An Independent Visitor is an adult volunteer who befriends a young person in care and develops a long-term friendship with them. This often involves helping young people develop new interests, skills and hobbies or going on outings such as to the cinema, bowling or just a walk in the park.
You must be 21+, available for flexible working and able to commit to a minimum of 2 years. As a volunteer, you would spend about 2-4 hours every month with your allocated child.
Each volunteer is carefully matched with a child or young person in care in their local area who shares similar interests.
WHAT DO INDEPENDENT VISITORS DO?
- Visit a child monthly and becomes a trusted adult friend to them.
- Provide a consistent and reliable adult with a view to building a trusting and positive relationship with the child.
- Provide a child with the opportunity to try new activities and spend time with them away from their placement. This in turn can enhance progress and resilience of children, by building self-esteem, strengthening mental health, and opening new social relationships outside of the care system.
WHAT SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE DO YOU NEED?
- Interpersonal Skills – Ability to easily build rapport an identify with children and young people.
- Communication – Excellent communication skills, good report writing skills.
- Committed – Willing to commit to a child for at least one year and preferably two years.
- Role Model – A good role model for a child or young person who may have experienced difficult times during their childhood.
- DBS Check – We will carry out safer recruitment checks and you will be required to have an Enhanced DBS check.

You will be allocated a budget for each visit for your activity, and payment of your expenses, are paid so you are not out of pocket. These include, travel costs, and parking.

About this key role
As a Peer Volunteer, you will increase client engagement with drug and alcohol treatment services by providing vital peer-led support and building trust and motivation among a client group that has been historically disengaged/not offered support previously. You will provide holistic, short-term intervention to bridge the gap between referral and full treatment engagement, capture client experiences and barriers to improve service design and accessibility and develop a strong service user voice to inform future service improvements.
Areas of support from Peer Volunteers may also include initial engagement and motivation such as welcome calls, check-ins, peer-led conversations and motivational chats over coffee. You may also offer practical support such as appointment reminders, transport assistance and paperwork support, plus help to build positive routines such as activity-based engagement and supporting small lifestyle changes, including meal planning, budgeting, and time management.
What we are looking for
- Personal experience of the criminal justice system or lived experience of the issues facing this client group (i.e. experience of substance misuse and recovery)
- Proven experience of working in a high intensity environment, being self-motivating, with an ability to effectively manage your own wellbeing
- Knowledge of the issues facing those arrested for potential criminal offences
- Knowledge of, and commitment to, safeguarding practices and policies
- The ability to use monitoring systems to record all aspects of the work

Who They Are
Crustacean Compassion was founded in 2016 to promote the humane treatment and welfare of decapod crustaceans, including crabs, lobsters, prawns, and langoustines. The organisation was established in response to reports of crabs being sold alive but fully immobilised in shrink-wrap in UK supermarkets. At the time, agencies were unable to intervene because decapod crustaceans, as invertebrates, were not legally classified as “animals” under UK animal welfare laws and were generally assumed to be insentient.
The Role

Planning Aid for London (PAL) is looking for two new trustees to help us deliver our ambitious five-year strategic plan.
We are entering an exciting new phase of growth as we work to become financially sustainable and expand our reach. We are especially keen to hear from applicants with experience in communications, fundraising, charity finance, and volunteer-led service delivery.
The role is a great opportunity for someone who is passionate about helping residents to have a voice in planning the future of their neighbourhoods and who enjoys working collaboratively with other trustees to make that happen.
As a trustee, your role will involve
- Overseeing and contributing to the implementation of our five-year strategic plan
- Offering an external perspective and constructive challenge
- Provide insight, challenge, and constructive support to the staff and volunteer team
- Champion PAL’s mission and help us grow our impact
You don’t need previous board experience, we’ll provide induction and support to help you succeed.
Time Commitments
- The Board meets every 6 weeks (usually online, from 6.00-7.30pm)
- There may be occasional ad-hoc meetings, agreed in advance with the Board separately
- Trustees are also invited to attend the AGM and occasional outreach events. We aim to keep meetings accessible and flexible.
- Additional hours may be required as part of fulfilling the role

Finance & Fundraising Trustee
We are looking for someone who can help strengthen our financial sustainability and guide sound governance as PAL grows. You’ll bring:
- Experience in finance, accounting, or business management
- An understanding of financial reporting and charity governance (or the willingness to learn)
- Insight into charity fundraising, income diversification, or donor engagement
- A collaborative mindset, with the confidence to ask the right questions and support decision-making
Communications & Engagement Trustee
We’re seeking someone who can help raise PAL’s profile and share the impact of our work across London’s communities. You’ll bring:
- Experience in communications, PR, marketing, or public engagement
- Understanding of digital and social media strategy, including storytelling and audience growth
- Experience working with community groups, campaigns, or advocacy initiatives
- Creativity and strategic thinking to help shape PAL’s message and visibility
Additional desirable experience for both roles

This flexible home volunteering role is worthwhile and rewarding. Make a real difference writing letters. As a Volunteer Penpal Writer you’ll be a key member of the Letterbox Team. Your letters will cheer someone up and establish a trusting, supportive relationship with a client who might be lonely or socially isolated.
What tasks can this role include (some or all of the following):
- Writing letters to clients
- Building trust and companionship with a client through correspondence. Omega befriends a variety of people including: caregivers, the lonely, isolated or people with ill-health.
- Liaising with the Letterbox Team by email or post.
- Respecting service standards, appropriate boundaries and recognising the policies and procedures that are necessary when befriending adults at risk.
- Making suggestions to help us improve the service we provide to clients and Volunteer Pen pal Writers.
This role could be for you, if you:
- Enjoy writing and receiving letters
- Are enthusiastic and self-motivated
- Associate strongly with Omega’s values and strategy
- Have knowledge or understanding about a variety of client issues including caring, feeling isolated and lonely and its impact on people and society
- Have satisfactory written and inter-personal communication skills
- Recognise the importance of confidentiality and can show this in practice
- Are committed to inclusion, treating people with dignity and respect
