We have call taker training sessions that run over five sessions and is done remotely connecting you via a Microsoft Teams link.
You would need to be able to attend all five sessions from one of these remote training groups and be available on four occasions to listen into calls, this can be organised remotely.

About us
We are a charity that matches people who need free legal help with barristers who are willing to donate their time and expertise for those who cannot obtain legal aid and cannot afford to pay.
We are the only pro bono charity to provide access to legal assistance in all areas of law, in all courts and tribunals across England and Wales.
We have been facilitating free legal help since 1996 and have grown into a thriving organisation working with almost 4,500 volunteer barristers. Our team comprises 23 dedicated casework, communications and administrative staff, as well as a committed team of student casework volunteers who work with us daily. We have 13 trustees on our Board which is chaired by Sharif A Shivji KC.
About Bar in the Community
Bar in the Community (BIC) is a volunteering initiative overseen by Advocate that was set up in 2000 with the aim of matching barristers volunteering their time with management committee positions of local voluntary organisations. Since then, BIC has expanded the breadth of volunteering it seeks to facilitate and now works to find barristers and chambers professionals to fill a variety of voluntary roles across a range of local and national organisations.
The initiative advertises roles from a range of charities working towards many different causes beyond the Bar. Prospective volunteers can become trustees, governors, mentors, workshop facilitators, resource creators and much more. The scheme has opportunities available for every skill set and every level, so these benefits can be found whether volunteers are just starting out in their career, looking to progress to a more senior level, or even retired.
Bar in the Community is a powerful tool for charities who are in need of support from those with a legal background, as well as for barristers and chambers professionals who are keen to give back to the community and gain skills or experience that will positively impact their career.
“I simply don’t think I would be where I am without the experiences I have gained from volunteering. Professionally, board-level volunteering has helped me to build my network, learn from industry greats, test my leadership style, make mistakes and circulate my ideas about how organisations and movements should run.”
Abiodun Olatokun, Trainee Barrister at Matrix Chambers
"Volunteers from the legal world have numerous skills and abilities which can be applied outside the context of the law. There are real benefits to the public from that shared expertise. Many of us entered the law with the aim of making our society a better place to be. It is worth remembering that you can achieve that goal outside the law too."
Sharif Asim Shivji KC, Chair of Advocate
About the role
We are looking for two people to join the recently created management committee of BIC at a key stage in our development as we look to further expand the initiative, with a particular focus on engaging more charities and more volunteers.
We want to recruit two candidates with a commitment to volunteering and the work of BIC. We are looking for people with the following background:
1. Marketing and engagement: At present, the most important goals for Bar in the Community are to engage charities to ensure a steady stream of interesting opportunities and to engage volunteers to take on these opportunities. It is therefore essential for the management committee to be able to advise on how to promote opportunities and engage people and organisations.
2. Expertise in volunteering: As one of our key focuses is to engage the Bar in volunteering through BIC we are eager to recruit someone with previous experience working with volunteers and successfully recruiting for volunteer vacancies.
We recognise the need to ensure that Equality Diversity and Inclusion is reflected in all aspects of Advocate’s work including our management roles. We appreciate the additional perspectives diversity brings adds depth and understanding to our work. To that end, we strongly encourage applications from people from ethnic minority backgrounds or other underrepresented backgrounds.
Applicants do not need previous management committee experience to undertake this role and we welcome applications from those with all levels of experience.
Time commitment and requirements of the role
Members would attend management committee meetings every three months. These meetings would last approximately an hour and time should also be factored in ahead of the meeting to read the papers. We anticipate these meetings being online. We are eager to recruit people who are willing to actively participate in discussions.
We are looking for candidates with a willingness to commit the necessary time and effort and to apply your experience and expertise to support the Manager of BIC. Those applying should understand the responsibilities of being part of a management committee.
Remuneration
The roles are unpaid positions, however reasonable out of pocket expenses may be reimbursed, particularly to assist with travel costs or caring responsibilities.
The deadline for applications is Sunday the 13th of October. Interviews will be held across the weeks of the 21st and 28th of October.
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.

We are ShelterBox.
ShelterBox is made up of people who believe in shelter as a human right – that shelter from the chaos of disaster and conflict is vital. No ifs. No buts. We work to change this by providing emergency shelter and essential items after disaster.
We don’t believe that one size fits all. We work hard to understand the impact of each emergency and the need this creates within individual communities.
ShelterBox was founded by volunteers over 20 years ago and volunteers still play a vital role in the work we do. Last year our volunteer ShelterBox Ambassadors in the UK engaged with over 30,000 people, raising awareness and funds to support us in this vital work.
Become a ShelterBox Ambassador and join a network of humanitarians across the globe who want to see that no one is without shelter.
ShelterBox is committed to working towards a future where no one goes without shelter, but we have our work cut out for us. In 2022, over 113 million people were displaced by conflict and disaster. Some projections suggest that this figure will grow to 200 million within 10 years.
In this Ambassador role, you will be amplifying the voices of the people affected by disaster and conflict, by sharing their stories. You will also be raising awareness and understanding of the disaster relief work we do. The ripple effect of your talks will lead to individuals fundraising and increase communities’ engagement with ShelterBox. Without people like you, we would not have the capacity to reach new audiences or to spread these important stories.
Who are you?
- Passionate, caring, motivated, wanting to make a difference.
What could you do?
- Give talks, attend events, organise activities, support with our campaigns.
What impact will you have?
- Raise funds, raise awareness, recruit other ambassadors.
What will you get in return?
- Meet like-minded people, receive training and support, gain experience and satisfaction, a flexible role to suit you.
Want to know more?
· You will need to be self-sufficient, as this is primarily a lone working role. However, there will be opportunities to connect with other volunteers and ShelterBox throughout the year.
· We’ll never pressure you into taking on a talk or activity. All we ask is that volunteers take part in 8 activities throughout the year.
· You may need to be able to drive or use public transport but it is not essential. You could give talks online instead on platforms such as Teams and/or Zoom.
· You can make the role your own, by adapting talks and creating your own opportunities. We can support you if you have an idea how to use your network of contacts or local knowledge to create your own local fundraising event.
· We are committed to creating a culture in which equity, diversity and inclusion are championed and valued across our international organisation and in all our work, and the personal responsibilities we are all expected to uphold as part of our roles here.
What to expect from us.
· Online training (both onboarding and ongoing opportunities).
· A t-shirt, name-badge, and other materials.
· Access to our Volunteer Resource page where you’ll find digital guides, case studies of people we have helped, resources for your chosen activity (including pre-prepared PowerPoint presentations and notes for Speakers).
· Access to and training in using our online portal to manage your diary and sign up for talks and events in your community.
· Buddying and shadowing opportunities with other volunteers.
· Support and guidance from a dedicated and passionate team who believe in the importance of volunteers.
· Fortnightly newsletters with the most up-to-date information.
Next steps.
We ask everyone to complete an application form, which is followed up with an informal interview (by phone/Zoom/Teams). If you and I both feel it’s a suitable role for you, we will take up references and then organise an induction for you.
Thank you for your interest in joining the ShelterBox family.

About the RSPCA
Founded in 1824 we have been saving animals for 200 years and are proud to be the oldest animal welfare charity around. It has always been our vision to live in a world where all animals are respected and treated with compassion, so our volunteers and employees work tirelessly to ensure that all animals can live free from pain and suffering.
Through our numerous campaigns, we seek to raise standards of care and awareness of issues, affecting animals today. We rely heavily on our volunteers and Trustees who play a significant role in enabling us to carry out this important welfare work every day!
The RSPCA Darlington & District Branch
The RSPCA Darlington & District Branch is one of the branches of RSPCA but we are also a separately registered charity looking after animals in our local area. Much of the animal welfare work of RSPCA is carried out through local branches, which are run by volunteers and trustees who have the support of the Nation Society of the RSPCA.
The main activities of our branch are on our Facebook page RSPCA Darlington & District Branch and on our website.
What we are looking for in a Volunteer
Above all, we are looking for someone who is committed to the RSPCA’s charitable objectives and shares our passion for animal welfare and the work the Branch carries out.
Specific skills such as finance, fundraising, project management, business experience, awareness of employment and charity legislation can be useful.
You will need to be able to work with people and have good interpersonal skills. You do not need to be an expert, although commitment, common sense and the ability to be objective are vital.
Our voluntary roles are subject to an informal interview and trial period. We will ask you to provide contact details for two referees, and dependent on the position, you may need to sign an agreement and undergo specific training before starting the role.
We’ll look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you.
