Job description

The AAGBI Foundation is seeking to appoint two lay trustee members to its Board of Trustees

The Association of Anaesthetists (the Association) is the professional membership organisation for anaesthetists in the UK, Ireland, and across the globe. With over 10,000 members, our mission is to safeguard patients by educating, supporting, and inspiring every anaesthetist throughout their career, enabling them to provide the best care in every healthcare setting. Our four strategic priorities are Patient Care and Safety, Education and Research, Advocacy and Support, and Innovation and Growth.

Our values are embedded in everything we do. We are:

  • Committed: We are a respected and independent organisation, committed to speaking up and speaking out on behalf of our members and the anaesthesia community
  • Trusted: For over 90 years, we have helped to set standards, share knowledge, and support thousands of people in a vital profession. Our expertise matters to our members and globally
  • Innovative: We look forward, not back. We care about the future of anaesthesia and actively help shape its future on behalf of our members by listening, responding, and innovating
  • Connected: We are a dynamic, diverse, and inclusive community. We exist because of, and on behalf of, our members

Launched in 2024, the Association strategy 2024 to 2029 sets out in detail the vision, mission, and values of the Association and our strategic priorities for the next five years.

About the Foundation

The AAGBI Foundation (the Foundation) is the registered charity of the Association and a company limited by guarantee. The two legal entities are separate but operate under one brand identity as the Association of Anaesthetists. (The Association is currently implementing the recommendations of a recent governance review which will simplify the current legal set up).

The Board of Trustees is the governing body of the charity. The Board oversees strategy, annual business plans, and budgets, working with the Chief Executive Officer and senior management team, who are responsible for operational delivery. The Board of Trustees is advised on charitable governance by the Chief Executive Officer and by specialist professional advisors when required.

For further information on the Foundation see the latest Foundation Statutory Report and Accounts.

About the lay trustee role

Following the successful implementation of our strategy to engage lay trustees with our Board and committees, the Foundation is now seeking to appoint two new lay members to its Board of Trustees.

We are seeking two lay trustees to enhance the breadth of knowledge and expertise on our Board. We are actively seeking individuals with expertise in areas such as:

  • business and finance
  • charity law and governance
  • company law and regulation
  • cyber security and risks, data structure and management
  • IT and digital transformation
  • fundraising
  • organisational development and HR

As lay trustee members they would also join the Board of Directors of the Association as a non-voting member, and be a co-opted member of the Council, which acts as an advisory group to the board.

The deadline for applications is 17:00 on Friday 19 July 2024. Expressions of interest are invited via a letter and CV to the Chief Executive Officer, Nicky de Beer. Your application should address the role description and person specification.

Following an initial short-listing process interviews will be held in London on Friday 2 August 2024.

This role is advertised as part of TPP's Free Giving Back Services. This volunteer advertisement copy has been supplied to TPP and applicants apply direct to the organisation. Please contact the organisation directly if you have any questions about this volunteer role.
