Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that Upbeat Communities achieves its core purpose. They oversee the overall management and administration of the charity, and they also ensure we have a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, they support and challenge the leadership team to enable Upbeat Communities to grow and thrive, and through this, empower refugees to thrive.

Through regular meetings, strategy days and written reports provided to the board, trustees are able to set the direction of the organisation, develop its strategic objectives and support and keep the staff team accountable in delivering on these
strategic goals.

Trustee meetings are currently held every 2 months either in person in Derby or online (hybrid). We have an annual strategy away day and trustees are also invited to be part of our sub-committees. Trustees are requested to be available to attend occasional ‘unscheduled’ meetings or engage in email communications which address urgent business as it arises, join working groups when needed and spend time preparing for meetings by reading and considering the papers circulated before meetings.

Duties

Any individual acting as a trustee for Upbeat Communities would be required to
carry out the following:

• Promote the vision, mission and values of the charity
• Ensure Upbeat Communities and its representatives function within all legal and
• regulatory requirements applicable, and in line with its constitution, continually
• striving for best practice in governance
• Determine the overall direction and development of Upbeat Communities
• through good governance and clear strategic planning
• Approve operational strategies and policies, and monitor and evaluate their
• implementation
• Oversee Upbeat Communities’ financial plans and budgets and monitor and
• evaluate progress
• Review and approve the charity’s financial statements
• Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively
• Provide support and challenge to Upbeat Communities’ Chief Executive in the
• exercise of their delegated authority and affairs
• Contribute to regular reviews of Upbeat Communities’ own governance.
• Attend Board meetings, and be adequately prepared to contribute to
• discussions.
• Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and
• protect the charity’s interests, avoiding any personal conflict of interests
• Take appropriate professional advice in all matters where there may be a
• material risk to the charity

Finance Specific Duties

• Lead on the strategic financial management of the charity at board level
• Liaise with our outsourced finance team (including our Finance Director)
• Chair the finance sub-committee (which meets 6 times per year ahead of every
• board meeting)
• Maintain a clear grasp of the charity’s financial position and ensure full and
• timely financial transparency and information disclosure to the board

Are you interested in penguins?!  Falklands Conservation are looking for their next treasurer/Finance lead trustee and non-executive director. 

Falklands Conservation is a non-governmental organisation working to protect the wildlife in the Falkland Islands for future generations. We undertake practical conservation projects, surveys and scientific studies, conduct annual monitoring of seabird populations, rehabilitate oiled penguins, publish guides and information on many aspects of the Falkland Islands environment, and involve Islanders of all ages in our activities. 

Falklands Conservation is a UK registered charitable company started in 1998 when it took over the activities and assets of a charitable trust founded in 1979 by Sir Peter Scott.

This role is for a trustee who will act as global treasurer and be the lead trustee for finance, investments and audit.Our next Treasurer will continue the oversight of our finances and investments, providing specific support and direction on all matters money-related.  They will advise the other trustees on these matters and support the finance team of the organisation.

This is an ideal opportunity for someone who would like experience of a non-executive role on a board (an existing trustee will act as a mentor).  It's a unique opportunity to get involved in an international conservation charity that makes a real difference in a location where nature is in charge.

This is a voluntary role without remuneration.

The Opportunity

We are excited to be recruiting for a Finance Trustee at The Difference. As well as fulfilling the duties of a Trustee, the Finance Trustee maintains an overview of The Difference’s financial affairs. The Finance Trustee supports The Difference’s Director of Finance and Finance team with strategic oversight to ensure that effective and appropriate financial measures, controls and procedures are in place and holds the Exec to account about the financial health of the organisation. 

Finance Trustee role

• Overseeing the presentation of budgets, internal management accounts and annual financial statements to the Board of Trustees. 

• Ensuring that robust and comprehensive financial policies are in place and being implemented, and supporting the development of policies covering financial reserves, and cost management. 

• Advising on the financial viability of the charity. 

• Overseeing financial controls and adherence to systems, regularly liaising with the Director of Operations. 

• Advising on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plan, including overseeing the charity’s financial risk-management process and annual remuneration review

• Ensuring investments and assets are maximised.

• Oversee the development and implementation of systems for appraising, mitigating and reporting corporate risk. 

• Keeping the board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities and liaising with the Director of Operations to develop the financial understanding of the Board of Trustees.

What we are looking for

• A finance professional. A knowledge of charity finance is an advantage. Otherwise an enthusiasm to learn, drawing from sound commercial experience and an understanding of SMEs.

• A strategic thinker with an ability to balance risk and opportunity.

• Clear communicator with the ability to bring the financial information alive to non-finance specialists.

As a small charity, there will be times when the trustees will need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings. This may involve scrutinising board papers, leading discussions,  focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, presenting externally, or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.

Terms of appointment

Terms of office

• Trustees are appointed for a 3 year term of office, renewal for 1 further term to a maximum of 6 years.

• This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.

Time Commitment

• Attending 4 Board meetings annually. Currently meetings are held in person at a Central London, however attendees are also able to join virtually.

• Quarterly scheduled meeting with the Director of Operations with flexibility to respond swiftly to the occasional ad hoc issue.

• Annual recommended visit to a school or centre with Alternative provision.

Committee membership

• The Finance Trustee sits on the Remuneration Committee which meets annually to agree staff remuneration for the year ahead.

• The Finance Trustee will also sit on the Finance & Risk Committee which convenes on an ad hoc basis as required.

Why Work for The Difference?

Schooling isn’t working for the children who need it most. Every week in England 109 children – equivalent to three full classrooms – are permanently excluded. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Since the pandemic, school suspensions have risen significantly, as has persistent absenteeism. 1 in 5 children are missing more than 10% of their time in school. Children who are excluded or persistently absent are much more likely to already be experiencing vulnerability or disadvantage. They are more likely to live in poverty, have additional learning needs, suffer mental health challenges, or experience a lack of safety outside school. Certain ethnicities are also disproportionately affected, notably Gypsy Roma Traveller and black Caribbean children. 

Exclusion and high rates of absence can have a dramatic effect on life chances. These young people are more likely to drop out of education or employment, become vulnerable to long-term mental ill health, or be at risk of criminal exploitation. The Difference believes that children and young people deserve better and that the education system has to change.

Our Organisation 

The Difference is a young education charity, founded to change the story on lost learning.  By 2030, we want rates of exclusion and absence to be falling nationally and for schools to be better equipped to support all children, including those who may be vulnerable.
The Difference was born out of a year of research into school exclusions with think-tank IPPR. This research identified a lack of inclusion expertise in schools and proposed a new leadership development programme to fill this gap. In 2018, Difference founder Kiran hired the team who took this idea from concept to reality, beginning work with our first schools.

The Difference is now a 22-strong team delivering multiple school leadership programmes, alongside a growing research and policy arm. The team is supported by our Youth Advisory Board, made up of young people who have experienced exclusion and who provide their expertise and insights on how school inclusion work should be done. This work is needed more than ever. Effects of COVID-19, coupled with the spiralling cost of living, have substantially increased levels of vulnerability. Schools serving excluded pupils face under-funding. The Difference has had excellent early impact but there is work ahead to capture this, share learning with schools and policy-makers, and grow our capacity to lower exclusions across England.

Glebe House is a well respected Leicestershire charity that provides a range of services to adults and children with learning disabilities. We are looking for new Trustees to join the Board to contribute to our success for many years to come.
The Board is responsible for the overall governance, financial scrutiny & the strategic direction of Glebe House, whilst developing the organisation’s aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the governing document and legal & regulatory guidelines.

In the toughest times, Willow creates tailored experiences that give people a boost and bring families closer together. We are the only UK charity that supports seriously ill 16 to 40-year-olds, creating magical moments which become shared memories that last a lifetime.

Since Willow was founded in 1999, we have provided more than 21,000 Special Days, Special Breaks and Special Treats, but we see this as only the first part of Willow’s journey and a base for further growth. We currently provide around 1,000 treats, days or breaks each year which means that we only reach a small percentage of those who would benefit from our services. We would love to be able to do more.

This is a pro bono appointment which brings rewards and if you would like to make a difference in our world, this is a great opportunity to bring your skills, knowledge and experience to help us deliver on our mission.

Travel expenses directly incurred in our roles as Trustees on official business can be reimbursed. Board and Committee meetings are held in person or remotely with in person meetings normally held in London.

Trustees are appointed for an initial three-year term with the opportunity to extend for a further two, three-year periods.

The time commitment is to attend 4 Board meetings a year plus relevant committee meetings. There are always opportunities to become more involved with specific projects, and trustees are strongly encouraged to attend at least 1 Willow fundraising event each year.

Specifics about the role

Willow seeks to appoint a new Board member as part of our succession planning. We are keen to hear from candidates who have skills or expertise in fundraising:

• Worked as a senior fundraiser in a charity with a range of public fundraising methods, and are used to setting targets and reviewing the effectiveness of different streams of income.  At Willow, you will help to scrutinise and enhance our fundraising strategy and may have experience of data insight and interrogation

You will be joining a dedicated team of Trustees. We currently have 10 board members with a variety of backgrounds and experience including finance, investments, fundraising, PR and communications, management consultancy, events, and legal.  Our trustees work closely with the Chief Executive, leadership team and senior members of the team.

Wolfram Syndrome UK (WSUK)

WSUK is a small national charity based in West Sussex that supports children, young people and adults affected by Wolfram Syndrome (WS) and their parents/wider families. WS is an ultra-rare genetic disorder which causes a complex range of symptoms, including diabetes mellitus, vision problems, renal problems, deafness, and neurological problems. WSUK provides current, accurate and family-friendly information, raises awareness of WS among health professionals and the public, and helps to fund WS research. 

WSUK Treasurer

The WSUK Board is seeking to recruit a Treasurer to complement and extend the range of skills and experience of its current members. This voluntary role will maintain an overview of WSUK’s activities to ensure its financial viability and that proper financial procedures are maintained. Through active participation in quarterly Board meetings (on-line), this role will help WSUK to achieve its ambitions to continue to develop the activities and services it delivers to the WS community.

Skills and experience

WSUK is seeking a treasurer who is committed and motivated to help lead this small, but growing charity. Some financial experience and skills are needed, along with good independent judgement, an ability to communicate clearly and a team-oriented approach. You will become an important part of a dynamic charity, and you will be able to see how your involvement, skills and experience, directly benefit the people living with this challenging, ultra-rare condition.

Treasurer role description

Summary of the role:

The overall role of the Treasurer is to maintain an overview of the organisation’s affairs, ensure its financial viability and ensure that proper financial records and procedures are maintained.

Overall responsibilities:

· Ensuring proper records are kept and effective financial procedures and controls are in place.

Our Vision Every parent has the support they need to give their children the best start in life. 

Home start West Berkshire is looking to recruit 2 or 3 new Trustees to join our Board.  We have been supporting families in West Berkshire since 1997 using a volunteer model that allows us to reach  families with children under five at what can be a difficult and stressful time. What we do.

We provide support for families with children aged 0 to 5 who may be facing physical or emotional issues and who are finding the challenge of bringing up young children overwhelming. By offering support to families through their toughest times we ensure that parents have the support they need to give their children the best start in life. Home-Start’s ethos is to empower and enable, allowing families to develop self-resilience and confidence in their ability to cope with challenging situations and integrate more within their own communities. 

How We Do It. 

Using a volunteer led model, we provide support to parents through home visits, family and post natal depression groups and a baby bank. A nurturing and caring culture is central to our work. Our volunteers are invited in to their homes by families, building empathy and trust to help provide community centred, accessible, non-judgmental relational support. We believe that engaging and embracing a broad spectrum of diverse lived experience is fundamental to our shared learning experience. Our trustees, staff and volunteers are committed to living and learning the values and behaviours which best facilitate this approach.

The commitment.

Our board of trustees meets four times each year with at least one additional date set aside for strategy review and development. Trustees are alo encouraged to spend time getting to know other Trustees, staff and volunteers, hearing from those who use our services and learning from each other. We are a comparatively small charity and whilst we will not ask you to get involved in the day to day running of our of the Charity we are looking for people who are prepared to spend time supporting some of the aspects of the Charity where you may have skills or experience, or a particular interest.

The responsibility.

The duties of a trustee are to:

• ensure that the Charity pursues its stated objects (purposes), as defined in its governing document, by developing and agreeing a long-term strategy and that it complies with its legal and regulatory obligations

• ensure that the Charity spends its funding carrying out its charitable objects for the benefit of the public

• ensure that the Charity defines its goals and evaluates performance against agreed targets

• safeguard the good name and values of the organisation

• ensure the effective and efficient administration of the Charity including having appropriate policies and procedures in place

• ensure the financial stability and sustainability of the Charity

• protect and manage the property of the Charity and ensure the proper investment of the Charity’s funds; and

• put in place and monitor arrangements for the appointment, supervision, support, appraisal and remuneration of the Charity’s Executive Director. 

In addition to the above statutory duties, trustees are expected to use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the board of trustees reach sound decisions. This may involve scrutinising board papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise. 

Person specification 

You will join a committed Board of Trustees to further the breadth of experience that we currently have.  Specific skills and experiences that we are looking for includes: 

 Expertise in fundraising, marketing or  events management, which may have been in the charitable sector but could also come from a commercial environment

 Experience of Home-Start’s work in supporting familities, which may as a family member who we have supported, a commissioner of our services, or a former staff member or volunteer

 A background in people management and development to support the ongoing development of our staff (8 part time) and our volunteers (60)

 Experience in legal, governance or business management In the commercial or charitable sector.

Strategic leadership

• Responsible to the Board, together with other committee members, for executing the powers delegated to the committee by the Board and set out in the terms of reference.
• Ensure that decisions taken by the committee are in RIBA’s best interests and that its regulatory, legal and ethical responsibilities are met.
• Ensure that the committee’s decision-making process is transparent and in accordance with good practice.

Working with others

• To develop a productive working relationship with the Chair of the Board of Trustees and the CEO, supporting acting as a critical friend.
• To maintain the committee’s effectiveness by developing productive working relationships with individual stakeholders and ensuring that, as a group, members have the right mix of skills to support the committee’s work.

The HOAP Committee Chair is responsible for providing effective leadership and we are looking for an individual to;

• Lead the HOAP Programme Committee.
• Exhibit project and programme management capabilies
• Ensure alignment with RIBA's strategic goals and ethical standards.
• Foster relationships with stakeholders to support fundraising and development.
• Oversee progress and provide guidance on key initiatives.

The HOAP Committee will provide support and appropriate challenges to the Steering Groups and support the teams in maintaining a network of relationships with key stakeholders.  They also play an active role in supporting our fundraising and development objectives.

Working with the Chair of the Board of Trustees and the CEO, the HOAP Programme Committee Chair will lead in setting strategic direction and monitoring the progress of the HOAP by ensuring that RIBA activities focus on advancing our charitable purposes and strategic goals

Glasgow Pet Collective

Glasgow Pet Collective is here for Glasgow’s pets and their people. We will advocate for, protect, and create Glasgow’s pet families, championing their wellbeing and maintaining the human-animal bond. We envision a Glasgow where every pet and their human companion thrive together in a nurturing and inclusive community, championing the joy of companionship and mutual care. We are looking for 2 dedicated Trustees to support GPC’s mission and help support humans and pets in a holistic, inclusive, and compassionate way.

The Role

GPC’s trustees will play a vital role in making sure the organisation achieves its core purposes of promoting the welfare and rehoming of companion animals, advancing animal welfare equity, relieving hardships faced by pets and their owners, lobbying for improved animal welfare legislation, fostering knowledge sharing, and building a supportive community for pet guardians in the Greater Glasgow Area. 

Trustees oversee the overall management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that GPC has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, they support and challenge the executive team to enable GPC to grow and thrive, and through this, fulfil our objectives and realise the organisation’s mission.

Board members have a collective responsibility. This means that trustees always act as a group. 

Duties

• Support and provide advice on GPC’s purpose, vision, goals and activities. 

• Approve operational strategies and policies, and monitor and evaluate their implementation.

• Oversee GPC’s financial plans and budgets and monitor and evaluate progress. 

• Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.

• Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored, and controlled effectively.

• Review and approve GPC’s financial statements.

• Provide support and challenge to GPC’s co-founders in the exercise of their delegated authority and affairs.

• Keep abreast of changes in GPC’s operating environment.

• Contribute to regular reviews of GPC’s own governance. Attend Board meetings monthly, adequately prepared to contribute to discussions.

• Use independent judgement, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect GPC’s interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and/or any third party interests.

• Contribute to the broader promotion of GPC’s objects, aims and reputation by applying your skills, expertise, knowledge and contacts.

• Actively promote and uphold principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion within the organisation. This includes confronting and addressing personal biases related to class, race, disability, or any other identifying characteristics. Trustees should advocate for and implement intersectional approaches in all aspects of the organisation's work, ensuring that all community members feel respected and valued.

As a small charity, there will be times when the trustees will need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings. This may involve scrutinising board papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, presenting externally, or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.

Who We Are Looking For

We are seeking individuals who bring energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to the role and who will enhance the diversity of thought on our board. Experience in pet welfare and animal advocacy, veterinary sciences, community groups, finance, or fundraising is highly valued but not essential. Lived experience is of great and equal value to professional and educational experience. To promote equity, diversity, and inclusion, we especially welcome applications from individuals within minoritized groups/communities, those from working class backgrounds, and those with physical impairments and/or neurodivergence.

Terms of Appointment

Terms of office

• Trustees are appointed for a 1 year term of office, renewal for unlimited further terms, at the discretion of membership.

• This is a voluntary position. Reasonable expenses (eg. travel costs or office supplies) will be reimbursed. Prior approval of such expenses shall be sought prior to purchase if at all possible.

Time commitment

• Attending 1 Board meetings each month plus the GPC annual general meeting. Board meetings will be held remotely unless a majority of the board wishes otherwise. AGM will be held remotely unless a majority of membership wishes otherwise.

• Attending annual strategy and/or training days as deemed desirable by a majority of the board.

2. Treasurer:

   • Oversee financial scrutiny and lead in approving annual accounts.
   • Experience in finance, accounting, and/or audit required.
   • Understand the importance of core funding for Black-led organizations.

3. Fundraising and Partnerships Trustee:

   • Shape and oversee our fundraising strategy.
   • Experience in building relationships with large organizations and major donors.
   • Make the case for change and expand our community of advocates.

4. Practice and Evaluation Trustee:

   • Drive the quality of our products and services.
   • Experience in academia, evaluation, learning, and/or teaching.
   • Set up and chair a new Practice Advisory Committee.

5. Experience of Teaching:

   • Bring real-world teaching experience.
   • Ensure the board understands the needs of educational professionals.
   • Voice of our primary participants – the teachers.
   • Experience in safeguarding is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

• Ensure Class 13 carries out activities for public benefit and complies with governing documents and charity law.
• Maintain proper financial control and pursue objectives in line with our theory of change.
• Monitor and manage risks and opportunities.
• Meet duties as an employer and respect the roles of staff and volunteers.
• Commit to quarterly trustee meetings and additional ad hoc responsibilities.

We are seeking to appoint two new Governors to the Local Governing Body of Pebsham Primary Academy. Whilst meetings can take place virtually, Governors will need to be available to visit the school at least three times during the year during school hours.

Who we are

Pebsham Primary Academy is a one form entry primary school in Bexhill. It joined TKAT, a Multi-Academy Trust, in January 2014. The TKAT Board of Trustees has appointed a Local Governing Board which is responsible for ensuring the Academy’s long term vision reflects the needs of its community beyond current post holders and in line with TKAT’s vision and values.

The role

​We, the Governors, are a diverse group of people from a range of backgrounds, including education, human resource management, retail work, legal work and finance. We aim to use our skills to support the school so that we attain our vision of a school where every child can shine. We are not paid, but can claim expenses for some activities.

We meet as a Local Governing Body, independent of the TKAT Board of Directors, but accountable to TKAT for everything we do, and our main functions are to set the strategic direction for the Academy and to hold its leadership to account.

We visit the school regularly to monitor its progress and we ask challenging questions to ensure that the school is meeting the needs of all the children and providing an education that will enthuse and inspire them. We regularly speak to children, parents and staff to find out their views.

Citizens Advice Birmingham is a local charity dedicated to serving the people of Birmingham by providing them with advice and information on a wide range of subjects. 

Citizens Advice Birmingham is seeking a financially qualified and/or experienced volunteer to join our Trustee Board as Honorary Treasurer.

What will you be doing?

The new Treasurer will join a committed board of trustees with many years’ experience. We are proud that we are a fit for purpose organisation with robust financial and performance management systems and, most importantly, a skilled and committed staff team.

As Treasurer you will work closely with our Finance Manager to monitor the financial administration of the organisation and report to the Trustee Board in compliance with the governing document and legal requirements. 

We are looking for a financial professional with some knowledge or experience of charity finances, fundraising, financial consequences and pension schemes who can explain complex financial information in an accessible way.

The role will provide a great deal of satisfaction, supporting a local charity that has an excellent reputation for delivering quality advice services to the community. The position of Honorary Treasurer will also provide the opportunity to enhance your skill set, utilise your expertise and share your knowledge.
