About the Role

KHULA Education is seeking an experienced and dynamic fundraising leader to lead KHULA’s fundraising and communication efforts in the UK and South Africa. The postholder will join us at an exciting time and help us to continue our growth trajectory which has seen our annual budget increase from £250,000 to £1 million in the past several years. Supported by the South Africa based CEO, and working closely with the UK Board of Trustees, the postholder will be joined by a new Fundraising Officer who you will line manage.

We’re looking for an entrepreneurial individual with strategic vision who will play an active part in developing KHULA’s future fundraising strategy. 70% of the role is focused on fundraising directly for our work, 30% on managing KHULA’s communications including donor newsletters and social media content (this may evolve with the recruitment of an Officer).

Key Responsibilities

• Steward, retain and grow the support of our existing donor portfolio: KHULA has an existing portfolio of donors including trusts, foundations, corporates, major donors, individual and regular givers, the majority of whom are based in the UK or South Africa. The post holder is responsible for managing these relationships, including bespoke reporting for trusts and major donors, leading donor meetings and involving our Board and CEO as appropriate.
• Donor prospecting and new business: researching and generating new donor leads as well as acting on opportunities provided by our Board and others, converting prospects into supporters of our programmes.
• ​​External communications: creating our quarterly e-newsletter to a database of ~2,000 supporters, managing our social media channels and the Annual Report, in addition to other ad hoc external communications.
• Fundraising innovation: leading on innovation in our fundraising approach, including creative campaigns to increase donations/recruit lapsed donors, developing products and offerings whilst considering cost effectiveness and ROI. Of particular interest is how to harness the giving potential of guests who are exposed to KHULA Education’s work when they visit Fugitives’ Drift Lodge in Rorke’s Drift.
• Financial management and admin: maintaining our donor database, working with the CEO to prepare our annual budget and fundraising forecasts.

Person Specification

Ideally you’ll have held a role with a similar scope of responsibilities around fundraising and communications, however you don’t need to have held a director level role before. Experience in a smaller charity and team is beneficial as you’ll need to be comfortable with both the strategic development side and inputting into wider planning, as well as being a leader who is willing to role up your sleeves and ‘do’.

We are particularly interested to hear from candidates who demonstrate most/all of the following attributes:

• A proven track record of personally delivering income of at least £1 million per year, including new business
• Experience in a fundraising leadership role and confidence in working alongside and advising at board level
• Experience in successfully fundraising from trusts, foundations, major donors and corporates, with experience in other areas (events, legacies etc.) also welcome
• Excellent proposal and donor communication writing skills (written samples of previous work will be requested)
• Self-motivated and able to work autonomously with a largely virtual team
• Comfortable acting in the capacity of charity ambassador, establishing new relationships and identifying new funding opportunities
• Ability to travel to occasional donor and board meetings (x3 per year), in/around London and annual trip to South Africa for 1-2 weeks.

We are recruiting a Part Time Support Worker for our Look Ahead refuge to support and empower women to move on successfully with their lives.

The service supports 15 women with/out children in self contained units. The aim of the service is to support women to rebuild their lives following a period of abuse, preparing them to move on within a 6-month period to an accommodation type of their choice either in or out of borough.

We are looking to recruit a part time, enthusiastic and energetic customer focused support worker to join our service and dynamic team. Support workers deliver support along side the in house Independent Domestic Violence Advisor (IDVA) to address the safety of victims, survivors at high risk of harm and to equip women with the tools to move on within the allocated period.

The role requires some flexibility as the post holder will work shifts on 20 hours shared rota which includes weekend's shifts and out of hours on call rota.

What you'll do:

Undertake key-working responsibilities for a caseload assigned by the service Manager

To empower and support women and children in the refuge to keep safe and move on successfully with their lives

Complete DASH Risk Assessments, conduct comprehensive and regular customer risk assessments to ensure their safety and wellbeing

Create support/action plans for providing appropriate services based on the assessment and reflecting the services and resources available

Provide practical assistance to support customers to work towards the goals in their support plan (e.g. supporting benefits applications, attending medical appointments and appointments with external agencies

Develop and maintain links with all key agencies and service providers in the local community

Liaise with external agencies such as the Police, MARAC, Social Services and GPs

Help customers to integrate into their local area and access local educational, social, wellbeing and community activities, resources and opportunities

Monitor rent account, encourage and enable tenants to pay their rent and to ensure that rent accounts are managed effectively in conjunction with the Housing Management team

Manage customer referrals, completing Dash Risk Assessments and obtaining and maintaining all relevant paperwork

Main duties and responsibilities

1. Develop the advocacy team’s expertise in all of the ways our evidence can be used to effect change, including policy work both with the Home Office and NHS England who commission healthcare in immigration detention, parliamentary work, media work, and to contribute to strategic litigation, and how and when they interrelate.
2. Understand and keep updated on what is happening with immigration detention policy, including matters that influence it, such as the literature on health issues of detainees, key legal judgements, inquests, reports by official monitors and parliamentary committees, responses to parliamentary questions, parliamentary debates, research produced by other organisations, and information that you glean from FOI requests.
3. Keep abreast of the wider political context that may influence immigration and detention policy.
4. Represent Medical Justice at external meetings and events.
   - Participate in Home Office, NHS England and monitoring bodies’ stakeholder forums.
   - Participate in formal and informal ad-hoc NGO groupings.
5. Work both reactively and pro-actively, identify opportunities for securing change and prioritise work according to its strategic importance as well as ‘return on investment’.
6. Work with the Director and the Head of Casework to ensure ;
7. Further develop Medical Justice’s Strategy and ensure that strategic objectives across the organisation are impactful, current and coherent.
   - Developments that affect detention policy are shared within Medical Justice.
   - Issues experienced in our casework are documented and used in our advocacy work.
   - Our material is robust so that we maintain credibility as an organisation which is vital for our advocacy work as well as for the use of our medico-legal reports in clients’ individual legal cases.
   - Develop the monitoring and evaluation framework for our advocacy work.
8. Facilitate the meaningful involvement of people with lived experience of detention Medical Justice advocacy work, including in its design and development.
9. Line-manage the Parliamentary & Research Analyst and the Researcher, including providing support in terms of personal development/training and well-being. There will also be line-managing responsibilities for some periods of an individual on the Casework Trainee programme for people with lived experience, once it is introduced.

Research / line-management of the Researcher

1. Consulting colleagues, other NGOs and lawyers to identify research projects that draw on medical evidence from our casework that would have the most impact, including carrying out research for strategic litigation and supporting such litigation.
2. Collaborate with other organisations as appropriate.
3. Lead the team in conducting research and provide periodic feedback of policy implications regarding the emerging findings to others within the organisation for consideration.
4. Lead the team in the producing analysis of research and audits of our MLRs, writing up into required formats, including research reports, text for inclusion in policy work, submissions, witness statements, briefing papers for parliamentarians, and media articles. 
5. Together with colleagues, offer suitable material for peer review publication and contribute where appropriate to research carried out by medical professional bodies and others.
6. Contribute to the further development of the Medical Justice datasystem and its functionality.

Policy work

1. Carry out policy work with the Home Office, NHS England and their contractors – this may include responding to consultations, and challenging issues proactively.
2. Build relationships with the Home Office, NHS England, and monitoring bodies – make sure Medical Justice is included in all relevant consultations and alert others if they have been missed out.
3. Collaborate as much as is sensible with other organisations to get the best outcomes for people in detention.

Parliamentary work / line-management of the Parliamentary & Research Analyst

1. Oversee our work as the secretariat for the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Immigration Detention, raising awareness of immigration detention amongst parliamentarians and priming them to take action. Work to ensure the APPG brings together parliamentarians with experts, NGOs, lawyers and people with lived experience to amplify our collective impact.
2. Oversee the briefing of parliamentarians for challenging unjust policies, asking parliamentary questions, holding parliamentary debates, opposing parliamentary approval of harmful policy amendments, and assisting parliamentarians in tabling amendments to relevant Bills.
3. Oversee submissions parliamentary committees to inquires they hold as well as the briefing of committee members and clerks.

 Galvanise Medical professional organisations

1. Work with Royal Colleges, the British Medical Association and others to galvanise their communities, encouraging helpful evidence from them, and organising events with them.

Media

1. Work both with the Director and on your own to create mainstream and social media opportunities to promote the work of Medical Justice and the needed content.

 

General

• Provide reports for staff and/or trustees as requested.
• Respect and comply in full with Medical Justice patients’ confidentiality requirements and contribute to developing our own policy in this area.
• To work flexibly as a member of a team and the organisation and undertake other reasonable duties and responsibilities at the request of the Director.

About us

Crisis is the national charity for people experiencing homelessness. We know that homelessness is not inevitable. We know that together we can end it. 

We are now recruiting the team that will deliver Crisis at Christmas 2024. This unique project mobilises a huge volunteering effort to provide warmth, companionship and vital services in temporary centres across London to people facing homelessness.

This is a varied role including processing volunteer applications, creating comms materials, managing, and communicating schedules, organising training, organising and setting up kit, ensuring our teams of specialists have the equipment and materials they need and helping out in our centres.

The role

This is an exciting, fast-paced, full-time role that works to ensure effective financial oversight and management of Unlimit Health and builds the financial management capacity of partners, and within the organisation.

The role reports to the Director of Finance and Operations, and at times this role will deputise for the Director of Finance and Operations.

You will hold a professional accountancy qualification and have substantial financial management experience in an international development environment. The role is fast-paced and complex, and the ideal candidate will need to have presence and ability to effectively manage complex stakeholder needs.

Funded by London Borough of Waltham Forest, the project seeks to support the most vulnerable families in the borough, working closely in partnership with the Early Help team.

The role will be supporting families, mainly at local Children and Family Centres across the borough, in relation to stabilising their finances which will mainly involve debt and benefit issues and support with financial capability. 

The post holder will support clients to reduce and/or better manage personal debt and maximise benefit entitlement. They will deliver services in a variety of ways including one to one, drop in and by appointment at outreach in Waltham Forest. All channels will be utilised to deliver services and an assessment will be made of the level of support required including providing casework support.

What you'll do:

Responsible for key-working a caseload assigned by the Management

Undertake initial and continuous assessment of needs and potential risks and agree levels of support and actions to professional standards

Co-develop a positive behaviour support plan with the individual that identifies triggers and actions required to enable positive risk taking through reduced risks

Support customers to engage with agreed support programme

Support customers to claim and receive eligible benefits, deal with relevant agencies to develop life skills, budgeting, financial literacy, and managing finances effectively

Encourage tenants to pay their rent and to ensure that rent accounts are managed effectively

Motivate individuals to prepare and cook healthy meals safely, going shopping and offering guidance on buying balanced nutritious food

Enable customers to improve their skills to manage their day-to-day activities such a making telephone calls, dealing with correspondence, attending appointments and form filling

Support customers to access other services including CMHT, substance misuse agencies and/or work in partnership with other agencies as part of the support planning process

Develop and maintain links with key agencies and service providers in the local community

Lead on an area of specialism (e.g. ETE, health and wellbeing) and build partnerships and develop internal and external opportunities for service-users in this area

Successful candidates will have:

An understanding of the issues facing young people

Action again Medical Accidents (AvMA) is seeking a Director of Fundraising, Marketing and Communications to drive the diversification of their income streams, enhance their public profile, and develop robust marketing and communications strategies to support their mission of preventing medical accidents and supporting affected individuals.

This is a brand new role and an opportunity to shape and develop not just the role itself, but the team and the full suite of strategic objectives and activities to help support AvMA’s mission, vison and values.

You will play a pivotal role in helping AvMA to design plans to deliver additional income through a combination of fundraising, marketing and communications efforts that together widen their reach, empower more people and deliver their strategic aims.

About you:

With a demonstrable track record in developing multi faceted fundraising strategies and experience in marketing and communications, you’ll bring the skills needed to successfully deliver and establish a range of fundraising activities. As this is a new role, some areas of work may have not been established yet and so you’ll use your creative and solution focused mindset to generate the ideas and bring them to life, leading and motivating others as you go. 

As a strong storyteller you’ll use your skills to help AvMA raise its profile, create a better clarity of voice and widen its reach - connecting with new communities and audiences in order to increase the potential of AvMA’s impact and make a difference to more people lives.

You’ll be comfortable working autonomously and acting as the lead subject matter expert for all things fundraising, marketing and communications, taking a blank canvas, spotting opportunity, and delivering success for AvMA and its beneficiaries. You will also have overall responsibility for a budget to help you to develop what is needed, such as people, resources or infrastructure - so budget management experience is essential too.

Experience in a smaller charity and team is beneficial as you’ll need to be comfortable with both the strategic development side and inputting into wider planning, as well as being a leader who is willing to role up your sleeves and ‘do’. 

Ideally you’ll have held a role with a similar scope of responsibilities around fundraising, marketing and communications, as well as people management, however you don’t need to have held a director level role before. This is likely to be your next step and provides a very tantalising opportunity to develop, design and deliver a new function and really make it your own!

What we can offer you:

 

Salary: Circa £75,240 - £79,302 per annum, negotiable dependant on experience.

Location: Remote role. Although staff predominantly work from home, we place huge value on working as a team and supporting each other.There is an expectation that AvMA staff will get together in person at least three times a year at the office, currently in Croydon; the Staff Days are well structured, collegiate and help the organisation to maintain the emphasis on playing as a team.

Hours of work: You will be contracted hours are 35 hours per week (full time) 

Pension: AvMA also offer a stakeholder pension where the charity will provide a 5% contribution based on qualifying earnings if the employee pays in at least 3%.

Holiday: 25 days a year (full time), plus bank holidays. An additional day’s leave is acquired for each year of service up to five days. In addition, the office closes over the Christmas break for 3 days, for which annual leave does not have to be taken.

• Record and process additions, capitalisations, revaluations, and disposals of fixed assets in a timely fashion.
• Monitor the progress of assets under construction, ensuring that assets are correctly capitalised when construction is completed, and appropriate depreciation is charged.
• Maintain the fixed assets register and record revaluations, impairments and indexations.
• Review capital transactions and ensure that they are allocated appropriately, identify misclassified capital/resource spend and take appropriate corrective action.
• Completing monthly reconciliations of the bank and other balance sheet items.
• Preparing and entering journals into the system.
• Assist with obtaining information for auditors and their queries.

The successful candidate will have:

• Started working towards a CCAB or AAT qualification, or be qualified by experience.
• A demonstrable understanding and application of sound principles of financial accounting, especially double entry bookkeeping.
• Ideally, previous experience of UK government accounting and regulatory requirements.
• Ability to work to deadlines, prioritise tasks and keep others updated.
• Evidence of being able to work as part of a team and demonstrate flexibility in working towards team objectives.
• Ideally, experience of fixed asset accounting.
