About the role 

Trustees of Help Musicians are responsible for directing the affairs of the charities and ensuring they are delivering against their missions, are well – run and are acting in accordance with their charitable objectives. 

We are now searching for new Trustees to join our Board in 2025 to help us to continue to ensure that those working in music can thrive.

The Merchant’s House Gift Shop, located on Marlborough High Street within a beautifully preserved 17th century historic house and museum, is looking for a new shop director to help lead our small, dedicated team in this well-loved gift shop  – famed for its beautiful Christmas Room.

The Shop was established 30 years ago and is run by a subsidiary trading company (The Merchant’s House Trading Ltd) - wholly owned by The Merchant’s House Trust. The shop is a key revenue generator for the Trust’s activities, donating its profits back to the trust. It has a small number of paid staff (including the Shop Manager) as well as volunteer workers.

What we are looking for

We are seeking a volunteer Shop Director to join the small board of company directors for The Merchant’s House Trading Ltd. We are looking for an individual with relevant retail experience who can help us ensure the shop is well managed, commercially successful and supports the visitor experience in this beautiful, unique and culturally significant building. This is an unpaid position.

The Merchant’s House is embarking on an exciting new phase as we embed our new strategic plan, having opened for full visitor access for the first time in 2024. As we embark on a new phase, we need to breath fresh life into our shop and ensure it is both commercially viable and supports the overall visitor experience to the historic house.

The role

· To provide leadership and operational governance of the shop, setting objectives and targets and ensuring successful commercial performance.

· To line manage the Shop Manager and Assistant Manager.

· To work closely with the Trust to ensure that the shop is aligned to overall strategy, supporting the goals of the trust and enhancing the visitor experience to the House.

As the Merchant’s House looks to expand its work and programmes with improved visitor experiences, education, and events, we are seeking to enhance our board.

We are seeking two additional trustees who can bring experience in the following specific areas:

1) A trustee with practical experience and knowledge of the Museum or Heritage sector, to help guide our work to process our collections, improve interpretation and visitor experience, seek grant funding, and achieve Museum Accreditation. This Trustee will also sit on our Heritage Committee.

2) A trustee with retail or visitor services experience, to help guide direction for our gift shop, located in the ground floor of the House and a vital part of our revenue generation. As we embark on a new phase of visitor access, we need to breathe fresh life into our shop and ensure it is both commercially viable and supports the overall visitor experience to the historic house. This Trustee will also be a director of our Limited Trading Company.

Role on Trustee board:

We are the awarding body for qualifications in walking, climbing and mountaineering leadership in England. We also administer two personal skills schemes, one for walking and one for climbing.

Role Description – Honorary Treasurer

The Honorary Treasurer is a key voluntary post within Mountain Training England and the wider network of related mountaineering organisations. As a member of the Board of Trustees, the Treasurer shares the responsibility for overseeing the management of the organisation and implementing the strategic objectives of its members. 

The Treasurer has an oversight role over all aspects of financial management, working closely with other members of the Board of Trustees to safeguard the organisation financially. They act as an informed reference point for the Chair and other Trustees.

Although it is the Treasurer’s responsibility to ensure proper financial records and procedures are maintained, much of this work is delegated to the Finance and Audit Sub-committee and paid staff.

Role of Mountain Training England Treasurer

• The Treasurer oversees the financial matters of Mountain Training England in line with good practice and in accordance with the governing document and legal requirements of the Charities and Companies Acts and reports both quarterly to the Board and also to the Members at three Council meetings per year about the financial health of the organisation.
• The Treasurer ensures that effective financial measures, controls and procedures are in place.
• The Treasurer takes the lead on the formulation of policies for finances, reserves and investments.

Specific Responsibilities

• To oversee/verify and present budgets, accounts, management accounts and financial statements to the Board and Members after discussion with the Finance Committee.  
• To ensure that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place.
• To ensure that full and accurate accounts and records are kept. 
• In conjunction with the Executive Officer maintain sound financial management of MTE’s resources, ensuring expenditure is in line with the charity’s objects.
• To ensure compliance with relevant legislation e.g. Companies and Charity legislation and contractual agreements with external agencies such as funders and statutory bodies
• Chairing the Finance and Audit Committee in line with its terms of reference and reporting back to the Board.
• Present the annual statement of accounts to the Members at the Annual General Meeting. 
• To liaise with designated staff about financial matters
• Advising on the financial implications of MTE’s strategic and operational plan.
• Liaising with the independent examiner to ensure that the annual accounts are compliant with the current Charities Statement of Recommended Practice. 
• Ensure any recommendations of the independent examiner are implemented
• Contribute to the fundraising strategy of the organisation.
• Advise on reserves policy and investment policy
• Ensure that there is no conflict between any investment held and the aims and objects of MTE or partner organisations
• Ensure that MTE has sufficient liquidity to meet its future commitments.

Commitment

As Treasurer you will chair the Finance & Audit Committee, which meets quarterly. You will also be expected to attend four Board meetings and three Members’ Council meetings per year. 

Occasional attendance at MTUKI Council meetings and Finance Planning Group meetings is required. 

Role Description – Adventure Activities Sector Trustee

Non-executive Trustee with experience/understanding of the Adventure Activities Sector.

Mountain Training England (MTE) is looking for the right person to join a Board of eight Trustees. The Trustees share the responsibility for overseeing the management of the organisation and implementing the strategic objectives of its members. 

Who are we looking for?

We seek a person who has an excellent knowledge of the wider mountaineering, climbing and hillwalking sector, and experience of the Mountain Training qualifications, and who can contribute to the Board’s work in developing and implementing national strategy to support competent leadership and participation in these activities.

Applications are open to anyone who believes they fit the requirements in the person specification.

Role Description 

The role of the Board is to set the strategic direction of the organisation, to oversee the implementation of that strategy and to ensure that the organisation is governed to the highest standards.

Commitments

The Board of Mountain Training England meets four times a year. There are a further three meetings of Members per year. See separate document explaining the time commitments.

Trustees also participate in sub-committees and special project groups such as the Finance sub-committee, the Screening committee and Award Review groups.

Trustees serve for a term of three years and are re-elected annually at the Annual General Meeting. At the end of the first three-year term of office Trustees are eligible for re-election for one further term of three years. From time to time the positions of Treasurer, Vice-Chair and Chair become subject to renewal. Applications are invited and the Members appoint at the Annual General Meeting.

Term

The Tower of London welcomes nearly three million visitors a year from around the world. The Tower is home to one of the most significant and recognised collections of historic graffiti in the world. It is a collection that contains at its heart the world famous ‘prisoner graffiti’ of the Tudor and Stuart period. It is surrounded by huge amounts of additional graffiti left by prisoners, residents, and visitors from the Middle Ages to the present day. This project aims to record all of the graffiti collection across the Tower of London.

We require volunteers to assist with the process of recording, cataloguing, and researching the graffiti collection at the Tower. The initial aim being to generate a 100% base line recording of the graffiti collection prior to working on high resolution imaging and analysis of the graffiti. This is an exciting opportunity to work with fascinating social and cultural history, discovering untold parts of the Tower’s story.

This would suit people with an interest in graffiti, art, history or working in the charity or heritage sectors, or in technical, archaeological photography, and who have accuracy and consistency in working practices.

This role would largely be undertaken at the Tower of London. Some of the work will take place in areas of the site with limited or restricted accessibility or in confined spaces.

The Charity

Ships and seafarers touch our lives like no other group of individuals and are largely invisible from us as they ply the oceans every day to bring us 90% of our daily necessities. To bring us our supplies seafarers navigate treacherous weather conditions and are separated from their homes and families for long periods. They often experience isolation, impacting their mental health. They can be abandoned by irresponsible ship owners, and they can be jailed through no fault of their own.

The Mission to Seafarers has been helping bring practical, emotional, and spiritual support to seafarers and their families since 1856. We are well established and well-known throughout the maritime world. Across our nine regions, our network of 200 port operations in 50 countries provides emergency assistance and the hand of friendship to those who find themselves lonely and isolated in a foreign port.

The Mission to Seafarers is a Christian charity closely linked with the Church of England and the wider Anglican Communion. While this is central to its purposes, it also enjoys a wide diversity of trustees, staff, volunteers and supporters, prides itself on the breadth of its partnerships, is deeply committed to the service of those of all faiths and none and expresses its “mission” in strongly holistic and practical ways.

The Board

The Charity is led by a high calibre Board of Trustees who are prominent leaders with wide experience of the shipping industry, leading members of the clergy or industry leaders with relevant experience. The Board is led by the Chairman, Thomas Boardley, who has over 30 years’ experience in the maritime sector, including several years as Marine Director at Lloyds Register. 

The Trustees provide appropriate oversight, strategic direction, expertise, support and contacts for the Mission’s work and hold meetings a minimum of four times a year (usually January, April, July and October). The Board also has the following sub-committees which usually meet once or twice a year: Audit and Risk, Governance and Nominations, Grants and Programme, Investment, and Remuneration. Trustees are usually required to sit on a minimum of one committee and some Trustees serve as the lead Trustee for one of our nine regions, and act as a sounding board for the regional director. The position of Trustee is voluntary but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed by The Mission.

The Role

Each Trustee term lasts for three years and Trustees may be appointed to the Board for up to three consecutive three-year terms making nine consecutive years. Board meetings are normally held in London with a hybrid (online) option available for each meeting when Trustees are unable to attend in person. Meetings normally last about three hours and Trustees are expected to devote sufficient time to prepare for meetings and attend. The Remuneration Committee normally meets once a year with occasional ad hoc meetings as required. 

Whilst the Charity has a large global footprint, most of its global work is carried out through locally employed personnel in the various regions, some of which are grant funded by the UK entity. The remit of the Remuneration Committee is therefore primarily ordained and lay staff in the United Kingdom with opportunity to contribute expertise in broader Board discussions including those relating to Human Resources Management globally. 

Trustee Role Description

• Working with other Trustees to ensure that the Mission pursues its charitable object, as defined in its governing document, by developing and agreeing a long-term strategy.
• Ensuring that the charity complies with its governing document, charity law, company law, any other relevant legislation or regulations and principles of good governance.
• Placing the Mission’s beneficiaries at the forefront of all debates about strategic direction, budget-setting, planning and other relevant functions.
• Ensuring the effective and efficient administration of the charity and that appropriate policies and procedures are in place for good governance.
• Ensuring the financial stability of the charity and that the organisation applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its charitable object.
• Ensuring that the Mission defines its goals and evaluates performance against agreed targets.
• Safeguarding the reputation and values of the charity and leading by example.
• Protecting and managing the property of the charity and ensuring the proper investment of the charity’s funds.
• Participating in any board induction, training and evaluation identified as an individual trustee and as part of the board or committee.

In addition to the above statutory duties, each trustee is expected to use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the board of trustees reach sound decisions. This may involve scrutinising board papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise. 

Member of Remuneration Committee Role description

In addition to those duties and responsibilities performed by all trustees, this role involves being a member of the Remuneration Committee. Responsibilities include:

• Alongside other members of the Committee, contributing skills, experience and opinions in order to ensure adequate scrutiny of the Charity’s remuneration policy.
• Advising the Committee and the Board on the charity’s HR practices and remuneration strategy.
• Acting as a sounding board for the Chief Operating Officer on HR matters as required.
• Acting as Deputy Lead Safeguarding Trustee. Experience of safeguarding practice is not essential to fulfil this role.
• Representing the Mission at occasional events, meetings or functions as appropriate.

Magic Me is looking for new trustees to join our Board and help us continue our work creating connections between generations through creative arts. This is a voluntary role, and we welcome individuals from all walks of life, particularly those from racially minoritized backgrounds, people under 30 or over 50, and those with lived experience in East London.

As part of your responsibilities, we’ll be asking that you form a new Creative Strategy Committee to provide guidance and support for the development of our arts projects, ensuring that the voices of our participants are heard at the highest level of governance.

• Governance and oversight: Ensure Magic Me operates for public benefit and aligns with its charitable objectives.
• Financial stewardship: Help ensure our resources are used effectively and participate in discussions on budgets and financial statements.
• Ambassadorial role: Promote Magic Me’s work to external stakeholders, enhancing our public profile.

Time Commitment & Location:

• Time Commitment: Approximately half a day per month, including quarterly Board meetings and sub-committee participation.
• Location: Board meetings take place in person in Bethnal Green, London. Committee meetings are held online.

The Members & Journal Administrator oversees the coordination and management of membership data and administers Journal communications on behalf of the ADH Journal Editor. As a member of the ADH Executive Committee, the role reports to the ADH Chair and to ADH Editor, with the option of recruiting and working alongside a Membership Assistant.

The Members and Journal Administrator oversees communications with members and subscribers, coordinates renewal processes and subscription levels, ensures upholding personal data protection in line with UK guidelines, implements and advises on members and Journal communications. The role contributes to upholding ADH charitable aims.

The role is particularly suited to individuals looking for experience in academic publishing, administration and seeking to extend their network in the dress and textile history sector. Our trustees play a vital role in achieving the Strata Florida Trust’s core aim – the restoration of the buildings of Mynachlog Fawr to create the Strata Florida Centre/Canolfan Ystrad Fflur as a place of heritage, culture and education. They oversee and steer the vision, strategy and progress of the Trust, drawing on their own knowledge, skills and networks.

As a small but ambitious charity we are seeking individuals for the role whose experience and skills will complement those of our existing board members and enable the Trust to continue to expand.

Remuneration: The role of Trustee is not accompanied by any financial remuneration.

Time commitment: Six Board meetings per year. Approximately 12 days in total including board meetings, and additional meetings, discussion and preparation. 

Reporting to Chairman of the Trustees  

Duties:

 

· Support and provide advice on the Strata Florida Trust’s purpose, vision, goals and activities.

· Approve operational strategies and policies, and monitor and evaluate their implementation.

· Oversee the Trust’s financial plans and budgets and monitor and evaluate progress.

· Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.

· Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively.

· Review and approve the Strata Florida Trust’s annual financial reports.

· Work with and support or challenge the Director of the Trust when needed.

· Contribute to regular reviews of the Trust’s own governance.

· Attend Board meetings, adequately prepared to contribute to discussions.

· Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect the Trust’s interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and/or any third party interests.

· Contribute to the broader promotion of the Trust’s objects, aims and reputation by applying your skills, expertise, knowledge and contacts.

As a small charity, there will be times when the trustees will need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings. This may involve leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, presenting externally, or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.

What we are looking for

We are looking for people willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and who will broaden the diversity of thinking on our board.

An interest in supporting heritage, Welsh culture, education, tourism, rural communities, and traditional skills is essential. We are particularly interested in those who have experience of operational delivery and professional skills including accountancy and income generation.

Previous governance experience would be an advantage but is not essential.

Personal skills and qualities

· Willingness and ability to understand and accept their responsibilities and liabilities as trustees and to act in the best interests of the organisation.

· Ability to think creatively and strategically, exercise good, independent judgement and work effectively as a board member.

· Effective communication skills and willingness to participate actively in discussion.

· Enthusiasm for our vision and mission and willing to act as an ambassador for the Trust.

· Trustees are appointed for a 4 year term of office, renewal for 3 further terms to a maximum of 12 years.

· This is a voluntary unpaid position.

· Attending 6 Board meetings annually (bimonthly beginning in January). Currently meetings are held at Y Beudy, Strata Florida, with the option to join via Zoom if required.
