Alex, The Leukodystrophy Charity (Alex TLC) is a small, independent rare disease charity competing for essential resources within an extremely competitive arena.
Like many other small charities, we have grown organically from an informal support group to the recognised voice for leukodystrophy patients and their families. In order to fulfil our charitable objectives we need to increase and sustain our corporate income levels.
Could you spare a few hours a week to help us?
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for volunteers, preferably with corporate fundraising experience to:
• research the corporate giving landscape and the interests of potential donors
• identify potential corporate donors and partners whose corporate social responsibility (CSR) goals align with our mission and values
• approach local and national businesses in person and over the telephone to inform them of the work of Alex TLC
• keep a record of all approaches

ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for volunteers, preferably with experience of community engagement and networking, to:
· Research and develop a database of local authority websites
· Research and develop a database of other charities and support organisations, who may support individuals affected by leukodystrophy
· Request for Alex TLC to be added as a support organisation to the above resource lists
· Improve awareness of the charity and leukodystrophy within local authorities, other charities, and support organisations
· Research ways that we can improve our outreach to yet-to-reach groups within the community

OVERALL PURPOSE OF ROLE
MAIN ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Using the voluntary working practices, policies, procedures and values set by Alex TLC, work with paid staff to ensure the charity shop business is run accordingly.
Work to the high standards expected at all Alex TLC shop premises according to the requests of the Shop Manager.
Work as a team member, taking full responsibility for all shop duties undertaken.
Participate in all training and legislative checks required by Alex TLC, statutory and specific to role.
CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES (INTERNAL & EXTERNAL)
Maintain excellent levels of customer service (remembering customer service extends to colleagues and service providers, as well as customers), going above and beyond where possible.
TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Expert knowledge of the safe and correct use of all equipment used in the day to day running of the charity shop, for example the till, steamer, pricing equipment. Training is provided.
OTHER FEATURES OF JOB
Hours of work are according to those agreed between yourself and the Shop Manager.

Opportunity to attend the Alex TLC Community Weekend and meet sufferers of leukodystrophy and their families. Volunteers assist in the running of activities during the Weekend and attend the social events included.

We are Alex, The Leukodystrophy Charity (Alex TLC).
Alex TLC is a trusted and experienced organisation offering support and information for all those affected by a genetic leukodystrophy. Formerly ALD Life, an internationally recognised centre of excellence for people affected by adrenoleukodystrophy and adrenomyeloneuropathy, the charity was established in 2004.
Due to popular demand, we extended our services to support all leukodystrophies in 2019 and became Alex, The Leukodystrophy Charity.

VOLUNTARY GRANT FUNDRAISER
Alex TLC is a trusted and experienced organisation offering support and information for all those affected by leukodystrophy. Leukodystrophies are rare genetic disorders that mainly affect the white matter of the central nervous system, (ie the brain or spinal cord). They affect people of all ages and backgrounds, most notably children. Leukodystrophies are usually degenerative, causing symptoms such as impaired mobility, vision, speech and hearing, incontinence, inability to swallow and loss of cognitive skills. In many cases, this sadly means a reduced or limited lifespan.
Established in 2004, we are recognised by the NHS and global stakeholders as the "go to" organisation for those affected by these devastating conditions in the UK.

What is the purpose of this role?
To support the Patients’ Representative by providing advocacy (both in person in a hospital setting as well as over the telephone) to older patients in Lings Bar Hospital (and their family/carers) and following their discharge home, as well as providing crucial administrative support to the service.
What impact does this role have?
Advocacy support and administration assistance will ensure the continued effective and efficient running of the Patients’ Representative Service. It ensures that we can reach and support as many patients and their families/carers as possible during their stay, as well as signposting and referring them on to services to help them remain as independent as possible on discharge.
What activities might you be involved in?
The following are examples of the type of support you could be asked to provide:
- Undertaking simple advocacy cases or aspects of cases, as identified by the Patients’ Representative.
- Meeting with patients and their families at the hospital to listen to their views and to support them to determine desired outcomes and act according to their wishes.
- Undertaking follow up telephone calls once people have been discharged from hospital for a period of up to 3 months.
- Supporting patients and families by signposting/referring onto other services.
- Documenting interventions and outcomes onto the charity’s client computerised database.
- Documenting interventions and outcomes onto the services Excel spreadsheet which will assist the Patients’ Representative to complete reports for commissioning purposes.
- Alerting the Patients’ Representative or Service Manager to any safeguarding concerns that may arise.
What are we looking for?
Someone who….
- Has a genuine interest in the wellbeing of older people.
· Is honest and reliable with a friendly personality.
· Has the ability to follow instructions and understands the importance of confidentiality.
· Has a good standard of literacy, numeracy, and computer skills (can use Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel for the purpose of data entry).
- Will work closely with the Patients’ Representative to ensure the best outcomes for patients and their families and be able to identify any issues or concerns that will need raising to the Patients’ Representative, demonstrating a willingness to seek advice and support where necessary.
- Can remain independent when advocating for patients and/or their family members whilst remaining professional to members of hospital staff.
- Can use their own initiative and volunteer unsupervised whilst at the same time being a valued member of the wider advocacy team.
· Will undertake training essential to the role.
- Will volunteer within the policies, procedures, and guidelines of Age UK Notts, including the Age UK Notts’ Volunteering Policy.
When would you be needed to volunteer?
Ideally, we would like a minimum of 2 days support a week, at times that meet your availability and our service requirements.

All volunteers receive an introduction to the charity as well as the necessary training you need to fulfil your volunteering role. In addition to this you will also receive ongoing support and access to further training opportunities as they arise, ensuring that your volunteering experience is a fulfilling and positive one.

What’s involved?
There are governor vacancies across England and Wales. Some schools are also looking for remote governors who don't need to live near the school they support.

About DAISY
DAISY is a collection of disability and mental health focused arts organisations which promote and celebrate the great artistic work being created in Surrey. The organisation strives to develop the South East as the lead region in the UK for disability and deaf cultural activity, making Surrey a welcoming and inclusive place for all artists to practise. DAISY works with Disabled Artists and its member organisations to share skills and resources. We work with cultural partners across Surrey to put on exhibitions, create artworks and increase the awareness and status of Disability Arts.
The Role
In this voluntary role, you will be joining our five other Directors - Laura Jones (Co-Artistic Director of Stop Gap), Hayley Bull (CEO of Bloomin’ Arts) and Julie Hoyle (Artist) and Leah Zakss (Freelance Arts and Music Consultant), Cara Flowers (Artistic and Managing Director of DAISY) - to help DAISY to raise awareness of the incredible art being created in Surrey by Disabled Artists.
Having recently launched a number of new initiatives and under different management, DAISY is entering a new phase of its development and growth and as a Non-Executive Director, you will have the chance to make a real difference to the Disabled Artists we work with. We are looking for a number of people to join our board with, ideally, a background or interest in one or more of the following: finance, fundraising, organisational development, governance and the arts. DAISY is currently in the process of transforming from a Community Interest Company (CIC) with a board of Directors to becoming a registered charity (CIO). When this happens, the Directors will then become Trustees.
Potential profile:
● Our priority is to recruit someone with lived experience of a disability, in order to offer diverse perspectives and to represent the people we work with.
● Close connections with the County of Surrey or nearby.
● A passion for the Arts, ideally Disability Arts and/or Social Justice
● A clear understanding and alignment to our values of equality and inclusivity for all
● A big picture thinker with a collaborative approach who will understand the challenges of operating as part of a unified Board
As a Director of the DAISY board, you will be expected to meet every few months for an online meeting to discuss future decisions. Other tasks may be required as deemed appropriate but to date these have been fairly light-touch. In order to ensure we are the right fit for you, we ask that you attend at least one Directors meeting with a review before officially becoming a DAISY Director. We will endeavour to provide you with a welcome pack to ensure you have all the information you need to make that decision.

Governors for Schools recruits and matches volunteers with school governing boards and provides ongoing support.
What’s involved?
There are governor vacancies across England and Wales. Some schools are also looking for remote governors who don't need to live near the school they support.
Governors volunteer at board level to set the strategic vision for their school. This involves constructively challenging current processes, using your unique skills to support senior leaders, and overseeing school finances. You’ll be involved in areas such as monitoring, budget management, and data analysis. As well as putting your expertise to good use, you’ll have the opportunity to develop your professional skills. Ultimately, you’ll work towards facilitating the delivery of a broad and exciting curriculum and oversee wellbeing and inclusion initiatives. Governance represents a fantastic opportunity to develop yourself while making a real impact on the education of children and young people.
Governors work collaboratively with the headteacher and other members of the board, including parents and school staff. In most schools, full board meetings are held termly, as are committee meetings. Many governors will sit on a committee linked to their expertise or interests, such as teaching and learning or finance and resources. In addition to attending meetings, governors will need to read the papers in advance, complete training courses, and occasionally visit their school.
Governors usually support schools for a period of four years and with an estimated time commitment of 7 hours per month. During these hours, you will attend meetings, read papers, attend training sessions, and make occasional visits to school.
Who can be a governor?
The most important part of being a governor is the ability to ask questions, provide support and have the best interests of the school at heart. You don't have to be a parent or have experience in education to become a governor. Schools seek a wide range of skills to support the board, including finance, HR, and data analysis.
Boards also need governors with a diversity of backgrounds and lived experiences to ensure a range of perspectives are considered during board meetings.
Schools welcome professional experience, as well as community insight and experience of working collaboratively.
You need to be aged 18 or above and there are certain criminal convictions that would exclude you from the role. A Disclosure and Barring Service check will be carried out by the school.

Your regional Partnership Manager will then look at vacancies that match your requirements. Once a school is identified, you will have the opportunity to discuss the role with them in more detail, visit the school, and observe a meeting. If appointed, a DBS check will take place and, in some cases, the school will seek references.

Cats Protection is the UK’s leading feline welfare charity and our vision is a world where every cat is treated with kindness and an understanding of its needs. Cats are at the centre of everything we do and our objectives are: homing, neutering and educating people about cats and their care. We help thousands of cats across the UK each year thanks to our network of dedicated volunteers, staff and supporters.
A bit about this role
If you enjoy driving and would love to use those skills to help our cats, this could be the role for you. Our transport volunteers provide vital assistance to our teams and volunteer groups in the local area by transporting equipment, litter, food– and even cats! They have the essential role of connecting our network of volunteers, sites, vets and supporters.
Without the passionate and committed teams of volunteers across Cats Protection, we wouldn’t be able to help the thousands of cats and kittens each year that rely on us for help.
What can you expect to be doing?
- Arranging and transporting equipment, litter and cat food
- Transporting cats to and from vets, foster homes and centres
- Transporting equipment to and from events

The branch vehicle is used within this role, so any applicants need to hold a current driving licence.

We’re looking for someone with
- Good organisation and time management skills
- Knowledge of the local community
- A current driver’s licence
- Either access to a vehicle or happy to drive a Cats Protection van (subject to availabilty)
- The ability to carry out some heavy lifting
Time expectation
Our transport volunteers usually spend two to four hours per week in this role, which is flexible and can be shared by more than one volunteer if needed.
Support, guidance and keeping you safe
At Cats Protection we believe our volunteers should be happy and confident in their roles. We provide support and guidance from our National Cat Centre and through our regional and local volunteer groups and teams. We offer engaging online and face-to-face training, expenses and have policies and processes to help volunteers get the most out of their time with us.

Do you want to be inspired by the impact of education? Schools across Southampton and the surrounding area are looking for skilled volunteers to support education by becoming school governors.
What will you be doing?
Governing bodies are responsible for the strategic management of a school and will make decisions about a wide range of issues
The core responsibilities involved are:
- Ensuring accountability
- Providing support and challenge to the schools senior leadership team
- Monitoring and evaluating the school’s progress
- Budgetary allocation and control
- Shaping plans for school improvement and overseeing their implementation
- Setting the school’s aims and values
- Appointing senior members of staff including the Head Teacher
The governing body is usually split in to a small number of committees, each responsible for one area such as finance or pupil achievement. These committees will meet separately from the main governing body to discuss relevant issues in more detail. Discussion is then fed back at a full governing body meeting.
A school governing body is made up of representatives from the school, the parents, the local authority and the local community.
What are we looking for?
You don’t need any specific skills or experience to be a school governor. You must be over 18, but you don’t need to be a parent or have experience working in education. Often, it’s the outside perspective you can bring that a school needs.
Professional experience in areas such as HR, finance, law, or project management are all useful to a school. But soft skills such as leadership, communication, and problem solving are also great additions.
What difference will you make?
Governors make decisions that affect schools for years to come. Our recent impact survey found that our volunteers bring £9.9 million worth of value to schools each year, and 9/10 volunteers would recommend being a governor to a friend.
As a governor, you can visit the school to gain an understanding of the culture and ethos and to get the most out of the role. You’ll also have the opportunity to meet children, parents, and teachers, and see the impact of your work first-hand.
