We are looking for up to 3 Trustees to join our Board at Citizens Advice Tandridge District to support and develop our strategic priorities as the organisation works to ensure it can help as many clients as possible at a time when they need us most.

Who we are

Citizens Advice Tandridge District is a local independent charity that provides information and advice to help people resolve their problems, including benefits, debt, employment, housing and so on. We provide free and independent advice to help people solve the difficulties they face, and improve the policies and practices that affect peoples’ lives.

The role

What does a Trustee do! 

A Trustee’s role is to act in the best interests of the organization. They are accountable for the organization’s finances, legal affairs, overall performance, and serious arising issues. Trustees must ensure that executives align with the organization’s purpose and mission, acting in ways that advance these goals and uphold the organization’s values. Statutory duties include ensuring compliance with laws and regulations, safeguarding assets, and maintaining accurate financial records.

Commitment

Each Trustee will attend Trustee meetings on a regular basis, a Trustee may also be appointed as a Co Chair and into other roles such as Treasurer and Secretary, and also may join a committee.

What difference will you make?

As Chair of Trustees, you will have a profound impact on the future of New Forest Mencap. Your leadership will help us continue and expand our vital services, from social clubs and life skills workshops to advocacy and employability support. By shaping our strategy and ensuring strong governance, you will enable us to reach more people with learning disabilities, empower their families, and build a more inclusive community.

Time commitment

Trustee appointments will initially be for a term of 3 years which may be extended to a second term, or more. The Board of Trustees currently meets monthly in New Milton. We aim to meet for 2 hours, although recent increased activity has tended to extend the time to 3 hours. *The Board recognizes that it would be better to move to a bi-monthly or quarterly schedule, and would like to do so in future. Trustees receive Committee meeting papers a week before the meeting to enable them to prepare for the meeting.

Purpose 

The Trustee role is voluntary with meetings taking place a minimum of once a quarter. Trustees are responsible for: 

• controlling Navigates management and administration 

• ensuring that Navigates income and property are used only for the purposes set out in the 

• governing document and for no other purpose 

• acting reasonably and prudently in all matters relating to the charity 

• acting in the best interests of the charity. 

Main Duties 

1) Comply with Navigates governing document and law. The successful Trustee and your co-trustees must: 

• Make sure that the charity complies with its governing document 

• Comply with charity law requirements and other laws that apply to Navigate 

• As a Trustee, you should take responsible steps to find out about legal requirements for example, by reading relevant guidance or taking appropriate advice when you need to. 

2) Act in Navigates best interests, you must: 

• Do what you and your co-trustees (and no one else) decide will enable the Charity to carry out its purposes 

• With co-trustees make balanced and adequately informed decisions, thinking about the short term and charities future 

• Avoid putting yourself in a position where your duty to Navigate conflicts with your personal interests or loyalty to any other person or body 

• Not receive any benefit from Navigate unless it is properly authorised and is clearly in the charity’s interests; this also includes anyone who is financially connected to you. 

3) Manage Navigates resources responsibly–the successful trustee(s) must act responsibly, reasonably and honestly (duty prudence). The trustees must: 

• make sure Navigates assets are only used to support or carry out its purposes

• avoid exposing the assets, beneficiaries or reputation to undue risk 

• Not over-commit the charity 

• take special care when investing or borrowing 

• comply with any restrictions on spending funds 

4)  Act with reasonable care and skill 

• must use reasonable care and skill, making use of your skills and experience and taking appropriate advice when necessary 

• should give enough time, thought and energy to your role, for example by preparing for, attending and actively participating in all trustees’ meetings (once a quarter). 

5)  Ensure that Navigate is accountable by complying with statutory accounting and reporting requirements. You should also: 

• be able to demonstrate that your charity is complying with the law, well run and effective

• ensure appropriate accountability to members, if your charity has a membership separate from the trustees 

• ensure accountability within the charity, particularly where you delegate responsibility for particular tasks or decisions to staff or volunteers 

Essential – 

The successful candidate(s) will meet the Charities Commission eligibility criteria, specifically:

• You must be at least 16 years old to be a trustee of a charitable company or a charitable incorporated organisation (CIO), 

• You must not act as a trustee if you are disqualified under the Charities Act, unless your disqualification has been waived by the Commission. 

• Fit and proper persons - Finance Act 2010 requires all of the charity’s managers (including trustees) to be ‘fit and proper persons’. 

• Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks – an enhanced DBS check: this will include a check against the relevant barred list. 

• A client focused approach to service delivery 

• Excellent communication skills 

• Ability to think creatively 

• Competent IT skills 

• Knowledge, skills or experience in one or more of the following areas: PR/Marketing/Communications, Fundraising, Education, Mental Health / Health and Wellbeing 

Desirable - The successful candidate(s) may evidence; 

• Knowledge/experience of the free advice/charity sector 

• Knowledge/experience of Social Policy Issues 

• A sound understanding of money and debt advice processes, procedures and ethics.

The Council of Trustees

Worcestershire Wildlife Trust is governed by a council of trustees.  The Council is responsible for ensuring effective governance, setting and monitoring the Trust’s strategic direction and policies and ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation and regulations (including the Charities Act 2011 and Companies Act 2006). 

Trustees are required to attend council meetings. There are eight of these per year, although this may be supplemented with additional meetings as needed. Trustees meetings are held on Monday evenings at our HQ at Lower Smite Farm with the option to join online via Zoom. Trustees are also required to attend the Annual General Meeting and meetings of any committees or working groups they are involved in. The Chair, Vice Chair, Honorary Treasurer and Honorary Secretary are elected by the Council annually. Council currently has 16 members, you can read the profiles of current Trustees on our website.

The normal mode of communication for council matters is email and electronic format documents. This enables the effective use of time and resources and minimises our environmental impacts where possible.

The Duties of a Trustee

Trustees are committed to devoting time and effort to use their skills, knowledge and experience to help Worcestershire Wildlife Trust achieve its aims:

• Ensure that the Trust complies with its governing documents, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.
• Contribute to the development of the Trust’s strategic plan and review as appropriate.
• Act always in the Trust’s best interests, working with fellow trustees to make balanced and adequately informed decisions, considering the long term as well as the short term.

Would you like to help govern and shape the work of your local Wildlife Trust whilst being part of a federation of 46 Wildlife Trusts in the UK and Wildlife Trusts Wales?

We are looking for people who share our vision and commitment of nature recovery to take up vacant positions on Gwent Wildlife Trust’s board of trustees. In particular, we are looking for a Company Secretary as well as trustees with financial oversight skills to succeed to Treasurer, however these are not the only requirements, applications for general trustee positions are also welcome.

Role description

St Albans & District Foodbank is looking for a Trustee. We currently have seven active Trustees and are looking for enthusiastic and talented people to join our Board.

The Foodbank serves the local community providing emergency food for those facing crisis. In the last 12 months we provided over 14,000 food parcels. We distribute food via ten weekly distribution centres that are run around the district by our committed volunteers. We currently have 7 part-time staff and over 130 active volunteers.  We are more than a Foodbank as we offer wellbeing, signposting and advocacy services, both directly and in conjunction with other agencies.

Trustee meetings are held 6 times per year, typically on the third Tuesday of alternate months between 4.00 and 6.30pm.  Trustees are expected to undertake additional work for the charity between meetings, subject to their availability and skill set, for example representing the Charity at local events or with partnership organisations.

The Trustee role is voluntary and unremunerated, though reasonable expenses can be reimbursed.

Being a Trustee

The challenge of being a Trustee requires, amongst other things:

• ability to understand management information; 

• the ability to share and embrace knowledge and specialisms and 

• an understanding of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship;

• strong communication skills and an ability to contribute effectively at meetings and

• a strong commitment to the objectives of the Foodbank.

Trustees have collective responsibility for the governance of the organisation and for all decisions made by the Board.  They set the strategic direction for the organisation, ensuring alignment with the Foodbank’s values and are responsible for setting organisational policy, defining goals, agreeing the financial plan, evaluating performance and ensuring that strong relationships are maintained between the Trustees and the Management and Volunteer Team.

We are very much a new concept within the charity and business world, what we aim to do is not focus on just one business activity and force people to work within it but to grow along side our teams and develop new business opportunities based on the skill sets and abitions of our teams.

Below are the details of the general responsibilities of a trustee within Living Reasons and the 12 areas we wish to recruit trustees in so that we can start to develop the charity more and start the process of registering and ultimately launching the charity within the next 12 months.

Nonspecific trustee criteria (all trustees must meet this criteria)

1) Ability to understand how the charity works in the public interest and ensure that all activities the charity carries out always fulfil this requirement. Bringing in to question any activities that may not fall within the charity’s public interest obligation, to the other trustees.

2) Agree with and agree to always work within the charity’s governing document and within the law. Making sure that the charity always operates within the governing document and within the law.

3) Act within the charity’s best interests by agreement within the other trustees on the board and following all trustee processes including decision making and voting. Avoid conflicts of interest with the operation of the charity and bring any potential conflicts of interest, to the attention of the trustee board as soon as possible.

4) Manage the charity’s resources responsibly, including ensuring the charity’s assets are used for the charity’s purpose, not take any inappropriate risks, do not over commit to the charity, taking special care when investing or barrowing and ensure the charity complies with any funding restrictions.

5) Always act with reasonable care and skill.

6) Ensure that the charity is always accountable, ensure that the charity is able to demonstrate it is compliant in law, well run and effective. Where responsibility has been delegated, trustees must ensure that the charity still remains accountable.

7) Must not be an undischarged bankrupt or be in an IVA.

8) Must not have any unspent convictions or be on the sex offenders register.

9) Must not be banned from being a company director or trustee.

All trustees will be required to attend 1 full board meeting every quarter which may be in person or over online video calling.

1 additional meeting annually that will also be at the same time as the annual general meeting must be attended.

There may be further meetings if you are on other committees or are voted on to the executive board of trustees (this is not mandatory and is a further voluntary commitment that you can nominate yourself for election).

We are looking for 12 trustees in total, once we have key trustee roles filled, we will then register the charity and move forward as we continue the recruitment process. The three main trustees we would like to have in place before registering the charity are: Operational, Financial and Income Generation. This does not mean we are not recruiting the other 9, we just won't register until after people with these skills have been recruited. This is a brand new idea and concept for a charity and business activity and requires a team that are forward thinking and are not restrained by previous ways of working, putting people at the heart of what we do, this is a charity that is supply a service for people who have struggled in the work environment as it is but will be directly generating the income for the charity as well, our service users will be our employees, trainees and volunteers and that needs to be seen as a positive move forward by anyone involved in the charity from day one.

Jason, the person starting this charity has autism, ADHD, as well as mental health issues and physical conditions that are dibilitating and has spect 20 years in the charity retail industry and has loved his time working in them but has found it increasing more difficult to work in the environment due to, what he considers undue and unnecessary pressures that hinder rather than help the charity sector to reach its full potential and he feels that, key to changing this for the better is understanding the neurodiversity of humanity and catering for it in the workplace. This is how Living Reasons was developed as an idea and now he needs to find people to bring the idea to life. 

We are looking to appoint a new Trustee to the Board to support CHEER’s mission of providing advice, friendship and support to Elmbridge’s older community.

We’re particularly seeking someone with experience of marketing and communications to complement the skills and backgrounds of existing Trustees.  The role will oversee the formulation and implementation of CHEER’s marketing and communication strategy, providing guidance and support to the Board and team to ensure successful execution.

If you have an interest in the issues surrounding the elderly living in the UK, a desire to give those who need it, a helping hand and support along with a background in marketing and communications – with digital marketing a particular advantage - we’d love to hear from you.

CHEER: 

Is a registered charity serving the local community of Elmbridge for over 60 years. Our mission is to provide advice, friendship, and support to help older community in Elmbridge lead full, dignified and independent lives.  We do so through delivery of 5 core services (befriending, benefits, events, signposting and CHEER’s Parkinson’s group) designed to reduce loneliness and social isolation and alleviate financial hardship.  

We consistently achieve remarkable things with minimal resources and are often told we have changed people's lives relying on a dedicated team of staff, trustees and volunteers to deliver these essential and beneficial services.  

Trustee role: 

Our trustees are all volunteers, most of whom live or work in the local community, and all of whom use their skills, knowledge and experience to guide and govern our service, shape strategy, and give direction to the charity.  We are a small and friendly team, collectively responsible for CHEER and each enjoying the chance to contribute to our community.  

The main responsibilities of a trustee are: 

• Formulating and reviewing CHEER’s vision, values, and strategic direction 

• Establishing and monitoring policies to provide guidance for staff 

• Ensuring compliance with the Charity’s governing document and the law 

• Ensuring accountability to such bodies as the Charities Commission, donors, staff and volunteers 

• Managing the Charity’s resources responsibly 

• Contributing to the discharge of the Board’s duties and effective Board performance 

• Promoting the charity and protecting its excellent reputation 

• Appointing staff, giving them guidance and support 

• Monitoring the Charity’s performance

• All trustees are expected to adopt Nolan’s seven principles of public life:  selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership

Generally, a minimum of 4-6 hours a month, occasionally more. This includes: 4x Board meetings a year, plus the annual AGM dates of which are flexible.  Helping staff with advice and enquiries on an ad hoc basis and/or additional support such as working with other trustees or members of staff on key projects.

The role is predominantly home-based, and board meetings normally take place in a venue in Elmbridge.

Empathy and a passion for improving the lives of older people; effective communication, good strategic vision and creative thinking, the ability to exercise good, independent judgement.

We are looking for new Trustees: Elmbridge CAN is a community-based, volunteer-powered charity, based in Elmbridge, Surrey, UK. We aim to build a culture of welcome to all displaced people within our local area and support them as they build new lives here.

We were formed in 2016 in the midst of the Syrian refugee crisis and have grown significantly to meet the needs of further arrivals, particularly those people displaced by the withdrawal of US and European forces from Afghanistan and those who have left Ukraine following the Russian invasion. We have a small paid staff team (equivalent to 5 FTE), and a volunteer board of 6 trustees. We have over 80 active volunteers and support approximately 300 displaced families, all of whom have been through their own unique and difficult journey.  Our work includes running community ESOL classes and local drop-in hubs, and supporting a number of individual one-to-one volunteer placements where community members help with job searching, homework help, local orientation and much more.

We are now looking to increase the size and scope of our Trustee Board to reflect and consolidate the growth and sustainability of the charity. 

We are looking for trustees who:

• Have a background in charity trusteeship / other third sector management, safeguarding or risk management, or other relevant experience

Our trustees

• Provide overall governance, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and Charity Commission / Companies House requirements

• Are responsible for guiding and shaping the strategy of Elmbridge CAN

• Are responsible for the responsible financial management and sustainability of our charity 

• Provide support and guidance to our paid staff and volunteers

• Commit to attending trustee meetings in the evening about 5 times per year, generally in person but there may be scope to join online

• Have an opportunity to volunteer in areas of their interest and expertise.

Could you join our Trustees to help guide our work?

Our charity’s incredible volunteers help with our work across our four rescue and rehoming centres, at our Head Office in Norfolk, out at events, and make up our Council of Trustees.

This elected group of professionals is responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of our charity and, to do this effectively, our Council includes people with diverse areas of expertise, interests and backgrounds. In return for their time and knowledge, Trustees enjoy the opportunity to use and build their skills, attend a range of special events, become part of an outstanding network, and influence the direction of our charity.

We currently have a vacancy on the Council of Trustees for a  senior lawyer with commercial/chancery experience and, while equine experience would be a bonus, you only need an empathy with our aims and an interest in helping to guide our work. We take pride in our values of being realistic in our approach, compassionate in our attitudes, behaviour, and decision-making, and forward-thinking in anticipating challenge and change. The successful person will be expected to share these values.

We embrace a diversity of perspectives to inform our day-to-day work, something which we would also like to see reflected in membership of our Council. We encourage expressions of interest from currently under-represented groups, including people from a broad age range, LGBTQ+, ethnically-diverse communities and disabled people.

About us:

We are a small friendly board of Directors/Trustees running a thriving charity that serves the communities in Exeter and its surrounding areas. We have two part-time paid staff and 8 volunteers.

The charity runs a warehouse and shop that makes a positive social and environmental impact by re-using clean post-industrial waste that would be sent directly to landfill. It’s an Aladdin’s cave of materials offering inspiration for creative and educational projects, and used by a wide range of users. These include individuals and families, creative practitioners, community groups, schools and higher education.

As well as reclaimed materials from businesses and industries, our shop offers second-hand and quality arts and crafts items at affordable prices.

Our charity is entering an exciting new phase, which includes refitting the retail space to make it more user-friendly and provide much needed inventory sorting space.

We meet 6 times a year.
