Nicole Ilunga Foundation
The Nicole Ilunga Foundation actively works to combat gender inequality through initiatives focused on protection, education, and healthcare.
The Democratic Republic of Congo's low female representation in economic and political spheres, despite constitutional and international commitments and despite the current prime minister being a woman, demands urgent attention. Shocking statistics reveal that fewer than 10% of women are involved in political bodies, and those who do participate face frequent violence and harassment. Overcoming cultural, social, and economic barriers is essential to enhancing women's political engagement.
Nicole Ilunga Foundation is dedicated to implementing a comprehensive range of educational activities aimed at empowering women and youth, especially those from underserved backgrounds, to take on leadership roles, advocate for change, and develop entrepreneurial skills.

We take children on voyages as readers and writers, and we’re on the lookout for volunteers to join our crew.
Who are The Literacy Pirates?
Through our after-school programme, we develop the literacy, confidence and perseverance of children aged 9-13, who are falling behind in class and have fewer opportunities in their personal lives, so that they can succeed at school and beyond.
Children join our weekly afterschool program, either online or at our Pirate themed space in Hackney to practise their reading and writing. By welcoming them into our joyful spaces, publishing their work in the real world, and celebrating everything they do, we develop their literacy, confidence and perseverance.

The ESU’s speech and debate programmes and international exchanges improve young people’s attainment, self-esteem and social skills, helping them to fulfil their potential and to change their lives and communities for the better.
We are looking for volunteers to help support and judge our competitions, please find details below:

There are opportunities throughout the year, each requiring around 4-5 hours’ commitment from late afternoon onwards.
