Job description

Citizens Advice Merton and Lambeth (CAML) is the leading advice charity supporting individuals and families across the London boroughs of Merton and Lambeth.  We provide a range of information, support and advice services.  We also work to raise awareness and understanding of the issues challenging our clients and communities, as well as promoting the improvement of policies and practices that affect people’s lives both locally and nationally.

We were one of the first Citizens Advice services to open our doors in 1939. More than 80 years on, our support and services are as important as ever. We support people to resolve their advice problems and change their lives for the better. We do this on a free, confidential and impartial basis.

Aim of this role

Client Liaison Volunteers are part of the Information Team and have an important and varied role. You will be empowering members of the public to access the information they need, whilst supporting our wider team.

Information

  • Meet-and-greet members of public in reception areas

  • Identify whether clients live, work or study in boroughs of Merton or Lambeth

  • Establish the enquiry client has and provide information (where appropriate)

  • Search for information on trusted public websites such as Citizens Advice, Government website, etc

  • Signpost clients to other advice agencies as required

  • Discuss enquiries with supervisors, ensuring all aspects have been covered

Administration

  • Photocopy client letters/documents, scan into Casebook (our client database) with a brief note, ensuring any deadlines are reported to the Advice Supervisor on the day

  • Other admin tasks, as required

Appointments

  • Schedule and confirm appointments with clients and specific members of our team, explaining whether the client requires specific information or documentation for appointment

  • Record client engagement on our client database (Casebook).

  • Email or text appointment reminders to clients, updating Casebook

Locations

We have offices in both Merton (Mitcham and Morden) and Lambeth (Kennington), as well as a presence in outreach locations across both boroughs.

Our services are generally open to the public between 10am to 3pm, with varied opening days and times across locations.

What we are looking for

Due to increased levels of demand, we are recruiting specifically for the following days in the stated locations:

- Kennington: Monday, Wednesday

- Mitcham: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday

- Morden: Monday

We are recruiting based on the needs of the rota. Please only apply if you are available to volunteer on the stated days/locations, as we may not have the capacity to accommodate requests outside of this.

A commitment to volunteer as part of a friendly and supportive charity team, our services, policies and volunteering with clients are extremely important. Good interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) are essential.

You will need the ability to use online resources, and you will need to be organised, reliable and friendly.

Speaking another of the languages spoken widely in Merton and Lambeth can also be very helpful.

Training and Support

You will receive comprehensive training for this role and learning will continue through various methods of training.

Commitment

We arrange the rota according to the needs of the service and volunteers are typically with us for one day per week or more.

Our core volunteering hours are 9.15am to 4pm, but there is flexibility and days can be split into morning/afternoon sessions. We ask volunteers to arrive at 9.15am so they can attend morning briefings and prepare for the day ahead before the doors open to the public at 10am.

If you are interested in the role and joining us, we would be delighted to hear from you. Please visit our website to get the Application Form and Diversity Monitoring Form and email them to us by 6pm Friday 12th July.
