Remote Volunteer Roles

At Atomic Academia, we are seeking passionate individuals with a strong interest in research, innovation, technology, or expertise in any specialised field to help us review and evaluate content for publication.

As a volunteer, you will primarily interact online through Å—our website platform.

Additionally, we have an online gallery, and we're looking for volunteers to assist with curating the IOA online catalogue.

What we're looking for:

Someone to plan and organise our group fundraising events in the area. There are also opportunities to organise the raffle at regular group events and find local sponsorship.

The skills you need:

Ideas for raising funds! Also friendly and keen to help save nature.

Our groups are entirely volunteer run and led. They are in the front line of engagement with local people, with an extensive programme of walks, talks, day trips and indoor meetings for the group and members of the public. We're looking for people who are passionate about connecting people with nature and helping in the smooth running of the group. By becoming part of the group, you'll have the chance to use your existing skills (and learn new ones) to build the group and make it an ever more important aspect of local RSPB connections with people. The roles available will depend on the group and can include:

• Publicity and / or social media
• Website editor
• Helping with organising and running events

Being a community group, you'll also have the opportunity to make new friends, have fun, and know you are enthusing people about the joys of nature. All you need is a willingness and ability to help with one or more of the varied activities of our RSPB groups, and able to give a minimum of a few hours each month. Notes: This opportunity is not based on a reserve and may not include practical conservation work. It is also not suitable for work experience. However it can usually be customised to your skills, experience and requirements depending on your situation.

We're looking for someone to help with planning, developing and sharing articles, news and stories from the group's activities and the RSPB, as well as drafting media releases for us.

PLANNING

1. Help establish a programme of talks for September to May (excluding December) using speakers recommended by the RSPB. A list of speakers and where they are based is available online via the RSPB. List of speakers for the year ahead should be ready for the printing of a leaflet in late November. Seek approval from the Committee for the programme and seek their suggestions for future meetings. Some speakers may provide talks on Zoom as a preference and these may be booked for the winter months, to provide group members with different media.

2. Contact speakers to carry out talks who meet the following criteria: • Good public speaker • Strong photographic background • Has own laptop and projector or can use PowerPoint style presentation. • Lives within reasonable travelling distance • Whose fees and expenses are acceptable to the Committee.

3. Confirm in writing or by email the arrangements made and obtain mobile phone number to be used in emergencies. Explain car parking arrangements.

4. Notify the Treasurer of the fee to be paid.

5. Contact the speaker two weeks in advance of the meeting to make any last-minute arrangements. PREPARATION:

6. Book room at the venue.

7. Arrange and confirm dates and arrangements made with speakers.

8. Ensure that the equipment (namely sound system, laptop and projector), is working and to arrange maintenance / repairs when required.

9. Have available at all meetings at least one suitable DVD to be used in the unlikely event of a speaker failing to attend.

10. Provide the newsletter editor and WEB organiser with a brief write up of the talks with details of the subject and speaker.

RUNNING THE MEETING

1. Arrange chairs and tables
2. Set up the screen, projector table and any extension leads required.
3. Ensure that any cables across the floor are taped down to avoid trips.
4. Put out signs to say where the meeting is.
5. Adjust the heating / ventilation of room as necessary
6. Arrange for someone to dim the lights at the appropriate time.
7. Agree with the speaker an appropriate time for refreshments.
8. Introduce the speaker, giving brief details of background and experience.
9. Ensure that the second half of the meeting starts promptly.
10. At the end of the meeting give a vote of thanks to the speaker.

FOLLOWING THE MEETING

1. Obtain from the Treasurer a cheque for the speaker’s fee and give this to him / her at the end of the meeting.
2. Ensure that all furniture is tidied.
3. Check for any lost property.
4. Take equipment away from the room.
5. Check that lights and appliances have been switched off and the doors are closed.

NEWSLETTER and PROGRAMME Liaise with the newsletter editor re: deadlines for newsletter. The programme of events for the year ahead is printed in December.

We need someone to lead a group of enthusiastic people who are passionate about supporting the RSPB and exploring local wildlife. The group runs a full programme of activities, from outdoor walks and indoor talks to fundraising events. As the group leader, you will primarily lead the group and oversee things. You will be part of a friendly and helpful committee that share the same vision of bringing people closer to nature. This role offers a fantastic opportunity to use your leadership skills to make a valuable contribution to the work of the RSPB.

Can you help run our social media accounts, particularly Facebook?

What you will be doing

• Drafting press releases in a casual and inspiring language, for local newspapers and other PR channels.
• Obtaining the correct permissions to share stories, names and photography.
• Communicate regularly with other members of the group, such as the Newsletter Editor, regarding timelines and upcoming updates and activities worth including.

This is a fantastic role to get involved locally and be at the forefront of solutions to help save nature in your community. It is an opportunity to try new things and use your skills to make a valuable contribution to the work of your RSPB Local Group. We are a friendly and supportive team, so you will get the chance to build new relationships and meet new faces.

You will be leading the group in developing a range of activities designed to encourage wide participation from the group membership and to attract new group members, as well as heading the committee comprising individuals which assist with the running of the group and the activities which we run. You will have the support of Area/Country offices, and HQ.

The RSPB Cornwall group relaunched in September 2023 as RSPB Kernow Local Group after two years of dormancy. It's early days yet, but the group is hoping to continue the success of those previous years, bringing together all those who love nature, and fostering collaboration with the other great birdwatching groups in their wonderful county. They are aiming to arrange guided walks, many aimed at newcomers to birdwatching, throughout Cornwall all year round. Indoor meetings (talks) are also planned, predominantly within the Truro area for ease of accessibility. On top of that, a regular newsletter is being drafted to keep everyone in the loop, so watch this space! We now need someone to help look after the money - no experience necessary as full training is available!

RSPB Crawley & Horsham Local Group recently relaunched and the group is hoping to continue the success of those previous years, bringing together all those who love nature, and fostering collaboration with the other great birdwatching groups in the area. We now need someone to help look after the money - no experience necessary as full training is available, as well as a handover with the current treasurer!

We have a very attractive newsletter - issued three times a year - currently based on an RSPB template. We have a number of providers of content, articles and photographs and we want someone who can liaise with them and collate the provided content and run the newsletter - with a steady flow of new ideas.

The newsletter is circulated to our 90 or so members and is much appreciated.

Are you over 18 and living in the UK?

You must be over the 18 years of age and live permanently in the UK.

Do you have a laptop?

A laptop and a quiet space to volunteer is essential.

How much time can you give?

A minimum of 3+ hours per week is required. We are flexible and like to work around you.

Do you like to learn?

We provide training for all volunteers that join us. Our peer support training is CPD accredited.  20-25 hours of volunteering training is required and is self led online.

A bit about this role:

As a charity we can help thousands of cats each year thanks to the generous donations from our supporters. Raising funds is a key role in our charity, helping to raise the vital funds needed to help more cats and kittens in need.

As a fundraising volunteer, we will support you every step of the way to ensure your time at Cats Protection is a positive and rewarding one. Whatever time you can give really does make a big difference We have lots of exciting activities to choose from for example attending a fundraising event, fundraising online, promoting fundraising activities on social media, handling administrative tasks, or contributing to the development of new fundraising ideas. Whatever your skill set, this role could be perfect for you!

What can you expect to be doing?

As a flexible role, you have the choice to be involved in the following:

• face-to-face fundraising – organising or helping with fundraising events, attending supermarket collections and monitoring collection boxes.
• online fundraising – assisting with online appeals, increasing social media engagement to maximise funds raised.
• bringing new ideas! We always love to come up with new ideas to raise funds for cats and we’d love to help bring yours to life.
• engaging with your local branch and Fundraising Hub and feeling like an integral part of the team.

At Cats Protection we believe our volunteers should be happy and confident in their roles. We provide support and guidance from our National Cat Centre and through our regional and local volunteer groups and teams. We offer engaging online and face-to-face training, expenses and have policies and processes to help volunteers get the most out of their time with us.
