbursed and travel expenses may be claimed.

We are looking to strengthen our Board of Trustees with up to three new Trustee appointments, including Chair of Trustees. We are seeking volunteers from a diverse range of backgrounds to join Bristol Animal Rescue Centre (Bristol A.R.C.) as a Trustee to help make a difference to Bristol’s most vulnerable animals.

As a Trustee, you will have the chance to influence our strategy and directly support our teams of experts in the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming or release of animals that come into our care.
You will serve on the governing body of the charity and be instrumental, alongside your fellow Trustees, in providing the governance that supports the CEO and senior management team in the successful running of the organisation.

We are particularly interested to hear from candidates with relevant experience in the following areas: Animal Welfare, Fundraising & Communications and Governance.

Role of the Trustee

The ultimate responsibility of our Board Members is to ensure that Bristol A.R.C. works towards its mission, values and objectives in an effective, fair and legal manner. Duties will include:

• Regular attendance at Board meetings, taking place either online or at our Bristol centre, at least 6 times a year and additional trustee meetings and participation in subcommittees. The subcommittees are typically run within usual working hours.
• Ensure that Bristol A.R.C. complies with charity law and Charity Commission requirements and its governing documents.
• Oversight of the strategic, financial and governance position of the charity.

Background

The Society of Genealogists (“the Society”) is an educational charity founded in 1911 and is custodian of an extensive and exciting collection of diverse historical and modern, physical and digital records. The Society’s staff and volunteers include experienced and knowledgeable genealogy professionals, with remarkable knowledge and experience of genealogy. 

Chair of the Trustees

The Chair of the Trustees may serve a maximum of three terms of two years before being required to step down. Following the successful tenure of the present Chair, the Society is seeking to recruit the next Chair commencing from the AGM in July 2025, to continue to lead the Society in its continuing ambition to deliver a rewarding research and membership experience to all of its members in the UK and internationally; ensuring it continues to be a thriving organisation through the next stage of transformation and explores opportunities for growth.

Job Description

Role: Chair

Term of Office: up to 6 years, with renewals every 2 years.

Purpose: To chair the Board of Trustees of the Society of Genealogists, ensuring that the charity runs legally and is provided with firm strategic direction.

Responsibilities (specific to the role of chair):

• To represent the Society and act as its spokesperson at external and internal functions, meetings, conferences, exhibitions.
• To lead the Board of Trustees in setting and monitoring implementation of the Society’s Strategy.
• To monitor the performance of the Chief Executive Officer (“CEO”), including a formal annual review against objectives.
• To oversee, or directly manage, the selection of new trustees from time to time to maintain sufficient trustees with the appropriate mix of skills.
• To plan, in consultation with the CEO, the annual cycle and set agendas for the Board of Trustees meetings, the AGM and any extraordinary meetings.
• To chair and facilitate meetings of the Board of Trustees and associated special meetings/committees.
• To provide support and delegate assignments as necessary to the Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees.
• To provide direction, support and impartial objective advice to the Board, individual Trustees and the Society as a whole covering: policymaking, liaison with honorary officers and with chairs of other committees.
• To liaise with the CEO in order to maintain an overview of the affairs of the Society, and to provide support as appropriate.
• To participate in personnel management grievance and disciplinary matters as defined by the personnel policies of the Society.
• To support and contribute to the development of the Board of Trustees, facilitating succession planning, change and conflict resolution.
   

Essential Skills/Qualities:

• Knowledge and experience of the voluntary and community sectors; understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities of trusteeship.
• To work at all times with integrity, objectivity, and honesty.
• Awareness of the commercial realities of a not-for-profit organisation and ability to balance the variety of requests from membership while ensuring financial stability.
• Proven leader with insight, independent judgement, and ability to think creatively in order to drive the development and realisation of the Society’s strategic vision.
• Experience in a board or senior executive role, leading teams and chairing efficient decision-making forums, through effective communication and interpersonal skills including impartiality, fairness, good listening skills, a willingness to speak out where necessary with tact and diplomacy, and an ability to respect confidence and confidentiality.
• Willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to the Society.
   

Desirable Skills/Qualities

• Understanding of the genealogy sector/market and the Society’s respective position therein.
• Experience in overseeing IT/digital projects and / or multifaceted change programmes.
• Experience in analysis of competitive position.
• Familiarity with and experience of reviewing financial accounts, budgeting, and financial controls.
• Demonstrable ability to develop a strong public profile amongst SOG members and in the genealogy community and to provide a strong contribution to fundraising from donations, grants, and legacy-giving.
   

General Responsibilities (with all Trustees):

• To ensure that the Society complies with its governing document (including pursuing its objects as defined therein), charity law, company law, and any other relevant legislation or regulations.
• To ensure that the resources of the Society are applied exclusively in pursuance of its objects.
• To contribute actively to the Board of Trustees in giving firm strategic direction to the Society, including setting overall policy, defining goals, evaluating performance against agreed targets and implementation of decisions made by the Board of Trustees.
• To safeguard the reputation and values of the Society.
• To ensure the effective and efficient administration of the Society.
• To ensure the Society has financial stability and aims to deliver profits to reinvest in its services.
• To protect and manage the property of the Society and the proper investment of its funds.

There hasn’t been a more important moment for the refugee cause. With the issue often at the top of the political agenda, how the UK meets the needs of those seeking safety on our shores is one of the key questions of our time.

The Refugee Council is at the forefront of both the political and public debate, and at the forefront of meeting the needs of refugees and people seeking asylum. Our services reach around 14,000 men, women and children across England. As the oldest charity working with refugees in the UK – founded in 1951 when the UK was one of the founding signatories of the UN Convention - we have a proud history of being a leading provider of support and services, and the preeminent voice on refugee issues.

The charity is in a good financial position with a strong executive leadership team and board of trustees united in delivering against a clear mission, vision and strategy. Following the change in Government last year, we have already achieved some important reforms and there are opportunities to achieve more. We are also embarking on the development of a new five year strategy that will build on the organisational change already achieved in delivering our current strategy.

We are interested in receiving applications from candidates who have board level experience. We have previously recruited to the board those with authentic/lived experience of the refugee and asylum system within the UK, and we continue to welcome applications from those who have first-hand experience of the refugee protection process. Additionally, we would welcome a range of diverse candidates from different socioeconomic, cultural and geographic backgrounds across the UK. We understand that sometimes these and other protected characteristics intersect and welcome those who are currently underrepresented across charity boards. 

The role is non-remunerated but all expenses incurred in carrying out the role are reimbursed. Being based in London is not a requirement for the role.

The Elizabeth Casson Trust was established in 1948 to further the profession of occupational therapy and support the development of occupational therapists within the UK and beyond. We have developed as an organisation through the years but have always worked to stay true to the pioneering spirit of Dr Elizabeth Casson.

The Trust supports the development of occupational therapists through a variety of funding opportunities that focus on clinical and leadership skills, research and its translation into practice.

Time commitment

The Board meets four times a year, twice online (January and July) and twice in person in London (April and October), with our April meeting combining our Away Day and our October meeting our AGM.

The time commitment is the equivalent of 2 – 3 days a month, which includes meeting preparation, ad hoc conversations with the trustees, 1:1s with our Executive Officer, and representation at external events. Our Chair also attends our Finance Advisory Group usually once a quarter for 30 minutes online.

Who we are

Being Alongside was founded 40 years ago to help promote a holistic approach to supporting those experiencing mental health difficulties.

The charity has a Christian foundation, operating non-denominationally and working with local groups which directly support individuals by ‘being alongside’ them through challenging times.

The role

​Do you want to join us on the journey of improving the care offered to those with mental health difficulties?

We are looking for a new Chair and up to three new Trustees to help us on our mission to improve spiritual and pastoral care in the mental health field.

Our primary activity is to encourage and support local projects, specifically drop-in café style initiatives and befriending schemes, including through the provision of seed corn funding for new projects.

We are a small charity with around 100 registered supporters, and one part time administrator. Expenditure has exceeded income for the last few years, but the trustees have adopted an ambitious approach to using our historic reserves to support new projects which deliver our charitable objects in communities across the country.

We are looking for a Chair (or individuals interested in being a Co-Chair) and Trustees to help navigate the next stage of the charity’s journey, including taking decisions on future fundraising strategy.

We are particularly keen to attract trustees with accounting/finance, governance or fundraising experience, and hope to appoint new office holders from May 2025 for an initial period of three years.

Trustee meetings are held once a quarter, for two hours, usually in central London. While online attendance is possible, we encourage trustees to attend in person for at least two meetings per year. Trustees are also encouraged to attend occasional events organised by the charity.
