Support U is a leading LGBTQ+ help and support service based in Reading, servicing the Thames Valley area.
We are looking to revitalise our Trustee Board and require a new Chair of Trustees. This is an exciting opportunity to help take the charity forward and have a real impact on those we support.
What will you be doing?
- General statutory responsibilities as a Trustee (please request candidate pack for further details).
- Specific responsibilities as Chair of Trustees:
- Provide leadership and ensure focus on delivering the organization’s charitable purposes for greater public benefit.
- Chair and facilitate board meetings.
- Direct board policy-making.
- Ensure implementation of meeting decisions.
- Represent the organization at functions and meetings, acting as spokesperson when appropriate.
- Bring impartiality and objectivity to decision-making.
- Plan the annual cycle of board and general meetings, such as the AGM.
- Set agendas for board and general meetings.
- Develop the board of Trustees through induction, training, appraisal, and succession planning.
- Address conflicts within the board and organization, liaising with the Chief Executive if staff are employed.
- This role is mainly office-based
Time Commitment
We have recently navigated a transitional period, which included our longstanding CEO stepping down and changes to the services we provide.
It would therefore be helpful to have someone who has slightly more time available than is typical during this interim period, as we are really looking for someone to lead the Board in deciding what direction Support U decides to move in.
We are currently having monthly Board meetings (which are usually held online) which the Chair is expected to attend.
What are we looking for?
- Leadership skills.
- Experience of committee work.
- Tact and diplomacy.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Impartiality, fairness and the ability to respect confidences.
In most circumstances, it would also be desirable for the Chair/Vice-Chair to have knowledge of the type of work undertaken by the organisation and a wider involvement with the voluntary sector and other networks.

Can you spare one or two hours once a week or a fortnight to spend time with a ScotsCare client? You could be having a friendly chat in their home, going for a walk in a local park, or around the shops, or visiting museums and other places of interest together.
Giving someone who is struggling with some aspects of life, the simple gift of time and companionship could make the world of difference to their sense of wellbeing, particularly if they feel alone, are socially isolated, or simply need someone to socialise with. As one of our Buddies told us recently, “this is an easy, very meaningful way to help someone and is immensely rewarding and fun!” Our clients are adults of all ages, mostly 60 or over.
You will need to commit to regular meetings for a minimum period of at least 6 months, longer if possible.
In return, we provide training, so you feel comfortable and confident in the role, and support you once you are matched, we also reimburse out of pocket expenses for travel, refreshments and agreed activities.
Please note, this is an unpaid voluntary role. Two references are required and an enhanced DBS check will be processed for successful applicants.

About The Role
Our centre offers a selection of spaces for hire that are great venues for corporate meetings, team away days and other events, and all profit from these goes directly to our global and national conservation projects.
In this role, you will be providing essential behind-the-scenes support for our friendly staff team to generate income for our conservation work by assisting with day-to-day administration, dealing with telephone enquiries, helping to promote our services to potential clients, making bookings, keeping our electronic systems up-to-date and providing clients with information.
- Dealing with telephone and email enquiries for bookings
- Filing hard copies of bookings
- Dealing with visitors enquiries and liaising with the appropriate staff member
- Checking voicemails and taking appropriate action
- Assisting with general administration
- Researching the internet for specific tasks
- Helping with basic set-up for events
- Assisting with stock take and inventory
- Ad hoc help to meet and greet the guests during events
- Providing information on WWT Llanelli facilities and daily activities, so that all visitors receive accurate and relevant information to enhance their visit
