Trustee Board Member Volunteer Roles in London
Iprovision is the benevolent fund of The Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR). Iprovision is currently looking for new volunteers to join its Board of Trustees.
You don’t need to be a member of the CIPR to become a Trustee of Iprovision, but you do need to be willing to donate your time – and your understanding of the challenges life can throw at us – to consider the plight of those less fortunate.
The role Iprovision plays in helping members in need is really important. For example, Iprovision provides the funding for the CIPR’s mental health hotline that gives members access to expert advice and online materials. CIPR members coping with stress, with job loss, family illnesses or other challenges can turn to Iprovision for expert advice, counselling and, in many cases, financial support. To mark CIPR’s 75th anniversary we also established an education fund to help people get into the PR profession. We plan to continue with this fund in future years.
As a registered charity, Iprovision is led by its small board of up to 12 volunteer Trustees who consider the applications from CIPR members for support. Based on advice from a professional Support worker – the Trustees make the final decision on the type and level of support to be provided. This might be a straight cash grant, or the Trustees might elect to pay for some training and coaching to help someone get back into employment.
Each applicant for support is presented to the Trustees anonymously, and decisions are taken purely on the facts presented, the situation being experienced, and the types of support that are available.
As a charity, Iprovision depends for its funding purely on the voluntary annual donations that some members pay on top of their CIPR subscriptions, and fundraising activity and events.
The Trustees have a vital role to play – driving awareness of the fund, arranging and supporting fundraising activity, and of course considering applications for support. The Trustees meet four times a year (mix of in person and hybrid meetings), and are responsible for ensuring that the charity manages its funds wisely.
Knowledge, experience and attributes
Charitable Trustees have a general obligation to:
- Act in the charity’s best interests
- Manage the charity’s resources responsibly
- Act with reasonable care and skill.
Trustees should understand the purpose and activities of the charity and ensure they are in line, and complying with the governance documents (the Memorandum and Articles of Association).
We are particularly keen to hear from people with experience or knowledge of:
- Finance and managing finances
- Supporting people with financial advice and assistance
- Digital marketing, branding and fundraising.
Support & Training
We will provide opportunities for you to learn new skills and grow your expertise as we develop our plans. We encourage a culture of learning amongst our trustees, encourage and support them to develop existing skills, which help you flourish as a trustee on our board.
Benefits
This is a volunteer role so no material rewards are offered. Benefits are non-material and include experience, the opportunity to contribute, to learn and become part of a dynamic community. You will gain lasting relationships, insight into a benevolent fund, experience of non-executive leadership and the rewards of contribution. We will reimburse out of pocket expenses, including travel to attend any Iprovision meetings.
Liability
Iprovision is a separate legal entity (it is incorporated) and this acts as a mitigation to any personal liability.
For more information: see the essential trustee: what you need to know, what you need to do. Charity Commission England & Wales.
Our terms of service
Trustees are elected to serve terms of three years with an expectation that they will serve no more than 2-3 terms of three years.
We encourage applications from all sections of society and locations and are keen to ensure continued diversity brings constructive challenge and adds to the governance and work, of the charity.
Iprovision was founded in 1965 and its charitable purpose is to provide support in cash or in kind for the prevention or relief of poverty.

Applications close at: 9 a.m. Wednesday 21st August 2024.
Location: London and Virtual
About The Powell Family Foundation (TPFF)
The Powell Family Foundation (TPFF) is an independent Foundation funded by investments and run by Trustees and staff who are passionate about improving the lives of vision-impaired children and young people.
Our mission is to support vision-impaired children, young people, and adults aged 25 and under by providing grants to individuals and charitable organisations. We aim to improve their emotional and physical well-being, increase their knowledge and skills, and support their independence.
The Trustees’ policy on grant giving is discretionary and aims to support individuals who are unable to otherwise afford the cost of habitation, assistive technology, knowledge and skills development or activities to promote well-being and independence. The charity accepts applications for grants from both individuals and other charitable organisations with similar objectives.
During our first year in 2023, we awarded over 100 grants totalling almost £650,000. This is an exciting time for the Foundation as, in 2024, we will review our first year and consider how we use our investment income of approximately £1m p.a. to achieve the greatest impact.
We currently have two members of staff (an Executive Director and Grants Manager) and seven Trustees including our Chair.
About the role
We are looking for an additional Trustee with experience in property management to strengthen our dynamic and committed Board. This person will maintain oversight of our portfolio of residential and retail properties and be a member of our Property Sub-Committee.
As a member of the main Board, you will play a key role in discussing and agreeing on the award of grants and the governance of the Foundation. You will also update the Board on matters relating to the property portfolio.
You will also advise the Executive Director, Trustees, and other employees on an ad hoc basis and develop a good working relationship with the Foundation’s property management company.
As a Trustee, you will help ensure we operate effectively so that The Powell Family Foundation delivers on its vision, mission and values and fulfils its legal responsibilities and requirements outlined by the Charity Commission. By playing a key role in developing the Foundation, you will directly support vision impaired children and young people to fulfil their potential.
Our new Trustee will serve an initial three-year term with the potential to extend.
We respect and value difference and seek to create an inclusive workplace that promotes and values equality, diversity and inclusion. We, therefore, welcome applications from all backgrounds especially from people with lived experience of vision impairment.
Who we are looking for
We are looking for someone with a real passion for our work and a high degree of personal integrity to help us make a positive difference in the lives of vision impaired children and young people.
Our new Trustee will have relevant experience in the management of residential and retail properties, either operationally or as a Trustee.

· Strong understanding of the law relating to UK property
· Good independent judgement, and a strategic vision.
· The ability to work effectively as part of a team, communicating tactfully with a diverse range of individuals.
· Able to provide sound advice to the Executive Director, Trustees and other employees within the Foundation.
· Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities of trusteeship and a willingness to comply with the Foundation’s policies and procedures.
Crucially, you will demonstrate a commitment to the Foundation and a willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to your role.
Please note that we are happy to accept applications from first-time Trustees, and all necessary training will be given.

World Child Cancer is looking for new trustees to join our Board from autumn 2024.
World Child Cancer is the leading international children’s charity dedicated to addressing the global inequality in childhood cancer care. Our vision is a world where every child with cancer has equal access to treatment and care. Our mission is to improve diagnosis, treatment, and support for children with cancer, and their families, in low and middle-income countries around the world.
Most childhood cancers are curable. Survival rates in the UK, USA and Europe are now over 80%. But for children in low and middle-income countries, where more than 90% of cases of childhood cancer arise, the prognosis is bleak; in some countries a child’s chance of survival may be as low as 10%. Over 1,000 young lives are lost to cancer every single day. We know that childhood cancer can be cured. The challenge is making the change which will mean that every child with cancer gets the diagnosis, treatment and care they need.
As a Trustee you will play a vital role in helping World Child Cancer to grow in order for us to achieve our mission to improve diagnosis, treatment, and support for children with cancer, and their families, in low and middle-income
countries around the world. As a member of the Board of Trustees you will govern the organisation, to provide a clear and inspiring strategic direction for the organisation, ensure that we meet our charitable objects, agree our strategic goals, and evaluate our progress in meeting them.
Our Board brings together Trustees with a wide range of expertise and experience, from diverse professional backgrounds. New Trustees with skills and expertise in the areas of fundraising, marketing and digital communications, finance, and third sector leadership would be especially welcome as we begin to develop our new strategy. We would also be keen to hear from potential Trustees who have lived experience of childhood cancer, either as a patient, or a parent or other family member. Trustees do not have to be UK-based and we welcome international applications. We also welcome applications from those who are new to serving at Board level and will provide an induction and support plan for all new trustees in their first year as they get to know the Board and the charity. The most important attributes for any trustee are passion for World Child Cancer’s mission, commitment to our cause, and the ambition to help us grow.
