Working with the National Trust in an advisory non-executive capacity is an opportunity to contribute to the delivery of our strategy. In return for your time, knowledge and expertise, you’ll have the chance to work alongside members of our Board of Trustees and senior directors, supporting us to look after special places, forever, for everyone.
What you’ll be doing
Our Senior Management Remuneration Committee’s remit includes:
- The remuneration and terms of employment of the Director-General, the Executive team, and other senior directors.
- Overseeing senior management development and succession planning
- Maximising our leadership talent by helping us to attract, recruit, retain, and motivate the very best people to lead the
Trust forward and deliver our strategy.
The Committee consists of at least three members of the Board of Trustees, and one or two external, independent members. It meets formally at least twice a year although our independent members often share their experience or are asked to provide advice every couple of months.

The role is voluntary, but we reimburse expenses.
Who we’re looking for.
- Someone with a passion for the Trust and understanding of our core purpose and strategy. Our ethos is based on looking after and sharing special places, and as a committee member you’ll have a valuable part to play in how this happens.
- Someone with extensive HR experience either gained in large complex organisations, or as an HR consultant. You will have worked at a senior level in organisations, across different sectors. You’ll have a good understanding of total remuneration and job evaluation methodologies.
- Someone that will share extensive experience, encouraging the things we’re getting right, and supporting us to develop ways in which we might do it better. It’s about enhancing existing strategies and helping us develop new ones. And it’s about making a real, tangible difference to the organisation and its people.
- Knowledge of the charity sector would be an advantage but is not essential.
Time commitment
The appointment is for an initial term of three years from January 2026. The time commitment is approximately 2-4 days a year on Committee business, maybe slightly higher in the first year to allow for induction. Committee meetings are usually held in London, Swindon or virtually. You will be invited to attend the Committee’s next meeting in the autumn of 2025 as member-elect.

The HMSA is a small and dynamic charity that helps those living with hypermobility syndromes (and carers and families) to be independent and live well. We also provide education for professionals in social care, health, teaching and local authority employees. We have big plans to expand our offer to our members and professionals, as well as raise the profile of the charity and hypermobility syndromes. We are seeking to appoint up to 2 new trustees. Recognising that most people with these conditions present and are supported in primary care, we are particularly keen to recruit someone with a background in Primary Care to help us develop our plans. The Trustee role involves:

- Providing support/guidance to the other Trustees, the CEO as well as staff/volunteer team. This may include small group working in between Board meetings.
- You may also be asked to participate in sub-committees as required.

- Promoting the HMSA to primary care and other health and social care professionals or other relevant external audiences.

The Mlambe Project builds school infrastructure in Malawi Africa, one of the poorest countries in the world. We change lives through enabling access to education by transforming classrooms from "under a tree" (literally) into fully functional school blocks. Refugee Biryani & Bananas is looking for a Treasurer with a passion for financial management and accounting to join our Trustees Board to oversee the financial health of the charity and cement the financial literacy of the organisation at Board level. We are looking for someone with the skills, experience, energy and time to commit to our important work. Our Board is responsible for the governance of Refugee Biriyani & Bananas. The Finance Trustee will participate in all areas of our governance but take a special interest in the financial strategy and governance. They will use their sound financial skills and experience to support the Board’s understanding and interpretation and to ensure legislative compliance. Knowledge of UK wide midwifery provision would also be an advantage but not essential.

Home-Start Sittingbourne & Sheppey are a charity based in Sittingbourne. We recruit and train local volunteers. Once trained, volunteers are matched with a suitable local family. Volunteers help families with young children (at-least one under 5) by providing them with practical and emotional support within their own homes. Visits are made at the family’s homes so their confidentiality and individuality can be respected.
We are currently recruiting volunteer mentors from all walks of life. Do you have significant parenting experience? We need people with your knowledge to volunteer.

Home-Start Sittingbourne & Sheppey follow safeguarding guidelines, policies and procedures set down by Home-Start UK. Home Start Sittingbourne & Sheppey are committed to safeguarding all children, young people and vulnerable adults.
We have trained staff and trustees who use NSPCC guidelines for safer recruitment of staff, volunteers and board members to ensure that all individuals in the team are competent and safe to work with children, young people and vulnerable adults.
Volunteer mentor requirements / commitments.
· Volunteers must be local to Sittingbourne / Sheppey.
· Volunteers must have significant parenting experience. You do not need to be a parent yourself however you must have significant parenting experience. For example a social worker, midwife, health visitor, nursey worker, child minder etc.
· All volunteer mentors are required to attend a training course (course of preparation) prior to being matched with a family. This course is designed to prepare you to be able to meet the needs of the family you are matched with. Training will cover topics such as; your role as volunteer, values & attitudes, equity & diversity, confidentiality and safeguarding. Training can either be completed face-to-face or online as an e-learning course with 8 hours of face to face training with the manager.
· You will be required to provide two references and have an enhanced DBS check.
· Volunteers are required to visit their matched family at least once a week (usually 2 hours).
· Volunteer mentors support families in a way that suits their needs; this may include practical tasks such as getting out of the house, getting to and from appointments, or helping with organisation. Support could also include offering parenting guidance/advice, sharing experiences and/or supporting parents through emotional struggles.
· Volunteers need to attend supervision meetings (usually every 4-6 weeks) with the manager.
· Volunteers must read, sign and understand the Home-Start Safeguarding/Child Protection Code of Conduct, demonstrating and ensuring your commitment to your safeguarding responsibilities as a volunteer mentor.
· Volunteers must understand that support provided to families is completely confidential.
Skills required.
Experience of being a parent or carer is vital. This is important as your knowledge can provide a local family with the vital support they need.
· Are a supportive, understanding, warm, caring, friendly and accepting individual with a non-judgmental attitude.
· Can accept a parent for who they are.
· Understand the importance of confidentiality.
· Must have the ability to see strengths in others and help parents build upon theirs.

Chair of Trustees – Role Description
The Chair leads the board, ensuring that it governs the charity effectively, in service of the charity’s vision and mission. The Chair leads in an inclusive way, supporting the board to work together well, and providing support and challenge to the Service Manager. The Chair is also an ambassador for the charity.
Chair role
- Provide strategic leadership to the charity and the Board, ensuring that Age Concern Todmorden achieves its mission.
- Work in partnership with the Service Manager and team to achieve our mission.
- Lead the board in ensuring that it fulfils its responsibilities for the governance of the organisation.
- Optimise the relationship between the board and Age Concern Todmorden’s staff and volunteers.
- Plan and chair the board meetings and the AGM, with others as appropriate.
- Act as a spokesperson and figurehead for Age Concern Todmorden
What we are looking for
Essential
- Experience of being a trustee. You do not need to have been a Chair before.
- A keen sense of strategic purpose.
- An inclusive leadership style: able to inspire and support everyone to participate on an equal footing.
- The ability to listen and engage effectively. You are comfortable with challenge and debate and are able to encourage that in others whilst fostering a collaborative board environment.
- Advocate - be able and willing to champion Age Concern Todmorden’s work through personal networks, social media, and other channels.
- A commitment to equity, accessibility, diversity and inclusion.
- Be responsive. As a small charity, things sometimes ‘come up’ that require the Chair to advise, support or give consent to. It is very helpful to have a Chair who is available and responsive.

- Support and provide advice on Age Concern Todmorden’s purpose, vision, goals and activities.
- Approve operational strategies and policies, and monitor and evaluate their implementation.
- Oversee Age Concern Todmorden’s financial plans and budgets and monitor and evaluate progress.
- Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.
- Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively.
- Review and approve Age Concern Todmorden’s financial statements.
- Provide support and challenge to Age Concern Todmorden’s Service Manager in the exercise of their delegated authority and affairs.
- Keep abreast of changes in Age Concern Todmorden’s operating environment.
- Contribute to regular reviews of Age Concern Todmorden’s own governance.
- Attend Board meetings, adequately prepared to contribute to discussions.
- Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect Age Concern Todmorden’s interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and/or any third party interests.
- Contribute to the broader promotion of Age Concern Todmorden’s objects, aims and reputation by applying your skills, expertise, knowledge and contacts.

- This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
Time commitment (Estimated at least one day per month)
- Attending Board meetings, meeting with the Service Manager with flexibility to respond swiftly to the occasional ad hoc issue.
