Job description

Chair of the Board of Trustees - The Multi-Story Orchestra

Who they are

The Multi-Story Orchestra creates powerful new musical performances inspired by real-life stories and experiences.

Their mission is to bring together musicians and young people who experience systemic inequity to collectively create music together.

Their vision is a world where music amplifies unheard voices. They create music in a uniquely collaborative way: their songwriters, story-writers, composers, young people, and orchestral musicians come together to collaboratively create music-theatre pieces.

The role
They are looking for someone passionate about their work and eager to champion their values, to join their board in Spring 2025.

As a small and friendly team, they work closely and collaboratively. The Chair plays a key role in leading their board and providing vital support to their Executive and Artistic Directors.

With their rapid growth in recent years, they’re seeking a Chair who can help ensure their governance processes remain effective and that they continue to meet their charitable and funding commitments.

The Chair will also oversee the development of succession planning for their founder Artistic Director, as they look towards the next stage of the organisation’s development.

The role requires a commitment of 1-2 days per month, alongside four board meetings per year. This includes regular check-ins with the Artistic Director, Executive Director, and fellow trustees.

They’re flexible on the length of the initial term, though they suggest three years.

They’re also open to this being a Co-Chair position, so please let them know in your application if you’re interested in applying as the sole Chair, a Co-Chair, or both.

This is a voluntary, unremunerated position.

Job Description:

Leadership

  • Bring passion for Multi-Story’s vision, mission, and values, championing equity, diversity, and inclusion across everything they do.
  • Provide leadership and support to the board and team, overseeing the management of the Executive and Artistic Directors.
  • Work closely with the senior leadership team on developing their Business Plan and strategic vision.
  • Chair meetings efficiently and inclusively, facilitating effective decision-making.

Advocacy

  • Represent Multi-Story at external events and meetings.
  • Raise the profile of their work and develop their network through building external partnerships.

Governance

  • Ensure that the Board operates within its charitable objectives, its charitable legislation, and funding requirements.
  • Work with the Executive Director to set board agendas and ensure actions are followed through.
  • Ensure effective governance and risk management processes are in place.
  • Oversee the development of the board as needed, in particular recruiting young trustees.

Candidate Specification:

  • Passion for Multi-Story’s work with young people and orchestral musicians.
  • Demonstrable commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Strong leadership experience.
  • Strong understanding of governance and of the legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities of the Board of Trustees.
  • Commitment to the safeguarding of young people and adults at risk.
  • Time and willingness to get involved, with 1-2 days a month available in addition to quarterly board meetings.
  • Experience as chair of a charity.
  • Experience in work that engages young people.
  • Experience working in the arts, with arts charities and/or arts funders.
