Trustee with experience in Major Capital Developments
About Wonderseekers
Wonderseekers is a children’s charity that uses science engagement to empower children to improve lives and protect and heal our planet. Its purpose is to raise children’s aspirations and confidence when it comes to big topics such as climate change, as well as promoting diversity and inclusion, so that all children have the ambition and freedom to improve their own lives, the lives of others and ultimately life on Earth.
Set up in 1986, and renamed as Wonderseekers in 2022, the Charity has always focused on delivering hands-on science experiences for young children. Through fun, immersive and accessible experiences in schools, communities, online and at its science and discovery centre in Winchester, the Charity is able to spark curiosity when it comes to science. As part of it’s For People and Planet strategy, launched in 2023, it will continue to use these interactive science experiences to positively engage children, through all disciplines of science, with the natural world to enable them to take action against climate change.
The Role
To deliver our new strategy and exciting capital and activity Masterplan, the Charity is looking to strengthen our Board with an individual who can bring their skills and experience within the area of Major Capital Development.
Wonderseekers has a clear and important mission - to create a more equitable world where all children can treasure science and are equipped and empowered to improve lives and protect and heal our planet. Our strategy, For People and Planet 2030, sets out a clear vision for Wonderseekers and the outcomes we want to influence for children and nature. The impact we already have is hugely significant but we know through the delivery of this ambitious strategy and masterplan, we can do so much more. If you share our values, ambition and commitment to our Charity’s mission, we would love to hear from you.
We value diversity amongst our Board of Trustees and the unique contribution trustees bring to the role through their own lived, loved, laboured and learned experiences. As well as ensuring the Board has the necessary business skills required to effectively govern the Charity, we also seek to represent the audiences we serve across all levels of our organisation.
Our Board of Trustees provides strategic leadership and governance to the Charity to ensure we achieve what we set out to do effectively and always in line with ‘Our promise to children’ and regulatory obligations.
We are offering you a unique and rewarding experience. You will have a key impact on our Charity’s mission, oversee our strategic vision, influence future projects and help manage risk.
You will bring your experience and knowledge in one of the key skills areas to advise the Senior Leadership Team and set the future direction of our Charity.
Thank you for your interest in becoming a trustee of Wonderseekers, and we look forward to receiving your application soon!

You will be expected to attend at least four board meetings per year. We also hold an annual strategy day usually in September. In addition you will also sit on at least one committee. Committees generally meet up to four times per year. Meetings are between one and three hours and a hybrid option is usually available. Additional time for reviewing papers and building relationships with the senior management team as required should also be factored in. There may also be opportunities to attend special events.
You may find it useful to look at the guidance on Trustees from the Charity Commission "The Essential Trustee"

Prison Bike Workshop Volunteer
Do you have a passion for bikes? Could you use your bike maintenance skills to help prisoners turn their lives around?
We’re looking for people with competent bike maintenance skills to volunteer on our Bikes Beyond Bars programme.
About this role
As a volunteer, you’ll work alongside prison-based bike maintenance course participants, helping them refurbish a wide range of donated bikes. Working at our workshops at HMP Bristol or HMP Fosse Way, you’ll help residents to develop cycle maintenance skills and earn a professional Cytech qualification. These new skills will equip them for better job opportunities upon release.
You’ll support our dedicated Prison Bike Mechanic Tutors, providing hands-on assistance in the workshop and making a meaningful impact on the participants’ journey toward rehabilitation. This is a great opportunity for those who enjoy working with people from all walks of life and want to use their bike know-how to help make a real difference in their community.
"Life Cycle helped me massively in prison, keeping me occupied and out of the cell… I contacted Life Cycle when I was released because I wanted to give back something to the people that helped me. I felt respected and treated as a valued member of society, not just an ex-con." – Jon (name changed).
About Life Cycle
Life Cycle is a charity that works with people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds at every stage of their cycling journey, from learning to ride, to building a career in the cycle industry.
In this role, you’ll be working on our Bikes Beyond Bars programme, Life Cycle’s innovative bike recycling project based at HMP Bristol and HMP Fosse Way. Unwanted bicycles are taken to the prisons, where the men learn how to strip down, clean and refit them, giving them a new lease of life.
The bikes are taken to our community Hub in Bristol where they are quality assured ready for sale by Life Cycle’s mechanics and our team of volunteers. Anyone can buy a bike; however, many go to local people on low incomes, enabling them to get a bike and start cycling.
About you
We’re looking for someone with competent bike maintenance skills, who’s confident working on bike refurbishments with light support from our friendly Prison Workshop Tutors. If you’re unsure, please feel free to give us a call.
Due to the nature of the role, you must have an open, non-judgmental attitude and believe in the possibility of change for those who’ve been involved in the criminal justice system.
Bikes Beyond Bars wouldn’t be possible without our amazing volunteers! So, if you enjoy meeting people from all walks of life and you’re enthusiastic about Life Cycle’s charitable mission, we’d love to hear from you.

About The Bike Project
The Bike Project matches newly arrived refugees without the means or money to get around with the thousands of abandoned bikes in the UK. We’ve been doing this since 2013 and remain focused on ensuring that refugees and people seeking asylum can save money, feel more connected to their community and lead happier and healthier lives.
Why a bike matters - Most people seeking asylum in the UK are not allowed to work and instead receive an allowance of less than £50 per week to live on. If housed in a place where meals are provided, they get even less – only £8.86 per week. People need to travel regularly to get to Home Office or solicitor appointments and to access other vital services - but travel is expensive. With a typical bus pass costing £20 per week many are forced to make impossible choices. A donated bike can be truly transformative for someone in this situation - it provides a free, sustainable mode of transport, but moreso, it can enable a sense of connection, independence and joy.
The Opportunity
The Bike Project is recruiting four dedicated and dynamic individuals to join the Partnerships and Development Board. We are looking for contributors with a strong commitment to The Bike Project's vision, mission, and values, and excellent communication and interpersonal skills, in line with the strategy agreed by the board.
This is an opportunity to leverage your expertise and engage your networks to guide the organization’s partnerships, expand its reach, and support fundraising efforts, contributing to the charity’s long-term growth and success.
Ideally the candidate will have experience in at least one of the following areas:
- Retail or professional services
- Media, digital, marketing
- The bike industry
- CSR/ESG experience
- Access to an engaged network
- Lived experience of being a refugee in the UK
Together, we can empower refugees with the freedom and independence of a bicycle.
We particularly encourage applications from disabled, and global majority candidates, and those who have personal experience of being a refugee or the asylum system.
Please submit your CV and a short cover letter explaining your interest in the role and what you hope to contribute.
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.
