Safe Passage International is looking for people to join our Board of Trustees who are passionate about our mission to champion safe passage for people seeking asylum.
We would particularly welcome applications from people who have lived (personal) experience of having to leave their home and cross borders in search of asylum and from people from Black, Asian, and other Minoritised Ethnic communities.
We are particularly seeking expertise in the following areas:
- UK and, international / EU law and public policies on the subject of asylum-seeking and immigration.
Safe Passage International has offices in the UK, France, and Greece, and we welcome international applicants with the expertise we require.

About Safe Passage International
Safe Passage International (SPI) is a charity that champions the rights of people seeking asylum and displaced people as they flee persecution. We use the law to help them access safe routes to a place of safety and we work alongside them to campaign for change and build public support for safe passage for all.
We have a particular focus on supporting unaccompanied children and young people to reunite with family and reach protection in Europe, although we also work with adults and family groups too.
We are based in the UK, with small offices also in France and Greece. These offices are locally registered not for profit companies who are part of Safe Passage International, overseen by the international UK Board of Trustees.
Safe Passage International advances its mission through five main strands of work:
- providing legal advice to asylum-seekers and their family members to help them be safely and legally reunited;
- holding governments and decision-makers to account on their legal obligations to people seeking asylum;
- campaigning and advocacy with policy makers in Government, Parliament, and other authorities to provide safe and legal routes for people seeking asylum;
- helping young people seeking asylum to settle upon arrival and working with them to campaign on issues that they are passionate about;
- Improving public awareness of the need for safe routes.
About our Board of Trustees
Joining the Safe Passage International Board means playing a leading role in a charity that supports people seeking asylum to access safe routes and reunite with family. By contributing your skills and perspective, you have the opportunity to support them to find safety.
SPI is run by a Board of Directors known as Trustees. The Trustees work on a voluntary basis to uphold the core purpose of the charity, set its strategy, and protect its reputation. They are also responsible for overseeing the charity’s finances and ensuring that the charity’s activities fulfil its aims and are in line with charitable rules and regulations.
SPI’s existing Board currently has ten Trustees who between them have expertise by experience and / or knowledge and experience in the areas of safeguarding and casework, campaigning and advocacy, EU policies and law, finance, HR, leadership development, public policy, and governance.
It is very important that the Board’s decision-making is informed by the perspectives of people seeking asylum. We value the powerful insight that lived experience brings to the Board. We also respect that people’s identity is not defined by their past experiences and do not expect candidates to describe their lived experience during the interview process unless they wish to.

What is a Trustee at Safe Passage International expected to do?
The overriding duty of all charity trustees is to advance the purposes of their charity as well as several basic legal duties. You can find out more about Trustees’ legal responsibilities here.
As a new Trustee, you will be a full and equal Board member. The Board of Trustees works closely with the Chief Executive and Senior Leadership Team of Safe Passage International to achieve its mission, and is responsible for providing support, guidance, and decisions in the following areas:
- Leadership: appointing the Chief Executive, supporting them in their role and holding them accountable.
- Accountability: ensuring that Safe Passage International is transparent and accountable to the public, our beneficiaries, and our donors about the way we carry out our mission and the way we spend the funds our supporters entrust to us.
- Strategic thinking: helping the charity to set goals and objectives, and work towards achieving them.
- Financial Oversight: including a formal review of the charity’s annual budget and supporting the Senior Leadership Team in financial management and organisation.
- Fundraising: including helping the charity to gain access to potential donors and supporters and providing general advice on areas of fundraising.
- Guidance and Support: including advising, where appropriate, the Chief Executive and Senior Leadership Team in areas such as employee management, strategic choices, and legal requirements.
Time Commitment and Expectations: If selected to join Safe Passage Internationals Board of Trustees, you will be expected to:
- Attend a range of training sessions prior to your first board meeting
- Attend 4 Board Meetings per year, plus one Strategy Day (in person where possible, otherwise electronically).
- Read required Board documents before each meeting and be ready to ask questions and actively contribute to the Board’s discussion
- If requested, ad-hoc meetings on particular subjects
- Join a sub-committee to contribute to a specific area
- Attend occasional meetings with members of the public, for example with Safe Passage International’s supporters, or with politicians and policymakers
- Be an ambassador for the charity and for young people seeking asylum
- Collaborate and work with Safe Passage International’s staff as required. The successful appointee will be required to apply for an enhanced DBS or criminal record check, but a criminal record is not necessarily a barrier to being appointed to this role.
Safe Passage International’s Board members are appointed for a term of three years, which can be renewed. Throughout your time as a Trustee, we are committed to supporting your growth and offer access to relevant courses and development opportunities to help you build your skills and maximise your impact
Like all other charities, Safe Passage International’s Board members are volunteers. The role is therefore unpaid. However, SPI will pay for your travel to meetings and other necessary expenses.

What does the role involve?
As a Back Up trustee, you’ll play a vital role in keeping the charity on track and accountable to the people we support. You’ll attend quarterly meetings where you’ll review the charity’s performance and make recommendations to ensure we meet our business objectives. There are also opportunities to utilise your professional experience by joining one of our committees and shaping our strategy on fundraising, finance, services, governance, and other areas of work. All our trustees are incredibly passionate about Back Up and work closely with our staff team to make a real difference to the lives of people affected by spinal cord injury. What support and training will I receive?
New trustees receive a comprehensive induction and ongoing support from the Chair and CEO to become confident board members, fully aware of their role and responsibilities. Trustees are also encouraged to attend training courses to keep up to date with current legislation and to widen their experience. Joint meetings with staff help to build relationships and understanding to fulfil our mission.

Altus Education Partnership is seeking two educationalists with specialisms in primary and secondary (including post-16) education to join the board of Trustees. The candidate/s should have a strong understanding of school improvement, and an understanding of the latest Ofsted framework would be an advantage. The Trust welcomes applications from all backgrounds but would particularly welcome applications from those from traditionally under-represented backgrounds.
Trust Board meetings are held four times a year on a Wednesday, typically 5pm-7pm. Meetings are held in-person at the Trust’s Headquarters in Rochdale centre, although the option to join remotely can be facilitated in exceptional circumstances. Occasionally meetings will be held at one of the schools to align with Trustee site visits. The Trust board also have the following committees:

About Altus Education Partnership
Altus Education Partnership is a four school Trust based in Rochdale (two secondary schools, one primary and Rochdale Sixth Form College). The Trust aims to build a family of inclusive academies from early years to 18 in Rochdale and its surrounds, with the memorandum between Rochdale Sixth Form College and Hopwood Hall College forming the cornerstone of the Trust’s strategy. The Trust has an ‘all-through’ strategy, with the vision of there being one 'level three' provider (Rochdale Sixth Form College) with a number of secondary and primary schools operating as main feeder schools. The Trust has formed an eligibility criteria to assess schools waiting to the join the Trust against and are mindful that educational and economic efficiency remain a priority.
The Trust has a commitment to working with Rochdale schools, regularly working with local schools in various supporting capacities. The Trust is due to expand to five schools in 2025 with an Outstanding primary school joining, and a further two schools in current talks about joining Altus. Current priorities for the Trust include focused support for it’s secondary schools, one of which is currently graded ‘Requires Improvement’ by Ofsted and another is overdue it’s inspection and both schools serve areas of considerable deprivation. The Trust has a dedicated school improvement team to provide additional support alongside the Education and Standards Committee.

Time commitment

The Peter Sowerby Foundation is a significant, charitable grant-maker supporting work in the fields of health, education and community, the arts, and the environment.
What We are Looking For
The Foundation is currently seeking additional trustees to join the Foundation and is particularly looking for individuals with one or more of the following:
· experience working within the health sector/NHS in a front line capacity – we note this could be current GP, consultant, clinician or another similar post
· experience in financial management/strategic oversight – especially at Board Level
· experience in grant making and the evaluation of the impact of grant making.
The Foundation will also consider applications from potential trustees, with experience outside of the above areas, but with an interest in the work of the Foundation and its charitable endeavours.
Grant Making
The Peter Sowerby Foundation currently supports charities, CICs and registered social and healthcare providers through two main strands of grant making:
· Good Causes Fund – grants of up to £100,000 in the areas of Community, Environment and Conservation, and Education. The Foundation also has a current focus on the seed funding of start-up initiatives and on supporting projects in the area of mental health
· Health Breakthrough Fund – grants designed to provide larger scale funding to those projects that are providing innovation and transformation in health and social care.
On occasion, the Foundation issues Open Calls for projects in a specific and identified area; however, mostly, the Foundation is a non-solicited funder and goes out to the charitable sector to seek out projects of interest in its key areas of strategy.
Principles
In keeping with the wishes and personal character of Dr Sowerby, the Foundation continues to be a funder that is distinctive in its approach to grant-making and which is prepared to push the boundaries of achievement within its chosen fields so as to make a tangible and lasting impact. The Foundation also places innovation and influence on wider policy and practice at the forefront of grant making .
In terms of geography, the Foundation largely supports UK-wide projects but has occasionally provided grants to international ventures. Trustees are particularly interested in supporting projects in Dr Sowerby’s much-loved home of North Yorkshire.
Role Description
The trustees have overall control of the governance of the Foundation and are ultimately responsible for the charity. Grant solicitation and directorial support is provided under contract from Cause4, whilst an outsourced finance function is provided by FLB Accountants. The Foundation also employs a governance expert as administrator to the board.
The Foundation has an expendable endowment of some £65M and Trustees are advised by their investment consultancy, HFMC Wealth, with investment management services provided by four leading investment houses.
The Board meets virtually each quarter (for up to three hours) and, from time to time, Trustees are also asked to attend to governance and grant matters remotely between meetings. We estimate the total time commitment to be about four-six days per year.
Specific responsibilities of trustees include:
- reviewing and setting the strategic aims for the Foundation
- reviewing progress against the strategic aims
- setting annual budgets for grant-making and management
- considering operational and financial risks
- authorising grant programmes
- approving and assessing grants
- approving the investment policy and reviewing investment performance and risk
- approving annual accounts and annual report.
Person Specification
The Foundation is seeking to appoint at least two trustees with skills and experience that can help us achieve our objectives, who can bring energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to the role and who will broaden the diversity of thinking on our Board.
Individuals should have the ability to exercise good, independent judgement and provide a willingness to participate actively in discussion and debate.
Knowledge of the process of charitable grant-making would be beneficial for the role but is not essential.
A comprehensive induction process will be available to the selected individual(s).
Legal Responsibilities
The overriding duty of all trustees is to advance the purposes of the Foundation and to follow the legal and regulatory duties as outlined by the Charity Commission guidance – which, in summary, are as follows:
· ensure your charity is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit;
· comply with your charity’s governing document and the law;
· act in your charity’s best interests;
· manage your charity’s resources responsibly;
· act with reasonable care and skill;
· ensure your charity is accountable.
The expectation is that a minimum initial period of three years would be served, with the potential to extend as required/preferred.

Who we are
Alopecia UK is a small national charity working to improve the lives of those affected by alopecia through aims of Support, Awareness and Research. Despite being a small charity we are still the largest alopecia charity in the UK with big ambitions to develop and grow further.
Alopecia UK was founded in 2004 and registered with the Charity Commission of England & Wales in September 2005. Registration with the Scottish Charity Regulator took place in February 2014.
The role
Our Chair of Trustees is responsible for chairing our four trustee meetings each year (two face-to-face, two virtual) and ensuring that Alopecia UK pursues its stated objectives and complies with its governing document.
Founded in 2004, we work to help adults, young people and children affected by alopecia. This includes those with alopecia, as well as their loved ones. We are a small charity, with an annual income under £500,000, working nationally across the UK, led by CEO Sue Schilling.
We have a fantastic and dedicated staff team and board of Trustees, as well as a loyal network of volunteers and supporters. This is an exciting opportunity for a passionate and innovative applicant to be part of a small yet dynamic charity and make a lasting difference to the lives of those affected by alopecia. - Clinicians
Given that clinical safety is at the core of Lifebox’s mission, we seek clinicians to help strengthen our efforts in this critical area. Your expertise will be invaluable in guiding our organisation and innovation in anaesthesia care, especially in low-resource settings where safe anaesthesia can save countless lives. Our work focuses on perioperative patient care, so we are looking for board members with a background as a nurse, anesthesiologist or anaesthetist to work alongside our board members with a surgical background and provide an important clinical perspective.
- Fundraising/Philanthropy
We are looking for a board member who has experience in philanthropy or as a senior professional fundraiser. As we grow and expand our portfolio of programmes, we are looking for a board member with philanthropy or fundraising experience who can help us secure funds to support Lifebox’s ambitions. Your background could be as a philanthropist yourself, a foundation senior officer, an institutional funding professional, or in fundraising (including individual giving, major donor, trusts, grants, foundations and corporate giving).
- Financial expertise
Lifebox is a growing organisation with an expanding portfolio of programs. We need board members with senior financial leadership experience with experience in financial planning, management, and/or business development as we continue scaling our impact.
- Biomedical technology
As we continue to work in partnership sourcing devices, we are looking for a board member with marketing, supply chain or development experience in biomedical technology.
- Legal
An individual with an interest in public health and public law who has governance experience would add value to our board.

Time commitment
The council meets virtually four times a year for 3-4 hours, with one meeting for our away day in person, usually in London. All board members join one subcommittee, which includes the Program Committee, Finance Committee, and the Governance & Nominations Committee. Our sub-committees meet four times a year virtually for 1-2 hours. We expect the time commitment to be the equivalent of a day a month, including preparation for meetings, ad hoc conversations with the executive and other board members, attending events and visiting programmes, etc.

Role Description

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

- Have oversight on the management of risk and ensure compliance and accountability with the governing document, external regulators and UK law

Chair - Finance and Audit Committee

The role

This is an exciting time to join us as earlier this year we converted to a charity (from a CIC). As we look to the future, we are seeking to build on the expertise we have established over the last 20 years.

We are looking to recruit Trustees who have worked in charities, or who bring particular expertise, to provide a strategic steer in delivering our core purpose. In the months ahead we will be looking to revise our strategy, recruit new roles and put in place the infrastructure needed to begin to make our core purpose available to more of those in need in Berkshire and the Thames Valley. You would have the opportunity to play a pivotal role in shaping these processes, bringing us closer to delivering the support we know our clients need.
Trustee Role Description
As a Trustee, you will play a crucial role in setting the strategic direction of the charity and ensuring good governance. You will contribute to ensuring that the charity fulfils its mission, operates effectively, and remains accountable to its clients - adults and young people living with disabilities and neurodiversity.
Duties:
- Support and provide advice on achieving Ways into Work’s purpose, vision, goals and activities.
- Review and approve operational strategies, policies and recommendations, and monitor and evaluate their implementation.
- Act as ambassador for Ways into Work, promoting our work and building networks of interested parties who are enthusiastic about our work.

About you:
You do not need to have previous experience of acting as a Trustee, although we are interested in some of our new Trustees having charity experience. We are looking for you to bring the personal skills and qualities outlined in the Candidate Pack, and we would welcome expertise in one these areas: Communications, HR, Charity Law, Fundraising, Community and other disciplines appropriate for our core purpose.
We would greatly value experience of acting at a senior level (such as in a ‘Head of’ role) as you will need to be comfortable sharing your expertise with the wider Board, and offering support and constructive challenge to our new senior recruits and senior leadership team.
