Environment Volunteer Roles

- Leading on the organisation of events from concept to completion, including coordinating and supporting the successful delivery of internal or external events. 
- Developing good relationships with local community groups, promoting the activities on offer for young adults and reaching new people to attend them. 
- Developing good relationships with professionals delivering services on behalf of the Committee and the Trust. 
- Leading on event evaluation and encouraging feedback from those taking part in opportunities and activities provided by the Committee.
- Inspiring others to act for nature.
- Talking to members of the public about our #Team Wilder movement and the work of the Trust.
- Working with a diverse range of people across all age groups.
- Setting up display stands, erecting and dismantling WKWT gazebos.

Do you have a skill in identifying and capturing data and trends? Help and assist our teams to undertake, manage and monitor our energy & Water consumption : Helping with meter reads, electricity, gas and water, plotting meter locations on what3words, assisting with meter upgrades (mainly electricity) allowing access and meeting EDF.

Our Waterside Specialists help maintain the sustainability of the waterways by giving higher levels of skills through their volunteering.

Volunteering with the Trust takes on many guises and welcomes people with specialist skills in a wide range of areas from practical to surveying, indoors and out. These skills may include working alongside existing specialists within the Trust or bringing skills that we don’t currently have within our team?

Drop-in roles offers a great way to meet other local Trust volunteers and staff, learn new skills, hear about other volunteer opportunities, or just spend a few hours outdoors improving your local waterway environment.

There are no formal skills required and you have the chance to volunteer across lots of unique and beautiful environments.

Lock keepers have been a fixture on Britain’s canals for hundreds of years and are one of the oldest traditions of the waterways. As ‘the face of the waterway’, modern-day volunteer lock keepers play an integral part in the visitor experience. Their role is to provide a polite and friendly welcome to waterway visitors, assisting boaters through the locks and helping to maintain the area.

It’s a perfect opportunity for those who enjoy working in the outdoors and are perhaps looking for something different to do and want to help support the Canal & River Trust. The key qualities we’re looking for are enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.

Anyone can join as long as you are over the age of 18 and can aim to be available for at a least a day a week. Following appropriate selection, training and induction sessions we expect the role to commence fully around April and run through to October (local variations may apply).

What's in it for you?

What skills are we looking for?

To carry out this role, you’ll ideally have an interest in the waterway and/or the local area, but this is not essential. The most important attributes are an ability to interact with and help others; a friendly manner and the ability to make a good first impression; a hands-on approach and can-do attitude, and flexibility to work on your own or with others. Ideally we are looking for someone who is locally based; and be available to work as part of a team.

Tasks will vary throughout the year, ranging from meadow and ride cutting in the summer to coppicing, tree felling and scrub clearance in the winter along with various construction projects, fencing, pond work and a range of other tasks.  Often the work will involve the use of hand tools, mechanical and powered equipment such as brush-cutters, chainsaws, mowers and tractors on site.

Green Allotments is a charity on a mission to create new allotment sites in England and Wales. 

We are currently looking for lovely volunteers for various roles which are all home-based:

• Social Media Supporters: Share our posts on your socials, less than one hour per week, no long-term commitment. Our easiest and lowest time commitment volunteer role. Great for you if you are new to volunteering or have only just a little time to donate to us.
• Volunteer Desk-based Researchers: Up to 1-2 hrs per week to look up information e.g. we might ask you to look for details about allotments in a given area, we will show you how to do this.
• Occasional professional/specialist micro-volunteers in the areas of Marketing and PR, Human Resources: These are one-off (short) specialist tasks.  We will ask you for advice or signposting on a specialist topic. This role can be tailored to your circumstances to suit you, e.g. by email, phone or zoom.

There are no set hours when volunteering for us and you can turn down anything that you are offered. Obviously, we will treat you with dignity and respect.

We do not anticipate that you will incur expenses in this role. We expect our volunteers to already have an internet connection and be willing to use that as part of their volunteer role with Green Allotments CIO.

(At present we are unable to accept applications from under 18s, although we hope to be able to do so in the future as our charity grows)

What we're looking for:

Someone to plan and organise our group fundraising events in the area. There are also opportunities to organise the raffle at regular group events and find local sponsorship.

Ideas for raising funds! Also friendly and keen to help save nature.
