The Role
This is an exciting time to be joining the BPS. The successful candidate will possess the personal credibility, independence of thought, and experience to lead the Board of a major, high profile, national charity. They will have a proven ability around governance, risk and leadership preferably in the charitable sector. A commitment and belief to our values and to working in collaboration and partnership with the Board and the senior leadership team will be imperative.
The Chair of the Board of Trustees leads and oversees the Society’s Board, ensuring compliance with the Society's charitable objectives, protecting assets, managing risk, and ensuring sustainable health of the organisation.
Person Specification
Candidates will need to demonstrate the following qualities alongside demonstrable interest in and commitment to the mission, values and vision of the BPS:
• Strong independent judgment, integrity, and diplomacy skills.
• Boardroom experience as an executive, non-executive director, President, or Chair of an organisation of at least similar size to the Society, or comparable experience.
• Experience and understanding of membership organisations and the charity sector.
• Understanding of the legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities of trusteeship.
• Strong people management experience, including skills in performance management.
• Experience of engaging with a wide range of stakeholders.
• Commitment to diversity and inclusion.
• Strong financial and business acumen in commercial, academic, or civil society settings.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and passionate person, with a background in health and safety, who could devote their time to volunteer with us as one of our trustees at our Tunbridge Wells & Maidstone Branch. This role will give you the chance to influence how we care for and prevent cruelty to animals and drive the implementation of key initiatives.

- Liaise with the branch manager regarding the implementation of any new health and safety guidelines from the Society, or the branch’s health and safety provider.
- Work with staff managers to ensure that the required staff training on health and safety is carried out.
- Ensure that health & safety risk assessments including manual handling, COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations), and fire is carried out and reviewed annually.

We are seeking to recruit additional trustees with an interest in helping others, who are willing to uphold the food bank’s values, and who can bring life experience to the Board. Trustees have collective responsibility for the governance of the organisation and for all decisions made by the Board. They set the strategic direction for the organisation, ensuring alignment to our values, and are responsible for setting organisational policy, defining goals, agreeing the financial plan, evaluating performance, and ensuring that strong productive relationships are maintained between the trustees, foodbank staff and our team of volunteers.
Key tasks:
- To manage the charity’s resources responsibly, including ensuring the charity’s assets are used only to carry out its purpose, avoid undue risk and not over-commit the charity.
- To ensure the Board regularly reviews its structures, roles, relationship to staff and implementing changes whenever necessary.
- To develop a long-term strategy for the foodbank with clear objectives which can be monitored and adapted.

About the role
The chair of the board of trustees (“the Chair”) leads the board’s activities and supports the day-to-day running of the organisation by acting as a sounding board for the senior leadership team. The Chair helps to develop the strategy of the organisation, ensures appropriate governance structures are in place to support the safe, successful delivery of operations together with the safeguarding and wellbeing of staff. The Chair is responsible for the smooth running of the board including the recruitment of new trustees, managing trustee meetings, and acts as a role model in line with our core values.
Key responsibilities
· Provide effective, compassionate, and inclusive leadership of the board
· Ensure high-quality quarterly board meetings are held and recorded
· Line manage the Chief Executive (generally through monthly 1:1 virtual meetings), providing support and constructive challenge to them and their senior leadership team
· Work closely with the Treasurer (likely through monthly 1:1 virtual meetings) to maintain a clear understanding of the organisation’s financial health ensuring that assets are managed appropriately and robust governance practices are in place
· Ensure trustees comply with their duties and the charity is properly governed
· Ensure an appropriate, effective, and representative board of trustees is in place
· Act as a link between the board of trustees and staff
· Work with the Chairs of the subcommittees to ensure delivery of key responsibilities and support to the senior leadership team
· Act as an ambassador for Brightside, promoting its reputation, helping to secure valuable platforms and audiences

We are generously supported by private donors and our retail outlets give the majority of funds, however there is more to be done to educate the public and through fundraising and sponsorship partnerships we believe we can reach more people.
We are looking for people with a background in fundraising on a scale of £200k+ who know how to speak with corporate sponsors and can engage directly with our events team. You will be part of a team of Trustee's and responsible for your area of expertise, which requires an experienced leader of people.
The trustee will be responsible for:

CSN was set up in 1993 by people with lived experience of mental health issues. It has been providing Independent Mental Health Advocacy services since 1996 and achieved charitable and company registration in 2000. This is an exciting opportunity to pass on your human resources and employee relations expertise whilst helping the RSPCA; promote kindness and prevent animal cruelty, reach out to more supporters, and influence how we do things.
As a HR & Employee Relations expert you would be supporting the branch by helping them maintain and develop staff throughout the organisation. You would play a key role in advising Trustees on the long-term and strategic direction of human resources and contributing towards policy setting.
As a minimum, trustees would normally be expected to attend a committee meeting every other month lasting 2 hours either in person or virtually (can alternate). However, the commitment may vary depending on whether or not the trustee takes on additional duties.
Primary responsibilities of the Branch Trustee – HR & Employee Relations
- Advise Trustees on the long-term vision and strategic direction for investment in human resourceSupport the Branch grow, maintain, and develop staff throughout the organisation.
- Contribute to HR policy setting, strategic direction, goal and target setting, and evaluate performance against targets, budgets, plans and charitable objectives.
- Ensure that HR activities and interventions are linked to the RSPCA Isle of Wight Branches charitable objectives and complement the company culture.
- Advise on and help improve management of HR.
- Ensure the Board of Trustees properly remunerates staff, reviewing and rewarding performance and development opportunities.
- To work with the Branch Manager to review current HR management arrangements and provide guidance on HR strategy and short and long-term direction.
- Receive progress reports on HR and any recurring staffing issues.
