Policy Research Volunteer Roles
Chair Designate & Trustees
Voluntary/expenses only
This is a strategic time to join the Board of TLM Great Britain (TLMGB). We have a strong and committed group of trustees who bring a wealth of experience and expertise but sadly some members have completed their tenure. Following a recent review, we are seeking to appoint a Chair Designate and new trustees with skills in the following expertise areas: fundraising, finance, digital marketing/communications or charity governance.
The Leprosy Mission is the world’s largest leprosy-focused organisation, a pioneer in our field, with over 150 years’ experience tackling this ancient disease. As a leading international Christian development organisation, we operate as a Global Fellowship comprising members from 30 countries. We work with people of all faiths and none to bring about the defeat of leprosy and transformation in the lives of people affected. TLMGB works in 9 countries across Africa and Asia. We raise funds, promote research and innovation, and support our partners to strengthen health systems, provide life-changing health care services, skills training and opportunities for those who have been excluded and rejected by society.
As an organisation we are seeking transformational growth. Our goal is to see a leprosy-free world. Our vision is for ‘leprosy defeated, lives transformed’, meaning a world with zero transmission, zero disability and zero discrimination.
Trustees are individually and collectively responsible for leading the organisation and each trustee should be prepared to use their specific skills, knowledge, network and experience to help the Board reach sound decisions. In addition to scrutinising board papers, this may also involve leading discussions, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.
TLMGB has a zero-tolerance policy towards any abuse, neglect and exploitation of all people. Successful candidates are expected to understand, sign and comply with all organisational policies, including our code of conduct and safeguarding policies. Recruitment to roles within TLMGB includes, in particular, criminal record checks/screening and the collection of relevant references.
TLMGB is an explicitly Christian charity; we are seeking a committed Christian with a willingness to engage and at times lead the organisation in prayer, uphold the Christian values and ethos of the organisation and able to demonstrate involvement in their Christian community. TLMGB is committed to diversity and welcomes those who have been underrepresented in INGO leadership positions, especially African, Asian, Latin American and Caribbean leaders, women, and those with a disability.
Trustees have over-arching statutory duties in respect of governance, details of which can be found in the recruitment information pack on our website along with more information about the role and our work.
To apply, please visit our website via the Apply button where you will be asked to upload a summary CV together with a covering letter outlining how you will contribute to the Board.

About the Role
As a result of increased awareness and signposting for individuals receiving a positive CACNA1C diagnosis, our community is increasing in size. Therefore, we are seeking new Trustees who will take an active role in the board, bringing new skills and ideas for how to support our community, advocating for improvement to CACNA1C diagnosis, outcomes and quality of life and to support CACNA1C research initiatives.
Our new Trustees will be responsible for setting the overall strategy and direction for TSA, as well as monitoring the charity’s activity to evaluate progress towards our objectives and goals.
This can include making sure the charity complies with regulations, overseeing financial management and monitoring financial performance, creating and implementing policies and procedures to mitigate risk, and supporting the charity’s operations. Additionally, you will also have the chance to help develop fundraising strategies, including applying for funding and grants to support TSA’s work. Whilst representing the charity externally, there will also be plenty of opportunities to advocate for TSA’s mission of supporting individuals and families affected by CACNA1C-related disorders and raising awareness for this rare disease.
FAQs
How big is the current Board and what opportunities might there be in the future?
-
The board currently consists of 7 Trustees. As the charity’s turnover continues to grow, they are currently going through an evolution in their structure and the operations of the charity. This means the new Trustees will be presented with enormous opportunities to shape the future of the charity and to play a leading role on the board moving forward. As a result, it is expected that there will be an opportunity for a new Trustee to develop into the Chair of Trustees role soon.
What are you looking for in candidates?
-
As a small team, we are ideally seeking those who have prior experience of being a Trustee at a UK based charity or working within the UK charity sector, who can bring demonstratable experience of navigating the challenges that face small charities.
However, we also welcome applications from candidates with an interest in or prior knowledge of charity law and compliance; the change management process; volunteer management; financial planning, processing and auditing; regulatory or policy issues; data management or fundraising.
UK based candidates are preferred, however this is not essential.
What time commitment do you expect from Trustees?
-
As well as our Board of Trustees meetings, which currently take place 4 times a year, we ask Trustees to dedicate around 2 hours per week to the work of the charity. However, this may fluctuate during busy or quiet periods.
I haven’t heard of TSA or CACNA1C-related disorders before. Can I still be a Trustee?
-
Absolutely! We are working in the rare diseases space and raising awareness is one of our key goals. Therefore, we have plenty of resources that can help you to learn more about this disorder and how it affects our community. We just ask that people have a passion for helping people and improving patient outcomes.
Benefits
As well as supporting the charity and members of the TSA community, we will provide you with opportunities to grow and develop. For example, in this role you will be able to:
Develop new professional and personal skills: Our current Board of Trustees have expertise in leadership, safeguarding, chairing meetings, strategic planning, learning and development, stakeholder engagement, marketing and branding. This is an opportunity to work with, and learn from, a new group of people and build skills in different areas.
Take on a new challenge: The role of a Trustee is unlike many other professional positions, giving you the chance to take on a brand-new challenge which many of our Trustees find hugely motivating. Additionally, there are many challenges facing small charities as well as the wider rare diseases community, for example fundraising during a cost-of-living crisis as well as connecting with our members after the pandemic. Considering new and innovative approaches to tackle these issues is essential, pushing you to think creatively.
-
Delve into a selfless and rewarding role: Given the under-represented nature of rare diseases, as well as the challenges surrounding research, diagnosis and treatment, the work of charities like TSA is crucial. We can sometimes be a family’s only support network, so you will be deeply motivated by seeing firsthand the difference the charity makes to families. Real-life impact is at the heart of everything we do for our growing community.
How to Apply
We anticipate that the recruitment process will involve an initial telephone call, followed by an interview with members of the Board. Your application should be submitted by Sunday 1st September. Once applications have closed, we will be in touch in the week commencing 16th September regarding next steps.

About CARAS :
Community Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers (CARAS) is a registered charity that has been supporting refugees and asylum-seekers since 2002 empowering them to integrate and engage in the local community.
Arriving as an asylum seeker/refugee can be a disempowering experience. Difficulties with language, accessing services and overcoming prejudice are ever-present. As an organisation we are committed to work alongside refugees to overcome those challenges, and to help them build their lives.
We offer group support and targeted support work. We offer a range of activities including: ESOL classes; social and recreational activities such as youth club, drama, trips and family activities; educational support for young people; and casework and advocacy support.
Our values are at the centre of all our work

• Justice: CARAS will strive for social justice following a rights-based approach in all our work and challenging instances when rights are not upheld in wider society
• Empowerment: CARAS works alongside people, recognising and respecting their skills and strengths and striving together for better outcomes
• ‘With’ not ‘for’: CARAS will put the voices, opinions, experiences and needs of its beneficiaries at the heart of all that we do
About CARAS casework:
CARAS works with adults and young people of a refugee and asylum seeker background to find solutions to their problems. There are two separate sub-teams within the Casework team; young people and adults. At Phoenix we use our expertise to support people in their personal recovery and to improve their lives. We are dedicated to advocating for people who are often overlooked and stigmatised, to ensure they have a fair chance to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. Our aim is for everyone to be able to achieve their potential for themselves, their families, and communities.
For too long women have had to fit into a treatment system that doesn’t work for them, we believe effective treatment must meet the specific gendered needs of women. That is why we developed Ophelia House a specialist trauma-responsive service exclusively for women.
We are looking to appoint a new trustee to our Ophelia House at the Ley Community Subsidiary Board.
The Ley Community was established as a charity in 1973 and functioned as an independent therapeutic community until 2022 when after joining the Phoenix Group it was transformed the service into a specialist trauma-responsive service exclusively for women.
Along with a keen interest in specialist provision for women, we would welcome people with a range of lived and professional experience, including researchers, academics and people working in the field of trauma or criminal justice. A connection to Oxford would also be welcome.
Ideally our new trustee will come with an understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship. Previous experience of being a trustee is not essential.
Board members are expected to attend all Board meetings (5 times a year) which are held in Oxford. Phoenix Futures does not remunerate Board members but out of pocket expenses are reimbursed.
Full details of responsibilities and the person specification required can be found by downloading the candidate brief.
The closing date for applications is 30th July 2024.
We anticipate the interviews will be held in the summer and will be in person in Oxford.
We use our expertise to support people in their personal recovery and to improve their lives.

Are you passionate about driving positive change for single parents and their children? Do you have the vision and leadership skills to help shape the future of the only national charity dedicated to supporting single parents to overcome disadvantage, inequality, and injustice? Gingerbread is looking for a dynamic and experienced leader to join as Chair.
Applications close on Monday 19th August.
About Gingerbread.
Gingerbread is the leading charity working with single parent families. With single parent families making up 25% of all families in the UK, our mission is more critical than ever. Increasingly, these parents and families face significant challenges during the cost-of-living crisis, including poverty, housing instability, high childcare costs, and an inadequate welfare system. Single parents tell us they feel forgotten by policymakers or even discriminated against, and in the run-up to the General Election, we are hearing political parties offer various solutions, but it is crucial that the voices of single parents are heard. We provide expert advice and practical support and campaign for policy changes that improve the lives of single parents. Our vision is a society where all single parents and their children can thrive.
Our strategic priorities.
Our strategy for 2022-2030 focuses on several key areas identified through extensive research and engagement with single parents. These include addressing the cost-of-living crisis and ensuring single parents can access adequate income and financial support. We want to provide mental health support and tackle issues of isolation and loneliness through wellbeing. We are advocating for flexible employment opportunities and affordable, accessible childcare. We are challenging discrimination and negative attitudes towards single parents and influencing policy changes.
Why this role matters.
Single parents face unique challenges and are disproportionately affected by poverty, discrimination, and social isolation. At Gingerbread, we are committed to addressing these issues through direct support, advocacy, and systemic change. By joining our Board as Chair, you will play a pivotal role in guiding our strategic direction and ensuring that we can continue to provide vital services and support to those who need it most whilst campaigning for change.
Key qualities we are looking for.
We are looking for a visionary leader who can inspire and guide our Board and team to achieve our goals and ensure our charity is sustainable for the future. Our new Chair will provide robust support while offering constructive challenge to drive our charity forward. Our Chair will have a proven ability to lead and manage change, adeptly guiding us through transformative periods. The Chair will bring solid knowledge and understanding of the charity sector, valuable experience in governance, ensuring organisational integrity and accountability.
We are looking for a Chair who demonstrates strong commercial acumen, balancing financial sustainability with our charitable mission. Strategic thinking is crucial, alongside a collaborative spirit and strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
This is a unique opportunity for a leader who is passionate about making a difference in the lives of single parent families and is ready to take our organisation to new heights.
Time commitment.
The Board meets quarterly for 2-3 hours, usually in central London, with an annual strategy away day. The overall time commitment, including engagement with the CEO, Trustees, and other key stakeholders, preparation for meetings, regular conversations with the chairs of the committees, ad hoc discussions and potentially attending events is expected to be the equivalent of 2-3 days per month.
Join us at Gingerbread and help us create a world where no single parent faces disadvantage, inequality, or injustice.
