Job description

Be Part of Preserving History: Transcribe Veteran Voices for the Legasee Archive

Volunteer from home and make a lasting difference by helping to make the personal stories of veterans accessible to all.

About Legasee Educational Trust

Legasee is a charity dedicated to preserving the experiences of British military veterans through recorded interviews. These stories capture the rich and diverse histories of individuals who have shaped significant events. By transcribing these interviews, you’ll help us create a fully searchable archive that empowers schools, universities, researchers, and the public to connect with these incredible narratives.

The Role: Transcription Volunteer

Your main responsibility will be to transcribe audio or video interviews into text. This ensures the interviews are fully accessible to everyone, including those who are deaf or hard of hearing, and makes the archive searchable for specific information. Accuracy, attention to detail, and respect for the interviewees’ words are vital.

You’ll be part of a friendly and supportive volunteer team, working remotely and at times that suit you. This role is perfect for anyone with strong listening and typing skills who is passionate about preserving history.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Transcribing recorded interviews with veterans accurately and sensitively.
  • Formatting transcripts according to Legasee’s guidelines.
  • Meeting deadlines for assigned transcription tasks.
  • Communicating with the volunteer coordinator for support and feedback.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Excellent listening and typing skills.
  • Strong command of the English language.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
  • The ability to work independently and manage your time effectively.
  • Respect and sensitivity to the veterans’ stories.

Benefits of Volunteering with Legasee:

  • Make a Difference: Your work will help preserve veterans’ stories for future generations and enhance access to the archive for educational and research purposes.
  • Learn New Skills: Gain valuable experience in transcription, history, and archival work.
  • Flexible Working: Volunteer from anywhere, at times that fit your schedule.

Commitment and Support:

We ask for a commitment of approximately 4 hours per week, although we are happy to fit in around your other commitments. You’ll receive full guidance and support, including a comprehensive transcription guide and access to our volunteer coordinator.

Join us in preserving the voices of history—your contribution will truly make a difference.
