Tushinde Children’s Trust, founded in 2010, believes the best place for children to grow up is in their family units. We work in the informal settlements of Mathare and Kiambiu of Nairobi, Kenya. Our targeted programmes and dedicated social workers provide tailored family care and access to education for the poorest families. We help families strengthen and stay together. We provide families with a path from crisis to independence. We support families to help children thrive.
Tushinde is a child-focused organisation and committed to child protection and the protection of vulnerable adults. All shortlisted candidates will be screened prior to joining the board and have background checks that may go beyond contacting referees. Every candidate, regardless of post applied for, will be expected to adhere to the principles of child protection and ensure that those around them do the same.
Tushinde is a UK registered charity, with a board of six trustees. Its programme is delivered through a Kenyan registered NGO of the same name, which has its own independent board of trustees. We are looking for up to three new trustees to join our UK board, to compliment and broaden the skills and knowledge of our existing trustees.
The Board of trustees meets four times a year and is responsible for ensuring:
-
We comply with our governing document and the law
-
Act in the charity’s best interest
-
Manage the charity’s resources responsibly
-
Act with reasonable skill and care
-
Ensure we are accountable to our stakeholders
In addition, we focus on:
-
Oversight of the Kenyan operations, particularly safeguarding
-
Fundraising to support our ongoing programme
-
Potential partnership opportunities
-
UK charity governance
Beyond the regular board meetings there are plenty of opportunities to support the organisation both in the UK and Kenya. All UK meetings are remote and are typically scheduled at 18:00 UK time.
We are looking for a flexible, committed and reliable individual who has an interest in child welfare in Africa. In addition, we would be particularly interested to hear from individuals with any of the following skills or experience:
-
Fundraising, particularly growing or diversifying income streams
-
Child welfare, particularly in low or middle income countries
-
Risk and charity governance
-
And finally, if you have experience of or a connection to Kenya or East Africa even better!
Unfortunately, we only have the resources to contact those candidates who are shortlisted. Please apply as soon as you can: we reserve the right to close our recruitment process early if suitable candidates apply.

We have an exciting opportunity for someone with a desire to make a difference to join our Board of Trustees. You will bring an enthusiasm for social impact and a keen interest in helping to shape the future of a vibrant and friendly charitable social enterprise.
Who are Acorn Early Years?
Acorn Early Years is a charitable social enterprise providing childcare and early education, with day nurseries, forest schools, out-of-school clubs, and specialist early years catering and training services. We are growing rapidly, despite the challenges facing the sector, with just over 450 employees, 16 nurseries and an expected turnover of approximately £10m this year.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to join our friendly team of voluntary trustees. We are committed to being representative of our communities and aim to bring together a variety of skills and experience to shape how we work, and to continually develop our model of excellence. We are particularly keen to recruit someone with knowledge or experience of Early Years and/or Forest School. You will need to be an excellent communicator with strong leadership skills. In addition to your expertise, alignment with our values is essential, and that you are able to bring broad life experience from other aspects of your professional and personal life. We recognise that the skills of a trustee can be developed through a range of different experiences and it is not necessary to have previous experience as a trustee to apply.
Being a trustee is an unpaid role usually lasting at least three years. To carry out the duties of a trustee you will need to take part in about five board meetings each year, held in Milton Keynes. There are also specialist trustee committees which further support our work.
What difference will you make?
Our board of trustees play a very important role in our organisation, shaping and supporting our current work and the future direction and development of the organisation. As a trustee you will be joining the Trustee Board which has been making an impact since our charity was established in 2012.
To find out more or if you would like the opportunity to discuss the role before applying, please contact Sue, our HR Manager (details on our website). If you would like to apply to be an Acorn trustee, please send your CV together with a covering letter detailing your experience in the management of Human Resources to the same email address.

Our Vision
A world where all children and young people grow up in families rich in the essential ingredients required for them to realise their ambitions and dreams.
Our Mission
To create a community that gives individuals the strength and foundation to realise a better future for young people and families.
Our Purpose
Every young person has the right to a bright future.
Role Summary
Community Foster Care’s (CFC) trustees are essential in ensuring that we can continue to strive towards our mission. As a trustee you will ensure that CFC remains on course with delivering its key activities. At CFC we are committed to creating a culture driven by our values and based on diversity, exploration, critical reflection, courage to challenge and belief in the power of people. Trustees have the overall legal responsibility for a charity. The law describes charity trustees as ‘the persons having the general control and management of the administration of a charity’ (Charities Act 2011, section 177). Charity trustees are those responsible under the charity's governing document for controlling the administration and management of the charity. This is the case regardless of the terminology used to describe the role. For CFC, the charity trustees are the board of trustees.
The Role of the Board
At its simplest, the role of the board of trustees is to ensure all of CFC’s assets are safeguarded and applied to the charitable purposes of CFC. The board of trustees must always act in the best interests of CFC, exercising the same standard of duty of care that a prudent person would apply if looking after the affairs of someone for whom they have responsibility. The trustee board must act as a group and not as individuals.
Key requirements of which you should be aware
Trustees are expected to attend an induction session with CFC prior to their first board meeting. Trustees are expected to attend all board meetings. Board meetings are held three times a year, usually in the late afternoon – early evening. The meetings tend to be held at our Kingsholm Office in Gloucester, but participants can attend via remote video call. From time to time there are additional meetings and planning sessions.
• Papers are distributed one week in advance of meetings
.• Trustees are asked to join one of three board sub committees, each of which meets three times a year, for approximately two hours, during normal office hours
• Trustees can claim out of pocket expenses.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
The duties of a trustee board member are to:
• ensure that CFC complies with its governing document (its Articles of Association), charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations including the Fostering Regulations 2011.
• ensure that CFC pursues its objectives as defined in its governing document.
• ensure CFC applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects. For example, it must not spend money on activities which are not included in the objects, however worthwhile they may be.
• contribute actively to the board of trustees by giving firm strategic direction to CFC, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets, and evaluating performance against agreed targets.
• own the organisation’s Risk Register and mitigations.
• safeguard the good name and values of CFC.
• ensure the financial stability of CFC. In addition to the above statutory duties, each trustee should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have, to help the board of trustees reach sound decisions. This may involve leading discussions, identifying key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, and evaluating or offering advice on other areas in which the trustee has particular expertise. What we require from all our employees and volunteers:
• A commitment and alignment with Community Foster Care’s Values.
• A tenacity and commitment to resolve and develop our ability to enable children to thrive.
• A willingness to embrace challenge and actively seek constructive feedback.
• A willingness and ability to be a highly functioning team player.
• A willingness to work in a flexible way.
• A commitment to anti-oppressive practice, underpinned by an understanding and promotion of equality and diversity.
• Positively promote and publicise the work of Community Foster Care.
• Always represent Community Foster Care in a professional manner.
• Undertake training and development deemed necessary for the pursuance and development of the post.
• Comply with Equal Opportunities, GDPR and employment practices.
Community Foster Care is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children; applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service clearance at enhanced level.
