Youth Helpers work directly with young people in St John Ambulance Badger Setts and Cadet Units. By supporting our Youth Leaders to deliver a sessions across our range of programmes. In this role, you'll support the learning and development of young people into the next generation of health citizens. Youth Helpers also help young people develop their confidence, teamwork skills, self-discipline, and generally encourage them to strive to be the best they can be, as well as supervise and support other adult volunteers in their team.

You’ll get a huge sense of satisfaction and pride delivering an essential service. It’s great for you, great for your community and great for our nation, and it requires only a small commitment of your time. 

Pursuing the role

Successful candidates will need to attend the section nights to assist with delivering an educational program for the Cadets and/or Badger Sections. This may also include attending management meetings to plan activities for the youth of St John.

At St John Ambulance, we are looking to develop our volunteering offer and become an even more integral part of our communities through delivering community first aid and education. 

We need people who have a passion for helping others, care about their communities and want to make a difference, supporting them to become safe and more resilient by sharing your first aid skills and knowledge. As a Community First Aider, you’ll deliver first aid to those in need through local events, as well as provide education to the public so that the ripple effect of First Aid grows.

Through supporting the growth of community partnerships, you will bring people along to our cause, growing our membership and fundraising base and spreading the message that First Aid Saves Lives.

We will make sure you will have access to a proper induction to volunteering with SJA and the training you need for the role you take on. Everyone has hopes, dreams and ambitions, for some of us it is more difficult to turn them into reality. At St Albans Mencap we believe everyone is unique and deserves the chance to reach out and create their own future.

SNAP (Special Needs Activities and Play) is an organisation that offers respite care to children and young people aged 5 to 19 years old, who have learning disabilities of varying severity. Some service users may also have physical or sensory disabilities and/or behaviour that is challenging. We aim to provide stimulating play opportunities and good quality childcare, tailored to meet the needs of children and young adults with special needs.

We run ongoing Saturday clubs during school term-time in both Hemel Hempstead and St Albans, as well as running Playschemes during the Easter, Christmas, Summer, and half term school holidays. Volunteer can choose which of our dates they would like to work, allowing for flexibility around other commitments.

All volunteers are provided with training opportunities to enable us to provide a high standard service. Some of our training opportunities include: Safeguarding, Paediatric First Aid, Epilepsy Awareness and Seizure Response, and Moving & Handling. Our roles will give you the chance to enjoy a variety of challenging and rewarding experiences.  

Being part of the St Albans Mencap team enables you to meet new friends and gain life and work experience in a setting you may currently be unfamiliar with. It can also count towards your Duke of Edinburgh Award and shows commitment to supporting your local community, which ultimately looks great when applying for college, university places, or even a new job.

A unique volunteering opportunity to volunteer at Acorns Three Counties Hospice Garden Fete on Sunday 9th March

At Acorns we provide care and support for life limited or life threatened children and their families. We are a charity, and our fundraising is vital to enable us to continue providing care and support to the children: it costs around £10 million a year to run our care services.

 Various roles available including - supporting running stall and games, serving refreshments and setting up and taking down gazebos.

The event held in the hospice gardens is to welcome the local community into Acorns.
There will be entertainment, stalls and activities 11am – 4pm. Food and refreshments are available. Volunteers are welcome to invite along their family & friends.

A special and exciting celebrity will be in attendance to open the event!

How much time will it take?

10am – 5pm either for the whole event or a few hours - with a variety of roles available 

Parking will be available on site or nearby for volunteers

All volunteers will receive hot drinks free of charge.

As our Arts and Wellbeing volunteer for Touchbase, you’ll be joining Sense’s inclusive National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) programme, which opens a world of creative opportunities for everyone with complex disabilities. You’ll get involved with accessible and creative workshops, events and exhibitions, with the option to set up your own sessions in the future.

This role could be an opportunity for someone with disabilities who is keen to develop skills and take on new responsibilities, while exploring and sharing their passion for Arts and Wellbeing. By participating and expressing yourself, you’ll be demonstrating to others with disabilities to express themselves too.

An Enhanced Disclosure and Baring Service (DBS) check will be required for this role, and our team will guide you through the process.
