Been There is looking for an enthusiastic and experienced individual to join a small, supportive and dynamic team as a Trustee and Secretary of the board.
What will you be doing?
Main Responsibilities:
● To liaise with the chair and chief executive to plan, arrange and produce agendas and supporting papers for trustee meetings and for drafting the subsequent minutes
● To act as charity secretary and ensure that charity law, and regulatory requirements of reporting and public accountability are complied with
● Ensure that all meetings comply with the requirements of the governing document
● Arranging and administrating trustee meetings and any sub-committees in line with legal, and other regulatory requirements, and in accordance with the governing document
● Advise and guide the board on any legal and regulatory implications of the charity’s strategic plan
● Acting as the custodian of the governing document, in liaison with the trustees, reviewing its appropriateness and monitoring that the charity’s activities reflect the objects set out in the governing document. Also, to act as the holder of statutory registers and books, and other legal and important documents such as insurance policies
● Supporting the trustees in fulfilling their duties and responsibilities, organising trustee induction and ongoing training
● Ensuring that trustee decisions are implemented in accordance with the charity’s governing document or other internal operational procedures
● Ensuring the charity’s stationery, including electronic communications (emails, websites etc), orders, invoices, cheques and other relevant documents include all the details required under company law and, if applicable, charity law and/or VAT law
● Plan and prepare the committee meetings and AGM with others as appropriate (planning dates, booking rooms, sending out minutes and other papers
● Minute committee meetings or ensure another minute taker is available
● Accurately record decisions and actions in the minutes and report to the next committee meeting on the progress of actions and the result of decisions
What are we looking for?
Person Specification:
Individuals are sought who have a strong empathy with any body image issues and related mental health concerns. Experience, skills and expertise in charity law, an interest in the well-being of people combined with an in-depth understanding of our work and ambitions are particularly sought.
Knowledge, skills and understanding:
- Record keeping, information retrieval and dissemination of Management Committee data/documentation to the trustees and relevant parties
- Writing agendas and concise minutes
- Knowledge of Charity law and the voluntary sector
- Commitment to the organisation and a willingness to devote the necessary time and effort
- Preparedness to make recommendations to the board and a willingness to speak their mind with diplomacy
- An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship

OVERVIEW
Poltimore House Trust is a registered charity dedicated to the restoration of an historic mansion just outside Exeter. Despite an arson attack which caused severe damage to the House, the Trust Board’s commitment to restoration as a focal point for the arts, business, communities and wellbeing remains undiminished. A new Board has been recruited over the last two years, bringing a wide range of professional expertise and experience to the Trust.
In addition to the House, the Trust owns 13.6 acres of the historic estate and established a popular Café in 2022 which was unaffected by the fire. The Board is committed to developing a strategy for the Grounds which blends heritage restoration, biodiversity and a unique visitor experience.
The Grounds are maintained by a committed team of some 30 regular volunteers, and a campaign is currently underway to increase recruitment. Corporate volunteering has also grown recently and the Trust is seeking further opportunities to develop this valuable area of support further. The Board recognises that, as a volunteer-led organisation, we need to build a positive culture which delivers high levels of satisfaction for those who give us their time.
We are therefore seeking a Trustee with appropriate skills to take the lead in the recruitment, care and deployment of our growing team of volunteers. This is a hands on role which will involve a presence on site for at least one day a week, as well as participation in Board and Committee meetings. In return, you will be a highly valued member of the Board, playing a key role in the restoration of this historic House and Grounds.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
We are seeking a Trustee with the skills required to deliver the duties and tasks outlined below, and to act as a full member of our Board.
The principal responsibility is to ensure a positive and satisfying experience for our volunteers, including their deployment on tasks which make a tangible contribution to the maintenance and improvement of the Grounds.
In more detail:
- To take lead responsibility for supporting volunteers.
- To liaise with the Lead Trustee (Grounds) in agreeing work schedules and allocating tasks.
- To arrange inductions for new volunteers.
- To put volunteer training in place where necessary.
- To help ensure that all volunteers feel valued, respected and supported, and that their skills and energies are being put to good use.
- To keep the Board engaged and informed about developments relating to volunteers.
QUALITIES
The ideal candidate will bring:

What will you be doing?
Job Summary:
As a safeguarding trustee, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our service users. You will work closely with our staff and volunteers to implement safeguarding policies and procedures, provide guidance and support, and help to create a safe and inclusive environment for all individuals.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic
- Consider the organisation’s strategic plans and make sure they reflect safeguarding legislation and expectations of the Charities Commission.
- Work with the CEO and DSL regularly to review and ensure charity policies are creating a safer culture and keeping people safe.
- Check the organisation’s risk register reflects safeguarding risks properly and plans sensible measures to take.
- Make sure there is space on the agenda for safeguarding reports and help trustees understand and challenge those reports.
Effective policy and practice
- Make sure there is a 6 monthly review of safeguarding policies and procedures.
- Understand the monitoring your charity does to see whether policies and procedures are effective.
- Learn from case reviews locally and nationally, to improve your organisation’s policies/procedures.
- Oversee safeguarding allegations against staff or volunteers, together with CEO and DSL.
- Be a point of contact for staff or volunteers if someone wishes to complain about a lack of action in relation to safeguarding concerns.
Creating the right culture
- Champion safeguarding throughout the organisation.
- Attend relevant safeguarding training events (virtually)
- Support the trustees in developing their individual and collective understanding of safeguarding.
- Support regular safeguarding updates for staff, volunteers and beneficiaries.
- Make sure you have ways of gathering the views of staff and volunteers in relation to safeguarding and sharing these with the board.
What are we looking for?
- Qualifications and Experience:
- 5+ years experience in safeguarding, ideally within a mental health/charity setting (essential)
- Previous trustee/governance experience is not essential but would be desirable.
- Knowledge of relevant safeguarding legislation/policies/procedures.
- Commitment to promoting positive body image and mental well-being.
- Understanding of the unique challenges faced by individuals with body image issues and related disorders would be beneficial.
- Skills: Strong strategic thinking, leadership, and decision-making abilities. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
- Commitment: Ability to commit time for board meetings, committee involvement, and preparation work. Expected to attend quarterly board meetings and contribute to special projects as needed

What the Company secretary role entails:
- The company secretary’s role is generally to make sure the charity follows company law.
- Company secretary may also produce legal documents for the charity as authorised by the board.

The Board of Trustees is ultimately responsible for directing the affairs of AVP Britain, and ensuring that it is solvent, well-run, and meeting the needs for which it has been set up. The Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) serves people who want to handle conflict well without using or suffering violence, whether physical or psychological. Our trained volunteer facilitators deliver intensive, low-cost, conflict-resolution skills workshops in the community, in prisons and in other settings. We reach diverse communities, attracting people from across a wide spectrum of ages, ethnic backgrounds and socio-economic backgrounds.

The world's first bricks-and-mortar museum dedicated to vaginas, vulvas and the gynaecological anatomy are recruiting a Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees.
As Treasurer, your responsibilities will be:
- Attend monthly Board meetings and an annual planning day

We're looking for a treasurer to join our scaling charity! Beyond that, you would be required to collaborate on certain statutory duties (listed below), and to provide advice and guidance throughout Alike’s new initiatives. The power of our board lies in a diversity of viewpoints, so your unique combination of specialist knowledge, skills and experiences is key to success in this role.
We would expect you to contribute this set of skills to the board’s shared responsibility: making sound decisions for the charity’s direction. This would include - but by no means be limited to - scrutinising board papers, leading meetings, chairing discussions and taking an active role in board meetings.
Time Commitment:
- Regular board meetings (6 per year, 3 in-person meetings, 3 virtual)

- An understanding of the challenges faced by those living with cancer and the impact of emerging technology in addressing these challenges

Barawak is the first UK-registered charitable organisation dedicated to uplifting and empowering the Afro-Hebrew community in the UK. We understand the unique challenges faced by our community, and we are here to provide support, resources, and opportunities to help overcome these hurdles.

We're dedicated to ensuring that everyone has access to the essentials – from food and toiletries to vital services. But our goals go beyond just meeting basic needs. We are also here to open doors to new opportunities through education and skill-building, helping our community members to stand tall and secure a better future for themselves and their families.

Understanding the Verticals at Barawak
Imagine Barawak as a living, thriving tree. Our verticals are like the main branches—each one strong and important, reaching out in its own direction but all connected to the same trunk, our community's mission. These four powerhouse teams each have a special job:
• The Fundraising and Financial Management vertical covers fundraising and money matters: This team is all about finding resources—like getting donations and grants—to keep our programmes strong and healthy.They will spend their time writing fantastic letters, sponsorship proposals and funding requests on behalf of Barawak as a whole, but also (supporting programme leads) to specific organisations for Barawak service lines.
• The Strategic Partnership Development and Collaboration vertical covers building bridges: They're the connectors, making friends with other groups, businesses, and everyone who can help us grow.
• The Volunteer Engagement vertical covers welcoming our helpers: This bunch is in charge of gathering our most valuable resource—people like you who want to volunteer and make a difference.
• The Marketing Outreach and Advocacy vertical covers spreading the word: They tell our story far and wide, making sure everyone knows what we're up to and how they can join in.
Each vertical team works in two distinct ways: the first way is for Barawak as a whole, and the second way is in support of each Barawak service, feeding our programmes, like roots bringing water and nutrients to the branches. Whether it's Poverty Relief, Education, Employment Support, Community Engagement or Sports and Wellness, these verticals give the support each programme needs to blossom and bear fruit. Working together, they make sure we're all pushing in the same direction—towards a future where our community stands tall and proud.
Introduction to the Strategic Partnership Lead Role
The Strategic Partnership Lead is crucial in forging strong connections and building strategic alliances. This role focuses on nurturing relationships that support Barawak’s overall mission and each unique programme, ensuring the organisation's growth and the successful delivery of its objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
Trustee Support:
• Act as the primary liaison between the Board of Trustees and potential partners.
• Advise trustees on partnership opportunities that align with Barawak's strategic direction.
• Prepare briefing materials and strategic recommendations for trustees on collaboration efforts.
• Coordinate with trustees to identify partnership needs and priorities across all service lines.
Barawak-wide Partnership Development:
• Develop and implement a comprehensive partnership strategy for Barawak as a whole.
• Identify and engage with local, regional, and global organizations, businesses, councils, and government entities.
• Cultivate relationships that lead to resource sharing, joint initiatives, and co-created programmes.
• Secure commitments and formalize agreements that provide sustainable support for Barawak’s operations and initiatives.
Programme-Specific Collaboration:
• Tailor partnership strategies to support the unique needs of each programme lead.
• Work closely with the Poverty Relief, Education & Skill Development, Employment Support, Community Engagement & Racial Harmony, and Sports & Wellness leads to identify potential partners that can provide targeted resources and support.
• Facilitate introductions and negotiations between programme leads and potential partners, ensuring a mutual understanding of goals and expectations.
• Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of partnerships in supporting programme objectives, providing regular reports to programme leads and trustees.
Strategic Alliance Management:
• Maintain a dynamic network of partners, constantly evaluating and nurturing these relationships.
• Organize regular meetings and networking events to foster a community of collaborators.
• Provide ongoing support and guidance to partners, ensuring their contributions are effectively integrated into Barawak’s programmes.
Reporting and Analysis:
• Track and report on partnership activities, outcomes, and the impact on Barawak’s service delivery.
• Use data and feedback to improve partnership strategies and collaboration efforts.
Qualifications and Skills:
• Proven experience in partnership development, relationship management, or a similar role.
• Strong networking skills with the ability to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders.
• Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
• Strategic thinking with a keen understanding of non-profit operations and community-based initiatives.

This is a varied and interesting role in which you will play an important part in supporting ETS and its growth. The Fundraising Officer will develop and coordinate our community fundraising (individual giving and events) and support the Director/ Trustee in charge of Strategy and Fundraising, with running other fundraising applications where applicable.
The role also involves developing new areas of fundraising (e.g. corporate; major gifts; mid-level giving). Providing new ideas and innovation to support our phases of growth and in doing so be an important member of our team. This is predominantly a fundraising role which may overlap with reporting and data management responsibilities. We hope this position will move into a paid position, once we achieve our targets with the three phases of growth.
