Opportunity to join Heard’s Board of Trustees

Would you relish the opportunity to learn how storytelling can drive long-term change in areas including poverty, climate change, trans rights, migration, sexual violence & domestic abuse? We're looking for trustees with legal or HR expertise to help us create impact across all these issues and more. We are looking for candidates who are excited by the opportunity to work with a small and innovative charity and who share our passion for the work. You’d be joining an already incredibly engaged board of a growing organisation. 

Role: Trustee, in particular trustees with a legal or HR background. 

Remuneration: This is an unpaid role, reasonable out of pocket expenses will be covered. 

Duration: Trustees stand for terms of three years, with the chance to be re-elected for a further two consecutive terms of three years.

Time commitment: We estimate the equivalent of 5 hours’ time commitment per quarter. The full Board meets once each quarter for an average of 2 hours.

Location: London, although the majority of our board meetings are hybrid meetings with options to join remotely.

What does the role of Trustee look like?

The role of Trustee is a rewarding, engaging, decision making one where you get to make a real difference, using your skills and experience to help our charity create as much impact as we can. 

You will join a dedicated board of trustees who are ultimately responsible for the governance and finances of the charity, working together to make sure that the charity’s resources are used effectively to achieve its aims. 

Board meetings allow the trustees to come together to fulfill their legal obligations, as stated in the Memorandum and Articles of Association. We don’t expect you to necessarily be familiar with the  ins and outs of these obligations - we will provide you with support and training to navigate your responsibilities. The CEO and Executive Team are responsible for updating and providing the necessary information to the trustees to enable them to make their decisions. 

Trustees are not expected to be experts in every aspect of the running of Heard, this is why we have dedicated employees to provide information to the trustees and specialist trustees such as our treasurer who has the financial expertise to guide the trustees when it comes to the accounts. 

Our trustees also have the opportunity to sit on sub-committees depending on their areas of interest. Our sub-committees are currently Social Affairs, Finance and Human Resources.

General responsibilities of trustees:

• An understanding of and commitment to the values of Heard, and its vision and mission statements.
• Ensure the operational plan and budget reflect the agreed strategic direction and are appropriate.
• To hold the Chief Executive accountable for the achievement of agreed targets and provide them with regular, constructive feedback on both management and overall achievement.
• Support the CEO when requested, sharing expertise, as a member of a working group or in other appropriate ways.
• Agree the charity’s policies and ensure they will assist in the achievement of the strategic and operational plans.
• Ensure the charity has satisfactory financial control systems and procedures in place, and to review the level of risk annually.
• Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of Trusteeship and to reflect annually on the Board’s performance and your own performance as a Trustee.
• Attend quarterly Board meetings, read relevant papers and be prepared to make a contribution, working with fellow Board members as a team.
• Safeguard Heard’s reputation, and other intangible assets. Be prepared to act as a spokesperson for Heard, attending events as an ambassador for Heard, to network and promote the work of the organisation.
• Assist with fundraising by speaking, networking and otherwise seeking business development opportunities in conjunction with the CEO.

Desirable:

We are particularly interested in trustees with HR or legal experience. 

• Prior experience as a Trustee, including understanding of governance, best practice and the legal and regulatory environment in which charities operate.  
• Record of supporting a charity/non-profit organisation, demonstrable understanding of the challenges faced by small charities upscaling their work in the current climate.
• Bringing an established network of contacts who may support our fundraising work.
• Guide and advise other board trustees on the legal requirements for and implications of the charity’s strategic plans
• Experience of performance management, HR/employment law issues and implementing them contextually  
• Able to demonstrate a good understanding of current developments in HR, staff and development training and recruitment

Our fosterers carry out this role with support from their local branch or centre.

Most of our fosterers care for one or two cats at a time and enjoy providing lots of TLC to those cats, who have been pre-loved or have had a difficult start in life. Some of our fosterers look after new mums and kittens and provide round-the-clock care to newborns to give them the best start in life.

Time expectation

• To ensure that the organisation complies with its governing document, community interest company law, and any other relevant legislation or regulations.

• To ensure the organisation applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects (the community interest company must not spend money on activities which are not included in its own objects, no matter how worthwhile or charitable those activities are).
• To contribute actively to the board of trustees' role in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets.

Volunteer Role:

Collection Box Coordinator – 2 hours a week

Why volunteer:

Through volunteering with us you will gain a greater sense of purpose and help with fundraising for Orpheus. You will coordinate the regular collection and replacement of Orpheus donation boxes within the local area and liaise with other volunteers to inform them which boxes need collecting. You will also need to maintain our database, inputting current and new locations, reporting stolen or broken boxes, researching new locations to distribute boxes and inform the Community Fundraiser.

This role would suite someone who is self-motivated, have a confident manner and experience of dealing with the public face-to-face. Experience using excel spreadsheets or databases would be beneficial, however we can provide training if necessary. You’ll need to be reliable, an excellent communicator, have a friendly and enthusiastic personality and committed to helping. Being a car driver will help you within this role.

You will have a mentor who will help and guide you when you first start volunteering at Orpheus.

Training:

Role relevant training, including Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and Safeguarding will be given prior to start date. There is also the opportunity to attend our Learning Support training.

Job Purpose

One Place London is located in West London and is a community interest company engaged in Acting for Film and Music Recording workshops for young people aged 14-25, unemployed or at risk of getting involved in crime. As a key member of the Engagement Team working at Cedars Youth & Community Centre, Chicheley Road, HA3 6QH, this post will work alongside the Sound Engineer to deliver music recording workshops for young people aged 14-18..

Main Duties & Responsibilities

• At all times work within the One Place London.

• Develop, promote and deliver engaging and relevant social activities and programmes on a daily basis to young people.

• Support, mentor, coach and ‘walk alongside’ individuals in their pursuit of independence and community cohesion.

• Undertake risk assessments and support planning interviews with new residents.

• Develop community minded support and activities that involve the wider community.

• Engage third parties to deliver support and activities to young people.

• To act as an advocate for young people and to engage partner agencies and services appropriate to the young people’s needs.

• Actively encourage job search, training, and volunteering opportunities with young people who are not in education, employment, or training.

• Facilitate the booking and delivery of community-based programmes.

• Assist with the interviewing and selection of those applying for accommodation.

• Undertake risk assessments and support planning with young people.

Qualifications and Experience:

• Demonstrable experience of programme delivery in youth, adult or community-based service

At Acorns we provide care and support for life limited or life threatened children and their families. We are a charity, so most of the care that we provide is funded through fundraising and through our shops.

To help us to continue to provide the care that we do, we are looking for fun and enthusiastic volunteers to join us in our Bromsgrove shop. Our shops are exciting and dynamic, with no two days being the same. From our walk-in customers, to receiving donations, and everything in between

As a Shop Volunteer with us, you will be:

• Engaging with customers

Organisation overview:

Shelter Housing Advice and Research Project was established in 1974 by Leicester Shelter Group. We provide much-needed advice, help and support for people who have been homeless or facing serious housing problems in the City of Leicester and Leicestershire. We are currently Lottery funded and as part of that we are offering volunteer work placements that will help people to secure paid employment or a route into further education.

At Acorns we provide care and support for life limited or life threatened children and their families. We are a charity, so most of the care that we provide is funded through fundraising and through our shops.

To help us to continue to provide the care that we do, we are looking for fun and enthusiastic volunteers to join us in our Barnt Green shop. Our shops are exciting and dynamic, with no two days being the same. From our walk-in customers, to receiving donations, and everything in between

As a Shop Volunteer with us, you will be:

• Engaging with customers
• Accepting and sorting donated stock
• Pricing donations for sale
• Working on the till

Our shops are open Monday to Saturday (some open on Sundays too) 9am to 5pm.  You can volunteer the hours that suit you, but it would be great if you could support in the shop for at least 3 hours a week.

Job description:

Are you enthusiastic about making a difference in your community through your design skills?

Our charity is in need of a Graphic Designer to assist us during this exciting time. We are currently in the process of developing our marketing strategy, which means there are plenty of updates to be made to our marketing materials.

We are searching for a skilled Graphic Designer who is interested in helping us update/create our branding guidelines and develop a new set of assets for our promotional materials.

This will be a temporary role specifically for this project, unless the individual is interested in collaborating on future design tasks that may arise once the initial work is completed.

If you have a keen eye for design and are willing to work with us to create an engaging and accessible branding guideline, we would love to hear from you!

Project tasks:

· Revise our branding colours and check for accessibility.

· Provide a new pallet of colours for our branding which must pass accessibility tests.

· Revise fonts.

· Produce a set of assets to be used on our social media and any other advertising material.

What do you need to become our Graphic Designer?

Essential:

· Professional experience with Graphic Designing.

· Understanding about accessibility and able to make sure our logo, fonts and colours are all accessible.

· Creativity and experience in developing effective marketing material.

· Understanding brand guidelines and consistently implementing the brand voice across all produced marketing materials.

· Experience in producing logos, assets and colour pallets.

About us: GT Scholars is a social enterprise that tackles educational inequality by giving ambitious young people the support, skills and strategies they need to achieve aspirations. 

We believe that all young people are gifted and talented, regardless of their background. We run a wide range of programmes that help young people achieve their academic and career aspirations, particularly those from less-privileged backgrounds.

Responsibilities: Facilitators are responsible for designing creative and interactive workshops for our young people, and delivering these workshops with our young people. We run some of our workshops online and other workshops are held in London. All workshops are held during the school holidays and in the evening and on weekends.

The workshop facilitator role is flexible and as part of your role, you may be involved in:

• Delivering and leading short workshops or courses, on behalf of GT Scholars (Online or offline)

• Designing engaging, interactive and educational workshops and short courses for young people and ensuring that the content is targeted to suit different abilities and capabilities

• Running your own bespoke workshops, eg. workshops in coding and technology

• Managing short activities and Q&A sessions during our workshops

• Working collaboratively with other event coordinators, volunteers, ambassadors, workshop facilitators and speakers at our events

• Following the agreed timings and content for workshops and courses

Person specification: 

As workshop facilitator you will need to:

• Have passion, knowledge and experience in coding, computing and technology

• Have strong presentation skills

• Have strong communication skills

• Be personable and able to confidently communicate with people from a range of backgrounds and professions.

• Be passionate and committed to tackling educational inequality

• Be punctual and organised

Availability: Workshops will take run during the day on school holiday dates, Saturdays or in the evening (5pm-8pm).

Additional information: We will need to conduct reference checks and you will need an Enhanced DBS for this role as you will be working directly with children. We can process this for you or you may submit one if this is less than 2 years old.
