Job description

Can you spare some time each month to support one of our schools?

School governors and trustees play a vital role in education.

By volunteering as a governor or trustee for a school or academy trust you can make a difference by shaping the future of children and young people.

Bridge Academy Trust is seeking new members to join its board of governors at our schools in Braintree, Chelmsford, Halstead, Ongar and Witham. We are a collegiate and collaborative Trust of 11 schools, where each school is a place of high quality learning, where young people ENJOY, ENRICH, ACHIEVE, ASPIRE.

What do Governors do?

School governors offer strategic guidance, rather than getting involved in the operational aspects of a school. This involves:

  • Working with other board members to plan the school’s strategic direction.
  • Overseeing the school’s financial performance, ensuring money is well-spent.
  • Holding the headteacher or school leadership to account.

Do I need any qualifications or prior experience?

No special qualifications or experience is needed, and you don’t need to be a parent or education expert to volunteer. Schools require a combination of skills to ensure their boards operate effectively. The most important thing is to have a keen interest in the school and be prepared to play an active part in the governing body’s work.

Will I get any training?

Yes, we will provide you with an induction and ongoing training for your role.

What is the time commitment?

  • Four meetings each academic year (usually during the evening at the school)
  • Attendance at the Trust’s annual Governors’ Conference
  • Occasional additional meetings, as needed.
  • If you are the Chair, you would be required to attend a termly Chairs’ meeting and maintain regular contact with their Headteacher.

Will I get paid?

The Governor role is unremunerated but presents a great opportunity for self-development, provides the opportunity to give something back to the local community and to help children achieve the best education possible.
