About Bhubesi Pride Foundation

Bhubesi Pride Foundation, BPF, is a youth sport and supplementary education charity supporting communities in Africa, now focused on Malawi. Through non-contact rugby, netball and other sports, we help to empower young people, providing opportunities for education, leadership and community development.

Over the last 5+ years, and in the face of multi-faceted challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, BPF has made significant progress helping to develop several core programs in rural Lilongwe, involving boys and girls in youth sports and integrated life skills activities. To enable this, we’ve worked closely with BPF Malawi – the partner NGO we registered (in Lilongwe in 2017) – to assist with organisational strengthening, policy implementation, improved operational delivery, governance, strategy, data collection and impact assessments. Since early 2022, the NGO’s staffed team has increased from two to 11 (all Malawian), 50+ Malawian youth sports coaches have been trained and over 3,000 young people actively participate in locally-led programming. Alongside in-country stakeholders, we’ve facilitated the construction of a unique sports and education facility on a 7-acre site in rural Lilongwe, on land purchased by the NGO, which is being increasingly utilised by BPF Malawi. Alongside the NGO, we’ve expanded our reach, deepened our impact and we continue to champion sport as a vehicle for positive change.

Our experiences have taught us a lot of valuable lessons about the work we do and, crucially, about our duty to Malawian communities. Future goals include increasing our sustainability, improving governance practices and building long-term partnerships which allow BPF to make even more of an impact on the communities we serve. Strengthening the charity’s relationship with BPF Malawi is also a key focus for us over the next 5 years, enabling us all to fully understand, and respond to, Malawi’s core challenges, and paving a more sustainable road ahead.

Role overview

The Chair will lead BPF’s Board of Trustees, working closely with the Chief Executive to ensure the charity continues to deliver on its mission. This is a pivotal role at a strategically important time, for all connected to our work. You will therefore help BPF shape and refine its next strategy and ensure the Board contributes effectively by supporting the charity’s goals.

Key responsibilities

• Leadership: Provide leadership to the Board of Trustees, ensuring that the charity delivers on its mission and strategic objectives.
• Governance: Ensure strong governance practices are in place, including compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. Lead on setting high standards for the Board’s performance and engagement, and appoint new Trustees to bring additional value.
• Strategic planning: Work with the Chief Executive and Board to support the development and implementation of the charity’s next strategy (closely collaborating with, and supporting, BPF Malawi).
• Fundraising and partnerships: Play a key role in helping the charity build long-term partnerships and secure new funding for the charity’s future sustainability.
• Trustee development: Inspire, support and hold BPF’s Trustees accountable for their contributions, ensuring that the Board as a whole functions effectively.
• Advocacy: Act as an ambassador for BPF, raising awareness of our work and helping to grow our profile in the international development and business sectors.

Person specification

Essential:

• Collaborative and inclusive approach: A commitment to working collaboratively with the Board, CEO, staff/volunteers, key stakeholders (e.g. charity partners and BPF Malawi) to achieve shared goals; and an inclusive intent to see that marginalised and vulnerable youth, especially girls and young people with disabilities, are given fair and equal opportunities and rights.
• International development knowledge: Experience in international development, ideally in Africa, with an understanding of the challenges and opportunities in the sector.
• Accountability and high standards: A high level of personal integrity and a focus on holding others to the highest standards of governance, effectiveness and impact – embodying and promoting BPF’s core values.
• Governance expertise: Proven track record of good governance, including understanding the legal and financial responsibilities of a charity board, bringing an open approach to how governance practices can be strengthened.

We are seeking to appoint a trustee with senior safeguarding expertise and experience, this may be from areas including social care, the Police, other statutory services, or the not-for-profit sector. 

ABOUT THE ROLE

The role of the Trustees is to develop Scouts in keeping with its charitable objectives and in the parameters of good governance. We are particularly looking for a Trustee to contribute their extensive senior level skills and experience in the area of Safeguarding and to Chair the Safeguarding Committee.

Main responsibilities

• To take part in formulating and regularly reviewing the strategic aims of the organisation, and in providing direction for its ongoing development, in accordance with the Bye Laws.
• To provide support as the Board’s safeguarding-focussed Trustee contributing specialist skills, experience and knowledge as required.
• With other Trustees, to ensure that the policy and practices of the Association are in keeping with its aims.
• With other Trustees, to exercise effective control, ensuring that the Association functions within the legal and financial requirements of a charitable organisation and strives to achieve best practice.
• With other Trustees, to fulfil all other duties as laid out by law and in accordance with the Bye Laws.
• To chair the Safeguarding Committee which is responsible for the strategic oversight and challenge to the organisation on the discharge of its safeguarding responsibilities.

Main duties

Developing and reviewing strategic aims

•  Consider the Association’s strategic plans and make sure they reflect safeguarding legislation, relevant regulations, statutory guidance, and the safeguarding expectations of the Charities Commission
• Work with the senior staff and volunteers to regularly review whether the practice of the Association is creating a safer culture and keeping people safe.
• Check that the Association’s risk register reflects current safeguarding risks appropriately and has put in place effective risk mitigations.
• Abide by the principles laid down in the person specification (and code of conduct).
• Attend meetings of the Trustee Board and the reporting committees (frequency varies).
• Reflect the Scouts’ vision, strategy, major policies and values at all times.
• Contribute specific skills, experience and contacts in support of our activities.

Ensuring policies and practice are effective and in keeping with aims

Make sure there is an annual review of safeguarding policies and procedures and that this is reported to trustees.

• Scrutinise the performance of the Association relating to safeguarding to see whether policies and procedures are effective.
• Make sure there is a regular effective (internal and external) quality assurance framework using qualitative and quantitative data to monitor the effectiveness of safeguarding practice.
• Learn from case reviews locally and nationally, to improve the Association’s policies, procedures and practices.
• Reflect the Trustees’ policies and concerns in all interactions with the Movement.
• Assist in the implementation of the Association’s strategic goals.

Creating the right culture

• Champion safeguarding throughout the Association.
• Attend relevant safeguarding training events and conferences.
• Support the trustees in developing their individual and collective understanding of safeguarding.
• Attend meetings, activities, projects to engage with staff, volunteers and young people to understand safeguarding on the ground.
• Support regular safeguarding updates for staff, volunteers and young people.
• Make sure you have ways of gathering the views of staff and volunteers in relation to safeguarding and sharing these with the Board.
• Work effectively as a team member of the Trustee Board in exercising its responsibilities and functions.
• Protect the assets and integrity of the charity, with regard to best practice.
• Maintain good relations with Association staff.
• Fulfil such other duties and assignments as may be required from time to time by the Trustee Board.
• Engage with members of the Movement at other levels in the organisation.

THE PERSON

As a Trustee of the Board, you should be able to demonstrate and provide evidence of the following criteria listed under Part 1 within your written application. This will be tested further at the preliminary interview stage, along with the criteria listed under Part 2.

We are particularly interested in applications from candidates with strategic safeguarding experience in sectors such as Social Care (e.g. service manager to director role experience), Health (e.g. deputy or chief nurse experience), Police (e.g. Superintendent to Chief Constable experience) and Education (e.g. Head Teacher experience).

Part 1

• The successful candidate will be able to give evidence of:
• A record of proven and significant achievement and executive background in operational and strategic safeguarding.
• An understanding of the type of work undertaken by the Association and commitment to the values and ethos of The Scout Association.
• Successful experience of operating on a board or a major committee in a charitable, public sector or commercial organisation.
• Demonstrable experience of building and sustaining relationships with key stakeholders and colleagues to achieve organisational objectives.
• Confident and effective communication skills with a range of audiences, including Trustees, the Chief Executive, senior staff, senior volunteers and others, and the ability to challenge in a constructive way.

 Part 2

• An understanding of how to motivate and enthuse volunteers.
• A proven track record of sound judgement and effective decision-making.
• An understanding of the respective roles of the Chair, Trustees, UK Chief Commissioner and Chief Executive.
• A track record of commitment to promoting inclusion, equality and diversity.
• Wider involvement with the voluntary sector and other networks.

Other essential criteria

• Commitment to attend four Board of Trustee meetings each calendar year, one of those will be a two-day residential held over the weekend).
• Attendance at the Annual General Meeting of the Council (AGM) held in the first week of September each year (this will be on a Saturday).
• Availability to chair the Safeguarding Committee, who meet four times per year. Three of these meetings are virtual and outside 9-5 working hours – the fourth meeting will be a full-day face-to-face session.

 APPOINTMENT TERM

Appointments are typically for an initial three-year term, with the possibility of a further term of three years subject to a satisfactory appraisal.

REMUNERATION AND EXPENSES

Read Easy provides free, confidential, one to-one reading coaching for adults who struggle with reading, through a network of volunteer groups. Read Easy groups are changing the lives of individual adults across the country by providing them with the support they need to learn to read, and in turn opening doors for them to all sorts of new opportunities in life. Outline of the Coordinator role

The Coordinator is the first point of contact for those who want to learn to read. Using a simple assessment, the Coordinator will explain to a potential new ‘Reader’ how Read Easy may be able to help them. The Coordinator pairs up new Coaches with those who want to learn to read and provides ongoing support to these reading pairs. They visit reading sessions occasionally and maintain support through regular calls with both Reader and Coach to check all is going well, calling on the group’s Literacy Specialist to respond to any literacy related difficulties a pair may be having. Being a Read Easy Coordinator is very flexible. You decide how much time you have to offer, and this will determine the number of reading pairs you look after. The role provides lots of variety, is home-based and can work well around other commitments.

How we will support you

You will be provided with the Coordinator Handbook, training, induction, policies, resources and guidance specifically needed for this role, including access to support from a Read Easy UK Regional Adviser. In addition, the Coordinator Supporter will meet with you regularly to provide support and find out how your Reading Pairs are getting on. You will be invited to Read Easy UK’s volunteer forums and National Conference which gives volunteers an opportunity for networking with those from other groups.

What you will be doing:

● Help interview new Coaches when recruited and shortlisted by the Volunteer Recruiter.

● Enrol and assess new Readers, using the simple resources provided.

● Match Readers with Coaches, make introductions, and help them organise their reading sessions (which will take place in an approved venue or online).

● Visit your reading pairs to provide encouragement, presenting certificates on occasion.

● Work collaboratively with any other Coordinators in the group.

● Contribute to Coach meetings where volunteers discuss their experiences and receive further support. (Run by the Management Team typically every 8 weeks.)

● Attend Management Team meetings when invited, typically every 6-8 weeks either in person or remotely.

● Record progress of your reading pairs using resources provided, sharing these with the Management Team to keep them fully informed and submit expenses for payment egularly.

The skills you will need:

● A passion for supporting others achieve either their reading or coaching goals;

● A willingness to become familiar with the methods of the phonics based Turning Pages coaching manuals, so that you can confidently guide others;

● Good communication and people skills, with a commitment to maintaining confidentiality. Strong organisational, time management and record keeping skills;

● Self-awareness, personal responsibility and a professional approach;

● Reasonable confidence in using IT(accessing documents, completing electronic forms and records, email, Teams/Zoom meetings);

● The ability to use initiative and willingness to work independently and as part of a team;

● A willingness to abide by Read Easy policies and procedures;

● An open attitude that encourages two-way communication and willingness to ask for support from the Management Team;

● A non-judgemental attitude and respect for others, with a commitment to equality and diversity, so that you can make everyone feel valued and included;

● Energy and enthusiasm with an average of 2-3 hours a week to commit to the role.

Overview

Charity Purpose

• Raise funds for research into the cause, prevention and management of dementia.
• Allocate funding to university research project meeting the highest academics standards.
• Raising awareness of dementia.

Objective

• Holds the Executive team and the Board to account to:
  - remain focussed solely on the BRACE stated purpose
  - remain compliant with all English and Welsh laws and the regulations of the Charity Commission.
• Support the Chief Executive in ensuring both the Board members and Executive team work closely together to achieve the agreed strategic objectives.
• Act (in partnership with the Chief Executive) as an ambassador and the public face of BRACE.

Charity Structure

• BRACE the charity has a sole Trustee “BRACE Trustee Limited”. All members of the Board are Directors of BRACE Trustee Limited and act as Trustees of BRACE. There are up to 15 directors of BRACE Trustee Limited who for reasons of clarity are called Trustees.
• The Chair and Trustees are usually appointed for a fixed term of 4 years which can be renewed once, enabling Trustees to serve for a maximum continuous term of 8 years.

Meetings

• Board meetings are held 4 times a year plus 1 awayday. Each meeting is +/- 4 hours.
• There are currently 3 sub-committees of the Board (Scientific Advisory Committee [SAC], Finance and HR). The 3 sub-committees meet no more than one month before the board meetings either in person or on Zoom. SAC reviews applications for grants and makes recommendations to the Board for approval.
• Board Meetings are generally held in person in the Bristol area, online or hybrid meetings are not encouraged but can be facilitated.

We’re extending Ealing Book Festival'sBoard of Trustees to fulfil our long-term ambitions. We have a friendly, experienced team and financial strengths. Activities take place in central Ealing. Transport links are good.

Ealing Book Festival registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) in November 2023. Its objects are to advance the public education in West London’s Ealing through an annual book festival and writing-related events for the enjoyment of books. We encourage reading for pleasure, working widely and inclusively. We are volunteer led.

Our April 2024 the charity ran its successful first main event, with 86% tickets sold and very positive feedback on the quality and range of the events. The festival comprised 19 events including a great children’s poetry competition. We’re planning for April 2025.

Skills we’re seeking

We’re strengthening our outreach capacity, diversity and enterprise. We’d especially welcome people with skills and experience in

1.Enterprise: fundraising and income generation

2.Working with Ealing (or equivalent) based networks and communities

3.Knowledge and experience of arts and culture

Trustees work collectively, using skills, knowledge and experience to help the Board of Trustees reach sound decisions.We offer induction and training.

The time commitment will vary but could be around 2-3 hours per week, flexed according to what you can offer.

Anawim is a Birmingham charity committed to working with and for women. We offer gender-responsive and trauma-informed support, to enable women to reach their potential. We do this through wraparound services including long-term specialist provisions alongside other practical resources, both in the community and in prison. Role: Chair of Trustees

As the Chair of Trustees, you will be pivotal in guiding Anawim’s strategic direction and ensuring we achieve our goals. You will lead our Board of Trustees, working closely with the Chief Executive Officer and the senior leadership team to provide strong governance, oversight, and support.

Key Responsibilities:

· Lead and inspire the Board of Trustees to fulfil its governance responsibilities.

· Ensure the charity is compliant with all legal and regulatory requirements.

· Support the CEO and senior management in delivering Anawim’s strategic objectives.

· Foster a collaborative and inclusive board culture.

· Act as an ambassador for Anawim, promoting our work and expanding our network of supporters and partners.

· Oversee the financial health and sustainability of the organisation.

What We Are Looking For:

· Proven experience in a leadership role, ideally within the charitable or public sector.

· Strong understanding of governance, finance, and strategic planning.

· Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.

· Passion for women’s rights and social justice.

· Ability to commit time to attend board meetings and events and provide guidance as needed.
