Position: Volunteer Urban Ranger
Responsible to: Urban Ranger
Location: Various outdoor spaces across BD3, BD4 and BD5
Hours: Anything from two hours here and there, to two days a week.
Expenses: Travel expenses will be reimbursed for bus tickets, train tickets or car mileage

At Better Place Bradford, our mission is to identify and oversee improvements to local parks and outdoor spaces with the aim of providing a healthier and happier environment for babies, young children and families. We work across larger parks, pocket parks, community centres, streets and green spaces across BD3, BD4 and BD5.
We are seeking an enthusiastic, passionate, and highly motivated individual, who is looking to gain some practical landscape maintenance experience.
As a Volunteer Urban Ranger, you’ll play a vital role in maintaining the upkeep of our sites, regularly checking that each site is safe, inviting, and free from rubbish — noting any issues that arise.
Duties include: Litter clearance, sweeping sand back into the sand pits, weeding, planting, watering plants, affixing signs, checking in on the Little Free Library boxes, strimming, raking leaves, supporting at event days, promoting responsible use and enjoyment of our sites.
This role is for you if you;
- Enjoy being outdoors (in all weather)
- Are not afraid of physical work
- Want to make a difference in your local area
- Are comfortable getting to sites across BD3/BD4/BD5
- Enjoy interacting with members of the public
- Want to gain practical landscape maintenance experience
- Are looking for an intro into the environmental / conservation / ranger sectors

As a Membership and Retail Support Volunteer, you will actively engage with our visitors and encourage them to support WWT as members. Enthusing them with stories of our conservation work and the many benefits of membership, you’ll help us secure the essential support we need to continue our ambitious plans for wetlands conservation. And if you have an eye for something special and can offer excellent customer service to every one of our visitors, even better.
You will also be a support to our retail team and help keep up the great work in offering a wide range of items for them to take home. Experience is always welcomed but not essential as training for this and our membership processes will be provided.
What will you be doing?
- Actively engaging our visitors with our mission to save wetlands for wildlife and people
- Encouraging visitors to become members of WWT, tailoring the benefits to their needs
- Completing memberships accurately on our IT systems and ensuring requirements of the role, such Data Protection compliance, are kept to
- Talking to visitors in the shop and helping with any enquiries they may have
- Getting to know and promoting the star buys and latest in-store products and processing sales
- Helping to keep the shop looking clean, clutter-free and inviting
- Assisting with stock checks
- Refilling counters and helping to create enticing displays
- Any other membership and retail support needed, in keeping with the role

About The Role

By providing an excellent visitor experience as a member of the visitor services team, you will be encouraging our visitors to make the most of their visit to Washington Wetland Centre, and to understand and support our work to save wetlands for wildlife and people.
Volunteers are an essential part of the WWT team. You'll get a warm welcome, including information on training, equipment and anything else you need.

This will mainly involve working in mobile treatment centres or temporary event medical centres.
Successful candidates will be registered registered medical practitioners with the GMC, without cautions or restrictions, and hold a licence to practice outside of an approved practice setting.

The Finance Trustee will participate in all areas of our governance but take a special interest in the financial strategy and governance. They will use their sound financial skills and experience to support the Board’s understanding and interpretation and to ensure legislative compliance. Knowledge of UK wide midwifery provision would also be an advantage but not essential.
The Finance Trustee will support the Board to oversee the financial matters of the charity in line with good practice, the Articles of Association and legal requirements, The Finance Trustee will ensure that effective financial measures, controls and procedures are put in place and are appropriate for the charity.
The Finance Trustee should adhere to the role description of a trustee and in addition has the following key responsibilities:

To support the Board to oversee and to ensure appropriate presentation of budgets, accounts, management accounts and financial statements.

To ensure appropriate presentation of accounts and records, ensuring that financial resources are spent in accordance with the charity’s policies, good governance, legal and regulatory requirements.

Liaising, where applicable, with the Chair or other appropriate members of staff and supporting on financial matters

Supporting the Board to monitor the financial viability of the charity.

Creating in conjunction with relevant trustees and staff sound financial processes and procedures for the control of the charity’s assets.

Advising on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plan.

Reviewing the annual accounts are, where applicable, liaising with the charity’s external bookkeeper to ensure the accounts are compliant with the current charities’ SORP.

Liaison with the fund manager responsible for the charity’s investment portfolio - we are currently working towards an ethical investment portfolio and the Finance Trustee is leading on this

Oversight of payroll, HMRC reporting and operation of auto-enrolment pension scheme for all members of staff

The Finance Trustee will need to attend the following meetings (all meetings with the exception of the October AGM/Board meeting are held online)
2 Board meetings (March and October - which is the AGM/Board meeting)
1 business meeting held in the summer
3 Finance sub committee meetings held approximately 10 days before the Board/Business meetings
The Finance Trustee also sits on the newly established Fundraising Sub Committee (meeting schedule to be agreed).
