Age UK Coventry & Warwickshire is looking to recruit volunteers who have a variety of backgrounds and a range of skills, to join our Board of Trustees. 

Becoming a trustee of a charity is a rewarding way to help - drawing on your own skills and experience, whilst developing new skills and building positive working relationships. This is a dynamic role, liaising with a team of committed and passionate people and you will be supporting a vibrant, independent local charity. 

A little bit about us… 

Age UK Coventry & Warwickshire provides a range of services to adults and older people across the city of Coventry and County of Warwickshire and is dedicated to improving both the quality of later life and, help make later life a more fulfilling and enjoyable experience. We play a significant role in supporting local communities. 

The charity has an annual income of over £4 million, employs over 200 staff and is supported by 300 volunteers.

We are governed by a board of trustees, each of whom brings varied skills and experience. Trustees attend four full board meetings a year and are usually invited to additional sub-committee meetings and other ad hoc meetings, providing specific guidance on key aspects of the organisation. The average time commitment is usually around 3-4 hours a month. 

What skills are we looking for? 

We would like to hear from members of the local community who want to work with us in promoting support and independence in later life.

Trustees need to have the ability to think strategically, and to work collaboratively with others. Trustees help to shape and guide the future strategy and development of the charity, including the development and launch of exciting new services. 

Our Board of Trustees should reflect the diverse community it serves and we welcome generative discussion and new thinking. 

Oxfordshire Breastfeeding Support (OBS) is a small charity (a charitable incorporated organisation or CIO) providing free direct breastfeeding support to the families of Oxfordshire - via a mixture of virtual one to one appointments, in-person sessions, Zoom groups, a private Facebook group, antenatal workshops and work targeted at groups that are under-represented. Although founded as an independent charity in 2018, OBS’s work is a continuation of 12 years of breastfeeding support under the Baby Café umbrella. OBS is well known and respected in the community, with strong and valuable relationships with other service providers in the NHS, Local Authority and voluntary sectors. OBS is seeking to recruit a trustee to responsible for strategy and impact for a period of 2-3 years. In addition to the responsibilities of a general trustee, the strategy and impact trustee will :

• Lead the development and review of the charity's strategic plan, collaborating with fellow trustees and senior management to set ambitious goals and objectives.

• Monitor the implementation of the strategic plan, regularly assessing progress, and providing guidance to optimize impact.

• Establish clear metrics and indicators to measure the charity's performance and effectiveness in achieving its mission.

• Analyze data and insights to identify trends, opportunities, and areas for improvement in the charity's programs and initiatives.

• Support the Charity Director and senior management in aligning their strategies with the overall mission and goals of the charity.

• Collaborate with other trustees to ensure all aspects of the charity's operations are in line with its strategy and values.

• Stay informed about the external landscape and developments in the charity sector, incorporating relevant trends and best practices into the charity's strategies.

• Provide expert advice on impact assessment methodologies, helping the charity understand and communicate its outcomes to stakeholders.

• Ensure that the charity's decisions are evidence-based and driven by commitment to maximizing positive social and environmental impact.

This work is likely to involve around six hours per month.

Its board of Trustees are responsible for the overall governance, monitoring and strategic direction of the charity to ensure that the charity fulfils the objects defined in its articles and acts in accordance with the charity’s vision and mission, and in compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements. The trustees have delegated the overall management of the charity to the CEO. The CEO has recruited a staff team with specific responsibility for implementing strategy.

Meetings of the trustees are held quarterly and are used to review progress, set objectives, establish policies, as well as other issues of relevance.

Role Description – Treasurer to the Board of Trustees  

The Board of Trustees recognise that charity governance is a balanced relationship between the employed staff; the Chief Executive, Executive Leadership team, and the Board of Trustees. Together they are responsible for directing the affairs of the charity, ensuring that it is solvent, well-run, and delivering the intended charitable benefits. 

A key role in the effective governance of the financial affairs is that of the Treasurer among the charity Trustees. While financial matters are the responsibility of all Trustees, the Treasurer takes special responsibility for all aspects of the charity’s financial management and reporting. 

An overview of the role of Treasurer is:

• monitor the financial administration of the charity and report to the Board of Trustees, in compliance with the governing document.

• oversee the charity’s financial risk-management process; 

• act as a counter signatory per the bank mandate; and 

• provide board-level liaison with the external auditors on specific issues such as the Auditors’ Management Letter and the related board representations. 

In addition to the normal responsibilities of a Trustee the Treasurer will:

• oversee budgets, internal management accounts and annual financial statements before presentation to the Board of Trustees; 

• ensure that proper accounting records are kept, financial resources are properly invested and economically spent; 

• liaise with the Chief Executive and Operations Director as appropriate;

• chair the Finance and General Purposes (FGP) committee and report back to the Trustees; 

• monitor and advise on the financial viability of the charity; 

• oversee the implementation of and monitor financial systems; 

• advise on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plan;

We currently have a vacancy for an inspiring person with a background in finance to join our professional and forward-thinking Trustee Board. The Time Commitment

ICC requires all Trustees to attend 6 Trustee Board meetings each year and to participate in the same number of Committee meetings. Meetings of the Board normally take place early in the evening. There are occasional ‘away days’ and further duties, but the main responsibility outside formal meetings is to give support via email exchange. Formal meetings can be via Teams as well as in person.

Who we are:

We are a long-standing (32 years) local charity, based in Ashford, providing friendly advice, companionship and volunteering opportunities for anyone in our part of Kent who is socially isolated, lonely, or would welcome support with their mental health and wellbeing. We arrange 3 free drop-in sessions per week at Ashford Parish Rooms, at which our service users participate in a wide range of activities including crafts, singing and art therapy. We also offer food and beverages from our pop-up healthy eating café and dedicated door-to-door transport where required.

Due to an upcoming retirement we are now seeking a Trustee to join our Board.

About the Role:

General Trustee

As with all of our Trustees we warmly welcome community-minded individuals who want to make a difference and are happy to bring their personal and professional experience and expertise to the Board. If you have legal, IT or HR background that would be a bonus, but the key attributes are that you have a commitment to enhancing the health and wellbeing of the local community and want to help people live independently wherever possible. 

It is expected that all Trustees will be able to attend our Trustee meetings in Ashford, which are held at least once a quarter, as well as the AGM and ideally a small number of other functions eg fundraising events.

Being a Trustee

IRMO’s Board of Trustees is made up of six to nine Trustees, who work together to ensure the charity is run properly. As a trustee, you will have the opportunity to support IRMO’s strategic development and oversee its finances. Trustees meet every two months (usually online in the evening) and are asked to commit an additional eight to ten hours between meetings to follow up on actions and provide advice and input on strategic documents and areas of work relevant to their areas of expertise.

Specific responsibilities

● Ensure that the Board receives appropriate budgetary and financial information on the activities of the charity, and highlight any variances

● Help the Board to understand the charity’s financial position and whether its resources meet present and future needs

● Ensure that the Board is aware of, and advise the Board on how to carry out, its financial duties and responsibilities

● Oversee the preparation and scrutiny of IRMO’s annual accounts

● Ensure that robust financial policies, procedures and controls are in place and reviewed on a regular basis

● Set an appropriate reserves policy

● Review banking arrangements with the Director every three years

● Review and approve, as appropriate, transactions above the threshold set out in the Financial Controls Policy that require triple-approval

● Sign funding contracts and financial reports when required

● For the purposes of good financial governance, carry out bi-annual spotchecks on IRMO’s transactions and monthly reconciliation

Expected Time Commitments

Trustees are asked to attend four trustee (Council) meetings per year, one of which includes the AGM.   Further support to the Trust and attendance to other committee meetings are encouraged, but it is recognised that these would be dependent on the individual’s personal circumstances and other commitments. 

Hybrid working - Meetings ideally take place ‘in person’ at the Bendrigg site (LA8 0NR) (minimum of two per year), however, online access can usually be made available if required.

City of Chelmsford Mencap is a small independent charity providing support and structured classes for adults with a learning disability across mid-Essex. The trustees play a vital role in making sure that the Kingsbury Charity achieves its core purpose. They oversee the overall management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that the Kingsbury Charity has a clear strategy and that their work and goals are in line with their vision. 

You will need to live in either Brent or Harrow.
