As a Business Development Manager you will be the front of the charity by helping to create opportunities when engaging small, medium and large enterprises.  The role will provide effective day-to-day management relating to all aspects of the charity’s set up and operations.

The role will ensure financial sustainability by assisting the CEO, Marketing Lead and fundraisers identify and secure appropriate funding that supports the values of the charity, and to clearly demonstrate and promote the positive impact of the charity. 

What will you be doing?

• To manage all operational activity of the charity according to the strategic direction provided by the CEO and Trustees.
• Where required to undertake aspects of business development including identification of funding opportunities, bid writing and tender submissions.
• To assist the CEO with updating and revising the charity’s business plan and fundraising strategy in accordance with the Trustees’ strategic direction.
• Contacting potential partners to establish rapport and arrange meetings.
• Researching organisations and individuals to find new opportunities.
• Where appropriate attend conferences, meetings, and charity events.
• Develop a growth strategy focused both on financial gain and stakeholders’ satisfaction.
• To undertake any other relevant duties within the overall scope of the role, as requested by the CEO and Trustees of the charity.
• Lobby government and other policy makers on behalf of the charity’s cause or client group.

SECRETARY ROLE  

Duties

 The secretary should:

• Receive agenda items from other trustees/staff
• Prepare agendas in consultation with the chair and Managing Director
• Circulate agendas and supporting papers in good time
• Managing the petty cash, co-signatory to bank account, making purchases as and when required
• Member of the board of directors
• Make arrangements for meetings:
  • Booking the room
  • Equipment
  • Refreshments
  • Facilities for those with special needs
• Check that a quorum is present
• Minute the meetings and circulating the draft minutes to all trustees
• Ensure that the minutes are signed by the chair once they have been approved
• Check that trustees and staff have carried out action agreed at a previous meeting
• Circulate agendas and minutes of the annual general meeting and any special or extraordinary general meetings
• Acts as a frontline coordinator to our workshop projects by taking calls from potential participants, sending out google forms, weekly reminders and arranging 1:1 online meetings on zoom.

About you – who we’re looking for to join our board

We are looking for Trustees to join our welcoming and productive Trustee Board - in particular, we are looking for a Finance Trustee/ Treasurer to take a lead on overseeing our finances (c £500k and in good order).

Finance Trustee role details

We are looking for someone with a skill for numbers to take the lead at the Trustee Board concerning keeping our finances in good order, meeting financial governance requirements and thinking strategically. This role is formally referred to as the Treasurer. We have a Fundraising and Finance Committee which you would also join alongside our Vice Chair, who is an investment professional; this meeting is also attended by the office staff responsible for our fundraising and finances; you would chair this committee. You would also have occasional involvement with the office team in approving larger payments or verifying financial aspects of reports for funders.

This role would suit someone with the following particular skills and attributes:

· Knowledge of charity finances and the Charity Commission's requirements, or the willingness to develop this knowledge.

· An accountancy qualification and/or good financial management experience

· The ability to provide, communicate and explain financial information and advice to members of the Trustee Board and other stakeholders.

Support U is a leading LGBTQ+ help and support service based in Reading, servicing the Thames Valley area.

Time Commitment

We have recently navigated a transitional period, which included our longstanding CEO stepping down and changes to the services we provide.

It would therefore be helpful to have someone who has slightly more time available than is typical during this interim period, as we are really looking for someone to lead the Board in deciding what direction Support U decides to move in. 

We are currently having monthly Board meetings (which are usually held online) which the Chair is expected to attend.

The Safeguarding lead will take the lead in ensuring that appropriate arrangements are in place for keeping students, volunteers and team members safe at Roots Academy.

You will promote the safety and welfare of young people involved in Roots Academy’s activities at all times.

Key tasks

• Take a lead role in developing, reviewing and implementing Roots Academy’s safeguarding policies and procedures: ensuring all safeguarding issues concerning students and volunteers who take part in Roots Academy’s activities are responded to appropriately.
• Make sure that everyone working or volunteering at Roots Academy, including the board of trustees, understands the safeguarding policy and procedures and knows what to do if they have concerns about a student or volunteer’s welfare.
• Develop and deliver safeguarding training.
• Make sure students and young people who are involved in activities at Roots Academy know who they can talk to if they have a welfare concern and understand what action the organisation will take in response.
• Receive and record information from anyone who has concerns about a student or volunteer who takes part in Roots Academy’s activities.
• Take the lead on responding to information that may constitute a safeguarding concern, including a concern that an adult involved with Roots Academy may present a risk to children or young people. This includes:

a. assessing and clarifying the information

b. making referrals to statutory organisations as appropriate

c. consulting with and informing the relevant members of the organisation’s management

d. following the organisation’s safeguarding policy and procedures.

• Liaise with, pass on information to and receive information from statutory agencies such as the police. This includes making formal referrals to agencies when necessary.
• Store and retain safeguarding records according to legal requirements and the organisation’s safeguarding policy and procedures.
• Work closely with the board of trustees the People Team Lead to ensure they are kept up to date with safeguarding issues and are fully informed of any concerns about organisational safeguarding practice.
• Report regularly to the board of trustees on issues relating to safeguarding, to ensure that safeguarding is seen as an ongoing priority issue and that safeguarding requirements are being followed at all levels of the organisation.

Action for Stammering Children (ASC) is looking to recruit an enthusiastic and suitably qualified person to join our Trustee Board as Treasurer to replace our current Treasurer who has sadly come to the end of his term. 

Who are Action for Stammering Children?

Action for Stammering Children is the UK charity for children and young people who stammer, their families, and the communities who support them. We are a small charity, founded in 1989, but one that punches above its weight and with Dr Ria Bernard, who joined us as Chief Executive in 2022, we have big ambitions! 

We’re here to make sure that every child who stammers has the support, respect and confidence to live the life they want to lead. 

We support and empower parents, caregivers and professionals; facilitate and champion research; and campaign for changes in policy and societal attitudes 

What do we do?

Information, community and support

We provide resources, advice and guidance for children and young people who stammer, their families, and the professionals who support them. 

Changing policies and attitudes 

We make sure the voices of children and young people who stammer are heard. We work with politicians and other decision makers to ensure the unique needs of children who stammer are reflected in public policy. But we know we can’t stop there. That’s why we campaign to challenge prejudices and misconceptions, seeking to change how society treats stammering and promote acceptance. 

Championing research 

We support and promote research into childhood stammering in order to build understanding and feed into our advocacy work, informing positive changes in policy and practice. 

Our team

ASC currently has a staff team of three (one of whom is part-time) but we hope shortly to recruit a part-time book-keeper and an events co-ordinator, in order to be able to deliver on our ambitious strategic objectives. 

Our Board of Trustees has been chaired by Dame Jane Roberts since 2021. With a number of trustees having come to the end of their term, we have had a number of trustees join the board recently including a new Company Secretary and two new trustees who had previously been members of ASC’s Youth Panel. With the Chair, the Company Secretary has been reviewing our governance to ensure that we conduct ourselves in line with best practice in charity governance. The Youth Panel is made up of young people who themselves stammer and who inform our strategic direction as well as engage in projects of their own. Our Annual Report for 2022-23 is available on the Charity Commission website, in addition to Trustees’ Reports for previous years. 

Executive and Non-Executive, we are a professional but friendly bunch who would extend a warm welcome to a new Treasurer as well as ensure that there was a generous handover period with the current Treasurer.

Who are we looking for as Treasurer?

We would like to attract a qualified accountant, perhaps still working, perhaps recently retired. You might have a personal connection to stammering but this is not required. Your interest, enthusiasm and experience are the most important.

Role description of the Treasurer

Purpose

• To monitor the financial matters of the organisation and report to the Board of trustees at regular intervals on its financial health in line with good practice and in accordance with the governing document and legal requirements
• To oversee arrangements for risk management and ensure that these are adequate to organisational need, governance requirements and legal obligations.

Main responsibilities:

• Oversee the framework of internal controls and, in conjunction with the Company Secretary and Chair, the charity’s policies, procedures and delegated responsibilities in line with good governance, legal and regulatory requirements
• Oversee and review the preparation of budgets, management accounts and the annual financial statements, ensuring that they are brought regularly and in a timely manner to the Board 
• Monitor and advise on the financial viability of the charity, including the adequacy and use of charitable reserves and other funds
• Oversee the risk management framework, ensuring that the risk register is brought regularly to the Board for review
• Develop a working knowledge of the activities, services and products of Action for Stammering Children

The opportunity:

The Scottish Crannog Centre Trust is in transition from the old, low-key to the new sector leading, sector-shaping organisation.  It is at a pivotal point between Phase 1 (£4m now complete) and Phase 2 (£12m with a new purpose-built museum).  It’s this huge achievement to date, coupled with more to come, that highlights the need for a board refresh with a new Chair.

This is the right time for change!

Now recovered from the devastating fire that broke out in In June 2021, the Scottish Crannog Centre Trust is keen to engage a new Chair who offers the skills and experience needed to help Crannog further its vision and offer support to the Executive team.

Chair

Crannog feels that this role would be best served by an experienced Chair, or someone who has extensive trustee experience and is ready to step up. Professional background is open, and the Chair will ideally have some practical understanding of governance. What’s essential is strong business experience for this role. The viability and, indeed success, of Crannog as a business is central to its ambition and reputation.

It’s also important that the role is held by someone who has a supportive, collaborative and encouraging approach, and the willingness to coach newer members of the board. They must be at ease to delegate tasks to fellow trustees who have the right skills to support different projects, and they should also be willing to work constructively with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the Senior Leadership Team (SLT).

The availability of time is also essential. The Chair would need to be able to commit at least 1 day a week and to have the capacity to commit extra time at critical points in the project at least until the development is complete. The Chair should have reliable availability to host discussions, attend meetings and consultations.  This is not a remote role and time to visit, talk to staff, and learn and understand is most important.  While there is now a clear national dimension in this appointment, the Chair should also bear in mind easy travel time to the Kenmore site.

Additional information

Several trustee roles are soon due to reach the end of tenure: the Vice-chair and several founding trustees are now stepping down after six years and more.

Crannog feels that the new Chair should be in post for an effective handover with the incumbent Chair; to contribute to the recruitment of the trustee roles and in time for the AGM in March 2025. · Ensure all transactions are allocated to the correct account and fund, including unrestricted, designated, and         restricted funds.

· Prepare monthly finance reports for the UK Trustees

· Prepare monthly payroll, set up payments, prepare and distribute payslips; deal with pay queries, run payroll year-end procedures, and distribute year-end forms P60

· Set up NEST pension payments, notify NEST of changes as appropriate, comply with auto-enrolment and re-enrolment requirements

· Prepare statutory accounts and year-end reports as required and consult with the Independent Examiner

· Monitor Current and Deposit Account balances and manage cash flow

· Prepare annual budgets and financial projections

· Maintain a list of donors with gift aid declarations

· Prepare and submit gift aid repayment claims

· Enter purchase invoices and credit card receipts in QuickBooks online

· Oversee issue of income invoices by others in the team

· Ensure VAT records are maintained accurately and that correct VAT rates, including standard & reduced rates, exempt and outside scope, are used for all transactions

· Prepare quarterly VAT Returns

Contract: Board Role (Voluntary) -  Part time

Hours:  Approximately 2 - 3 days a month

Salary:  Voluntary unpaid role with expenses paid

This organisation was founded in 1895, and today is a multi-service charity that focuses on empowering people to enrich and transform their lives by offering inclusive education opportunities, legal advice, and community support services. Advancing equality and diversity remains at the heart of this charity born from its inception and the founder’s vision of ‘equalisation’ for adult learning to open up educational opportunities for all.

We deliver our services from our newly opened, purpose-built  Centre, and a branch  in Southwark. It's an exciting time for the charity as we now look forward to fully utilising both our new facility and increased outreach as focal points in our communities.

About the role:

The Board of Trustees is an integrated Board, offering strategic oversight and professional expertise across the three charities encompassed in the organisation. The Chair of charity is more than a conduit between our Board of Trustees and our Senior Management team. The Chair orchestrates support from our trustees which recognises skills and experience, provides guidance and challenge to the management team, and is a visible connector, champion, and leader of our inclusive and warm culture. Our organisation is inquisitive and reflective, excited about learning, committed to community, and our Chair helps us reflect this passion across the group and to our wider community.

Requirements/Person Specification

Working knowledge of good governance principles

Strong interpersonal skills grounded in supportive and positive values

Strong leadership skills including those of diplomacy, influence, and mediating

General business senior management experience which includes financial understanding, staff management, operational efficiency and effectiveness
