Safe Passage International is looking for people to join our Board of Trustees who are passionate about our mission to champion safe passage for people seeking asylum.

We would particularly welcome applications from people who have lived (personal) experience of having to leave their home and cross borders in search of asylum and from people from Black, Asian, and other Minoritised Ethnic communities.

We are particularly seeking expertise in the following areas:

• UK and, international / EU law and public policies on the subject of asylum-seeking and immigration.

Safe Passage International has offices in the UK, France, and Greece, and we welcome international applicants with the expertise we require.

About Safe Passage International

Safe Passage International (SPI) is a charity that champions the rights of people seeking asylum and displaced people as they flee persecution. We use the law to help them access safe routes to a place of safety and we work alongside them to campaign for change and build public support for safe passage for all.

We have a particular focus on supporting unaccompanied children and young people to reunite with family and reach protection in Europe, although we also work with adults and family groups too.

We are based in the UK, with small offices also in France and Greece. These offices are locally registered not for profit companies who are part of Safe Passage International, overseen by the international UK Board of Trustees.

 Safe Passage International advances its mission through five main strands of work:

• providing legal advice to asylum-seekers and their family members to help them be safely and legally reunited;

• holding governments and decision-makers to account on their legal obligations to people seeking asylum;

• campaigning and advocacy with policy makers in Government, Parliament, and other authorities to provide safe and legal routes for people seeking asylum;

• helping young people seeking asylum to settle upon arrival and working with them to campaign on issues that they are passionate about;

• Improving public awareness of the need for safe routes.

Sooty, the famous loveable bear and national treasure, has featured on RNIB’s collection boxes for more than 50 years. With your support, RNIB has raised more than £13 million in public donations collected in our iconic Sooty boxes.

RNIB urgently needs volunteers to collect and bank donations received through our Sooty boxes, which play a vital role in generating income and raising our profile in local communities. At Makani, we work with refugee women through the arts to overcome trauma, fight for their rights, and to transform their lives and the world around them. Our vision is a world of freedom, dignity and equality for all displaced women and girls.

We work in Lebanon with Syrian and Palestinian refugee women, and in the UK with refugee women from all over the world. In both countries we run therapeutic arts projects including theatre and craft therapy, filmmaking and feminist embroidery. In addition, in Lebanon we also help women through economic empowerment and income generation, access to training and education, and we are responding to the humanitarian crisis with emergency support for displaced families.

Makani was founded in 2022, building upon years of work supporting Syrian and Palestinian refugee women in Lebanon by our co-founders, one of whom is a displaced woman herself. We were officially registered as a charity in June 2024.

We are a small but ambitious organisation that is already transforming the lives of over 100 refugee women and their families in Lebanon, and dozens in the UK. We have rapidly grown over the past two years, with the accompanying rapid increase in income. We are driven by our passion for a better world for marginalised refugee women.

POSITION: Chair of the Board of Trustees

The Chair of the Board of Trustees will provide leadership and support to the rest of the Board and the Senior Leadership Team as we put in place stronger systems and structures. Key responsibilities will include fundraising, governance, and leading on the development and implementation of an organisational strategy for the next three years, helping us to grow sustainably.

The Chair will be a passionate advocate of refugee women's rights and issues, with a strong belief in gender justice and migrant justice.

DETAILS:

Location: Home-based, with occasional meetings in London.

Remuneration: This is a voluntary position, expenses covered.

Hours: Variable but generally up to two days a month.

• Regular preparation for and attendance at Board meetings (quarterly or as needed).

• Participation in committee meetings and strategic planning sessions.

• External engagements and providing support to the Senior Leadership team.

ROLE OUTLINE:

• Leadership and Governance:

  • Provide strategic leadership to the Board, ensuring the effective governance of the organisation.

  • Work closely with the Treasurer and Executive Team to ensure financial sustainability.

  • Provide oversight and support for financial decision-making.

• Risk Management:

  • Identify and address risks to the organisation's mission and reputation.

  • Collaborate with the Board to develop and implement risk management strategies.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

• Proven experience in a leadership role and especially in supporting organisational development and fundraising

• Proven experience as a board member in the charity sector

• Familiarity with charity governance and compliance requirements.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

• Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

• Passion for the organisation's vision, mission and values.

• An understanding of the challenges faced by small start-up organisations, and a supportive and solutions-focused approach to meeting these.

Desirable but not essential:

• Arabic language skills

• Experience of working with refugee women in the UK and/or Lebanon.

We need a person who can help write Letters of Inquiry for foundations and sponsorship letters to bring in funds for our new initiative. The People's Center for Environment and Culture.

About the Youth Team role

​Youth Team Volunteers work with young people from a wide breadth of backgrounds, ensuring they really feel part of the St John family. Volunteers will help young people develop their confidence, teamwork skills, self-discipline, and generally encourage them to strive to be the best they can be. 

You’ll get a huge sense of satisfaction and pride delivering an essential service. It’s great for you, great for your community and great for our nation, and it requires only a small commitment of your time. 

Getting started

You will usually be able to start volunteering very quickly, joining your new youth unit, meeting the young people and your colleagues and beginning to learn on the job. However please be aware you will have some online training to do, and you will need to engage with classroom training opportunities when available. There is also optional training for those who wish to pursue higher youth team qualifications.

Pursuing the role

We do not have a fixed closing date, but we may pause recruitment if we become oversubscribed - so if you want to pursue this, please do not delay!

If you are not already a St John Ambulance volunteer, after getting some brief details we will first invite you to an interview with our Welcome Team.

When pursuing this role, we will check you meet the minimum criteria and then invite you to a Youth Team interview, after which we'll be able to tell you if you've been accepted for this role.

What we’re looking for:

We need someone with the ability to bring together a wide range of teams across multiple community networks, to achieve national objectives. 

St John has embarked on a journey to ensure that every community and every young person across England will be first aid confident. A leader with a passion for local volunteering and helping communities is needed to inspire and support volunteers on this journey at the County and Community Level.

International Aid for the Protection & Welfare of Animals (IAPWA) is a UK-registered animal welfare charity dedicated to creating a better future for animals in need.

Our first project, established in 2009, is based in Borneo where we provide a lifeline to thousands of dogs and cats every year in need of veterinary care and support. Our companion animal projects and support programmes for other species have since developed in other parts of the world, including Romania, Penang Island, the Philippines, and Tanzania.

The Role

IAPWA is seeking a Paid Advertising Specialist (Volunteer) to significantly grow our digital platforms and fundraising income using Meta Advertising (Facebook and Instagram) and the Google Ad Grant.

This important volunteer role will involve creating, monitoring, and optimising our paid advertisements to drive impactful results for our small charity, including:

• Increasing donations from our individual appeals to raise more funds to support our projects and patients
• Increasing the membership of our Facebook groups to grow our online communities
• Increasing signatures for our petitions to drive impactful change for animals and grow our supporter database

You will be provided with a small, but workable budget and will work closely with senior team members. Whilst there are no set hours for this role, we expect the volunteer to be able to contribute their time flexibly in order to monitor the adverts and optimise them as needed to drive the best results.

About us – the Irene Taylor Trust: Creating Music. Transforming Futures.

We believe that creating original music collaboratively can have a powerful impact on people’s lives, bringing them new confidence, important transferable skills and raised aspirations for the future. Our programmes Music in Prisons, Sounding Out and Making Tracks support people of all ages in prisons, previously imprisoned people rebuilding their lives on release, and young people experiencing challenging circumstances in the community. We have a measurable impact on recidivism, helping people into training and jobs, and on enhancing wellbeing. We work with around 600 participants each year. The quality of our work was recently recognised by the Royal Philharmonic Society with their ‘Gamechanger’ award.

About you – who we’re looking for to join our board

We are looking for Trustees to join our welcoming and productive Trustee Board - in particular, we are looking for a Finance Trustee/ Treasurer to take a lead on overseeing our finances (c £500k and in good order). 

We are also starting succession planning for the Chair role, so please get in touch if this would be of interest to you and you have experience and skills in leading others. This is an exciting time to join the team, as we look ahead to celebrating 30 years of the Irene Taylor Trust in 2025.

Finance Trustee role details

We are looking for someone with a skill for numbers to take the lead at the Trustee Board concerning keeping our finances in good order, meeting financial governance requirements and thinking strategically. This role is formally referred to as the Treasurer. We have a Fundraising and Finance Committee which you would also join alongside our Vice Chair, who is an investment professional; this meeting is also attended by the office staff responsible for our fundraising and finances; you would chair this committee. You would also have occasional involvement with the office team in approving larger payments or verifying financial aspects of reports for funders.

This role would suit someone with the following particular skills and attributes:

· Knowledge of charity finances and the Charity Commission's requirements, or the willingness to develop this knowledge.

· An accountancy qualification and/or good financial management experience

· The ability to provide, communicate and explain financial information and advice to members of the Trustee Board and other stakeholders.

· A collaborative approach to working with others

Get Out There groups are a growing division of Sense that cater for children between 6 and 16 with complex needs. We provide a 4 hour social setting which caters for children and families who need respite. We offer activities such as games, puzzles, arts and crafts, experiments, cookery and sensory play. We aim to tailor sessions to the needs, interests and abilities of the children we support and put pupil voice at the center of all we do. 

As a volunteer you'll make sure that everyone has a great time and can make the most of the activities on offer. You'll need lots of energy, a warm and welcoming personality and to be happy getting stuck in to a wide range of tasks and activities, all of which make sure that everyone has the best day they can together. 

What your role will involve

• Taking part in activities alongside disabled young people. You could be joining creative activities, movement or sports session, trips out in to the local community or seasonal themed activities. 
• Helping to set up the activities at the start of the day, clear away at the end and keep activities safe, clean and running smoothly throughout.
• Helping to welcome young people to the group, find their way around and between activities, enjoy breaks and lunchtime and generally have a great day with the team and Sense.

A basic / enhanced Disclosure & Barring check will be required for this volunteer role.

Your expertise will be invaluable in guiding our organisation and innovation in anaesthesia care, especially in low-resource settings where safe anaesthesia can save countless lives. Our work focuses on perioperative patient care, so we are looking for board members with a background as a nurse, anesthesiologist or anaesthetist to work alongside our board members with a surgical background and provide an important clinical perspective.

• Fundraising/Philanthropy

We are looking for a board member who has experience in philanthropy or as a senior professional fundraiser. As we grow and expand our portfolio of programmes, we are looking for a board member with philanthropy or fundraising experience who can help us secure funds to support Lifebox’s ambitions. Your background could be as a philanthropist yourself, a foundation senior officer, an institutional funding professional, or in fundraising (including individual giving, major donor, trusts, grants, foundations and corporate giving).

• Financial expertise

Lifebox is a growing organisation with an expanding portfolio of programs. We need board members with senior financial leadership experience with experience in financial planning, management, and/or business development as we continue scaling our impact.

• Biomedical technology

As we continue to work in partnership sourcing devices, we are looking for a board member with marketing, supply chain or development experience in biomedical technology.

• Legal

An individual with an interest in public health and public law who has governance experience would add value to our board.

• Marketing, Communications and Operations Leadership

Individuals with a communications or marketing, journalism or advertising, non-profit operations, or strategic leadership background are also encouraged to apply. These skill sets are vital as we continue to raise awareness about the importance of safe surgery, build partnerships, and strengthen our internal capacity to support our global teams.

As a member of Lifebox’s Global Governance Council, you will actively participate in shaping our long-term strategy, particularly in expanding our efforts to improve surgical safety.

You will work closely with existing board members and our executive as part of a staggered transition, learning from their experience while bringing new insights to the organisation. You will join at an exciting time as we refresh and diversify our board and strategy.

As a board member, you will have the opportunity to represent Lifebox’s mission on a global stage, advocating for safer surgery and ensuring that our initiatives are responsive to the needs of the regions we serve.

At Lifebox, you’ll be part of a team that is focused on addressing immediate surgical challenges and creating long-term, systemic changes that will impact the safety of surgery for generations to come.

Time commitment

The council meets virtually four times a year for 3-4 hours, with one meeting for our away day in person, usually in London. All board members join one subcommittee, which includes the Program Committee, Finance Committee, and the Governance & Nominations Committee. Our sub-committees meet four times a year virtually for 1-2 hours. We expect the time commitment to be the equivalent of a day a month, including preparation for meetings, ad hoc conversations with the executive and other board members, attending events and visiting programmes, etc.
