Human Rights Volunteer Roles

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Faith to Faithless, an inspiring section of Humanists UK that raises awareness of apostasy and supports those who have left a religion in the UK.

After launching our dedicated helpline for the ex-religious, we have found that we are receiving a growing number of people registering for peer support. As a result we are expanding our volunteer team.

When a person contacts us and says they would like to attend an event of ours, they fill in a registration form and then they will have a ‘Safety Chat’. This is an informal online video chat with a member of staff or a trained volunteer. The Safety Chat Facilitator will explain how the services work and answer any questions the applicant may have. It is also an opportunity to make sure we are keeping the service safe for all of our service users. You will be checking to see if the person is appropriate for our services, and that our services are appropriate for them.

The Safety Chat Facilitators engage in the most important role within Faith to Faithless. They are the first point of contact for all of our service users, and they may well be the first person that an ex-religious person has ever spoken to about leaving religion. These conversations can be emotionally challenging due to discussing difficulties experienced when leaving religion, but they tend to be quite joyful too, as the ex-religious person is learning that there is a whole community of support available and friends to be made.

Plateful cafe is a refugee social-enterprise cafe based in Lewisham; we often operate at local markets too. This role involves managing our market stall, sales, and handmade produce at events.

What will you be doing?

As Volunteer Assistant Trading Manager, you will oversee the sales of our market stall - featuring produce made by our talented refugee chefs. Your primary responsibilities will include managing the overall market stall operations (from setup to takedown), ensuring a seamless and efficient process. You will engage with potential customers, explain our unique products, address enquiries, and actively promote sales. This role demands strong leadership skills, strategic planning, and a proactive approach to enhancing customer engagement and sales performance.

About the Chair Role:

The Chair will be taking on this pivotal role at a crucial time in Migrant Help's growth and development as an organisation. About the role

​

To mentor clients in creative writing sessions (one to one and group workshop) at Write to Life, the creative writing group at Freedom from Torture. Write to Life is a unique group working with survivors of torture. Over the past 25, years it has supported hundreds of survivors, all clients and former clients, many of whom have become published writers and assured performers at festivals, fundraisers and public events. Nurturing their talent in a third or fourth language, watching it blossom and with it, their confidence and self-belief, is a constant inspiration.

Although primarily a writing group, that writing has taken many forms, from film to musical narrative to theatre and song. We have collaborated on creative projects with the Roundhouse, Kings Place, Tate Gallery, Victoria and Albert and British Museums, NWLive Arts, Ice & Fire and Tamasha Theatre, among others.

Freedom from Torture aims to be a survivor-focused and led organisation, and we particularly encourage minoritized people and those with lived experience of the asylum system to apply.

Main Responsibilities:

​

- To participate in fortnightly workshops on Wednesday evenings at Freedom from Torture’s offices in Finsbury Park (17.30-20.00).

- To take on one or two clients for one-to-one writing sessions (fortnightly), ideally on the same day, before the workshop.

- To check FFT emails every Wednesday, including non workshop Wednesdays, and respond in a reasonably timely manner.

- To devise and run 2-3 writing workshops a year, both general creative writing and specific to the aims and programme of Freedom from Torture.

- To attend Write to Life mentors’ meetings (every 6 weeks before workshop).

- (Optional) in rotation with other mentors to co-edit with a group member the annual Write to Life Zine which is co-produced and designed with the whole group.

- (Optional) to participate in occasional events (fundraisers, festivals and parties).

Applicants should be published writers in some form (novels, plays, poetry), and have experience with vulnerable populations, ideally as a writing teacher.

What will you be doing?

We want individuals who are passionate about social justice and believe in the right of displaced and persecuted peoples to seek asylum in the UK. Your sense of fairness and empathy is much more important than any professional background you have. In fact, if you are keen to learn and support our staff team in a particular area of our work, we are happy to support you in developing new skills and an understanding of the asylum system in the UK.

If you are new to being a Trustee, we will give you plenty of support and training and there are plenty of resources we can point you to too. 

Our Trustees meet all together 4 times a year (either virtually or in person) for Trustees’ meetings, plus we have an annual general meeting every year.

Our Trustees also take part in sub-groups such as the Finance sub-group, and some take on a governance responsibility like Chair, Treasurer or Secretary, or support an area of work such as hosting or advice or communications etc.

We estimate there are 100 destitute asylum seekers living in Bristol, caught in the loopholes of the system – unable to work and unable to claim benefits. Without an income, these individuals can’t find accommodation. This is an opportunity for the Trustee to join an organisation which extends solidarity to people seeking asylum and experiencing destitution through accommodation and creative community involvement. By joining us as a Trustee, you will help BHN continue its work in benefit of all its members.

Action Syria works with local partners to make sure Syrian communities have the medical care and education they need, every day, and when emergencies strike. Our vision is one where Syrians can build their lives with health, opportunity and hope. Action Syria is looking for a new Board Chair to lead our dedicated and skilled Board of Trustees. Role: Trustee, in particular trustees with a legal or HR background. 

Remuneration: This is an unpaid role, reasonable out of pocket expenses will be covered. 

Duration: Trustees stand for terms of three years, with the chance to be re-elected for a further two consecutive terms of three years.

Time commitment: We estimate the equivalent of 5 hours’ time commitment per quarter. The full Board meets once each quarter for an average of 2 hours.

Location: London, although the majority of our board meetings are hybrid meetings with options to join remotely.

What does the role of Trustee look like?

The role of Trustee is a rewarding, engaging, decision making one where you get to make a real difference, using your skills and experience to help our charity create as much impact as we can. 

You will join a dedicated board of trustees who are ultimately responsible for the governance and finances of the charity, working together to make sure that the charity’s resources are used effectively to achieve its aims. 

Board meetings allow the trustees to come together to fulfill their legal obligations, as stated in the Memorandum and Articles of Association. We don’t expect you to necessarily be familiar with the  ins and outs of these obligations - we will provide you with support and training to navigate your responsibilities. The CEO and Executive Team are responsible for updating and providing the necessary information to the trustees to enable them to make their decisions. 

Trustees are not expected to be experts in every aspect of the running of Heard, this is why we have dedicated employees to provide information to the trustees and specialist trustees such as our treasurer who has the financial expertise to guide the trustees when it comes to the accounts. 

Our trustees also have the opportunity to sit on sub-committees depending on their areas of interest. Our sub-committees are currently Social Affairs, Finance and Human Resources.

A lack of access to justice leads to issues of poverty, homelessness, ill health, unemployment, and many other social and personal difficulties. Our partner provides funding and support for access to crucial legal advice and representation.

They are seeking a new Treasurer, who will play a key role in the oversight and strategic execution of their finances and governance during an exciting period of organisational growth and development.

They are seeking a qualified accountant, with an understanding of and commitment to the organisation's vision, mission, and objectives, as well as strong financial acumen with demonstrable experience of applying this in a leadership role.

Apply to be a trustee with Scottish Child Law Centre 

We are looking for new trustees to complement our existing board to ensure the centre is fully supported and we can take our work forward effectively. 

The role is voluntary. Reasonable travel expenses will be covered where required.

The Scottish Child Law Centre

The Scottish Child Law Centre has been providing free expert legal advice and training on children’s rights and child law across Scotland for 32 years. We focus on those who need us most to:

· Deliver free and confidential legal advice to children and young people and those who care for and support them

· Educate and inform children and young people and those who support them of their rights

· Influence legal, systemic and policy change using the data and evidence gathered from delivering advice and training

The Centre is going through an exciting period of transition, and over the next 2 years we will be building on our services provision, including outreach work, advice, and training. We work co-productively alongside those that we exist to support to design services to reach those who need us most.

With the recent incorporation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, this is an exciting time to help realise children's rights, and we are looking for new trustees to help support the Centre achieve its vision for all children and young people growing up in Scotland to have their rights respected, protected, and fulfilled.

We have a large collection of books in our unique library, much of it donated by members of the community.

We are looking for a responsible someone with the knowledge, skills and experience to repair/restore some old/damaged books, including reattach pages (Hard and soft cover books)

The work can be done in our premises or from home.

New ideas and creativity welcome to showcase and promote Plateful Cafe.

Settled currently has vacancies for volunteers in the following roles. Further information about volunteering and any new roles will be on the volunteering page of our website.

• Advice Volunteers for EU citizens, giving advice on the EU Settlement Scheme. We seek volunteers who speak any of these languages: Czech/Slovak, French, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, or Romanian. We also seek volunteers who live in Wales (no specific language requirement for them).
• Complex Case Support Volunteers, working with our senior advisers on more EUSS complex cases. We seek volunteers who already have some experience giving immigration advice.
• Ukraine Advice Volunteers to support our Ukraine visas advice team. We seek volunteers who speak Ukrainian.
• Outreach and Communications Volunteers - to help raise awareness of our work and expand our reach so that we can support more people. 
• Data Volunteers - to assist with outcomes data monitoring, so that we can analyse our caseload and demonstrate the difference that we make.
• Culture Volunteers to help showcase a new ‘Settled Culture‘ website promoting arts and events by, for or about EU citizens.
