The Exeter Students’ Guild is looking for Trustees to join our Board. We currently have 2 vacant positions.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Trustees are essential to the effectiveness of the Students’ Guild. Trustees have the ultimate legal responsibility for keeping the organisation focused on its purpose and directing the strategy (working with staff). They also have financial oversight, are responsible for resources, and are expected to ensure the organisation stays within the law.
We are looking for 2 Trustees to join our dedicated board, alongside 13 other Trustees made up of those with external professional experience, Student Trustees with lived experience as Exeter students, and Officer Trustees who are democratically elected to represent student voice.
Our Trustees are appointed for an inital term of 4 years, with the option of a second term. This is a volunteer role, with reasonable expenses being paid to cover your attendance at meetings and events.
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE
- Exprience or knowledge in one of the following: Higher Education, Senior Leadership, Students' Unions or Marketing
- A good understanding of the issues affecting students in the UK

As a Branch Secretary, you would be in an essential volunteer role as the principal communications trustee managing and maintaining the administrative affairs of our branch. Using your expertise and skills, you will be able to influence how we care for and prevent cruelty to animals and drive the implementation of key initiatives. We rescue and rehome around 200 animals each year and provide community help and support with animal welfare in all DA postcodes plus BR8 postcodes.
As a minimum, trustees would normally be expected to attend a monthly committee meeting lasting some 2 to 3 hours. However, the commitment may vary depending on whether or not the trustee takes on additional duties.
Primary responsibilities of the Branch Secretary:
- To act as the primary contact point for all branch communications with the national Society, the branch committee and the branch membership.
- Arrange branch meetings, ensure accurate minutes are taken and distributed in accordance with branch rules.
- Ensure all branch committee decisions are implemented and actions completed.
- Arrange the branch AGM including the compilation and distribution of the annual report, nominations and agenda in line with the strict timetable laid down in the branch rules.
- Arrange the timely dissemination of the contents of all correspondence and literature received by the branch, ensuring availability to all committee members, and reply to all branch correspondence where necessary.
- Order and distribute RSPCA stationery, leaflets, posters and other fundraising and promotional material.
- Liaise with the Branch support specialist (BSS) and group chief inspector and notify them of all branch meetings.
- Advise the BSS of all changes to branch facilities, services and contact details.
- In the absence of the membership secretary, assume responsibility for the maintenance of the branch membership list.
- Submit recommendations for national Society awards to the BSS, in accordance with the wishes of the committee.
What we are looking for in a volunteer:
- Above all, we are looking for someone who is committed to the RSPCA’s charitable objectives and shares our passion for animal welfare.
- Specific skills such as finance, fundraising, project management, business experience, awareness of employment and/or charity legislation can be useful, but not essential.
- You will need to be able to work with people and have good interpersonal skills. You do not need to be an expert, although commitment, common sense, and the ability to be objective are vital.
- Be able to commit to 4 hours weekly.

How you can help
As Volunteer Management Board Member, you’ll lead the recruitment management of volunteers, for local/community projects and to support the running of the organisation and its programmes and operations. You will have a key role in developing a network of green champions for the Eco Centre and the community-based Climate Action Plan initiative.

Ladybarn Community Hub has existed for 40 years but has gone through several iterations in that time. The current charity has existed since 2019 and despite some recent challenges we are starting to build up our local image and develop the Hub into a community resource to be proud of. We're now looking to recruit trustees with experience of community work, charity governance, fundraising and bidmaking or trustee chairing to help us get to the next level. You don't need to have experience of all of the above as we're recruiting several trustees at once but 3+ years of experience in one of these areas would be preferred.
Ladybarn is a very diverse area, and our community includes lots of students, south Asian families and older Irish communities among others. We would like our trustee board to represent the community and we particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian and other ethnic minority people and people with disabilities to apply for this post. We're developing groups like a Muslim men's mindfulness group and an LGBT coffee morning and having lived experience will help us tailor groups to appeal to different demographics. We're also particularly interested in trustees that live locally and care about Ladybarn and the surrounding area, but this is not a requirement for every trustee.

The Living Collection at WWT has been integral to our sites since Sir Peter Scott established Slimbridge as a centre for research, conservation, recreation, and education in 1946.Since that time, the collection has evolved from the display of a stamp collection of birds to larger, naturalistic exhibits show-casing the variety of colours, form, and function of waterfowl in natural-looking habitats.
As part of delivering our strategy and developing a sustainable business, we are looking at the role the Living Collections play in attracting visitation and memberships, and to do this we need to fully understand our members and visitors attitudes to this and the attitude of the general public. To start this, we need assistance in undertaking a broad literature review around this area from the last 12 months, and providing us with a general summary by mid August to enable our next steps internally.
This role involves:
●Researching, preparing and collating information relating to public attitudes to animals in human care, e.g. YouGov polls, BIAZA research, university research papers
●Analysing existing research from external agencies outlining public opinions on Zoos and other organisation that keep animals

Bodmin Keep is over 160 years old and is the historic home of the Army in Cornwall. This former headquarters of the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry houses the museum, with more than three hundred years of military history, a library and meeting rooms. Keeping in regular contact with our members to check on their wellbeing is one of our key services.
Our Wellbeing Volunteers contact a range of different members every week to make a friendly 'check in' call and have a chat. During these calls, you'll provide the opportunity for our members to talk, offer friendly support and make them aware of the Deafblind UK services available to them.
Whatever the conversation you’ll be making a positive difference!
This is a home based role so you don't need to be 'local' and you don’t need experience to become one of our Wellbeing Volunteers. The majority of our members communicate with clear speech so no specialised skills or knowledge is required. You just need to be comfortable chatting over the phone and be able to commit to a regular weekly time slot to make calls to our members. Some knowledge or experience of sight and or hearing loss would be an advantage in this particular role and confidence in speaking with people of all ages and backgrounds.
We provide full training and ongoing support in this role and ask for a minimum commitment of three months.
We require you to have Wifi and access to a PC, tablet or mobile device. This is to allow you to complete training, have access to the Deafblind UK phone system and to submit online contact logs.

Following the successful implementation of our strategy to engage lay trustees with our board and committees, the Foundation is now seeking to appoint two new lay members to its Board of Trustees. We are seeking two lay trustees to enhance the breadth of knowledge and expertise on our board. We are actively seeking individuals with expertise in areas such as:

• charity law and governance
• company law and regulation
• cyber security and risks, data structure and management
• IT and digital transformation

• organisational development and HR
As lay trustee members they would also join the Board of Directors of the Association as a non-voting member, and be a co-opted member of the Council, which acts as an advisory group to the board.
Purpose of role: Lay trustee members enhance the knowledge, expertise, judgement, and balance available to the Board of Trustees to ensure a financially sound, healthy, and legally compliant organisation. Their principal assets will be their knowledge and expertise, independence, and the confidence and ability to be a critical friend of the Foundation as a whole.

Term of appointment:
Following a successful interview and satisfactory references lay trustese will be appointed for an initial 1-year term, renewable for up to 4-years in total.
Please note that terms of trustees may be revised as part of the governance review process.
Time commitment
The Board of Trustees meet six times a year. The dates for board meetings are set 12 months in advance. Meetings normally take place on Friday approximately every 6 weeks as either a half-day or full day meeting. Meetings are either held at 21 Portland Place, London or via videoconference, but videoconferencing facilities will be available for all meetings.
Trustees are expected to attend each board meeting and to engage in communication between board meetings with staff and board colleagues (primarily by email) as required.
Expenses
This role is voluntary and is unremunerated. Trustees will be reimbursed for their expenses for travel, hotel accommodation and subsistence when attending meetings. Expenses will be paid in accordance with the expenses policy. As this is a voluntary role, Trustees are not otherwise compensated for their service.
Induction programme
Training in the role of trustee will be provided along with an induction into the work of the charity.

- Oversee the financial performance of the Foundation; review and agree annual business plans and budgets

Trustees are also expected to:
- Act strictly in accordance with the Foundation’s Articles of Association
- Attend meetings of the Foundation Board on a regular basis and be well prepared by reading relevant papers in advance

- Undertake training and induction as may be required to carry out the role
- Keep up to date with developments in the healthcare and the charity/not-for-profit sector generally
Person Specification

Relevant expertise outside the field of anaesthesia, such as in:

Deafblind UK members have combined sight and hearing loss and many can feel lonely or socially isolated. We offer a free telephone befriending service where we match volunteers with one of our members to have a weekly 30 minute chat together.
We are looking for confident, empathetic and friendly people who can hold a good conversation. You could be chatting about similar interests or learning about each other’s lives. Whatever the conversation you’ll be having a positive impact.
One 30 minute call seems really simple but having someone to talk to and someone to listen, could really make a difference to our members. It could be that you’re the only person they speak to that day, or even that week.

At Cats Protection we help thousands of cats each year thanks to our dedicated and passionate volunteer groups and teams, all of which help our feline friends in a different ways. They take in stray and abandoned cats and ensure they receive the veterinary care and attention they deserve, help raise funds, promote neutering and help spread cat welfare messages. Our volunteer treasurers maintain the finances of local groups and teams, ensuring they hold the funds needed to continue their vital work. Cats Protection relies solely on donations from generous members of the public, and our volunteer treasurers help make sure these funds are spent in the most effective way.
What can you expect to be doing?
- Preparing budgets
- Keeping accurate financial records
- Reporting financial records via ‘Cashlog’ (Cats Protection supplied software)
- Paying invoices and volunteer expenses
- Being part of a team which ensures there are sufficient funds to meet expenditure
- Updating and advising others on income received, expenditure and available funds
- Managing and monitoring donations made to the group
- Following financial procedures e.g. Gift Aid returns and VAT claims

Bright Futures UK (BFUK) supports children and young people back into education after taking time out due to a long-term mental health or physical condition. We provide support throughout young people's treatment and recovery, making sure they aren't worried about missing school and can focus on getting better!
We need confident volunteers to facilitate young people getting to know each other and combat social isolation through fun activity challenges, breakout conversation rooms, and online games.
What You'll Do:
- Facilitate Sessions: Lead bi-weekly, hour-long online sessions with conversation topics and activities.
- Support and Engage: Create a supportive and inclusive environment where young people feel comfortable participating and expressing themselves.
- Encourage Participation: Actively encourage all participants to join in the activities and conversations, fostering a sense of community and connection.
- Monitor Progress: Monitor the group's dynamics and the participants' well-being, providing feedback and support as needed.
- Collaborate with Team: Work with the Bright Futures UK workshop coordinator to ensure the sessions align with the organization’s mission and goals.
