Job Description

The Director of Finance role is essential in maintaining the charity's fiscal health, supporting income generation, and managing financial risks. It will provide strategic support to the Executive Leadership Team and strategic direction and oversight to a large and diverse finance team, ensuring robust financial management, proactive financial planning and commercial decision support.

This role is one of the Senior Leaders of the Business Services Directorate, which includes essential support functions such as finance, HR operations, technology, data, property, procurement, audit & assurance, legal, and company secretary. The Director of Finance reports directly to the Corporate Director of Business Services, who also serves as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

The Director of Finance will lead a team of approximately 70 finance colleagues and manage an expenditure budget of up to £35 million.

The key responsibilities include:

• Developing and implementing financial strategies to support the charity's goals, ensuring the charity's funds deliver the most positive impact for children and young people.
• Supporting and driving income growth and commercial decision making in the business development, retail and fundraising teams.
• Leading and mentoring the finance team, ensuring they provide high-quality financial data and support.
• Managing the charity's reserves, investments, and treasury functions.
• Overseeing budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting processes.
• Maintaining the highest standards of financial control and compliance.

The Successful Applicant

Experience in a voluntary or public sector environment is not necessarily required. Alignment with the charity's mission and values, a strong track record and a commercial outlook is more important.

Education/Knowledge

• A qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA or equivalent) with significant financial and management accounting knowledge and an robust understanding of financial control frameworks and cash flow and treasury management.

Experience

• Experience of operating at a senior level in large complex organisations with geographically spread operational delivery models.
• Proven experience in a group accounting structure and of project management.
• Experience of engaging and influencing a range of stakeholders, including at Board level, with complex information in a clear, simple and straightforward manner which enables and empowers them to act accordingly.
• Proven track record of successful leadership, making complex decisions and recommendations and acting as a champion of change.
• Experience of collaboration and engagement with non-finance managers, including those from other specialisms, to deliver organisational and operational objectives.
• Significant experience of using financial systems and technology to drive change and efficiency. Microsoft D365 experience advantageous. Other standard package, experience (particularly Excel) also expected.
• Demonstrable ability to plan and organise high volume workloads and conflicting scheduling and client priorities for the department ensuring timely achievement of deadlines.

• Provide strong leadership to Centre Managers and operational teams by motivating, inspiring and challenging them to develop both themselves and their business
• Design, implement and manage income and expenditure budgets across each centre, ensuring that forecasts are kept up to date throughout the year. 
• In partnership with the Facilities Manager, ensure that centres always remain safe and compliant, ensuring that timely action is taken to address faults or hazards as required.

Other essential criteria

• Regular travel across the UK is a key part of this role.  A full UK driving licence is therefore essential as lots of our centres are not easily accessible by public transport.

Customer relationship management (CRM) (10% of work)

• Managing company databases, including tracking and managing donor information and regular reporting to the Board of Trustees. Relevant programmes include Salesforce, Mailchimp and the website backend. No prior experience with these programmes required - training will be provided.
• Using data to facilitate ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the team’s progress in fundraising, sales and marketing, and addressing points of inefficiency to optimise conversions.
• Supporting website development and maintenance, including updating copy and visuals, and liaising with web developer.

An excellent opportunity to join the established fundraising team at The Edinburgh Children's Hospital Charity. Fundraising experience is an advantage but not essential for this post -a can do attitude with buckets of enthusiasm is ! This post is an 'all rounder' fundraising position within the team. 

Main duties / overview: 

• To spearhead building strong, positive relationships, generating leads and converting these into fundraising activity.
• Lead by example and galvanise the fundraising team to follow suit.
• Create a solid pipeline of support from a variety of sources, including (but not limited to) families who use the hospital, businesses, community groups and organisations, hospital staff, schools etc.
• Provide top class supporter care, excellent stewardship and solid process management.
• Use your established sales/customer facing/fundraising skills and expertise to support fellow team members to meet overall team income goals; you will comfortably cross-sell and up-sell products and engagement opportunities to supporters and maximise every opportunity.
• Generate and encourage ‘supporter led’ fundraising activity.
• Supported by your line manager, you will deploy your skills, strengths and energy where they are needed most.
• You will build, utilise and motivate a strong volunteer team to help deliver the fundraising goals.

The Commercial Strategy Team is responsible for driving the Professional Learning Services 5-year growth strategy through data, insights and business development. Job purpose

The NSPCC is seeking an Data and Insights Manager to join the Commercial Strategy Team within the Professional Learning Services department (PLS). The successful applicant will be experienced in developing data strategies, managing data teams  as well as have experience of presenting customer and market insights to influence commercial decision making.

This is a new role which provides the opportunity to lead a growing team and shape and develop how the PLS department uses customer and performance data to help us grow our income, shape our product offer and reach more professionals to keep children safe.

Candidates should have a keen eye for detail and be confident communicating data strategies and insights to their stakeholders, plus have a willingness and drive to want to create change for children.

The key aspects of this role are:

• Take responsibility for creating and implementing the PLS data strategy to move towards creation of a single customer view.

• Take responsibility for the delivery of the following areas for the department: data systems and processes, performance and customer data visualisation , market insights and reporting

• To lead, manage and develop the PLS Data and Insights team in line with corporate standards in order to  grow our capacity and ability to use customer and product data

Main duties and responsibilities

• Take overall responsibility for developing and implementing the PLS data strategy to move towards creation of a single customer view, covering areas such as data systems, data visualisation tools and market insights

• Individually and/or through the team, to implement agreed strategies to maximise efficiency and effectiveness of data reporting and systems in line with PLS business plan and priorities.

• To recruit, train, develop and manage the PLS Data and Insights team  in line with NSPCC policies and practice including regular team meetings and regular performance reviews, coaching and mentoring staff to achieve high performance, growth and personal development.

• To work with the Marketing and Planning team to provide accurate data and insights to help inform our departmental annual marketing plan

• Take overall responsibility for all market insights, research and competitor analysis to inform our pricing strategy and product portfolios

• To be responsible for improving the data quality of the department, introducing audits and processes to achieve best practice

• To be accountable for accurately reporting on the corporate impact measures and Key Performance Indicators for the department in line with directorate and organisation wide requirements

• Support all users, including the Senior Leadership Team, with ad-hoc deep dive analysis & insight requests.

• Work with colleagues in the Tech directorate to support the implementation of any new data systems, processes and platforms as part of a wider tech project

• Take responsibility for integrating the PLS department into any cross directorate data projects

• Identifying opportunities through data-driven analysis to incorporate into sales and marketing activity that targets new and existing customers including opportunities to cross-sell across different NSPCC Learning products and services.

• To be accountable for the development of relationships with internal customers supported by the team, including pro-actively improving knowledge and understanding of internal customers and their role to support the NSPCC’s aims.

Person specification

1. Highly developed experience analysing data (ideally customer and audience data) and delivering insights to inform commercial decision making

2. Highly developed knowledge and experience of data management systems and ability to use statistical and data analysis packages

3. Experience of creating and delivering data strategies to improve business performance

4.  Experience in using data visualisation tools to create dashboards that improves efficiency and enables self-serve insight

5. Ability to build, manage and develop relationships within an organisation and externally and achieve objectives through these relationships.

6. The ability to plan, monitor and implement projects and initiatives, identifying conflicting demands and establishing clear priorities, and ensuring that own work and work of others is completed to a high standard.

7. Excellent presentation skills and ability to write reports both verbally and in writing

8.  Experience in using Microsoft based software packages, CRM systems, databases, Power BI and applications.

This role would suit an entrepreneurial self-starter with significant fundraising experience and a demonstrable track record of securing funds from Trusts and Foundations. The role requires effective management of existing relationships and the ability to work strategically to attract new support. You will have a sound understanding of individual and corporate fundraising, planning campaigns and events with the ability to develop and deliver revenues from the same.
