About the board and Trustee role
Trustees are volunteers who oversee the strategic direction of the charity and ensure its compliance with regulators and the law. They are also ambassadors for the charity; and they provide the staff team, which does the day-to-day work, with both scrutiny and support.
The full board meets quarterly. Two meetings focus on ‘business’ – approving budgets and policies, making key decisions, etc. The other two are more discursive, covering strategic issues.
We have four sub-committees: Finance Audit Investment & Risk, Impact & Income Development, Research & Policy, and Governance & People. Trustees are generally invited to sit on at least one sub-committee, which gives them more detailed insight into the charity’s work in that area. A number of trustees choose to sit on multiple sub-committees (there is no upper limit) and trustees are also welcome to attend any sub-committee, for example as a one-off, to see what happens or if they have an interest in a particular agenda item. Sub-committees also meet quarterly.
And there is usually one strategy day a year.
We currently have ten trustees on our board, with skills and experience in charity leadership and governance, addictions psychiatry, academic research, public affairs, policing, and marketing. We are looking to a recruit a further one trustee.
What we can offer
- Our board of trustees, and our charity as a whole, is warm and welcoming.
- Everyone is entitled to have their views heard and we work hard to be inclusive of everyone.
- We are well organised and professionally run.
- We are a dynamic and fast-paced organisation, with a huge range of interesting work happening.
- You will have opportunities for personal development and to attend a range of interesting events in your role as a trustee.
- Finally, and most importantly, we are laser-focused on making as much difference as possible to end alcohol harm.

“Working at The Pioneer has been, above everything, so much fun! I have met a great community of people who work hard to make sure everyone can have access to art, music and sport. Their events, like the festival days, are a joy to be part of” Pioneer volunteer
ABOUT THE PIONEER CLUB
Founded in 1941 for young evacuees from London during the Second World War, The Pioneer Club is a registered CIC and charity supporting communities in St Albans and beyond. We deliver creative arts programmes through events, workshops, training, and classes. Whether it’s live music in our iconic music hall, lessons with our amazing team of pro skateboarders, or on the stage with our performing arts programmes, there’s something for everyone at The Pioneer!
As an historic grassroots music venue, we have witnessed some of the biggest names in music come through our doors, including Motorhead and The Zombies of “She’s Not There”. Enter Shikari are another hugely successful St Albans band who started out at The Pioneer Club, before moving on to achieve global success, including headlining Download Festival and performing at Wembley Arena.
WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT
Taking part in cultural activities is so important for children and young people. Access to music, skate, art and performing arts leads to benefits such as:
✓ Improved self-esteem and self-control
✓ Decreased hyperactivity and inattention
✓ Reduced antisocial or criminal behaviours
✓ Improved prosocial behaviours, such as empathy and helping others
Sadly, funding for the arts is decreasing year on year. And grassroots music venues are closing at a rate of 2 per week. This affects all young people, but especially those from the least advantaged communities who, as a result, may never pick up a musical instrument or have access to art and culture.
As a charity, we couldn’t exist without the support of our volunteers. As part of the team, you will be helping us to improve our building through maintenance and repairs, which helps us to keep delivering our services.
TIME COMMITMENT
We can’t deliver our services without the generosity and time of our volunteers, so work to be flexible around you. You can commit to anything from a few hours a week, or more.
WHAT CAN WE GIVE YOU?
- A benefits package including: free access to exclusive Pioneer supporter events, early booking privileges for music and other events, room booking discount, a Pioneer T- shirt, attendance at our annual staff and volunteer event
- Training- events and safeguarding
- The chance to be part of a team with regular meet ups and social events
- The opportunity and support to achieve any professional goals
- A chance to be a change maker, growing your community and supporting access to the arts for everyone
- The opportunity for references

SMALL ANIMALS FOSTERER
Small Animals Fosterer (Guildford & Epsom)
Can you help us by providing a calm, safe, and caring environment for our small furries whilst we find them their fur-ever home?
Overview of the opportunity
Often when we think about animal fostering, cats, and dogs spring to mind, but have you ever thought about fostering our smaller animals? The RSPCA received more than 5,000 reports last year about rabbits and other small furries relating to neglect or abandonment and rescued an average of 340 small furries a month! To help us with the rehoming of these small animals, we are actively looking to add to our fantastic team of volunteer fosterers.
Whether you foster a rabbit, ferret, guinea pig or any of the small animals that come into our care, you will play a vital role in looking after the animals until their case is resolved or they find a new home. As a small animal’s fosterer, you would play an essential role in providing the animals in our care with a temporary home whilst they are being rehomed. Like us, even small furries have specific needs and requirements, but rest assured, once we have guided you through the fostering process the animal centre will ensure that you have all the necessary guidance, equipment, food, and veterinary care.
When our small furries are in your foster care you will:
- Provide them with care, safe suitable housing, and space for playtime, as outlined in our policies and guidelines.
- Ensure that they are groomed if appropriate and fed and watered.
- Provide them with suitable and clean bedding to keep them cosy.
- Give them lots of attention and plenty of cuddles as they are very sociable animals.
- The RSPCA is happy to reimburse you for any pre-agreed expenses that you may incur through volunteering for us.
What we are looking for in a volunteer Small Animals Fosterer:
- Volunteers aged 18 or over who have had plenty of experience of caring for animals.
- Fostering experience is beneficial but not essential as training is provided.
- For their wellbeing, our small furries may need to be fostered in pairs, so please bear this in mind.
- Any existing pets or animals need to have been spayed/neutered (some medical reasons may mean they cannot be so, please let us know if this is the case).
What we can offer you as a volunteer Small Animals Fosterer
- You will be making a massive difference to the welfare of the small animals in your care.
- Join a community which will enable you to meet new people and make new friends.
- Learning new skills through our comprehensive induction and fostering training programme.
- Enhance your CV by adding your volunteering experience and newly acquired skills.
Our voluntary roles are subject to an informal interview and trial period. We will ask you to provide contact details for two referees, and dependant on the position, you may need to sign an agreement and undergo specific training before starting the role.
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.

We are partnering Music Therapy Works (MTW) an independent charity based in the West Midlands, whose mission is to deliver comprehensive music therapy services for individuals, groups and communities in a wide range of circumstances.
MTW provides music therapy to support and enhance communication, self-expression, and wellbeing. They work in a variety of settings including schools, hospitals, care homes and hospices to help people whose lives have been affected by injury, illness or disability through supporting their psychological, emotional, cognitive, physical, communicative and social needs.
We are seeking a new Trustee for MTW to join their current board and support the CEO to bring new insight and skills to set and approve the strategic direction of the charity.
What is a Trustee?
- Being a trustee means making decisions that will impact people’s lives and make a real difference to our community.
- Trustees are the people who lead the charity and decide how it is run. They play a vital role in helping to define and develop the work of the charity.
- Trustees work alongside the management team, using their skills and experience to help the charity to define and achieve its strategic aims. But they do not undertake the day-to-day work of running the organisation.
- Trustees are also Directors of MTW as it is both a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee.
- Trustees give their time on a voluntary basis. They are not paid fees, but they can claim reasonable expenses.
What do you get out of being a MTW Trustee?
- Being a Trustee is a great way to ‘give something back’ while developing your skills in leadership, influencing, debating, negotiating, strategic and organisational planning.
- You will have the opportunity to meet, network and learn from people who may have very different professional backgrounds and life experiences to your own.
- Providing opportunities for training and development, every new trustee is assigned a Board buddy to help them to feel part of the team.
MTW want their Board to reflect the diverse community that MTW supports. We would particularly like to hear from you if you reflect MTW’s beneficiaries. For example: are you a disabled person? Do you have mental health needs? Are you a parent or teacher of a young disabled person, or a young person with mental health needs? Are you part of an adoptive family or do you work with children in care? Are you a carer for a person with dementia?
Whether you’re an experienced trustee or wanting to take up your first position at board level, we really want to hear from you! It is not necessary for you to have previous experience as a Trustee - training will be provided.
For more information, please contact Sandra Smith, Associate Director, Charisma Charity Recruitment. Your application should be submitted through the Charisma website and include your CV and supporting statement.
We welcome and encourage applications from people of all backgrounds. We do not discriminate on the basis of disability, race, colour, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, age, veteran status or other category protected by law.
