Are you the future Chair of our Board of trustees?
Do you have skills and enthusiasm to cooperatively govern and bring our strategy into action?
We are looking for a Chair-designate for our Board, to work alongside our outgoing Chair for a set period of time, eventually taking-on chairing duties.
As the oldest charity in England (formed in 1451) we’re looking for someone to lead our Board, to work with other trustees and our Charity Manager to continue to shape our strategy and operational delivery, building on almost 600 years of successful support for local people.
Wokingham United Charities has a mission to relieve poverty and enhance the quality of life of those people in need in our community. We do this by the provision of Almshouse accommodation, by using our funds to help individuals in financial distress, hardship and poverty, and by providing funding to local charity, voluntary and community groups who themselves provide support to residents of Wokingham Borough.
Our usual income per annum is ~£700k, but we’ve been managing funds to help to relieve poverty in the midst of this cost-of-living crisis, and recently our turnover has been ~£1.5m.
About the role
This is a high-profile appointment, with strong commitment to the future of our organisation, and prior experience of charity leadership, both essential qualities.
Experience of committee or similar work, with a focus to lead the stable and forward-looking Board are also part of what we are looking for.
Our Board includes people with understanding of our charity, and we’d obviously expect new trustees to have empathy with our cause and our beneficiaries. Full induction to our organisation will be provided, plus specialist support you may need, including access to external training.
If you can think collectively and strategically to lead us to plan long-term, you have the primary skills needed; you’ll also help guide other trustees. Support from our paid employees is always available, as they will be dealing with the day-to-day running of the organisation.
We are a charity not a business, but we apply business principles to governing our organisation. We want to expand our Board’s diversity, in all its meanings, and strongly welcome applications from people from less-represented groups.
The Board currently meets every two months in Wokingham, with online/hybrid attendance from some people. It would be expected that our Chair attends face-to-face for the majority of meetings.

- Supporting our Community Shop Managers to run an exciting and inviting store.
- Using the till system to process sales, refunds and Gift Aid
- Opening and/or closing the shop, including cashing up at the end of the day
- Supporting other volunteers
- Using and updating our volunteer database
- Providing excellent customer service
- Photographing and selling key items on our online shop
- Creating posts to promote our shops on Instagram
Skills and Experiences Required: Not essential as full training will be provided, however some retail or supervisory experience would be beneficial, as would confidence in the use of technology.
What’s important to us is that you want to be part of our team and come ready to share your individual skills and experiences.
We do ask for a willingness to follow Shelter’s policies, including volunteering, health & safety, equality & diversity, safeguarding, confidentiality & data protection.
You will be required to complete some essential learning and a full induction before you start in this role.

As a Move on Volunteer you will be supporting our clients through client led action plans along with our support workers. The Casework Volunteer will provide holistic and trauma-informed casework support for our team of specialist support workers. Our team provides advice and support to young people aged 14 to 25 years, working closely with the community, statutory and voluntary organisations to ensure that the immediate and longer term needs of young people are met.
Our 1:1 work focuses on supporting young people to be well and to be heard. This role offers vital support to young people through individual sessions and advocacy around their wellbeing and rights.
Every day, week to week looks slightly different depending on the needs and priorities of the team and our young people. No previous casework experience is required, but you will need a positive, open and enthusiastic approach to learning new skills, getting involved and being shoulder to shoulder with young people.
Responsibilities:
- Keeping up to date and accurate records
- Making referrals to partner organisations e.g. housing, immigration, mental health support
- Accompanying young people to appointments when necessary
- Working 1:1 with young people under the direction of the Be Well, Be Heard Team Leader and other specialist support workers
- Supporting young people to complete forms e.g relating to welfare benefits, Universal Credit, Student Finance, college applications etc.
- Administrative tasks relating to casework
- Identifying and responding appropriately to safeguarding and protection issues
- Work with and adhere to all organisational policies and procedures, including but not limited to: Health and Safety, Behaviour Code, Lone Working, Child Protection and Safeguarding
- Any other tasks as directed by the Be Well, Be Heard Team Leader
We appreciate and understand that some tasks may be a completely new experience for you. We’re hoping to recruit volunteers who have a keen interest in developing their casework and advocacy skills, and with this in mind encourage volunteers to be open to new experiences. Your line manager will provide support and guidance, and will be available if you have any questions or concerns.
What we ask from you:
- Be available to volunteer on a regular weekly basis
- Able to volunteer one full day per week (10:30 - 16:30 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday)
- Be able to commit to volunteering for a minimum of 6 months

The Let's Go! Nature Buddies project takes referrals from the NHS Community Recovery Service as well as early-stage Alzheimer and falls-prevention services - part of a movement towards healthcare aimed at the overall wellbeing of an individual.
As a Nature Buddy volunteer, you will support people who are at risk of social isolation in their transition from 1-1 walks with members of our team in nature, into smaller group settings. It's a role for volunteers who love being outdoors and care about people. You'll work with our friendly, committed team who will provide training, guidance and support for you.
