Volunteer Roles in East Midlands

Prison-based volunteers are the backbone of Fine Cell Work (FCW). Supported by the Fine Cell Work programmes team and by other staff at the FCW office, they teach and administer FCW stitching groups in prisons.

Prison volunteers work in teams to organise classes and teach our stitchers, as well as providing information about the group to the prison and to the FCW office. The precise mix of skills will vary from prison to prison.

Volunteering in prison for Fine Cell Work requires ideally a good level of needlework skill (or a willingness to learn), some teaching experience and/or experience of working with socially-excluded groups. Volunteers must be patient and non-judgemental in order to work effectively. As a prison volunteer you will be:

• Developing skills and confidence
• Teaching prisoners to stitch FCW products within the framework of our training programme
• Encouraging and supporting prisoners to volunteer as class coordinators and peer mentors
• Encouraging and helping prisoners who wish to undertake their own creative projects

It is essential for volunteers to support FCW's ethos, believe in rehabilitation, be an excellent teamworker, observe personal boundaries, be reliable and patient to ensure cell groups run smoothly, and have record-keeping skills and have some knowledge of needlework.

Volunteers work in prisons around the UK dependent on where groups are based, therefore it is requred that volunteers will be able to travel to the relevant prisons. Travel expenses will be reimbursed by the charity.

Volunteering for Sense

Our amazing team of volunteers help us run over 100 shops across England and Wales.  Every donated item that you sort, prepare and sell helps to raise vital funds to support us in our mission to make sure no one, no matter how complex their disabilities, is isolated, left out, or unable to fulfil their potential. Our shops are at the heart of local communities – sharing the work of Sense, and helping to secure support for our life changing work.

What your role will involve

There are a variety of tasks that you can get involved with in the shop, including:

• Welcoming and assisting customers, providing great customer service and a fantastic shopping experience
• Receiving donated goods from members of the public
• Sorting, steaming, tagging and preparing donated goods for sale
• Creating eye catching window and in-shop displays
• Keeping the shop floor well stocked, tidy, clean and organised
• Processing sales and serving on the till
• Promoting Gift Aid and other Sense fundraising initiatives
• Acting as an ambassador for Sense; promoting the shop and Sense in your local community
• Supporting with the recruitment and training of new volunteers
• Following new health and safety measures to ensure the safety of everyone

Volunteer Opportunity: Grant Writer & Fundraising Lead – Help Save Lives

We have a rare and urgent opportunity to make a life-changing impact—but we need your help.

At Somali Medical Aid Group (SMAG), we are a UK-registered charity, also registered in Somalia, dedicated to supporting conflict survivors, women, and children who have suffered unimaginable trauma. Our mission is simple but urgent: to provide lifesaving medical interventions to those who need them most.

Through our partnership with an internatioal NGO, we are sending Somali conflict survivors to abroad for reconstructive surgery—giving them a second chance at life. Our partner has committed to covering all medical cost,flights, and treatment, but without an additional £60,000 to cover local patient support and logistics, this lifeline will disappear.

We need an experienced, strategic, and passionate grant writer & fundraiser to help secure these critical funds. Beyond this immediate need, we also need help with funding our core operations and several other life-changing initiatives.

We’ve designed our volunteering programme to be flexible and adaptive to you.  All volunteering is 100% remote and you’re supported fully by our team.  You control what you do and how many hours per week you want to volunteer.  Some roles may require an Enhanced DBS check. If your application is successful, we will ask for a donation towards the cost of your enhanced DBS check if it's required for your role. This cost is £20.60.

Training

We provide CPD accredited training with 3 short courses needing to be completed prior starting your volunteer role.  After, you’ll have access to over 90 CPD accredited courses should you want to study further.

2025 is a pivotal time for our small, family centred Charity as we move into our 22nd year. This year our Board will be defining our new mission and preparing for implementation. We're seeking new trustees to join us to contribute to our new mission and define the Charity's direction as we conclude our first mission in late 2025.

The Muscle Help Foundation (MHF) is a small multi-award winning, family-centred charity, delivering both in-person and virtual interventions and experiences in the UK - these moments-in-time are called Muscle Dreams, designed specifically for children & young people (8-28yrs) with the muscle wasting disease, Muscular Dystrophy (MD).

MHF’s impact is felt by beneficiaries and their families across the UK – from improved confidence, greater self-esteem, and an increased sense of hopefulness to a powerful shared identity that connects families, giving a platform to share knowledge, memories and establish lasting friendships.

We are looking for Trustees who have a passion to take the charity forward, to grow impact, to leave a personal legacy and to feel the sense of personal fulfilment from the time they volunteer.

REQUIREMENTS + KEY CRITERIA

Commitment to the charity’s values, bags of enthusiasm, an understanding and passion for our work, great comms skills and a real desire to want to make a difference to the lives of our vulnerable community. You may have experience of living with muscular dystrophy, other disabilities or life limiting conditions, but this is not essential.

MAIN BOARD MEETINGS + EXPENSES

Trustee Board meetings take place virtually. They are usually 2hrs. Over and above this time commitment, trustees on average, depending on their role, may give additional time in being directly involved in occasional ad projects – MHF Trustees ‘own’ a ‘bucket’, in other words, an area of responsibility like HR, Fundraising, Safeguarding, Marketing, Finance, Digital, Risk or Campaign Management that allows an individual to bring their skills, experience and talents to the charity. Reasonable expenses will be covered.

Role Summary

To bring our vision to life, you will play a pivotal role in spreading the message of Roots to a wider audience through the Firmly Rooted podcast. You will be responsible for planning and hosting episodes for the podcast alongside the team. You will be responsible for bringing these plans to life once the camera starts rolling, creating an engaging, welcoming and student-friendly atmosphere through your questions, style and rapport with guests.

Key tasks

• Content creation: Create a podcast plan and structure for each podcast with Podcast Lead. Creating contingency plans if things don’t go to plan (e.g. guest cancels).

• Hosting duties: Introduce the episode and guest, guide the flow of the conversation, time manage the podcast itself so each one is of an appropriate length, intermittently summarise the key points of the guest for the viewers.

• Guest relations: Create a comfortable environment for the guest and make them feel at ease before the podcast starts. Includes pre-filming communications and preparation.

Key Responsibilities As a trustee, you will be responsible for championing CSW’s vision, maintaining CSW’s Christian ethos, and safeguarding the organisation’s reputation.

You will support in:

• Setting or approving policies, plans and budgets to achieve CSW’s charitable objectives, and monitoring performance against them.
• Setting and maintaining a framework of delegation and internal controls.
• Making decisions on matters which might pose significant risk to the organisation, financial or otherwise.
• Actively contributing to the strategic direction of the charity, and evaluating performance.
• Ensuring the solvency, financial resilience and effective administration of the organisation.
• Representing CSW positively to external communities (e.g. the Church, charity sector and public bodies ).

Commitment required  Trustees are usually elected to the Board for an initial three-year term, with the possibility of re-election for two further three-year terms. As a CSW trustee, you will be required to participate in:

• Three Board meetings each year
• An annual Board of Trustees Away Day
• One of CSW’s subcommittees – up to three additional meetings each year

Most Board and Committee meetings are held in the evening, starting at 7.30pm or 8pm, and take place online. In addition, ad-hoc advice may be sought from trustees between meetings, as required.

Essential Qualities Successful applicants will be able to demonstrate the following:

• They are a committed and mature Christian, able to demonstrate an understanding and acceptance of CSW’s Statement of Faith (The Apostles’ Creed).
• A personal commitment to Jesus Christ, reflected in their devotional life and involvement in a Christian community, including an individual commitment to prayer and a willingness to uphold CSW’s work in prayer.
• An ability to analyse information, think creatively and, when necessary, challenge constructively.

Desirable Qualities CSW is particularly keen to hear from candidates who possess one or more of the following:

• Expertise in or experience of:

           o Charity law

           o Fundraising or income-generation

           o Advocacy

• Personal and/or lived experience of issues relating to freedom of religion or belief; or an association with someone who has first-hand experience of discrimination, harassment or persecution on the basis of their religion or belief.
• Experience of working in or volunteering with a faith-based charity, or the Church.

Location: Remote with occasional in-person event participation.
Reports to: Fundraising Manager / Region-specific Volunteer Coordinator.

As a Champion for ROLDA, you will play a crucial role in driving our online and in-person fundraising efforts. This position is ideal for a passionate individual dedicated to animal welfare who wants to help make a tangible difference towards our rescue efforts. In tandem with the ROLDA team, you will lead initiatives, develop strategies, and inspire supporters to contribute to ROLDA’s mission, amplifying our impact.

Key Responsibilities:

• Fundraising Strategy Development: Collaborate with ROLDA’s leadership to create and implement innovative online and in-person fundraising campaigns.

• Campaign Management: Coordinate and execute engaging, high-impact fundraising campaigns, such as peer-to-peer fundraisers, social media drives, and seasonal events.

• Event Leadership: Organise and attend fundraising events, representing ROLDA in the community. Recruit and manage a team of event volunteers when necessary.

Requirements:

• Previous experience in fundraising, sales, marketing, or community engagement (experience in nonprofit organisations is a plus).

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to connect with a diverse audience.

• Self-motivated and able to work independently, managing multiple projects and deadlines.

• Availability to attend periodic in-person events.

• Passionate about animal welfare and committed to ROLDA’s mission.

• Ability to pass a background check.

• How much time can you give? As much as you want to do. We are flexible and like to work around you.
• Do you like to learn? We provide training for all volunteers that join us. You'll have access to our CPD courses to help you advance your knowledge and certificates to add to your CV.

How does it work?

In 2025 we launched our arm chair volunteering initiative to help us spread the word about our service and to give people the opportunity to take part in surveys and projects to help us deliver the best mental health support to the UK public.

We'd like to embrace what you love doing, whether that be sharing on socials, proof reading, surveys, sharing experiences or getting involved in our fabulous projects.

Important information:

In order to volunteer for knus as an ambassador, you will need to complete a brief application form and a ID check. A DBS is not required for this role, however, if you wish to progress to another role you may need a disclosure. We do this to ensure of service remains a safe place to volunteer for all. Please do not worry about this, we will help you as much as we can.

Training is provided by us and our training partners. You will be required to attend this training using online conferencing software such as zoom or teams.

How flexible is the role?

The Newsletter editor will work for approximately 2 hours a week and attend on average 12 committee/planning meetings a year, plus adhoc meeting with MND Staff and volunteer group Leaders.

What sort of training/induction will I receive before starting?

You’ll be inducted into the role and informed about the Association. As part of this, you will receive e-learning, face-to-face training and mentoring. The training programme will also include experiential and reflective learning.

Across the UK, our 270 local groups play a vital part in supporting people affected by MS. They provide sense of belonging, unity and friendship. And they deliver services and support for their local MS community.

We are looking to recruit a Support Volunteer for the Leicester and District Group. As our local group Support Volunteer you’ll help people affected by MS find information about local and national services. That could be helping someone access local information about the care or benefits they need or giving them a hand with a grant application. See a video about one of our Support Volunteers here.

In this role you’ll be able to develop your listening and communication skills, as well as your knowledge of local services. Most importantly you’ll help people affected by MS to access the help they need.

Time commitment

We estimate this role will need around 2 hours a week. Our roles are flexible and aim to fit around you. Time commitments for this role may vary depending on your activities. This is an ongoing role.

This is a great opportunity to gain experience within a large charity and develop your existing skills and learn new ones. We need you to get involved and help make positive changes to the lives of people affected by MS.

About you

You’ll have an interest in the MS Society and the work that we do, as well as the enthusiasm to represent both us and our values locally. You will understand the needs of people affected by MS in your area and be sympathetic to the needs and motivations of volunteers. You’ll be confident using Microsoft Office, the internet and email. You’ll be able to apply disability, equality and inclusion practices and understand and apply our risk management system. Ideally you’ll understand the local area and organisations that provide local services.

You will be reliable and easy to contact and you need to live in or near the local area the group to carry out this role.
