The Diana Award are thrilled to invite you to volunteer for our Mentoring Programme and Social Action Accelerator Pilot this Autumn (2024), which operate across London, Leeds and West Yorkshire.

We collaborate with volunteer mentors to support young people aged 14-18 who are at risk of becoming NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) through mentoring interventions, career skills development programmes, and support with their youth-led social action projects. 

WHO CAN VOLUNTEER AS A MENTOR? 

We welcome applicants across all industries and levels of experience. Through mentoring you will gain skills in communication and leadership, building empathy and understanding of issues and barriers facing young people in their communities.

OUR MENTORING PROGRAMMES  

Based on your application to mentor and your availability, you will be placed in either our Mentoring Programme or Social Action Accelerator Pilot. Both programmes run between October 2024 – February 2025. 

Mentoring Programme:  

• Twelve weeks of weekly group mentoring sessions. 

• Mentoring sessions last one hour (excluding travel) and are delivered on the same day and time each week. 

• Volunteer mentors share advice and guidance with young people who are at risk of becoming NEET. 

Social Action Accelerator Pilot: 

• Five months of monthly group mentoring sessions. 

• Mentoring sessions last two hours (excluding travel) and are delivered at the same time of day each month. 

• Volunteer mentors support young people to develop and deliver their youth-led social action project. 

We will train you to mentor and provide ongoing support for the duration of your programme. 

The Diana Award can provide you with a professional reference, paid for DBS check, and refund your travel expenses in exchange for your voluntary work. 

PERSON SPECIFICATION 

Requirements 

• A minimum of 18-years-old.

• Willing to complete Right to Work and DBS Check (organised and paid for by The Diana Award).

• Willing to provide contact details for one referee.

• Able to commit to weekly and/or monthly face-to-face sessions. 

• Able to attend a three-hour in-person mentor training session.

• Has the right to work and volunteer in the UK.

• Lives or works in London, Leeds and West Yorkshire.

Skills 

• Passion for working with young people. 

• Has developed or willing to develop active listening skills. 

• Ability to see solutions and opportunities when working with people or in a group setting. 

• Ability to show resilience when faced with challenging situations or behaviours. 

Experience / Knowledge 

• Has work experience, this can be professional, from previous volunteering, or social action initiatives. 

• Has developed or willing to develop experience of picking, planning, and delivering a social action campaign. 

Optional Experience / Knowledge 

• Has experience in organising grassroots activism. 

• Has experience or knowledge in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). 

• Has experience or knowledge in Widening Participation. 

• Has experience in project management. 

Responsibilities

• Commit to weekly sessions for twelve weeks and/or to monthly session for five months, demonstrating consistency and punctuality. Mentoring Programme sessions last 60 to 90 minutes (excluding travel) and Social Action Accelerator Programme sessions last 120 minutes (excluding travel). Both programmes are delivered in an education setting. Follow through is key when working with young people at risk of becoming NEET. 

• Collaborate with The Diana Award facilitators and other volunteer mentors to deliver and support sessions. 

• Review session plans and prepare for weekly and/or monthly sessions. 

• Create a safe and positive learning environment and provide young people with encouragement, guidance, and constructive feedback. 

• Nurture positive relationships with young people. Listen, understand, and acknowledge their feelings and experiences. 

• Support young people to plan a social action project. 

• Foster a growth mindset and encourage young people to challenge themselves to work towards their goals. 

• Support young people’s professional development by connecting them with further opportunities. For example, workplace visits, work experience, resources, relevant networks etc. 

• Identify and report any safeguarding and child protection concerns or disclosures to the Designated Safeguarding Lead, as per The Diana Award Safeguarding Policy. 

OUR CHARITY 

The Diana Award is the charity legacy to Diana, Princess of Wales’ belief that young people have the power to change the world. We seek to empower young people, delivering bespoke youth programmes for children and young people aged 9 – 25. Our programmes seek to address three key problems for young people: challenges to their mental health and emotional wellbeing; social and economic barriers; and not being understood by people in power. We work with young people by unlocking their potential, creating opportunities for their growth, and inspiring action from them to lead the change they want to see.

As an online “ At Home” Volunteer, you will be working with people from a wide variety of countries and cultures, all believing in passing on the right to basic education, the importance of cultural exchange, and giving voice to the voiceless. 

The Position: We ask Volunteers to contribute a minimum of one hour a month. Within our Human Resource Division you will be learning to process applicants from around the world, assigning them to appropriate Teams and coordinating the Team Leads training sessions and monthly meetings. While English is required, you will learn to be comfortable with various global accents as well as proficient in your Interviewing skills and background research. You will practice team organizing & management skills. Depending on which teams you join, you will learn non profit contracts, global time zone coordination and other very basic, practical skills when working with people Internationally and online.

 This is an exciting opportunity to join our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) team. As a volunteer you will play a crucial part in helping us raise awareness of different topics. You will write and develop blogs and articles to showcase different EDI related awareness days, weeks or months. You will help us to represent different parts of the MS and our staff communities and increase awareness and knowledge of different issues. For example, can you tell us more about Diwali or shine a light on mental health awareness week? 

 Equality, Diversity and Inclusion are at the heart of our work. We work with volunteers, professionals and people with lived experience of MS to guide and direct our approach to EDI. An important part of this work is to discuss EDI related issues more openly and in a more authentic way. 

This role is a home-based role, which will require attending two online monthly meetings, and up to 10 hours of writing to develop the blogs and articles.

International Aid for the Protection & Welfare of Animals (IAPWA) was founded in 2009 and aims to provide protection and improve the welfare of animals in need. 

We have recently relaunched our Auctions for Animals online fundraising events and are searching for enthusiastic volunteers to join our team to help source donations. Ideally our volunteers will have some experience in generating donations/prizes for fundraising events, or will be happy to spread the word within your local community and collect new or preloved donations for us. 

Tasks will include:

• Identify suitable avenues for donations, creating and building relationships with our supporters and donors and helping to promote IAPWA within your local community.

• Assist with the running of our monthly auction events via our Auctions For Animals Facebook Group, eBay and Vinted shops.

Ideally you will;

• Enjoy promoting our charity within the community and help to generate a regular stream of donations. 

• Have experience of using Google Workspace or willingness to learn.

• Be able to work independently and use your own initiative.

• Offer 1-3 hours per week (hours can be fully flexible)

• A passion to help raise funds for animals in our care

Would you like to support people who have served in the Armed Forces? You don’t need a military background, just patience, and an ability to get on with people from different backgrounds and age groups. If so, this could be the role for you.

What is a Visitor?

SSAFA Visitors provide support to isolated people living at home or in residential care. Whilst a friendly chat about the old days over a cup of tea is an important aspect of the role you will also be able to recognise any other support needs and explore how to link your client into their local community.

Why do we need you?

We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community since 1885. Our clients come from all backgrounds and age groups and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like the Falklands or Afghanistan.

There are SSAFA branches throughout the UK and overseas who support local volunteers to deliver services to veterans, serving personnel and their families. Some branches are divided into smaller divisions to ensure the best local service delivery. Each branch has a team of volunteer caseworkers, support volunteers, executive roles, and fundraisers.

With the gift of time and a listening ear you can improve someone’s quality of life for far longer than the hour or so you might spend with them. We need you to join your local SSAFA team to help us to help more people!

When would you be needed and where would you be based?

The essential part of the role is visiting clients, so you will need a driving licence and access to a vehicle or another way to travel to meet clients at home or elsewhere.

Some volunteers will visit more people than others. Whilst you will visit a client on a regular basis for a period, you will not be developing the kind of relationship where you would provide personal care, handle money or support someone in an emergency. SSAFA can help clients to arrange other types of support if needed.

What would you be doing?

• Contacting clients and arranging to meet them regularly at their home or care home for uninterrupted conversation.
• Letting the divisional secretary know of any concerns for your or the client’s safety.
• Arranging for a SSAFA caseworker to assess the client for other support as required.
• Chatting, making a cup of tea, playing cards, looking at photo albums, military mementos etc
• Helping your client to think about ways to reduce their isolation and support them to put these into practice.
• Keeping in touch with your branch so they know your availability.
• Keeping up to date with training and SSAFA news so that you are best able to support clients.
• Volunteering within the standards and values of SSAFA including observing our policies such as the Volunteering policy and Data Protection policy (these will be covered in your training and local induction.)

The remit of this role may change over the next 12-18 months depending on the outcome of a trial currently being undertaken.

 Role Profile – Chair of the Board of Trustees We seek an experienced individual with strong governance skills and strategic ability who is enthusiastic about the invaluable role and impact that volunteers have across all of our communities. Someone who will be an ambassador for Volunteering Matters, who can help us maximise the potential of our programmes and replicate these across the UK and who can help us to grow the organisation. As Chair, your commitment to Volunteering Matters will include chairing Council meetings (usually four a year), an annual trustee strategy session and the Annual General Meeting. We encourage all of our trustees to visit local operations and to meet volunteers and staff to build their understanding of our work and increase their visibility within the organisation. Purpose The role of the Chair is to provide leadership and constructive challenge to the whole Council of Trustees, the Chief Executive and Executive Leadership team.

As a Health and Safety Volunteer you’ll make sure all local group members are aware of their health and safety responsibilities. You’ll help them understand and follow guidelines and procedures to coordinate safe activities.

In this role you’ll gain knowledge of Health and Safety legislation, as well as develop your organisation, admin and communication skills. Most importantly you’ll help your local group make sure all their activities are safe for every member of your local MS community.

Befriending Volunteer

You can make a difference…Age UK Wandsworth is a small, local, independent charity that has been working with older people in the area since 1963. We rely on your support to keep serving the older residents with in the Wamdsworth community. We have a dedicated team of experienced staff and a large network of dedicated local volunteers. Our aim is to enable everyone to age well in Wandsworth. We would love your help to be able to continue to support older Wandsworth residents.

Our Be-a-Friend service is one of our longest running services, matching people over 65, who live alone and have limited social contact, with a friendly local volunteer with similar hobbies and interests. The volunteer and their new friend set up a suitable time for them to meet each week for a chat and a cup of tea, which could be during the day, in the evening on the way home from work or even on the weekends . If you would prefer to volunteer from home, you can also be matched with an older person for telephone befriending. For many of our matched pairs, this is the beginning of a firm friendship. 

Befriending Plus

Befriending Plus is an extended version of the Be-a-Friend programme, for individulas needing help with life admin and small tasks as well as companionship. For Befriending Plus pairs, time spent together can include helping to use a phone or tablet, helping the client to organise their file, going out for a coffee or popping to the post office together. This support can help older people to stay independent at home for longer, as well as increasing their confidence to do these tasks when the volunteer is not there.

• To line manage marketing volunteers and regularly check in with them

• To set tasks for marketing volunteers and teams and to follow up progress on these tasks

• To contribute to the development of the organization through the marketing functions and by supporting the departmental head in drafting marketing policy 

Requirements:

• To be competent in IT, website design / editing and social media 

• To have experience in a senior marketing role or management 

• To have a passion for volunteering

• To be able to develop a team of less experienced marketing volunteers

Job description

At Staying Well we run a Telephone Befriending Scheme.

If you have up to an hour free once a week for 6 months then this could be the volunteer role for you!

This is what the Befriending Network say about befriending:

“Everyone needs other people, but not everyone has someone. 

Befriending offers supportive, reliable relationships through volunteer befrienders to people who would otherwise be socially isolated. Around the UK, there are befriending projects which organise effective support for children and young people, families, people with mental ill-health, people with learning disabilities and older people, amongst many others.

The results of befriending can be very significant. Befriending often provides people with a new direction in life, opens up a range of activities and leads to increased self-esteem and self confidence. Befriending can also reduce the burden on other services which people may use inappropriately as they seek social contact.”

PLEASE NOTE YOU WILL NEED TO BE BASED IN CALDERDALE IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS VOLUNTEER ROLE. 

Canterbury Food Bank, one of the largest charities of its kind in the UK, is recruiting new trustees.

The food bank was set up over a decade ago with an objective to end hunger and tackle poverty. 

We’ve made a start, but we’ve still got a long way to go.

Last year the charity provided enough food to make 132,000 meals for people in the district who are suffering financial hardship.

Trustees have overall control of the charity and are responsible for making sure it's doing what it was set up to do. They are volunteers and have board meetings once a month.

Previous trustee experience is not necessary. Lived experience of poverty, volunteering, community involvement and passion are as valued as work-based knowledge and skills
