Retail & Furniture Assembly Volunteers  - A New Volunteer Opportunity in Acorns Children's Hospice Superstore in Chelmsley Wood - opening in September 

Acorns have a network of shops across the West Midlands that generate a substantial level of income to enable us to care for children and their families. 

To help us to continue to provide the care that we do, we are looking for fun and enthusiastic volunteers to join us in our Chelmsley Wood shop. Our shops are exciting and dynamic, with no two days being the same. From our walk-in customers, to receiving donations, and everything in between

Additionally, we are looking for empowered Furniture Assembly Volunteers. In this hands-on role, you will assist with constructing and dismantling flat-pack furniture, beds, and other large items. Don’t worry if you’re new to this—full training will be provided! 

How much time will it take? 

Our shops are open Monday to Saturday (some open on Sundays too), 9am to 5pm. You can volunteer the hours that suit you, but ideally we’ll need you to volunteer for at least 3 hours per week.

At Acorns we provide care and support for life limited or life threatened children and their families. We are a charity, so most of the care that we provide is funded through fundraising and through our shops.

As a Shop Volunteer with us, you will be:

• Engaging with customers
• Accepting and sorting donated stock
• Pricing donations for sale
• Working on the till

Our partner, a US 501(c)(3) non-profit, is a movement of solidarity and action that brings people from all backgrounds together with programs designed to reach out to and engage with people living in persistent poverty.

The Board wants to strengthen its financial oversight of their operations, through the appointment of a finance professional based in the USA, with a keen interest in eliminating poverty, as Treasurer.

The post holder will provide strategic oversight and advice in financial matters, including the annual and medium-term budgets, financial administration and controls, financial reporting, the annual audit, and, if possible, fundraising.

The Board meets monthly, for approximately 90 minutes, online.

Our partner conducts research, develops recommendations and advocates for reform to make policy and decision-making processes in global governance more accountable to the people they affect now and in the future.

They are seeking a Treasurer to provide financial support and guidance for a resurgent NGO. The Treasurer has responsibility for overseeing maintenance of the accounts, providing quarterly management accounts and annual accounts. The postholder will manage the limited number of payments and also provide financial support to the Board of Trustees, including contributing to funding proposals.

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of UK charity accounting and filing requirements, as well as an interest in global issues and a desire to strengthen the effectiveness of global governance.

The estimated time commitment required for the role is 1-5 hours per month.

The Trustee will monitor the financial administration of the charity and report to the Board on its state of financial health, in line with best practice and in compliance with the governing document and legal requirements, providing the confidence and knowledge to better make strategic decisions.

Main responsibilities

• To oversee the budgets, accounts, management accounts and financial statements on behalf of the Board in discussion with the CEO, Finance Manager and accountant.
• To ensure that proper accounts and records are kept, ensuring financial resources are spent and invested in line with the charity’s policies, good governance, legal and regulatory requirements.
• To be instrumental in the development and implementation of financial and reserves policies.

Our amazing team of volunteers help us run over 100 shops across England and Wales.  Every donated item that you sort, prepare and sell helps to raise vital funds to support us in our mission to make sure no one, no matter how complex their disabilities, is isolated, left out, or unable to fulfil their potential. Our shops are at the heart of local communities – sharing the work of Sense, and helping to secure support for our life changing work.

What your role will involve

There are a variety of tasks that you can get involved with in the shop, including:

• Welcoming and assisting customers, providing great customer service and a fantastic shopping experience
• Receiving donated goods from members of the public
• Sorting, steaming, tagging and preparing donated goods for sale
• Creating eye catching window and in-shop displays
• Keeping the shop floor well stocked, tidy, clean and organised
• Processing sales and serving on the till
• Promoting Gift Aid and other Sense fundraising initiatives
• Acting as an ambassador for Sense; promoting the shop and Sense in your local community
• Supporting with the recruitment and training of new volunteers
• Following new health, safety and social distancing measures to ensure the safety of everyone

In this role you’ll be able to develop your organisation, communication and team working skills. Most importantly you’ll be supporting your local group to run activities that bring friendship and fun to your local MS Community.

You’ll have an interest in the MS Society and the work that we do, as well as the enthusiasm to represent both us and our values locally. You will understand the needs of people affected by MS in your area and be sympathetic to the needs and motivations of volunteers. If you have up to an hour free once a week for 6 months then this could be the volunteer role for you!

“Everyone needs other people, but not everyone has someone. 

Befriending offers supportive, reliable relationships through volunteer befrienders to people who would otherwise be socially isolated. Around the UK, there are befriending projects which organise effective support for children and young people, families, people with mental ill-health, people with learning disabilities and older people, amongst many others.

The results of befriending can be very significant. Befriending often provides people with a new direction in life, opens up a range of activities and leads to increased self-esteem and self confidence. Befriending can also reduce the burden on other services which people may use inappropriately as they seek social contact.”
