Parkinson's UK local groups offer friendship, support, and numerous activities for people affected by Parkinson's.

In Winchester, the group is a core part of the local Parkinson's community. As a committee volunteer you'll help connect people to the group, whilst making sure existing members stay up to date with the activities provided. You could have a hand in arranging activities too, whether it's seated yoga, or a chance for friends and family of those living with Parkinson's to meet - and all activities are open to you too.

You'll build existing connections, and meet new people in your local area, all whilst making a difference to those living with Parkinson's in Winchester.

The group meets each month, but many of our volunteers undertake parts of their roles from home - at a time that suits them. This is a flexible role, and you could be doing any or all of the tasks on the role description - speak to your staff contact for more detail.

Local groups across the UK are run by volunteers and offer friendship and support to people living with Parkinson's and their families and friends. Each group has a committee, who work together to plan the groups activities or fundraising - all in line with Parkinson's UK guidelines.

What you will be doing

• Keep up to date about the news and developments of Parkinson's UK more widely, sharing these with the group
• contributing ideas for fundraising, activities and speakers
• sharing experiences with the committee and connecting with the local community
• helping to prepare for and clear up after group meetings
• assisting at fundraising events and any activities arranged by the branch
• taking notes / minutes at meetings and events

The skills you need

• be a good communicator, as you will be working with a wide range of different people
• Honest; you'll know when to ask for help, or when tasks might be seen as less important, and able to share that with Parkinson's UK and your group
• be collaborative and team focused, as you will take part in regular meetings and discussions

About the opportunity 

This role involves providing talks to a variety of groups, schools and organisations within your local area, raising awareness of the charity and promoting our fundraising activities. 

There is no minimum commitment. Times can vary, and you can choose which talks you attend. Talks mainly take place during the week, with some evenings and weekends. The length of each talk will vary depending on the group’s requirements. 

Talk requests are handled by our fundraising team, however you can secure your own talks if you wish.

What is involved 

• Giving talks about the charity to groups, schools, and organisations local to you.

• Raising awareness of Canine Partners and what we do.

• Handing out literature, taking donations, cheque presentations and directing people to our website. 

• Use your great customer service skills to enhance people’s interactions with the charity. 

• Meet people of all ages and backgrounds. 

• Raising awareness of volunteer opportunities with the charity. 

What we require from you 

• Age 18 and over. 

• Attendance at an annual speaker training session. 

• Access to your own transport with flexibility to visit different locations. 

• A polite, confident, and personable manner. 

• Experience of public speaking or delivering presentation to small groups. 

• Comfortable using Powerpoint presentations and showing YouTube videos. 

• Excellent customer service skills.

Why we want you

Sick, injured and homeless pets have relied on Blue Cross for help since 1897. Each year, thousands of dogs, cats, small pets and horses turn to the charity’s animal hospitals, clinics and rehoming services for treatment and support.

Our Volunteer Pet Welfare Speakers provide an informative and influential service by talking to children in primary schools and youth groups about responsible pet ownership and dog safety which enables us to improve the lives of thousands of pets. This role is for speakers who will visit and deliver talks to young people in primary schools and youth groups in their local area. We would love you to join us and help us help more pets in need

What you will be doing

• Having an informal interview with the team prior to selection
• Training online via e-learning to become a Pet Welfare Speaker
• Contacting primary schools using details we have given you to arrange all the details for your talks
• Visiting primary school and youth groups in your local area
• Delivering interactive presentations and fun talks to groups of children at primary schools during the day, and some youth groups such as Brownies and Cubs during the evening.
• committing to deliver talks throughout the school year on behalf of Blue Cross
• Using Assemble, our online volunteering system for information and communication

The skills you need

• To be a confident public speaker; happy to deliver PowerPoint presentations and talk to sometimes large numbers of children and young people in schools and youth groups
• To be self-motivated and happy to organise talks from details we have given you
• To be computer literate as you will need to complete your training online, deliver our pre-designed presentations and use Assemble, our online volunteering system to keep in touch
• To enjoy teaching and working with young people and have a keen interest in pet care and dog safety
• To have access to your own car or reliable public transport
• To have daytime availability during term-time

Disclaimer

Online training can take several weeks so you will need to commit to training before you can fully get stuck into your role. You will need to have term-time daytime and ideally some evening availability. You will need to have flexibility during the day in term-time and ideally some evening availability, dependant on demand. You'll need to be 17 or older for this role. You must have access to your own car or reliable public transport. Talks are delivered in person within a 20 mile radius of your home. Expenses are available. As this role involves liaising with children and young people, you will need to be prepared to undertake a DBS check. If you are using your own vehicle we will also need to complete some licence, insurance, MOT and tax checks. Your Key responsibilities will be to:

• Sharing the Ministry of MAF to churches & Groups in your area
• Encouraging those attending to regularly pray and to receive further MAF updates through signing up to the Supporter Discovery programme.
• Pro-actively use your local network to look for opportunities to speak about the work of MAF.
• Build and maintain relationships with local church groups.
• Identify potential opportunities where the work of MAF can be profiled.
• Minimum commitment of 12 presentations a year.

If this sounds like you, you’re the person we’re looking for to support our Erdington Sight Loss Support group meeting. The group began in 2019 and we resumed meeting face to face in May 2022.

We would like your help with:

• Planning and organising group meetings
• Liaising with the venue
• Contacting and booking guest speakers
• Supporting volunteers with sight loss with their volunteering activities.
• Sighted guiding
• Giving practical help to individuals so they can take part in the events.

How often will I be needed?
