Tanzania Development Trust (TDT) has been helping to lift people out of poverty in rural areas in Tanzania for almost 50 years. The demand for our services continues to grow, so we need additional Trustees who can help us expand and strengthen our own delivery capacity.

TDT sponsors 40-50 small rural development projects p.a., mainly in the areas of clean water, girls' education and small income generating activities. It also has longer-term partnerships with four flagship projects: a school for teenage mothers; community development through the training in sustainable agriculture and the provision of clean water; vocational training for profoundly deaf adolescents; and integrated infrastructure development in a remote village.    

Its primary function is fundraising, although it provides general project management and business advice where appropriate. Around half of its income comes from individual donors, and half from Trusts & Foundations. It helps villagers in Tanzania who lack the capacity and language skills to present their projects to international donors, conducting project appraisals and monitoring project outcomes on their behalf. The projects are implemented by the villagers themselves, or by small local contractors.

TDT is run entirely by volunteers (17 regular volunteers in the UK and 16 local representatives in Tanzania). It has no paid staff, premises or overheads, so 100% of all money raised goes directly to projects in Tanzania.

The demand is enormous so we are looking for additional Trustees who can help us to grow by identifying potential donors, increasing awareness of our activities, and strengthening our project selection and monitoring procedures.

The work we do is immensely rewarding. You would be joining an organisation that is growing and adapting to meet the needs of a changing world, where helping poor people to help themselves is of great importance.

Job description
 
We are looking for additional Trustees who can help us to grow by identifying potential donors, increasing awareness of our activities, and strengthening our project selection and monitoring procedures.

We would like at least one of the new Trustees to help us with fund-raising by piloting more innovative and creative approaches. Experience of living or working in Tanzania is not essential, but to improve the Board’s racial diversity we would like at least one of the new Trustees to be of Tanzanian origin or have strong connections with East Africa.

The Trustees will be expected to provide direction and guidance to our volunteers in fund-raising, project appraisal and monitoring & evaluation work, and come up with new ideas about how to help our beneficiaries more effectively. 

They must be willing to use their contacts and networking skills to increase awareness of our work, generate additional income and build strong partnerships with other organisations working in the same areas.

They will be conscious of changing opportunities for the rural poor in the mobile phone era, and able to think constructively about how we can use our projects to build capacity amongst our beneficiaries.

We would also welcome objective analysis of how to improve our own operations.

The position will involve around 20-40 hours of unpaid work p.a., mainly preparing for and attending Board meetings, and undertaking any necessary follow-up work.  Our Board meetings, and the vast majority of our other meetings, are held on-line.   Trustees wanting to add any additional functions to their work as Trustees will welcome to do so.

WK Foundation cares deeply about providing opportunities for young adults from low income contexts through practical skills & work ready training and job opportunities. WKF is a recently registered charity in South London, seeking to add trustees to their board to add skills & bring diverse voices that will best represernt our young adults. We are currently re-developing Nourish, our holistic hospitality training programme, for an October 2025 launch. Nourish provides hands on skills training, work experience and employment opportunities, as well as employment progression and support for young adults from low income context facing disadvantages. We work with young adults for up to 12 months.

The Organisation:

Sir Henry Irving founded the Fund in 1882 with a number of other actors and stage managers. Over 140 years, Presidents have included Sir John Gielgud, Sir Lawrence Olivier and Dame Penelope Keith. We are thrilled that our Royal Patron has recently been confirmed as King Charles III.

The ABF is a membership charity with over 600 members who are from the acting or stage management fraternity. Members select up to 12 trustees from within the membership to govern and take responsibility for the ABF’s management and administration. Those trustees can appoint up to four additional non-member trustees on the basis of skills and experience they can bring to the charity.

The Board of Trustees delegates authority to a number of sub committees, including Grants & Services, Finance & Operations, and Marketing & Engagement. We ask trustees to join one of these committees.

For over 140 years, the Actors' Benevolent Fund has supported actors and stage managers experiencing hardship due to injury, illness or old age. We are seeking a dedicated and experienced individual to join our Board of Trustees as a Treasurer Trustee. The Treasurer Trustee will play a pivotal role in ensuring the financial integrity, sustainability, and accountability of NBR.

Key Responsibilities:

Budgeting and strategic financial planning

• Ensure all strategic plans are financially appraised and budgets are aligned to both short-term and long-term objectives each year.
• Oversee planning/budgeting processes in conjunction with the Board and constructively challenge and modify where required.

Statutory Financial Reporting

• Liaise with external agencies to create the annual accounts.
• Present the annual report and accounts to trustees for them to formally approve, ensuring they have been fully comprised of the contents.

Reserves Policy

• Safeguard the organisation’s finances.
• Regularly assess the charity’s reserves position, keeping the board informed and advising whether this needs modification if financial circumstances change.

In relation to Governance

• Lead the Board’s duty to ensure proper accounting records are kept, financial resources are controlled, and economically spent in line with governance, legal and regulatory requirements.
• Chair finance committees in line with terms of reference and report findings/developments back to the Board of trustees.
• Advise on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plans and oversee the charity’s financial risk-management process.

Time Commitment:

• The board meets a maximum of 4 times a year and the Treasurer is expected to be available for all meetings, in person or virtual – dates agreed in advance.
• The Treasurer will Chair the Finance Sub-Committee which meets on an ad hoc occasion.
• The Treasurer will be expected to carry out financial duties as outlined above throughout the year, specifically preparing the Annual Report & Accounts and reporting all financial activities to the Board.

About Saint Francis Hospice

Saint Francis Hospice is the main local provider of hospice care. The hospice has 18 specialist palliative care beds on its Ward within the Hospice. It also has an active well-being and day therapy service which provides one-to-one clinical and therapy appointments, as well as group wellbeing activities. 85% of our care is undertaken within the community.

These services are for anyone affected by advanced, progressive disease living in any of our catchment boroughs as shown on our map below. All areas are also covered by our hospice 24-hour Specialist Advice Line and by our Hospice at Home team; a team particularly supporting family and friends, and carers in the last few weeks of life.

We have a range of Well-being services including Bereavement Support for adults and Children, and our Orangeline support services for people in need of support during times of loneliness and loss.

The hospice is also the provider of specialist community and crisis support to people at home and in care homes in Barking & Dagenham, Havering and South West Essex, via a nurse-led specialist team. In Redbridge, that community specialist support is provided by the NHS and other care partners. Partnerships between our local Hospital Trusts and the hospice are well established including in the areas of end of life care services, education, out-of-hours consultant cover, shared cover for senior doctors between hospice and hospital and widening access to specialist palliative care services.

The hospice has an Education Centre on site offering a range of bespoke training and development opportunities for our staff and partner organisations. We offer junior doctor training and work closely with Southbank University providing BSc and MSc Palliative care programmes.

Our care strategy focuses on meeting growing demand whilst still delivering care tailored to each individual. It also includes an emphasis on the teaching, training and support of family, friends and our health and care partners and providers.

About the roles

This is an incredibly exciting time to join the hospice, having recently welcomed our new Chief Executive — and with many exciting priorities underway including; a renovation and major upgrade of our ward unit, a continued focus on service quality and innovation, a new people strategy and an ambition to achieve even greater financial sustainability.

Who we are.

Foundations was formed in December 2022 when The Early Intervention Foundation (EIF) and What Works for Children’s Social Care (WWCSC) formally merged, bringing together two sister organisations with a shared mission to use high-quality evidence to improve the lives of vulnerable children.

Foundations reflects the best of the two previous charities and focuses on providing support at the earliest possible stage, remaining deeply rooted in children’s social care practice. By bringing together the talents of both organisations, they have created a unified new team focused on delivering an exciting new strategy.

Over the next five years, Foundations will prioritise five major themes, with an eye always on generating actionable findings that can shape and improve services. These five areas are:

• Supporting parenting
• Strengthening family networks
• Domestic abuse
• Relationships for care experienced people and the service and practice models that underpin all of this
• Service and practice models

This strategy means that Foundations will make long-term investments to find out what works in these fields, focusing on depth over breadth.

Who we are looking for.

The Chair is central to Foundations’s work. They will lead the Board and Chief Executive to ensure Foundations is a high-impact charity, able to generate and champion actionable evidence that improves services to support family relationships for the most vulnerable children.

Foundations need a chair adept at forming and maintaining positive connections and networks in support of the work. The new Chair will be equally at home in conversation with families and frontline services as with the media, funders, or government.

The Chair needs to nurture a light-process, high-impact culture for an organisation increasingly focused and determined to generate actionable evidence about what works.

Foundations’s Chair will:

• Ensure the charity delivers the strategy that Trustees are committed to and that there is continuity in delivering a high-performance culture.
• Lead Trustees in holding the executive team to account for the charity’s mission, providing support and challenge.
• Act as a spokesperson and ambassador – representing Foundations where needed in meetings with central government officials and Ministers, chairing events and developing relationships with people who can help us achieve our impact.
• Review objectives and key results for the Chief Executive, providing coaching support, feeding back on their performance and leading on Chief Executive recruitment if there is a vacancy.
• Facilitate Trustees to actively participate, share divergent views and reach decisions as part of the organisation’s governance. Ensure that the business of Board committees is performed well by respective committee chairs.
• Chair meetings of the Board so they are conducted efficiently and effectively, ensuring that the charity is properly governed.
• Ensure the Board fulfils its duties to ensure the sound financial health of the charity and that the Board’s performance is best serving the impact Foundations is working to achieve.

The new Chair will have:

• Deep interest and personal commitment to improving the quality of foundational relationships for the most vulnerable children.
• Knowledge of the political and policy context of early intervention and children’s social care.
• Extensive experience successfully leading an organisation in a relevant field, with the ability to share this experience as a coach and mentor.
• Act as a prominent and credible public voice for a field of social policy or research and a persuasive champion for causes.
•  Experience of contributing to a high-performing board and organisational governance, recognising the boundary between the role of trustees and an executive team.
• Understanding of the financial, structural, and people dimensions of leading an organisation and a commitment to a culture of excellent performance.
• Familiarity with What Works Centres and a commitment to high-quality impact evaluations, and the important role of Randomised Controlled Trials.
• Ability to build relationships with senior stakeholders across a wide range of organisations, including government, to secure sustainable funding.
• Demonstrable experience of promoting equality, diversity and inclusion.
