Smart Works is a dynamic, high profile and fast-growing UK charity that dresses, coaches and empowers unemployed women for success at their job interview. After visiting Smart Works, 63% of clients secure a job within a month, gaining financial independence and transforming their lives.

The Smart Works service is delivered in 11 centres across the UK. Over the past ten years, Smart Works has helped over 35,000 women. It is our mission that any woman who needs our service should be able to find her way to a Smart Works centre. More information about who we are can be found on our website.

In April 2022, Smart Works launched a new Three-Year Plan that will see the charity double the number of women helped annually from 5,000 to 10,000 women a year. To achieve this, we will grow our existing centres and open new centres in areas of need. We are well on the way to achieving our goals. 

About This Role

We are seeking up to 3 new trustees to join our Group Board. Smart Works is led by a Group Board of passionate and dedicated trustees, who are responsible for the governance and strategic direction of Smart Works. We also work closely with our 6 local Boards across the country. 

“Over the last 10 years, Smart Works has grown from an unerring passion to support unemployed women into work, into a dynamic and successful charity transforming the lives of women and communities across the UK,” says Smart Works Chair Julietta Dexter. “New members of the Board will have a key role to play in ensuring that Smart Works continues to deliver our ambitious targets for growth, whilst ensuring that we meet and exceed the expectations of our clients. The role of trustee is hugely rewarding, challenging and enjoyable in equal measure.” 

Our current skills audit illustrates that we are particularly looking for candidates with expert skills in the fields of commercial property, fundraising and employment support (for example, organisations that regularly refer to Smart Works). By drawing on their expertise, the successful candidates will be able to advise Smart Works as it looks to develop and expand in these areas.

We’re looking for one Support Group Volunteer over the age of 18 years old, based at The Pelham, Holliers Hill, Bexhill on Sea, East Sussex, TN40 2DD, but some volunteering can be done remotely.

You’ll be volunteering on occasional Fridays, with additional time for administration work.

As a support group volunteer, you will help with the running of the group.  The role is designed to suit the needs of the group, and the skills of people offering support. If you enjoy getting to know your community, working with others and making a real difference then this is the role for you.

Job Title: Event Coordinator Volunteer - Sierra Leone Marathon & Cycle Challenge 2025
Reporting To: Global Challenges Manager
Volunteer Contract Type: March – May 2025 (2-3 months)

SLM has long since established itself as an incredible event that showcases the work of Street Child, enabling participants to explore the wonderful country of Sierra Leone and make a positive impact all whilst taking on a challenge.

We are seeking someone with an interest in running/cycling/adventure and ideally experience in International Development to come and join our project. Whether you have just finished studying at university or are taking a career break and looking for a challenge, this is your chance to make a unique contribution to an internationally recognised NGO. 

Key tasks you will be involved in are: 

• Support the SLM team with stakeholder meetings
• Support the SLM team with race day plans, recruitment & procurement
• Arrange all in-country transport including buses, shuttles and 4x4’s
• Manage all necessary hotel/guesthouse reservations
• Liaise with Street Child of Sierra Leone staff to organise programme visits
• Recruit race day sponsors and participants

To be a great fit for this position you will be a highly self-motivated and pro-active individual, with excellent organisational skills. We are ideally looking for someone with experience in logistics and event coordination, but are open to alternative, relevant experience.  

Key skills: 

• Ability to work quickly and effectively in an unfamiliar environment, forming strong relationships with our local team 
• Ability to be flexible and work outside your specific duties when needed; have fun and laugh along with a sometimes unpredictable environment! 
• An interest in marathons and/or endurance events (whether personal or professional) 

Terms:

Successful applicants will be living primarily in the Street Child compound in Makeni, Sierra Leone, with basic conditions. You will be expected to travel independently around Sierra Leone, and will spend time either in Street Child accommodation or local guesthouses.

Our fabulous annual Sutton Park Challenge Run takes place on Sunday 6th October. This is a small event with a huge heart, and to ensure everyone is included we will be hosting three races – a 10k, a 5k and a 1k. It is wheelchair accessible and competitors can even run with their dogs (or cats...)

We need friendly people for approximately 4 hours to marshal the routes, patrol the car park, greet competitors and supporters, and help us to set up and clear away at the end of the event. 

We are passionate that it is a highly accessible and inclusive event. Whether someone wants to run, walk, or push someone else in a wheelchair, this is a great way for people to challenge themselves.

A marshal is one of the most important volunteer roles at any event, helping us achieve our fundraising goals, and making the day special, safe, and memorable for all.

Competitors are sponsored to run, and all funds raised will support the vital work Midland Mencap does for people with disabilities and their family carers.

At Acorns we provide care and support for life limited or life threatened children and their families. We are a charity, and our fundraising is vital to enable us to continue providing care and support to the children: it costs around £11 million a year to run our care services.

What's involved?

We are looking for volunteers who will come a long to support the Acorns stand and engage with our runners and members of the public. 

We are looking for a cheer squad to cheer our runners on they fly around the course, as well as course marshals to encourage and guide participants safety a long the course.

Lastly we are seeking a mascot who can dress up as Alex the Acorn!

BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF GOAL YC – TRUSTEES INCLUDING CHAIR OF TRUSTEES 

We are currently recruiting volunteer trustees who are passionate about supporting young people. 

Gospel Oak Action Link Youth Club (GOALYC) is a Camden based Charity providing at no cost to our users, a rich variety of sports, music, education and other activities to mostly disadvantaged young people in the Gospel Oak area. We offer training and employment opportunities for older teenage members, helping to boost their skills, self-confidence and aspirations, regardless of background or learning abilities. 

Our Trustees will guide the charity's direction, upkeep, and policies, making key decisions that create a positive difference to our youth. This involves: 

• Overall strategy decisions. 

• Organise fundraising. 

• Liaising with our partner organisation, QCCA. 

• Reviewing grant applications and reports to funders. 

• Board Meetings three to four times a year.
