Purpose of the Job 

Hammersmith and Fulham, Ealing and Hounslow Mind run an innovative crisis prevention service designed as a place for children and young people at risk of mental health crises to de-escalate and have access to a skilled staff team to support them. The Circle is open out of hours (3pm-11pm or 12pm-8pm weekends and holidays), 365 days a year, and has been designed to reduce the need for young people to attend A&E. Co-designed by young people, it is a friendly and accessible space.The mental health adviser role is key to the support that children and young people will receive on site, and you will have the opportunity to work with 5-18 year olds, as well as providing signposting and support to parents/carers and other agencies.

This Mental Health Adviser role would suit an experienced Mental Health Youth Worker, CAMHS support worker, Youth Counsellor, Child Wellbeing Practitioner, Emotional Wellbeing Practitioner, an Assistant Psychologist with some training in MH interventions like CBT,  or other roles that have given you experience and skills in  working with Children and Young People presenting with difficulties related to their Mental Health.

Key Responsbilities

• Work as part of a team dedicated to providing support to children and young people who are at risk of mental health crisis, or may otherwise attend A&E.
• Offer one to one support via drop in or appointments, and be child-centred in that support.
• Work alongside children and young people, their parents/carers and families in increasing self-management of presenting difficulties.
• Signpost anyone accessing the service to appropriate and local on-going support; and build up your knowledge and networks of such support.
• Understand and implement safeguarding procedures, and be familiar with safeguarding law, and how it applies to our work.
• Follow risk procedures, be familiar with completing risk assessments, and refer to on-call or senior managers appropriately.

You will have:

• A minimum of two years’ experience of supporting children and/young people in a mental health service or similar role in a paid or volunteer capacity, in a 1:1 and group setting
• An ability to form supportive relationships with families, and tailor support to individual need.
• A child-centred approach to work.
• Working knowledge of child and adult safeguarding.
• Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of equality and diversity issues and the ability to integrate into your work.

This role will require some attendance at our Community Meals projects, which would include some evening and weekend work. About this key role

• A flexible and collaborative approach, a positive attitude, emotional resilience, confidence when speaking in front of a group and a flair for planning sessions using a variety of resources.

About the Role

Service Delivery

• Work with the Operational Services Manager to review, design and implement changes to service delivery and working models, ensuring the service meets the needs of the local community, and identify relevant funding opportunities.

About the role

Alongside the Service Manager, you are responsible and accountable for monitoring, maintaining and providing the highest standards of clinical and personal support and service delivery, while promoting independence and choice to the people supported in the service. You will produce support and risk management plans based on your assessments, promoting inter-agency collaboration in the assessment and planning process, and develop and maintain relationships with partner agencies.  We will also count on you to deliver a holistic support service, working solo or with colleagues as the situation dictates, providing a practical service that will include social and housing support, accompanying to appointments, benefits work, debt advice, liaising with utilities, appearing in court, and cleaning. 

What we are looking for 

You will be passionate about support and uplifting Children and Young people and want to make a difference within the community for the betterment of Children and Young People. You’ll also have an understanding of the challenges that are faced by some CYP and be relatable. You’ll need:

• Personal experience of the criminal justice system, lived experience of the issues facing this client group and/or experience of working with ‘high risk’, vulnerable children, young people and/or families 
• Substantial experience of providing support, advice and advocacy 
• Substantial experience of supporting CYP and assessing the needs of children and young people who at risk of significant harm  
• An understanding of how trauma impacts on a young person and what that can look like 
• A relevant qualification to a good standard or be working towards one 
• A knowledge of relevant services for young people and their families in the service provision area 
• Excellent interpersonal, relationship-building and communication skills, both verbal and written.

What will you be doing?

As a Service Manager at Hft, you’ll be supporting adults with learning disabilities to live the best life possible. You will be a role model to others through demonstrating excellent support to those we support and you will help the Regional Service Managers to coach, support and manage staff teams effectively. You will be responsible for nurturing and inspiring those coming to work for Hft to help ensure we have the best staff teams offering great support services. The purpose of the role is to assist the Regional Service Manager by holding delegated responsibility in key areas of the day-to-day running of the registered service. As a Specialist Caseworker, you will provide peer supervisory support to the team within the wider hospital-based services, which includes deputising for the Senior Caseworker when required, and support the Data Coordinator and Senior Caseworker with the collation of information and data for project monitoring purposes.  You will develop and maintain an up-to-date and accurate resource of suitable onward referrals and develop and maintain strong relationships with both clinicians and hospital staff and with other services in the hospital, i.e CAMHS, IDVA, COMPASS.

We will count on you to identify and assess young victims of violence, producing support and risk management plans based on these assessments, and to provide support, advice and advocacy for children, young people and their families as they plan to be discharged from hospital back into the community.  You will also deliver a holistic support service, working solo or with colleagues as the situation dictates, which will see you provide practical help such as social and housing support, accompanying to appointments, ETE options, benefits work, debt advice, and appearing in court.

• Personal experience of the criminal justice system, lived experience of the issues facing this client group and/or experience of working with ‘high risk’, vulnerable children
• Experience of providing support, advice and advocacy
• Substantial experience of assessing the needs of young people at risk of significant harm

About the Service User Network (SUN)

The SUN is an open access model of community-based facilitated group peer support for people experiencing complex emotional needs associated with complex trauma and/or a diagnosis of ‘personality disorder’. The SUN aims to help people develop effective ways of coping, reduce emergencies and improve access to appropriate services.

Those accessing the SUN may or may not have a formal diagnosis of personality disorder. Group members will have experienced longstanding emotional difficulties, isolation and may demonstrate patterns of behaviour that may not be helpful in the longer term.

About the Role

Fundamental to creating empowerment and engagement in the SUN Project is the therapeutic community principle, that the effectiveness of the service depends upon engaging group members in the task of running, delivery, development and evaluation of the service. The utilisation of SUN members’ own resources and expertise is integral to the SUN model of peer support.

SUN Facilitators will have their own lived experience of complex emotional needs associated with a diagnosis of ‘personality disorder’ and will be able to demonstrate their recovery journey. They will work closely with mental health practitioners from ELFT (East London NHS Foundation Trust) to deliver regular Service User Network (SUN) groups in different community-based locations in Bedford, Central Bedfordshire or Luton. Full training in the SUN model, and weekly supervision by a Psychotherapist / Psychologist, will be provided for all team members.

Facilitators will work to develop and support the therapeutic community principle of the SUN model and the effectiveness of the service through engaging group members in the task of running, delivery, development, and evaluation of the service. The utilisation of SUN members’ own resources and expertise is integral to the model of peer support upon which the SUN groups are based.

SUN facilitators will have regular supervision and support in this role along with appropriate training.

St Giles Trust and the West Midlands Domestic Abuse Victim Support Service Consortium are partnering to provide DA offender intervention and tailored DA victim support. Our successful candidate will engage with offenders in police custody once they have been identified as being perpetrators of domestic abuse and will have responsibility to build positive relationships and work directly with the offender in custody to promote positive change, build resilience, reduce risks, and prevent further harm through DA offending.

You will produce DA offender risk management plans based on assessments and ensure that the DA perpetrator understands the consequences of their DA offending behaviour and works towards accepting responsibility for their actions and to positively change their behaviour.  We will also count on you to always promote and protect the safety of the victim(s) and families and to collaborate closely with all key stakeholders to ensure that increases in risk of harm are escalated rapidly and a multi-agency plan is in place. Delivering a holistic support service as the situation dictates is also a key element of the role.

What we are looking for:

• Several years of professional experience of similar role
• Experience of completing risk assessments and safeguarding victims, children, and families 
• Experience of providing support, advice and advocacy and the ability to assess clients’ needs
