The Afghanistan and Central Asian Association (ACAA) is looking for enthusiastic volunteer ESOL teachers to support refugees and asylum seekers.
Who we are:
ACAA works to empower and support refugees and asylum seekers by providing vital services that enable successful integration. These include English classes, mentoring, drop-in advice sessions, a legal surgery, employment and education training, counter-extremism workshops and youth and women's engagement services.
Role Summary:
Working as part of a small dynamic ESOL teaching team, responsibility for lesson planning and delivery will be shared between yourself and more experienced teachers. You will have the opportunity to shadow teachers and gain practical teaching experience before leading lessons. This is alongside training sessions for CPD (continued professional development), as you progress in the position you will take on more responsibility and develop your role. Classes meet both in-person and online and all days of the week (except Sunday), meaning you can teach any day that fits your schedule.

Community Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers (CARAS) is a registered charity that has been supporting refugees and asylum-seekers since 2002 empowering them to integrate and engage in the local community.

About Youth ESOL:
Our award-winning ESOL project offers English language classes to young people at a wide range of levels. This provides vital skills, opportunities and social contact and is crucial for enabling young people to do well at school or college.
About the Role:
CARAS is looking for volunteer ESOL Teaching Assistants to support our face-to-face study programme called ‘Get Ready for School.’
This programme is attended by young people out of education and is based in Tooting on Mondays and Wednesdays. Core delivery of the programme includes English, Maths, Digital skills, complemented by Reading and Writing for Pleasure.
Volunteers in this role are required to commit to at least one 2-hour session per week, during these times:

Monday 9:30 am to 3pm

Wednesday 12:30 to 6pm
Please note that ESOL classes do not run during school holidays, and we follow Wandsworth Council term dates.
Volunteer Tasks and Responsibilities:

Providing learners with one-to-one or small group support within ESOL classes;

Help young people to build confidence in digital literacy;
-
Helping to set up the classroom and provide learners with classroom resources;
-
Engaging learners in informal conversations or games during breaks to help them practice their conversational English.

Checking the session plan aims with the lead teacher and assisting learners achieve them;
-
Attending and contributing to volunteer debriefs after each session;

Making use of any community languages you may know to help students during the class;

Working collaboratively as a team and helping to shape the project;

Supporting people to develop their knowledge and skills, encouraging and inspiring participants to reach their full potential;

Assisting participants to recognise and celebrate their achievements;

Requirements:
Essential

To be 18 years or older;

Able to travel to our community centre in Tooting (travel and food expenses can be reimbursed);

Excellent communication skills, especially with people who are new to English;

The ability to volunteer on Monday mornings and Wednesday afternoons/evenings during Wandsworth term time for a minimum of four months;

Currently resident in the UK; has asylum seeker or refugee status

Able to provide five years’ worth of addresses, and willing to undergo a DBS check (DBS and proof of residency is not necessary if you are a Caras community member who is more recently arrived in the UK);

Able to attend volunteer induction training (online) prior to start of role

○ Plan and oversee the proposal development process, working closely with the academic team to collate relevant planning and impact information for proposal narrative, and with the finance team to prepare budget requirements.
○ Ensure proposals are written in line with the relevant proposal guidelines.
○ Submit grant applications.
- Donor Relations:
○ Act as the main point of contact for trusts, foundations, institutions and other funding bodies.

We are looking for inspirational role models who will tutor Maths or English on one of our school programmes across London.You will be matched with a small number of pupils and provide them with the academic support, encouragement and inspiration they need to get back on track. Practical Considerations:
- You can choose a programme that suits your timetable and location.
- Sessions are between 60-90 minutes and will take place on a fixed day of the week, normally at the end of the school day (between 3-5pm).
- Each programme runs across a 12 week period, usually during term time. You will be expected to volunteer for at least one programme (10-12 weeks).
- Team Up provides full lesson plans and teaching resources.
- This role requires you to undergo a free of charge DBS check, which will be arranged by Team Up.

Bookmark Reading Volunteers directly support children who are at risk of leaving primary school unable to read well. Struggling to read can contribute to poor educational attainment, lower literacy in adulthood and has even been linked to a lower life expectancy. You can help ignite the joy of reading and change a child’s story.
In this volunteer role, you’ll have 30-minute one-to-one reading sessions on 2 days per week. This is across 6 weeks with a child aged between 5 and 11 years old. Each session will involve reading stories and playing literacy games on our secure online platform or face-to-face. You’ll book your reading programme through Bookmark’s Volunteer Hub and select sessions on days and times that work with your commitments.

We are looking for editors, proofreaders, and typists to support young people's stories!
You do not have to be a published writer, just have lots of enthusiasm for creative writing and young people. Super Power Agency volunteers come from every walk of life. Some want to give back to their local community, others want to gain experience in publishing and some just want to help out!
All of the work our young writers do is published into a book of some form.
If you’d like to be involved but find it difficult during typical school hours, then the Extraordinary League of Editors, Proofreaders, Helpers And Nifty Typists (E.L.E.P.H.A.N.T.) might be the editing collective for you! This is back-end remote volunteering, and is integral to publishing the young writers’ work.
The writing is split up into batches, each taking approximately one hour, and you are welcome to do as many or as few as your schedule allows!

Read Easy provides free, confidential, one to-one reading coaching for adults who struggle with reading, through a network of volunteer groups. Read Easy groups are changing the lives of individual adults across the country by providing them with the support they need to learn to read, and in turn opening doors for them to all sorts of new opportunities in life. Outline of the Coordinator role
The Coordinator is the first point of contact for those who want to learn to read. Using a simple assessment, the Coordinator will explain to a potential new ‘Reader’ how Read Easy may be able to help them. The Coordinator pairs up new Coaches with those who want to learn to read and provides ongoing support to these reading pairs. They visit reading sessions occasionally and maintain support through regular calls with both Reader and Coach to check all is going well, calling on the group’s Literacy Specialist to respond to any literacy related difficulties a pair may be having. Being a Read Easy Coordinator is very flexible. You decide how much time you have to offer, and this will determine the number of reading pairs you look after. The role provides lots of variety, is home-based and can work well around other commitments.
How we will support you
You will be provided with the Coordinator Handbook, training, induction, policies, resources and guidance specifically needed for this role, including access to support from a Read Easy UK Regional Adviser. In addition, the Coordinator Supporter will meet with you regularly to provide support and find out how your Reading Pairs are getting on. You will be invited to Read Easy UK’s volunteer forums and National Conference which gives volunteers an opportunity for networking with those from other groups.
What you will be doing:
● Help interview new Coaches when recruited and shortlisted by the Volunteer Recruiter.
● Enrol and assess new Readers, using the simple resources provided.
● Match Readers with Coaches, make introductions, and help them organise their reading sessions (which will take place in an approved venue or online).
● Visit your reading pairs to provide encouragement, presenting certificates on occasion.
● Work collaboratively with any other Coordinators in the group.
● Contribute to Coach meetings where volunteers discuss their experiences and receive further support. (Run by the Management Team typically every 8 weeks.)
● Attend Management Team meetings when invited, typically every 6-8 weeks either in person or remotely.
● Record progress of your reading pairs using resources provided, sharing these with the Management Team to keep them fully informed and submit expenses for payment egularly.
The skills you will need:
● A passion for supporting others achieve either their reading or coaching goals;
● A willingness to become familiar with the methods of the phonics based Turning Pages coaching manuals, so that you can confidently guide others;
● Good communication and people skills, with a commitment to maintaining confidentiality. Strong organisational, time management and record keeping skills;
● Self-awareness, personal responsibility and a professional approach;
● Reasonable confidence in using IT(accessing documents, completing electronic forms and records, email, Teams/Zoom meetings);
● The ability to use initiative and willingness to work independently and as part of a team;
● A willingness to abide by Read Easy policies and procedures;

Outline: Organise a team of volunteers to plan and deliver the Squirrels Programme. Empowering young people to learn new skills, make new friends and learn to stand on their own two feet. No two weeks are the same, but the impact you make is always great.
Responsible to: Group Scout Leader
Responsible for: Young Leaders whilst they are working in the Section
Main Contacts: Young people and their Parents/Carers, Drey team members, Group Scout Leader, Beaver Leaders, Assistant District Commissioner (Squirrels), Group Treasurer
Appointment Requirements:
- Complete the appointment process (including acceptable personal enquiries and acceptance of the Scout Association's policies).
- It's expected that whilst volunteering for this role you will undertake regulated activity and require a disclosure check to be completed.
- Within five months of starting the role, complete applicable Getting Started training modules, which cover Essential Information, Safety, Safeguarding and GDPR.
- Continue the Scout training programme to achieve the Wood Badge within three years.
- Renew safeguarding and safety training
- Take part in ongoing learning opportunities.

Main Tasks:
Planning and delivering a great Programme
- Deliver a fun, inclusive and age-appropriate programme
- Make sure activities are safe in accordance with Scouts POR (Policy, Organisation and Rules)
- Encourage Squirrels to participate in activities and guide them towards receiving their badges
- Involve Squirrels with programme planning in an age-appropriate way
- Gather regular feedback from Squirrels about the programme
- Working with the Squirrels and members of the team, deliver a Community Impact project
- Work with Beaver leaders to help Squirrels move-on to the Beaver Colony
Running the section (Squirrel, Beaver Cubs or Scouts section)
- Encourage parents, carers and other adults to help run the section
- Welcome and guide new members
- Recruit and support at least one Young Leader to help run the section
- Share and allocate tasks and agree responsibilities with team members.
- Check in with members of the team regularly to see how things are going
- Keep records of section in accordance with UK Data protection act 2018.
- Maintain good communications with parents/carers of section
- Make sure the section reflects the diversity of the local community
Be a part of the Scout Group
- Attend and contribute to Scout Group leader meetings.
- With support from the Group Treasurer and Group Scout Leader, make sure all financial procedures are followed.
- On behalf of the section team, attend meetings with other section leaders organised by the Scout District.

About CARAS:
Community Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers (CARAS) is a charity that supports refugees and people seeking asylum who live in south London, helping them to play their full part in the community. We offer a range of individual and group support to improve the holistic wellbeing of people who have a background of forced migration, providing them with tools to build lives filled with value, meaning and purpose in the UK. Our activities for adults currently include: ESOL classes (English for Speakers of Other Languages), a creative writing workshop, drama group, yoga and gardening project.
About the CARAS ESOL Team:
COVID has posed unprecedented challenges to refugees and people seeking asylum in London. Many of those we meet have arrived alone in the UK and have been living in contingency accommodation for many months. Our ESOL team offer English language classes to adults at a wide range of levels. This provides vital skills, opportunities and social contact and is crucial for enabling people to attend college and access other services in the future.
About the Role:
CARAS is looking for volunteer ESOL Teaching Assistants to support our online Zoom classes on Monday mornings:
Adult ESOL Speaking & Listening at Entry 2+ Level: 11.30am to 1pm (plus a 15-minute debrief)
Please note that ESOL classes do not run during school holidays, and we follow Wandsworth Council term dates.
As a volunteer ESOL Teaching Assistant your role is flexible and varied. It will involve supporting the Adult ESOL Teacher in the delivery of online Zoom classes, as well as providing learners with one-to-one or small-group support.
Volunteer tasks and responsibilities:
Providing learners with one-to-one or small group support within ESOL classes;
Helping learners build confidence in digital literacy;
Attending and contributing to volunteer debriefs after each session;
Making use of any community languages you may know to help students during the class;
Working collaboratively as a team and helping to shape the lessons;
Supporting people to develop their knowledge and skills, encouraging and inspiring participants to reach their full potential;
Following CARAS’ confidentiality, safeguarding, health & safety, equal opportunities, data management, online communications and all other policies as relevant.
Requirements:
Essential:
To be 18 years or older;
An interest in education and English language teaching;
To be non-judgemental and able to engage with people from diverse cultural backgrounds;
To be reliable and punctual;
Excellent communication skills, especially with people with varying levels of English;
The ability to volunteer on Tuesday mornings during Wandsworth term time for a minimum of three months;
Currently resident in the UK;
Able to provide five years’ worth of addresses, and willing to undergo a DBS check;
Able to attend compulsory volunteer induction training (online) general and safeguarding prior to start of role
Desirable:
Knowledge of community languages, such as (including Arabic, Tigrinya, Amharic, Pashto, Dari, Farsi, Kurdish, Somali and Spanish).
